What the heck is candela? Lumens? Photonic Barriers?? Why should YOU care?

It's refreshing seeing the younger generation of the firearm community discovering what works, what doesn't, then sharing their discoveries. Carry on.

Thanks. I’ve tried unsuccessfully to understand candelas by reading. Your examples did the trick. I’ll be a much more informed buyer for my next light.

Great explanation. Sage Dynamics has an awesome video about all the lumens where he explains both as well. I'm a flashaholic who's spent way too much money and learned way too much thanks to r/Flashlight. I sometimes carry a single output tactical light with stupidly high lumens and candela for tactical stuff and always have some kind of custom light for general use stuff. I find it's easier to have lights specialized and I don't always need the tactical light when I go out. I'm excited for the Cloud Defensive vs. Modlite comparison you have coming up. Cloud's MCH is on my shortlist for my next tactical light since Modlite has terrible customer service but their EDC head has lower candela.

r/flashlight represent!! My carry flashlight is a custom S2+ with triple XPL-HI. My "tactical" flashlight is a Surefire 6z with clicky tail switch and a single mode P60 drop in.

I practice with my light to get a feel for shining it through car windows and such. Another good technique is lighting a room by shining it on the ceiling. It’s kinda fun.

I almost didn't watch this video because of the title. I didn't realize how much I didn't know about flashlights. I think mine is rated at 1300 lumens. The candela is adjustable though. I often find myself adjusting the candela frequently on the job, (I use it for maintenance purposes). I just never had the terminology to go with it. Now I have more specific information to look for when shopping for my next light.

However you did those video clips, that the first clear explanation of the difference I've seen or heard since the candlepower days. You've got a fallback career as a high school science teacher! One omission: almost every advertised light, or Chinese light, uses fake numbers. And a photonic barrier is my window shade. The contrast washout and glare blindness aren't really barriers of any kind, they're a different failure/limit in our visual systems.

I never knew any of this. I just turn on the light and say wow that's bright. LED has really upped the game. The old flashlights had that filament dark area in the middle of the beam.

To use a ballistics analogy, lumens is sort of like powder volume and candela is like sectional density. Higher lumens (or more powder) means more power. Higher Candela (or sectional density) means greater penetration and range.

Very excellent explanation. I'm looking forward to next week's video. Should be fascinating. I haven't seen many good videos on defensive light use out there. So I'll definitely keep an eye out for that. Out of curiosity have you looked into body armor at all or know of channels that have? My girlfriend is petite like you and she's having a hell of a time finding a carrier. The big issue is the shoulder straps. Most don't get short enough for her torso and the armor is always to low on her body. I know you focus primarily on concealed carry. However I figured it was worth a shot and their's no harm in asking.
@tessahbooth

Body armor isn't something I've spent any time on to be honest. Although, I do know that @cbrnart on Instagram has some graphics on body armor selection for women that could possibly be helpful!

Have you tried carrying a pocket knife? You never know what you'll use it for until you try
@tessahbooth
@tessahbooth 2 жыл бұрын
I've carried convenience knives and multitools in the past, which definitely came in handy when I had an in person job, but now that I work from home I rarely find myself needing a knife when I'm out and about. That said, I don't carry a fixed blade for self defense yet because I don't have any training with knives. Training with a fixed blade, and adding it to my EDC is a goal of mine though.
@oklahomahank2378
@oklahomahank2378 2 жыл бұрын
Good answer. It is a mistake to think of a knife as a self defense tool without training. In your case, you already have your hands and feet, pepper spray, and a light. If those don’t work it is probably time for the gun. I carry a small key chain light and Swiss Army knife (the model with scissors) on my keychain and they get used a lot, for finding those pesky waffle fries and opening catsup packages.
