Special thanks to Sherry and Jiujiu for hosting and reporting. For those of you wondering why Kei (half-Japanese guy) and I (Korean guy) are no longer conducting street interviews ourselves, we are still very much involved behind the scenes to ensure that you continue getting the most quality content. In the end, Asian Boss was never about the two of us becoming famous KZbinrs (we don't kid ourselves thinking we ever were). It’s always been about bringing people's voices together and creating a movement where anyone can become an "Asian Boss.” One thing is for sure - we will need a lot of Asian Bosses from all over Asia and the rest of the world to form a tight community that will bring about necessary change to the media industry. We will make a video about our vision as a media startup to explain this in greater detail in the coming weeks. In the meantime, you will see a lot more hosts & interviewers from different countries, so please be supportive of them and continue to believe in our vision. We are all in this together. Thanks everybody! - Steve

emmm Just to be clear, the rude behaviors from the older generation such as pushing people, shouting across the street, spitting etc. are NOT ACCEPTABLE NORMAL behaviors in China as well. Some of the younger generations are trying to educate their parents/grandparents to change some of the bad behaviors, some of the older people do listen, but some of them do not. Some of the older persons are stubborn, they don't listen, they think the youngsters are just little brats, like how dare you little kids lecture an experienced seniors. If you are trying to stop a elderly stranger for some kind of bad behavior, you may get ignored. If the elderly has a bad temper, you may get blamed for you are not respecting the elderly(although everyone knows its not true). However, these behaviors do not justify them as a bad person. I saw an elderly ho relying on recycle bottle and paper for a living, he spits when he wants to, but he also donates money to charity. Some of older generations do not have the chance to get education when there were young, it is hard enough for them to just live, so they don't have the time to think about being the person with best temperament. Some people does not live in an exquisite life, they just live it the rough way, they probably were not aware that some of the behaviors are not polite. This is not something you can changed in one day, some of them have been like this for most of their life, it takes a long time to change a long-time habit. But things are only gonna get better and better, just a matter of time. I know some people like to believe what they want to believe, even they know the truth deep down in their minds. It a waste of time to educate or argue with them.

I've been living in China for almost 10 years and the change is happening very fast, at least in my perspective, when I read your comment. Though doesn't seem to happen so fast in the day to day, even more in 3rd tier cities like the one where I live. It is hard for the younger Chinese to have the elders listen however since many of them get to educate their grandchildren I think it is very important that they do so. For example once I saw a grandpa giving a new toy to his grandson and the kid unwrapped it and threw the wrap in the floor. I knew it was not my problem but I went to the child and said 小朋友,把这个让在垃圾箱里 (little friend throw this in the trashbin) and he did! Fortunately and unlike what I thought the consequences would be, his grandpa thanked me and said "oh you foreigners are so civilized". We smiled and went on with our lives. A sensitive approach can go very far. Cheers.

As a chinese person, I suggest that the reason there is a "stereotype" is because the people who usually sign up for those Chinese tour groups are people who have recently come into money due to the economic upturn of China; people who previously could not afford to travel abroad can do so now and many of them are "uncultured" and "bad-mannered" people who are probably used to the hubbub of urban Chinese life. I think these people are not the norm, but they set a stereotype amongst Westerners regardless, since they're so noticeable. You can find these "tourist" types even within China, at airports and at high-speed railways, yelling and being rude. The average Chinese traveler finds them a nuisance, too. ...and as others have pointed out, it's usually old or middle-aged people who are making a racket.

I don't think all the rude people are middle age. I once went on silver cruise in Bali. Me and my husband get on early to get the best seat because I have motion sickness so, I want the back seat. so a middle age woman came to us and ask if they could sit with us, I said ok, because other seats were empty. Then she brought her daugther and granddaugther. So, I said cool. We arrived in the middle of the ocean and I went to snorkling, when we got back, and lunch was served, the lady husband and son in law came and sit at our table, so we have to move to the most back where the seats were less comfortable. They also take all the food like the food will never be enough for them. I recall seeing them not able to finished it. At the island, others family are super loud that we have to climb up to avoid them. and because of that, we were unable to listen to the guide calling us to see a native hand craft village. It was the worst day of my visit in Bali. Now, we know not to do these group thingy. Better go to unheard places.

