How do you calculate the minimum KW power required from a split system unit to adequately heat and cool a room?

Hi Gareth there are a few variables that come into play including the amount of glass (West facing for example), ceiling heights etc but as an example look at the square meters of the room and times by a calculation of 140 watts/sqm. Again, this is purely an example but let's say the room is 40sqm, times by 140 watts/sqm is approx 5.6kW (5,600 Watts). In this instance I would probably select a 6kW capacity unit. Hope this helps!

Do you put it on that temp in “heat” mode? I put our Daikin ducted system on 22° in heat mode and woke up a few hours later in a sauna. My bedroom thermometer said it was 29°. The same thing happened the next night when I changed it to 20°….woke up later extremely hot. It seems to accumulate heat in the bedroom and gets hotter & hotter until turned off. The control panel is located in the living room (I have that zone switched off at night).

Hi Dominique, sounds like there could be two reasons for this. The first thing I would do is check where the system is sensing the temperature from (ie Return Air where the filter is, or the wall controller itself). If it's sensing from Return air, the conditioned air MUST get back to the Return air in order to sense the temperature properly. Example: If you close your bedroom doors at night and it is sensing the temperature in the hallway, the hallway will be cold, the system senses the cold in the hallway, and therefore continues to run the compressor in an attempt to bring the temperature in the hallway up to 22 deg (or whatever temp you have set to). The consequence of course is that you will over heat in your bedroom. If you open the bedroom door and let the conditioned airflow get back to the Return Air, this will help the system to understand the actual temperature in the bedroom. You mentioned the control panel is in the Living Room. Going back to my initial comment about knowing if it is sensing at controller or Return Air, if it is in fact sensing at the controller in the Living room, if the living room is cold, you will have the same issue as described above. To fix it, turn on a supply vent(s) in the living room. This will ensure that the conditioned air temperature is being received by the system. PS if you need to change the sensing point from Return Air to Controller (or vice versa), we have a tutorial for this on our Channel. If neither of these fixes the problem, it might just be a case of air balancing, ie reduce some of the airflow to the bedroom that is problematic. This is usually done by the zoning system (or manually if you don't have the ability to do this via your zoning system). Hope this helps.

@@Morphettair we are unable to leave the bedroom door open. Is this likely to be resolved if I configure it so the temperature is not read from the wall unit? Can the temperature still be sensed from the bedroom if the doors are closed?

@@dominiquebain6955 Hi again the only other option for you would be to have a remote sensor inside the bedroom. You should contact your local Daikin dealer and ask for pricing. This will hopefully alleviate your issue.

Thank you for your reply. Opening our bedroom door isn’t an option unfortunately, we have a cat we need to keep out at night. So is this likely to be resolved if I change the configurations so that temperature isn’t sensed from the wall unit? Can it still be sensed from the bedroom if my door is shut?

You may want to consider something like jumper duct? This where you simply have an additional supply vent in your bedroom, connected to a supply vent in your passage with a duct connecting the two. Because the return air is sucking from the hall side, this will drag some air up through the ven in your bedroom side. Another option is to have a relief vent in your bedroom door to allow the air to pass through. The only other option you may need to consider is possibly adding a remote sensor to your bedroom. Hope this helps 🙂
