I was just listening to this song when I saw the video notification XD. I love how they build that endless tension. It gives me a feeling of adrenaline, like having to face a fear that is inevitably approaching. The increasingly high-pitched sound sounds like a bomb falling. Finally explodes at the beginning of the next song. This is the most accessible and easy-listening song on the album

For how irregular this song sounds, it's crazy how consistent there live performances of this song is. Hungry Ghost is a track of theirs that is even more wonkier

Thanks for the breakdown. This is definitely on the deep end of avant/atmospheric black metal, in which I often take long dips. Though this song still gave me anxiety the first time I heard it, so I wouldn't worry about your initial reaction. As you were seeing with the lyrics though it's a good tone setter for the rest of the album. Hungry Ghost is currently my favorite piece of music. I've been pouring over it lately. Hope you check out some more in this vein, ie. Blut Aus Nord, Wolves in the Throne Room, Imperial Triumphant, and more Krallice (something from Years Past Matters?) Love it, thanks again!

This was exciting. I especially enjoyed that "ascending", dissonant riffing in the latter half (why of course, since it's very King Crimsonesque 😁) But, was it REALLY ascending though?.... Going back, might unveil an illusion... From a relisten, I'd say the consistently descending passages in the same part were actually longer. Also, joy and suffering are inseparable because there's no perceived happiness without a contrast.

Thantifaxath use a lot of "Shepard Scale" techniques to give the impression of endless rising and falling simultaneously

@@petergjata1498These guys capture that same claustrophobic sound that bands like early Mayhem's De Mysteris did, where the riffs feel like they're closing in on you and there's little if any moments of comfort as it drags you into the void, with or without your consent. They just added a bit more mindfuckery to it, and it works well. If that isn't trve kvlt enough for you, stick with the Norwegian scene. I for one, am glad to see black metal evolving into whatever form of chaos it will take next.

Interesting. I've always wanted to do something similar since I heard about it when reading about the Dunkirk soundtrack and the use of Shepherd Tones. It's not quite the same but it achieved a similar feeling

Ooh I like this. I love a very particular brand of bizarre/playful/evil/witchy metal. Look up a song 'You that Mingle May' by Thorns if you want an example of what I'm talking about. That's a good space to prog out in. A lot of tones of Dodheimsgard in this as well.

Kinda Deathspell Omega but with a more angular, syncopated, even doomy vibe. Definitely dug it, but I wonder how much longer bands can keep drawing from that DsO well before it starts running dry.

I don't get that much DsO from these guys. Thantifaxath is much jazzier than them, with all the weird meter warping and borderline atonality at times. DsO makes dissonant music unpleasant to the ears. Thantifaxath makes music that sounds like it never begins or ends.

Dunno, maybe I got my music muscle broken with BM or something, but to me this type of melody seems rather normal and organic. At least, to me it's not as abrasive as, say, Malvery - another experimental BM from ol' good days before DsO became cool. Re the album in general - I enjoy it way more than their previous releases. In short, those felt too pop-y, this one doesn't. At least now, some half a year past release.