I completely agree with you! Where I work in town (Sonoma, California) we get a large amount of Chinese tourists, especially during the summer. When I went to Hong Kong Disneyland, a couple (mother and father) helped their chubby son climb MY BODY so that he could stand on a trash can to watch the fireworks. I was shocked >.< When I went to Thailand, a Chinese woman just asked the Starbucks barista for hot water in Chinese, and the barista tried to answer in Chinese "You must buy something" but the Chinese woman couldn't understand and just continued to ask questions. She didn't even try to understand or wait for a response. I thought it was so strange...if you have a question, why don't you wait for the answer? You know you are in another country...try to speak the language or at least slow down. Again in Thailand, my friends and I were in line for the bathroom when a Chinese tour bus pulled up. They swarmed the bathroom and pushed us out of the way. We speak Chinese, so we told them we were here first, and that there is a line. They just said they were already in line and turned away from us. So incredibly rude. We ended up using the men's restroom and heard them laughing. Overall, I think Chinese tour groups are the worst. They push, shove, yell and are generally unsanitary (spitting, standing on toilet seats, throwing trash everywhere and smoking). However, I have also encountered a young couple traveling alone in Taipei and they were very polite and well-mannered. I think/hope that the Chinese travel culture is improving in the new generation. Of course, they need to see the world in order to understand it so we have to be patient. Now Americans aren't the only tourists with a bad reputation, haha.

First of all, I feel like these interviewees live in Shanghai too long (literally the nicest way I could put into) that they forget a LARGE part of China isn't as developed as Shanghai or other mega cities. Also a LARGE part of our folks are just NOT as educated as them. Personally I totally get where this stereotype coming from. Just look at how we behave in our own country. For example toilet environment especially in those not so fancy district. Just admit it, we are not the most polite and educated people on earth as a whole, and we should do better. Admit it, apologize, talk about it, work on it, it's not so hard and not at all a shameful thing to do. Respect / reputation is something you earned not something you could get by telling people that they should. Denial only make things worse.

I told her to wait her turn and she responds screaming “i know! I know!” I turned away not saying another word and she starts yelling at me in chinese and lightly hit my shoulder. I told her not to touch me and asked the girl at the door to separate us. Given her grown daughter knowing good english she obviously has been living here for quite some time. There are a lot reasons why they're loud. They might train their vocal core to speak loudly for variety of reasons, such as talking to older patients with hearing problem, people with hearing problems, they're born that way, they got excited or that's their natural voice. I have good hearing, but if someone speak loudly in their natural voice, my ears would hurt. I could hear a gentleman talking to his friend as they were walking across my 3 storage building. Like this on guy pushed me while I was admiring an aquarium exhibit just to take a selfie. Also the hotel I stayed at had so much Mainlanders tourists problems that the manger had to be involved constantly. It’s like they are on vacation and they assume they could do whatever they want. While Mainlander are in China they had to behave a little more but still minor rudeness especially on the metro. I do think HKers are more polite. When I was in the metro in China I was frustrated because of all the line cutting and shoving. When in HK that didn’t happen and also young man offered their seat to my mom who was an elderly. In China we didn’t see that kind of respect towards elderly. It was more young people sitting down and old people standing up. I felt like during rush hours it’s dangerous for elderly to be on the metro in China because of how much pushing and shoving happens.

It's not merely the noise factor that people hate about mainland Chinese tourists. It's the sense of self-entitlement. The majority of them (i utterly refuse to apologise for saying this) have absolutely no respect whatsoever for anything or anyone, especially in SEA where they apparently consider themselves above everyone else, especially non-Chinese Asians as well as Hakka and non-mainland Chinese. Consequently, they are loathed and hated by everyone in SEA, but (and this is worth emphasising) especially by non-mainland Chinese. Everywhere I travel in SEA (I currently live in Malaysia), i see examples of why they are hated. For example, in the marine wildlife reserves (Malaysia has some of the best in the world), they utterly refuse to show even the smallest level of respect for the parks, the staff or the rules. They casually pick coral off the sea bed and wantonly litter, and when they are confronted about it they are unfathomably arrogant. All the dive-masters on my last trip confirmed their hatred of the mainland chinese, and i witnessed their behaviour for myself. Their attitude was 'we already paid, we can do whatever we want!'. Hotels will often default reply to enquiries to groups of mainland Chinese with 'sorry, we're fully booked', which speaks volumes as to how problematic they are; it's just not worth having them around. This is not the way local Chinese in SEA behave. This is a very specific issue relating to Chinese from mainland China. The difference between Chinese from Hong Kong or Taiwan or Malaysia is visible. You can spot mainland Chinese practically anywhere, literally on account of the stereotype.

