Rosianna, I’m truly so happy for you. It brings me genuine joy just to type this CONGRATS on starting your master’s program so soon. Your enthusiasm for all you’ll be learning about migration and development is practically effervescent. I also just started a master’s program in library science, with the hopes of being a full-fledged youth services librarian in a public library someday, and I’m already loving it so much that I even enjoy doing the homework. A friend who is French told me the word “épanoui” came to mind when I was talking about my classes; I looked it up later and saw it roughly translates to “blooming” or “beaming.” 🥺🌺 I see exactly that in this video of yours! All the best for what’s ahead and DFTBA!

Ahh thank you Anjali! Congratulations on starting your masters and I feel SO invested in finding out where life takes you. I love that new word: épanoui :') I'm really excited for homework tbh so I get you. Yay! Thank you and congratulations again!

I just finished university and don’t yet have a job so when you asked what I do I was tempted to say “nothing” but instead here are some of the things I’ve been up to cause they are still important. I have been visiting my dad in hospital as much as possible. He has been in hospital for 5 months of this year and is very bored. I’m getting the house ready for his returning which means making the house accessible to his new reduced amount of vision and mobility. I have been entertaining a family friend who has been staying with us for a month and trying to be a good host. I have been reading up on socialist and environmental issues which I care so much about. I have helped my sister move into university. I have been applying for jobs, researching driving lessons and fighting my landlord over my deposit. I have been taking my cat to the vet a lot as she is very unwell. I have been rewatching the good place. It’s been a bloody busy year and I’m very happy with the things I’m up to given the circumstances.

Alice, as a stranger on the internet, I just want to say I’m so fucking proud of you. I’ve also spent much of the year caregiving for a parent while unemployed. Weird feelings - about all of it - surfaced sometimes, but I know now that I’ve been working, and working hard, despite what it might look like on paper. Even when we rest, we’re working on ourselves. Given all that’s on your plate I hope that you’re able to get some of that rest, and that you continue to show yourself grace ❤️
@rosianna3 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you're extremely busy indeed and, as you say, these things are still important and having your dad in hospital must be an ongoing worry, especially with the new adjustments to his reduced vision and mobility. Do you have any recommendations for books you've loved re socialist and environmental issues? I'm sorry you've had to fight your landlord over your deposit and that your cat has been unwell on top of all that. Even one of those stressors would be more than enough but you've had a real handful of them. I hope things ease off, even if just a little soon, and I'm glad you've been rewatching The Good Place and reading about things you care about. You're doing really well and we're all behind you :) not literally...that's terrifying.

thank you for telling us! i've been here for quite some time and know you work with john and at john and hank's podcast - and i assumed a few more things at complexly - but i enjoyed knowing some more about the things you're doing and supporting. this has been done so much and i think you might have done this a few years ago, but your work seems so varied and interesting I'd be so curious about seeing another "day in my life" kind of thing (a week even, but I guess that's too much). like the logistics of your day seem interesting so to me, I love organizing things for people and I sometimes do a bit of that work and you mix that with books and vlogbrother's projects and podcasts and what seems like interesting projects and people. also how do you keep all of this organized/planned? anyways, i hope your master's go well! your outfit is also super cute: the colours, headband, dress, hair combo looks great (that's my most technical fashion jargon right there).

This made me think of YEARS ago when we were all just-graduated babies and you and Sanne made the what are we doingggg videos. From a random stranger how was been on the other side of this screen for a while - proud of you! I am at a weird moment where I know I need to leave my job and figure out something that works better for me, but I'm not sure how to do that. I am trying to sit in that and treat it like part of the 'journey' (ew, but hopefully you know what I mean) rather than beat myself up for being a failure. I manage some of the time, haha!

Lovely to see an update and you looking so happy. I was essentially a housewife (or house goblin as we termed it, as I am nobody’s wife) throughout the lockdown parts of the pandemic and I really loved it, doing all the household stuff while my flatmate did her NHS job, taking myself off on my bike or my legs to explore things, and generally relaxing. But now I’m properly back at work as a school librarian and I love that too. I’d love to work part time and house goblin part time so maybe I should work on that. Cycle commuting makes going to work much better too

As for me, I am in the second year of my graduate program, writing my thesis and finishing up my final year. I also have work-study as a research assistant for one of my professors, which I find really cool to learn about how her research looks like behind the scenes. And huge congratulations on starting your masters course - that sounds like an amazing program. I've missed reading your book recs on Instagram, but I can imagine how freeing it must be to not keep up with the 'gram anymore. I do a very bad job at explaining the various aspects of my work to my friends, but the short answer is that I'm currently producing a weekly radio program and weekly podcast, as well as sticking my hands in many live video and audio production projects. I work at a small college so the beginning of the academic year is always a bit bananas. It makes it difficult to achieve a good work/life balance! Wishing you a great start to your own academic year!!

A lovely catch up! Seeing you shine brings me so much joy! Sending positive vibes for the start of your Masters program 🙌 I moved back to AZ while our offices are working remotely. Found a spot that's close to family and it has eased my mind so much. Outside of work, I've been reading and daydreaming about opening a bookstore. The side of town I live on is getting developed into more of a family and young adult community... And it doesn't have a bookstore! I've been working in entertainment / media / digital where the audiences are national or global. I have this feeling that it would be so much more satisfying to me to work with a small, local community. Going to let the idea percolate while I work through a recently acquired how to open a bookstore guidebook and read memoirs from booksellers and shop owners.

