I'm from Indianapolis and went to school with the kids of the Speedrome's former owner. Legends of Indycar and Nascar have raced at the speedrome (AJ Foyt, Johnny Rutherford, Darrell Waltrip, Bobby Allison, Tony Stewart and others). It's a crazy thing to watch!

When I was young, and living in suburban Chicago, my friends and I would often go to Santa Fe Speedway. It operated from 1953 through 1995 and featured weekly stock car racing and motorcycle competition in addition to midget and sprint car racing and the track’s popular demolition derbies and I did see a few figure 8 races there. The demolition derbies were the best though. They didn't do them like most placed, it was an every man for himself with everyone going in any and every direction. It was team demolition derby racing. It was like roller derby. There would be two teams of cars on the track and to win a team had to have one car make a certain number of laps around the 1/4 mile clay track ... while the rest would block for them and intentionally smash the cars of the other team and in the process often resulting in not only one car 'taken out,' but also the car hitting it. It was high speed demolition derby racing. I've never seen it done that way anywhere else, though it likely has been. But it was so much more fun and exciting than a standard demolition derby. The figure 8 racing was fun, there was excitement and there were wrecks, but with the team demolition derby it was assured that there would be wrecks and wrecks at speed.
@RyTrapp03 ай бұрын
Holy hell, I've known about figure-8 racing for a while - but a 3hr enduro is WILD! That has to be positively mentally exhausting, your focus just pegged at 10-tenths for as long as you can possibly keep it together.