It might sound like they are yelling at each other but they aren't. Loved my time working there. They were awesome people and I especially enjoyed the straight from China menu. @chenyuniq5 жыл бұрын
From my personal experience it all boils down to historical context and education. Growing up my parents have always taught me the importance of proper manners and respect, along with other traditional Chinese values. My parents were in term taught by my grandparents. My family had that privilege because although we are not wealthy, we are very educated. My grandparents were in fact the first in their villages and counties to go to college, which makes me a third generation college grad. And that’s rarest of the rare in China. Due to historical reasons most Chinese people of our generation are first generation college students. Their parents and grandparents never had the opportunity to go to college. And that had made all the difference. Looking at People’s Republic of China now its easy to forget that less than 50 years ago over 90% of population living a life scraping off trees and grass to survive poverty. During cultural revolution in the 1960s the entire education system collapsed, almost nobody went to school, and there was no university education for 10 years. China has gone through countless wars and famine in the last 200 years which practically completely destroyed the country. What people don’t realize is that what is considered “normal” now has only been the case for 30 years. And now from dirt poor country to a superpower, a lot is changing. With enormous flow of wealth and a lack a social changes as dramatic as the economic ones, it is easy to see why China is the way it is right now. buddy RJ the older generation is used to all those you listed, and less like that for the younger people. it’s not just a matter of education, but also about the environment the older people grew up in ; the country was so chaotic in wars and so deprived of resources, they were used to be ruleless to survive. things will get better when the older generation gets replaced by the younger ones. To be honest , growing up in that environment, I do feel uncomfortable, but I can’t do much. For example, if I tell an old guy to stop smoking in a restaurant, the person might think I’m being rude and trying to intervene his life, and he’d be very aggressive to me. In some places, I might even get myself into a fight or big trouble if I stand out and tell older people to not do something. Not denying what you said, i completely feel you too...

I think the problem stems from the fact the China economically rose up quickly but the societal norms lagged behind. The people who contribute to the stereotypes are the ones who are suddenly wealthy (especially the ones from the rural areas) and doesn't realize the need to respect one's country or culture their traveling too because the arrogantly believe that money can solve everything. Things like trashing an airport, peeing in fountains, or excreting on the streets are prime examples that pushes prejudice against Chinese people across the world.

I was once stopped behind a line of them, when I was hit from behind by a cart. When the cart hit me again, I turned back to see a Chinese woman who kept ramming her cart into me thinking that would somehow make the crowd in front of her move out of the way. Another time, I was on the bus in Seoul when I Chinese man started eating peanuts and throwing the shells on the floor of the bus. They are just completely self-absorbed people.

Another way is to speak in english to the japanese, they can differentiate your accent with the China mainlander english speaking accent Funny enough that some of the Singapore hotels and restaurants establishment have unofficial policy to reject booking from chinese tourists from China or reject from making reservation. Some of them have certain crowd control that only applied to the chinese tourists are able to book the certain amount of hotel rooms regardless of having cash or not, if we don't control the quota then they can be too noisy and others foreign tourists will have an unpleasant arrival experience. Pretty sure many countries establishment practice this hidden unofficial policy as well. The government on the other hand tend to bend over for them policy under "visa-free visitor" because they are current the largest tourism and largest spending and no matter what they do it doesn't affect the government but the citizens, the locals hated them alot especially for the chinese ethnic that are born in other part of the asian countries

Nooo... this isn't a prejudice because of their "yellow skin" as the guy said. There have been Japanese tourists here for decades, if it was based on some anti-Asian stereotype then it's weird I've never ever heard anyone complain about the Japanese. I lived in a "tourist destination town" for years and met a lot of people who worked in the tourist industry, and when you work with people from all over the world on a daily basis I think it's a matter of experience and not prejudice. They all complained about Chinese tourists :P It used to be Americans that had a bad reputation, now it's becoming Chinese and Russians. This video sorta suggest what is the problem as well, when you're in another country you are kinda expected to be aware that it's another culture and things works differently, yet these people don't see it as a problem because the behaviour is normal in China. Chinese education and Chinese media has been very self-centred and so they don't really have knowledge about the world. I blame their government and not them. But it looks like the government is trying to fix this problem.