Like the Deathly Hallows story, this comment comes to you in two parts. 1) This was amazing. How varied and thoughtful your work is! Remembering that the world is big and refugee situations don't just occur for the time they rattle the news cycle can be hard on mental health. There's just so much... But knowing there's something we can do about it, even if "small" matters. 2) In my spare time, I operate the unofficial Tuataria Minecraft server. In fact, I'm trying to diagnose why it won't boot right now!
@rosianna3 жыл бұрын
Cheers Mark! Good luck booting that server -- hopefully it's back online now. I feel like the past two years has been a constant re/encountering of big and small. Feeling like problems are too big and I am too small. But then seeing how many small things make a big one. All of that. A constant encounter! & lots of deep breaths toooooo

It's really kind of wild to think that I've been watching your videos for *Eleven* years and over that time I've always had such a deep admiration for the drive and passion you have for all the things you do while also having an additional bucketload of envy that I don't have that for myself. I know that there's obviously loads of stuff that social media doesn't show about a person's life but damn I wish I had more to show for my 20's than an already-forgotten degree and depression. Any time someone asks me what I do I just feel kind of sick because I've not worked in three years and honestly have no clue what job would make me feel fulfilled and happy in the long-term. I basically just loiter on the internet & pursue various different craft hobbies depending on the current whim. But I'm happy for you and all that you've achieved in the last decade - and at whatever point you share your writing with the world I'm sure I'm going to be quickly adding it to my book collection. Explaining what you're up to can be so hard ahha. I just mostly finished uni and have started my first job as a software engineer. Full time work is mentally draining, so I am still learning how to balance that. I've been reading when I can, and have started trying to cook more things. I was given a whole pumpkin grown in my Grandad's garden last week, so I have been trying pumpkin recipes to get through it all.

Wow, I've been wondering about the details of your job(s) forever, and that didn't disappoint! It's lovely to see you thriving so magnificently. I'm currently working on a video game. It's the biggest project I've done for a long while, and it's the first time I've made an online multiplayer game, which is exciting and intimidating in equal measures. The other thing of note I've been doing is streaming on Twitch, and I've surprised myself by making a few really good friends doing that (friendmaking has not historically been one of my strongest skills!) When I was at uni the slightly older students always seemed to be having a much better time of things than the 18-21 year-olds so I suspect you're gunna have a great time with your masters. Congrats on everything and I can't wait to hear more about your writing! I will be pre-ordering anything that says "by Rosianna Halse Rojas" on the cover within nanoseconds of that becoming possible.

I'm an educator and a social worker, and I started working freelance about a year ago and it has changed my life in the BEST way! I love being able to control my own time, and to work on multiple projects at once. I started to find myself emotionally burnt out at the fact that I was spending effectively all of my brain and time committed to moving forward the mission of one organization - when I could never fully align myself to that organization's work being the most important (because no one thing is the most important!). Also nonprofits have a huge tendency toward extremely toxic work expectations/ cultures and I needed to be away from that. Also recently did a 3 month course on anthropology that unfortunately taught me about why most of the world views my people and our culture as backward =( The course instructor wasn't thrilled that I didn't happily go along with the imperialistic world view of the materials. Other than work I read a lot, I've recently started writing reviews!, I run some small-scale book clubs with my friends and communities, I crochet a lot, follow my dog around the house a lot, listen to too many podcasts (recently have gotten very into Dr. Gameshow because it makes me belly laugh). Thank you for this wonderfully calm video! I've realized that I love low-heart-rate video content, and this is a perfect example of why.

I’m struggling to imagine a world where 2 hours seems like a long session of any game, particularly Hades- I have to work against the “just one more” pretty hard. Also games are my fixation / special interest, and I get a lot from them, even just in terms of calm, focus and abnegation. I am trying to focus some energy on self improvement / understanding through therapy, but the war against hopelessness is significant. I don’t know if I can be very useful, or accepted. Other than that, I apply for jobs that I don’t want / stress about being rejected from same. It’s not much, but it’s a life.

God Rosianna I really thought I had an idea of what you do but this is all fascinating and so cool, particularly the stuff around why you've become a Patron of the Women's Prize and that you're writing even if its not for something specific right now! I work in a fairly entry level position for an LGBTI+ charity, it's a youth service and we unfortunately are starting to see TERFism seep into the Irish discourse whereas it had felt distinctly British before (sorry Britain). Fortunately the larger women's organisations here have still been very supportive of our work and of trans women and non-binary people on the whole. I also volunteer for an LGBT helpline which is something I've been doing for about 4 years now between here and when I lived in the UK and really enjoy even though it can be tough! Best of luck starting you masters, sounds absolutely excellent!

Amazing work. I have somewhat avoided john green, not because of him, but because I am determined to only read women of colour for five years. You are making it hard the way you talk about his book 😋 Anyone have a cure for chronic fatigue? I want to try at least half of your list 🤣🤣

Oof I'm so sorry you're struggling with CF! I'm sorry for making your reading list difficult haha. Any books you've read and loved lately?

@@rosianna Thank you for enduring my moaning 😁 Tara June Winch is from my neck of the woods and I am . . . in awe. The writing is like NOTHING I have ever read and everything else is somewhat lesser for it. Much recommend. Highly cerebral. Perspective broadened.

Could the Critical Role crew become involved in P4A? Their foundation is doing great work in its first year and they’re awesome people.
