What a delightful conversation. I can't believe I haven't come across the Bible Project before. I will definitely have to check it out. Tim's focus on the God centered narrative vs handbook approach is an important one. When we lose sight of the theo drama we tend to project our ego into the scriptures. We also lose sight of the wonderful over arching themes and types that conveying deep truths about God. It's a powerful way to introduce non-believers to the truths of the Bible. St. Augustine summed it up nicely when he stated that "the New Testament is concealed in the Old, and the Old Testament is revealed in the New".

The Bible Project was my first entry into critical Biblical inquiry. I admire Dr. Mackie and his ministry! In 2016, I became Catholic in large part due to the further examination of the Bible that Dr. Mackie emphasizes in his ministry. I know that he’s not Catholic, but I’m still giving the credit where it’s due! The Bible Project ministry took me from a non-Christian, to a Christian, and ultimately led me to explore the mind of the Church such that I entered full communion with the Catholic Church.

@gingerandnutmeg_993 жыл бұрын
This is pure gold. I have so much respect for Dr. Tim Mackie; he is so knowledgeable on this topic. I became a Christian 4 years ago, knowing nothing about the bible. I joined an evangelical protestant campus group which was very helpful in leading me towards knowledge in the basic faith questions (ie. who is the Holy Spirit, how do I pray, what is the trinity). But now that I've matured more in my faith, I'm asking more complex questions, one of which is WHAT is the bible and HOW should I view it? I have struggled with this question for more than a year now, flipping back and forth between what seems to be two extremes: either the bible is absolutely perfect and cannot be questioned, or the bible is inherently flawed and should not be taken too seriously. I have never felt at home in either of these camps, and have been searching for a middle ground. Now, I finally feel like there IS an alternate way to view that bible that isn't either extremely conservative or liberal, which takes historical context and the nature of the bible into consideration. Dr. Mackie was right in saying that this in-between view of the bible is more work and not easily digestible, and in fact leads to even MORE questions. Yet, it is our job (I believe) to understand the bible in the way the Jesus would have. If we are trying to model our lives after this man, we should try to understand what his life was like and what his bible looked like when he was here. I am currently reading Dr. Peter Enns, who appears to view the bible similarly to Dr. Mackie. I still have much to learn, but this interview just excites me so much. I am so thankful that this interview was done because I am trying to learn more about this area of theology and it's so hard to find!! Thank you for this content :)

I would've been the same kind of fan boy interviewing him. One thing I thought tho during the interview is that as we progress our Biblical knowledge (and others are not) we need to show Grace to those functioning on less than ideal paradigms. Your fiance isn't doing anything wrong, it's a journey that God will take those children to become deeper readers later in life. God is always speaking with the current language that the people are speaking and then calling certain people to move others in a specific direction. It's hard to imagine that anyone at skatepark church had a PhD in Biblical studies, but boy did they do their job well in sharing Jesus. "We preach Christ crucified" . Blessings on this channel!

As a guy who has read through the Bible annually for maybe a decade and a half and has an undergraduate and graduate education in the Bible, the question of "what the Bibel is and isn't" is so fundamental intellectually/academically and more importantly in my relationship with God. It is so shocking to admit how seeing the Bible as a reference book rather than a relationship book has really allowed me to fail in my relationship with the Lord too often. I wonder if Dr. Mackie and his esteemed colleague John have thought about writing a book about what the Bible is and isn't. Thank you, Gospel Simplicity and brother Dr. Mackie. It was great to hear (around the one hour mark) that the Bible Project will be working on videos feauturing the Protestant Dueterocanon. It is fantastic to hear that a Protestant Audience will come around to hearing some of these works, likely for the first time. I'm interested to see how the approach will go: his channel may catch flak from Protestants who will consider his featuring of the Dueterocanon to be paying lip-service to "pagan literature"; on the other hand, they will catch flak from Orthodox and Roman Catholic viewers who may consider his treatment of the canon to be perhaps dismissive or disrespectful. It's a bold move, with likely little to gain. Nonetheless, it is the right thing to do. May God be with them as they begin to work on those videos.