Probably its because there are orders of magnitudes more Chinese tourists than Japanese tourists. You can't complain about something that doesn't exist. For example, in the city of Montreal 3.0% of the population is Chinese, while it is only 0.1% Japanese (about 2000 in a city with a population of 3 Million), which is insignificant.
@Nabium7 жыл бұрын
First of all, where I live there's more Japanese tourists than Chinese. I meet Japanese tourists all the time. I give them a little doso when they pass me, if I'm obstructing the way, or a ohayo in the morning, or a little nihonjin desu ka if I'm not sure if they're Japanese or not. Always gotten some Japanese back so my guess is they're Japanese. For some reason, my town has more Japanese tourists than Chinese, don't know why, perhaps it's because there aren't any Fashion or Luxery stores here. Secondly, the ones(three girls I talked with who all agreed, plus a male friend of mine when I mentioned this to him) reporting this to me all worked in the tourist industry - as I pointed out - so surely they've dealt with people from all over the world. Chinese tourists must make up a minority in every conceivable way, the most common ones are French, Germans, Brits, Russians and Janks. Also Swedes and other Norwegians, but they pass of as locals so they won't really be noticed as tourists. So no, it's not because there's more Chinese than Japanese. Because there aren't. And we were talking about tourists here, not people living here, so the whole Montreal reference was completely irrelevant

You're not at home in your own mainland, different countries have different cultures and they should make an effort to LEARN about it and not make themselves look like a fool, which in turn perpetuates this negative stereotype of "typical china tourists". ahahah in this sense, to fit in with the mainland chinese culture will you go to china and poop on the street and pee in the road? will you say yes to spitting in starbucks and eating the weird street food they sell? will you learn to only shout in restaurants and out on the streets? will you learn to walk faster in china and drive crazier to fit in to their culture whilst you're there? will you learn to adapt to poop in dirty public toilets in china and not moan about it? I mean I'm not defending them, but perhaps they're not bad people just ignorant? perhaps we can learn to teach them what is normal in european countries? Most of those so called rude mainlanders, have never been out of China, and when they're on holiday nobody as told them strictly what they're suppose to do or shouldn't do. They need time to change how they're brought up and a two weeks coach trip is just not enough to teach them - and lets face it tourist guides just want to make money, so they won't spend the time to educate people. i just got back from Beijing this past Monday. Subways are clean and quiet. Everyone is staring at their phones. No one is pushing and shoving to get in and out of trains anymore. This is vastly different from my last visit in 2011. People stand to the right on escalators and allow for people in a rush to pass on their left. They employ attendees (乘车管理) on all their buses whose job it is to maintain order on buses, and help those in need. I see young people regularly giving up their seats to the elderly. People also help the elderly who fall down when the bus has to brake suddenly. They're doing a really great job at becoming "civilized". There are public service announcements everywhere reminding people to be polite, courteous, and moral. It was a vast improvement from a decade ago. What I think I am seeing is a concerted effort by by Chinese society to change the behavior of 1.4 billion people in a concerted manner. The older people find it harder to change their habits, while the younger people are more malleable. That's why you will notice that older people will still act "loudly" while the younger people are adopting international norms for politeness.

Alone, people tend to be more respectful of the people and culture around them, but in groups - its a "strength in numbers" idea: peoples awareness is group focused, disregarding how anyone outside may view their actions. Also, people tend to be more fiercely patriotic when away from their home country than when they are actually living there.

