Is it morally okay for Christians to fight in wars? That is a question that is undoubtedly on people's minds at the minute, and I think this video will be helpful in explaining the two main Christian positions on war. I've tried to do this with balance and present each side fairly, along with the strengths and flaws in each argument - but ultimately it's up to you to decide which side you think is stronger.
With that being said, we as Christians should be people who love, pray for and act for peace. And whichever side of this debate we fall on, we are to pursue peace in a way that we believe to be consistent with Scripture.

You should refer to the Articles of Religion, Art 37: “It is lawful for Christian men, at the commandment of the Magistrate, to wear weapons, and serve in the wars.” The defense of the polity and its allies requires arms. For this reason, those who legitimately hold authority also have the right to command Christians to arms to repel aggressors against the polity entrusted to their care, and, more generally, in pursuit of just causes. As St Augustine says, “We do not seek peace in order to be at war, but we go to war that we may have peace. Be peaceful, therefore, in warring, so that you may vanquish those whom you war against, and bring them to the prosperity of peace." Those who wage war justly aim at peace, and so they are not opposed to peace, except to the evil peace, which Our Lord "came not to send upon earth" (St Matthew 10:34) Likewise the solider in fighting the just war not only must behave honourably but as St Augustine says, “The passion for inflicting harm, the cruel thirst for vengeance, an unpacific and relentless spirit, the fever of revolt, the lust of power, and such like things, all these are rightly condemned in war."

Come on Anglicans 🙌🏻 I think that’s an important caveat that even if we are to engage in violence, it must be because we’re aiming for peace. And that even when fighting a just cause, we need to guard our hearts against delighting in violence or committing unjust acts.

Wrong question. You should ask yourself whether Christians can get killed. If no, if you think you're immortal then you don't need to fight. Just be happy and content in Jesus. But if there's any chance somebody could take your freedom, your happiness or your life by force, then you should learn to protect yourself and actually have the guts to do it when the moment comes.

Well the Christian hope is that we will overcome death, but we’re also called to pursue justice and mercy (Micah 6:8), and sometimes that might require fighting for it. So I don’t think those two things are mutually exclusive

Oof, great question. I’m actually in the Church of Ireland, so still Anglican, but the culture in the denomination is a little different here to what I understand it to be in England. My diocese in particular would be quite strongly evangelical, even by Church of Ireland standards, so I don’t really experience the dissonance that other evangelical anglicans do when they’re part of a wider church body that’s quite liberal.

What would you say to the idea that Jesus doesn’t tell the centurion in Luke to quit his job and instead tells him he’s one of great faith?
@AllThingsTheology
@AllThingsTheology 2 жыл бұрын
Great question. I decided that it was similar enough to the Luke 3 account of John to not include it; but it is also slightly different. With John, the soldiers were asking “how can we be more godly?”, whereas with this centurion he was asking Jesus for a miracle and showing great faith. I would have less expectation of Jesus rebuking soldiery here than I have of John doing so in Luke 3, simply because of the nature and purpose of the encounter. Does that make sense?

When Jesus tells his disciples to buy swords, he also gives a reason. That reason is that he wanted to fulfill the prophecy in Isaiah 53 by being "numbered with the transgressors". The purpose of the swords was not in any way to be used for violence,, and when violence was attempted it was directly condemned by Jesus.
@AllThingsTheology
@AllThingsTheology 2 жыл бұрын
I don't know if Jesus is necessarily quoting Isaiah 53 as a direct link to the command to buy swords, though I haven't studied it in super-depth to be able to say decisively. I also don't see mention of swords in Isaiah 53 so it seems like a random link
@samthelima
@samthelima 2 жыл бұрын
@@AllThingsTheology I think the direction connection between verses 36 and verse 37 is pretty clear, and most translations highlight this with the word "For". The way that I understand it, Jesus is basically saying that his disciples should get some swords (verse 36) *because* he needs to be surrounded by "transgressors" (directly quoting Isaiah). Though Isaiah doesn't mention swords, I think that Jesus considers sword-bearers to be synonymous with transgressors, in that context.

@@samthelima interesting, I did look at NIV and ESV to see if there was a "for" in there but they didn't seem to have it. I do know, though, that other translations render Jesus' statement of "enough" to be "enough of that!" So perhaps the translations that render it "enough of that!" also have the "for", and the ones that render it differently don't have the "for". I don't know much about Greek but I know it can be a little slippery at times.

7:59 When Jesus was tempted by Satan, notice what Satan said: Luke 4:5 So he brought him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the inhabited earth in an instant of time. 6 Then the Devil said to him: “I will give you all this authority and their glory, because it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. 7 If you, therefore, do an act of worship before me, it will all be yours.” 8 In reply Jesus said to him: “It is written, ‘It is Jehovah your God you must worship, and it is to him alone you must render sacred service.’” Jesus did not deny that Satan had this authority. In fact Jesus confirmed this point when he said this: John 14:30 I will not speak with you much more, for the ruler of the world is coming, and he has no hold on me. Jesus also said his disciples would be no part of the world. So the question becomes, is serving in the military being part of this world? Will you kill others, because someone else, perhaps under Satan's influence, told you to? While God allows human governments for a time, we are to be no part of the world.

1: Lord Jesus Whipped the Moneychangers out of the Temple, Lord Jesus DID NOT TURN HIS OTHER CHEEK to the Moneychangers. 2: Lord Jesus INSULTED the Pharisees many times, Jesus called them SNAKES, Brood of Vipers, Children of Satan etc... Jesus DID NOT TURN HIS OTHER CHEEK to the Pharisees. 3: Lord Jesus CURSED 3 CITIES which DID NOT BELIEVE THAT JESUS IS THE MESSIAH, despite these cities witnessing many miracles of Lord Jesus. Note Jesus DID NOT FORGIVE THESE CITIES and also Jesus DID NOT PRAY for These Cities instead Jesus cursed them, that led to these cities getting RUINED. these ACTIONS of Lord Jesus prove that Jesus was OK with violence against WICKED EVIL PEOPLE. and ACTION speaks louder than words. But What about loving your enemies and turning the other Cheek???? ANSWER: Loving your enemies and Turning the other Cheek Were TEMPORARY COMMANDMENTS given by Lord Jesus in order to PREVENT Rebellion of his Followers against the Pharisees and their THEN allies Mighty Roman Empire. NOW Jesus knew his followers will all GET KILLED, if they Rebelled Against the Pharisees and their THEN ROMAN allies, because Follower of Jesus were all POOR AND DOWNTRODDEN PEOPLE who HAD NO MILITARY Training or Military Experience. And Jesus did not wanted ALL HIS FOLLOWERS to Die at that time instead Lord Jesus had a much Grander PLAN, Lord Jesus wanted his followers to Spread HIS Gospel All Over the World after His Death and Resurrection. And that is what Happened, The Gospel was spread all over the World, And Billions of People got saved when they put their Faith In Lord Jesus after Listening to his Gospel.

4:35 There is a reason Christians are not to judge others. God and His Son will judge who is worthy of death. Not us. Also, if you go against Jesus' command to love your neighbor, why would you think you would not be judged for that action? In the Bible, hell is mankind's common grave. During the resurrection, hell is emptied, then hell is thrown into the lake of fire, meaning gone forever. (Revelation 20:13, 14)
