This week we delve into two lesser known American wines: Marquette and Petit Manseng. Marquette is a red wine grape that grows well in cold climates, like Minnesota or Vermont. The question we really want to know is if Marquette is actually good!

I’ve tasted Marquettes from many wineries from a dozen states east of the Mississippi River. Quality and style is all over the board. It is particularly site specific. As far as food pairings go I love it with Italian fare. It really sings with the basil and oregano spiced marinara sauce!

I just planted Marquette vines last month. It grows here in Wisconsin well. Very popular due to its winter hardiness.

I planted some Marquette vines and will be making my first wines from them in two years. From what I have tasted, you can do a lot with it because it is not overbearing. I'll take your challenge for new grapes. I've been working on making new varieties for a few years now. Some are very promising and very hardy. Exciting! BTW, making a new grape takes a lot of time.

Thank you. My husband and I just bought a vineyard in Burbank (drum roll...) South Dakota! We have Marquette grapes, LaCrosse and St. Pepin. I went to the Purple Foot Wine supply in Greenfield, WI yesterday and bought my first brewing supplies. ...hoping to harvest this week. I had a bad taste of Marquette but it was new wine. It was very green, very one dimensional, very bright. Not daunted, I bought a bottle to taste in about 3 years...hope that makes it better. Great video! I am excited now to make some Marquette wine now.

Ever tried Frontenac? It's a "parent" of Marquette, a little lighter and more refined.

It’s been awhile since I visited or tasted Horton. They have always had lots of interesting varietals and blends. The soil of the area is red clay...there used to be a brick factory a few miles away. Literally a big pit where the soil was dug up, and cooked into bricks. I always commended them for their experimentation. The winery across the road is Barboursville, they are less experimental, and strangely, known for their Bordeaux blend. Seems like the varietals Virginia are being known for are Viognier, Chardonnay, Norton (resurrected in Virginia by Horton, I think), and Cabernet Franc. I wish I liked Norton better, but it is just too spicy and peppery for me. Norton’s Tannat years ago was big and bold; but way too tannic and leathery for me. I am not a Viognier fan, but I gather that is what is the best overall in Virginia (also Chardonnay and other white varietals).

I believe Horton introduced Viognier to Virginia viticulture as well. The first Viognier I ever tasted was from Horton.

I've smelled a fox before. Grape foxiness does not smell anything like a fox. Somebody simply used the word. Foxy lady? Maybe that is where it came from?

Good review, thanks! When I hear "foxy" I think "gamey", like a batch of Concord grape wine I made @ home, too much raw grape flavor if anything. How about a review of Aglianico, one of my favorite food friendly reds?

Is it the musk of the concord theyre describing?! Thats a term i never understand.
@comesahorseman
@comesahorseman 4 жыл бұрын
@@miguelmarquez4192 you really need to make a (small) batch of dry Concord grape wine to understand it; one sip and all will become clear. ;) Foxy or musky usually means grape flavor that's overpoweringly strong, so much so that it sort of grabs in the back of the throat and won't let go; almost difficult to swallow. Sorry if this is a little vague, but the flavor is difficult to describe.

Foxy is very unique, but there are levels of foxiness. The most bold is Niagara wine. I like foxines a lot, but it is so strong with Niagara that it smells and tastes like kerosene. Seriously. Detecting it is genetic. My son doesn't taste it at all, just like my wife.