From my experience, usually the reason why some foreigners dislike Chinese tourists is not necessarily due to their louder behavior, but due to their more... disrespectful and unhygienic behavior? I've travelled to China several times, and I can definitely see that actions like throwing your trash onto the road, or spitting in the streets are considered really very normal and no one bats an eye. However, this is considered very rude and disrespectful, particularly in Europe and America. I've encountered Chinese tourists in an underground cave once as a child, running their hands all over the stalagmites and stalactites even when the tour guide told everyone very specifically that doing so would cause the ancient formations to stop growing and they could be fined a large amount of money. Then, I was absolutely horrified, and it built up a very negative image of Chinese people for myself. Now, as someone who is Chinese by blood and residing in Taiwan, I do respect the Chinese people and their culture, but things like what happened then had given me a very bad image of them before I ever really visited China. I just really hope they can learn that in these countries, people value cleanliness and respect to the environment, and at least follow this culture when travelling.

That young dude in black has clearly never traveled outside of China or he's in complete denial. Chinese tourists by large margin are the worst behaving, that's not some racist stereotype, just a fact. I'm not saying all Chinese tourists, from personal experience its the older generation (40+) that are the real offenders. I can't think of a situation where I've seen young Chinese people behaving badly, I've met so many in my travels and they are always nice. I think one of the problem is how they travel in huge groups, which in a sense numbs them of their surroundings, they are less susceptible to take in their environment and act inappropriately. Many young Chinese travel in small groups, often as a couple and their behavior is night and day compared to the groups. They are more respectful and more likely to immerse themselves to the culture they are visiting unlike the groups which turn up at a country and never interact with the locals, talk loudly amongst themselves and just do loads of shopping, having learnt next to nothing in their travels.
@Kreeara7776 жыл бұрын
FoodforThought nope you are a fat and balding loser
Your first question was “have you traveled abroad?” and your second question revealed an assumption “how did the group behave?” This is a big part of the problem. Chinese travel in huge groups. Most westerners never travel in big groups. Chinese as a result don’t interact with the locals. This is understandable because there is less need and less comfort but it really affects behavior I think.

Of course Singaporeans will feel indifferent towards the Chinese because firstly, we are Chinese race ourselves, secondly, there are so many Chinese nationals in Singapore, there isnt much of a reason to treat them as special guests, and thirdly, many Singaporeans feel that the bad Chinese behaviour is bringing a bad name to the Chinese culture, thus that sense of annoyance towards them, similar to how many HKers and Taiwanese feel towards the Chinese. I never had the mindset that Chinese tourists had bad behaviour, but I was shocked to witness how rude they can be. They always spoke so loudly, even from a distance. No, they practically screamed their conversations amongst themselves as if they wanted others to hear. It was so annoying. One time, the food at the buffet had just arrived. Instead of lining up, they swarmed the food and took as many food for themselves. For example, one dish had tons of fruits in it, and it was also meant for the other hotel guests. But it literally took only 2 chinese tourists to finish the whole dish as they practically kept it for themselves. I couldn’t even have one bite. Unbelievable.

There's so many Chinese tourists, even it's just some of them are bad-mannered, it'll seem a lot. People won't take notice of good-mannered Chinese tourists but just the bad ones. 3. I remember when I first saw Mukbangs and Koreans would just slurp their food and eat with their mouth open and I could not for the life of me understand why anyone would want to watch that. I work in a tourism industry & my country is a very popular tourist destination located in Asia. All I can say that the bad Chinese stereotypes are very very true. But are all Chinese tourists are like this? Of course not, but they are very hard to find. In my experiences, the ones that didn't fit the stereotypes tend to be Hong Kong or Taiwanese than the mainland Chinese themselves. But my country, we had Chinese immigrants settling down for so many centuries, we are well aware of the Chinese stereotypes & we have never liked it. The fact that there are more & more Chinese people coming in more than ever made a lot of the locals unhappy, even some of my colleagues grew less fond of the Chinese due to their work experiences. I think it is because people here, despite being Asian, our culture is the different than that of the Chinese. And a lot of people here prefer Europeans, Americans or any other Asian tourists than Chinese tourists because those other tourists are wealthier & well-behaved. I personally have a hard time communicating with a lot of Chinese tourists due to language barriers, but I use a lot of gestures & drawings to communicate, sometimes I have to raise my voice which is considered rude in my culture & sometimes I have to be very firm & assertive to get the message across, I feel like I have to be rude to them all the time when I deal with Chinese tourists & that makes me feel unhappy because I feel like I am making them feel like I am not happy to help them or something. But I still help them regardless because I don't really hold that prejudice against the Chinese.
