The first production versions of the single seater F-102 also couldn't break the sound barrier. It took a redesign of the fuselage, changes to the wing, and I think a different engine to make that happen, and even then it was underperforming compared to the expected performance as advertised to the Air Force. The dual seater made it only worse because it was heavier in addition to retaining the old fuselage cross section that had failed in the single seater.