I want to meet Tim one day

Tim this is for you and whoever God brings it to. As a little kid I had the Catholic Church shoved up my rear. I knew it was full of hate and hypocrisy from the door. My family was violent and hateful. I had a miserable childhood. At 14 I was an atheist. A girlfriend one-day talked to me about God and Jesus. I prayed with her to God and accepted Jesus as my Savior. More than that from the depths of my heart I asked God could I be a follower of Christ to become Him. When I opened my eyes my entire consciousness was filled with the infinite omnipresence of my Divine Creator! I went from a state of constant hate fear and worry to bliss love and joy. It was everlasting. The best part was that I didn't even know what the Bible was. So God taking me into His ❤️ heart had absolutely nothing to do with the words of the Bible. My spiritual relationship with God got twisted when some older " Jesus-freaks " said " gee Andy that's good you know the Lord but now you've got to get into " the word ". Big Mistake!! It turned into Bible studies and " Christian encounter groups " that psychologically detroyed people. " Get thee away from Me for I never knew you!!!" I was thrown out of my church for being too close to God and threatening the hypocrite pastor. Believe me all you so called " born-again " Christian's you don't want Jesus to come back because He would have nothing to do with you! The same way I went through my dark night of my soul until I suffered so intensely God brought me back to Christly Sainthood. Go into your closet when you pray to your Father and don't let know left hand know what your right hand is doing. Oh yeah, and one more thing... Leave your Bible out of it!

Even though I just came back to Him (God) last year after a long time. Then why do some christians believe that God is grey and some believe that His nature never changes? I have come to the belief that He Is and He always will be...

The only thing that the Bible project is missing is the belief in the real presence and we would have the best catechetical channel. They teach Ransom theory instead of penal substitution in their video about atonement (Which freaks out all baptists viewers). We hope to have St. Tim Mackie is God allows!

Ransom theory? I never noticed that in their videos. I would’ve described them more as Christus Victor. Do you have something you could point to showing them reaching ransom theory?

@@GospelSimplicity I´m not an expert but here is is the quote from the Bible Project video: ¨Isaiah looked forward to a day when a new king from the line of David would come and deal with evil but in a surprising way the King would become a servant and not just serve but also suffer and die for the evil committed by his own people and his life would be offered as a sacrifice this is the promise of Jesus believed he was fulfilling he's the king of Israel suffering and dying on the cross. In fact, Jesus himself used Isaiah's words when he said that he came to serve and give his life as a ransom for many. And that word ransom refers to the sacrifice of atonement and so all over the New Testament we hear about how Jesus' death was an atoning sacrifice for us. It covered the debt that humans owe God for contributing to all of the evil and death in His world¨ Classical Ransom Theory as described by St Augustine, the ransom is payed to Satan but the Church has never dogmatized this. The catechism of the Catholic Church ignores who this ransom was paid to. ccc601 Bible project says ¨It covered the debt that humans owe God¨ While Christus Victor by Aulen in the other hand interprets ransom theory as a "victory over the powers which hold mankind in bondage: sin, death, and the devil." This may be implied in the video somehow that I don´t see, but it is never stated. And it´s an extension of the same patristic theory anyways. The same video also makes allusion to the supplementary ¨Satisfaction Theory¨ of Anselm of Canterbury, also taught by the Catholic Church, at the first part of the video. When the video says about sin: ¨We have all contributed and we keep doing it. So this kind of puts us in a bind if God's going to rid the world of evil, he'll have to get rid of us.¨ This is straight up Aquinas ¨punishment is a morally good response to sin: it is a kind of medicine for sin, and aims at the restoration of friendship between the wrongdoer and the one wronged¨ ST IIIa.85.3 I may have missed something but as far as I can see that video about atonement, even being simplified, is very aligned with catholic teaching. God bless!

In your description of how to read the Bible and take one scripture. Where did the Holy Spirit who is also called our discerner, play a part?
