Hmmmm im with you. The idea is great but the results are a little uncontrollable and the performance of the gel and pen kind of underwhelming. The space heart turned out the best imo, perhaps a varnish to see if that helps? Also that giraffe stencil is the CUTEST THING!

Looks amazing! I think I'm gonna pick up some of that orange gel and play around with it. I wonder what sort of effect could be achieved by activating the gel in a low-heat toaster oven? I'm gonna find out lol. And if you'd like, here's some woodworking info from a former carpenter: - 220 grit is generally used as the final pass on bare wood before painting/staining/finishing. So if a project is asking for 220 you can definitely go higher if you want but it's not strictly necessary. Most pre-made hobby wood pieces are already 220 anyway. - When sanding a piece, you'll have better results if you follow the grain of the wood. Ie: if the grain is running right to left, you should sand right to left. Sanding cross-grain can get lifting and feathering and weird scratch patterns. - The heart warped because the heat gun evaporated all the moisture from that side of the wood and allowed the grain to shrink and warp, leading to that cupping effect. Sometimes that'll resolve itself over time as the wood reaclimates to ambient humidity, but you can also sometimes fix it by adding humidity yourself. Like rinsing it in the sink 😋 Random musings. I'm not entirely sure if there's a way to avoid the discoloration on the unburnt areas that happened during sanding, that's caused by the fine burnt particulate finding its way into the wood grain. I suspect adding an isolation layer to the bare wood might help, like urethane or other clear coat, or maybe a layer of mineral oil to try and saturate the grain before sanding? I'm going to run some experiments on that because now I'm curious

That heart piece is GORGEOUS! You’re too hard on yourself! I’ve never done this type of wood burning before but I have done a ton of laser engraving on wood in the past eight months. If you ever want to try again, I wonder what would happen if you put a light coat of sealer on the wood before putting the paste on. I sometimes do that, then do the design and then sand it and it helps keep the unengraved areas a lighter color because the ash doesn’t stick to the sealer. Might be something to try!

I think everything came out really pretty. Yes, it has imperfections of "being hand made", but it still looked impressive and professional. Sorry you did not like the out cones. Obviously patience is a virtue, but I am NOT sure that I would have the patience for this. Only tip: Try heating both sides of the wood like for card stock heat embossing. It might straighten the warped wood.

I love your outter space heart and your mandala. I think they look great. I've seen people do those wood burning "kits" and they don't ever come out THIS nice. I also happen to love hedgehogs and raccoons so I might be biased that I love all your little critters 😂 The Giraffe is my least favorite, but I think it's because the stencil itself. It had too many small spaces between the stencil and everything just kind of blended together.

I’m glad I’m not the only one with a craft toaster oven. One thought, maybe use an iron? As If you were melting perler beads, with the parchment paper between the iron and the wood? If heat activated it seems like that would work. Or leave it out in the sun and hope nature does a thing 😂 it was hot here today, I’d burn in this sun.

What a weird product--both versions. Mysterious, too--like, how does that stuff work?? Is it actually burning, or just changing color? Anyway, bummer about your struggles. I suppose you could try the regular way of doing it, with the burning tool. The mandala you could simply turn into an acrylic paint project. The space heart is fun, though; I wouldn't count that as a fail. Fun video =)

Scorching gel is so cool. I love the heart and I think post sanding is perfect. The one after that you hated, not so much love for that one. I wonder if the cheaper wood was a factor for that one. Do all woods scorch the same? Can you add water to a board to mask it so it doesn't scorch? It looks like so much fun. I want to do wood burning, but I am half scared I will start a fire in my house. I have the Dremel tool to do it (not using paste). I did just look up the get and want some of that too hahaha

Lower number = rougher grit. Higher number = smoother grit. You start at a rougher grit/lower number, like 80 or so would be fine, then work your way up through a couple of stages until you hit the 220 grit.
