What The Hell Did I Read This Week?

Sometimes a comic book is so awful all i can ask is "what the hell did I read?" Image Comics 7174 Annual #1 is swuch a comic book. A comic cloaked in the veil of depth that in actuality is as shallow as the rest of the drivel we call modern art. This comic is a pretentious, self-undulgent tour-de-force. Celebrating how important comic artist Ashley Woods sees himself. IDW's Star Trek Discovery: Adventures in the 32nd Century #1 also leaves an impression. What IDW were thinking greenlighting this as a #1 issue. Based on the comic nothing of importance or of substance will come from Star Trek Discovery: Adventures in the 32nd Century. Even worse that 7174 Annual #1, it's compeltely forgettable. What the hell did I read this week? 2 very poor comics that had no business being published in the first place. They aren;t worth the trees, energy or time that went into making them.

It's seeing these kind of art published that pissed me off. I draw in a detailed horror style ( Tales from the crypt)with woman similar to Frank Cho,Terry Dodson/ Izayoi Seishin....i pay attention to pacing and structure and yet others overlooked for this drivel.

I think it's a little unfair to do the arthouse books as worst of the week, I am glad you're dropping them after this. Sticking to superhero dreck makes sense given the overall focus of the channel. I am personally a fan of Ash Wood's illustration style and remember the 90s when he turned in some good work mostly on Ghost Rider 2099 (I have a couple of those pages on my wall) and Spawn. These days after cashing in on 90s comics and a brief run as a character designer in Hollywood he is mostly a gallery artist now who sometimes puts out self indulgent comics and art books. I personally enjoy them for the art, the words don't matter. But if you're going into them looking for something more than borderline abstract art, it's a waste of money and time. I think the only audience for this annual is Ash's pre-existing fanbase, and/or people who just like looking at unique, minimalist illustration technique.

Wes - When an issue is truly bad, how about looking back at the original solicitation? See if the solicit had warning signs, or if the final product didn't really reflect what was described, etc.

I subscribed to Paramount for 1883 and I tried Discovery while I was there…. Discovery fits into your video of companies trying to replace their audience with a new better audience. Which is weird Star Trek has… had a diverse fan base. And now they really want a exclusively tumbler/cat lady/ audience now.

Why do comic companies continue devoting large parts of their lines to the cat lady/wine aunt demographic? (Actually I know why, it's because this is most editors and many creators. There just isn't an audience because cat ladies don't read comic books.)

It’s been 3 months since I’ve entered a comic book store. It’s not the same like it was when I was a kid. A lot of books with weak art and terrible stories. Last series I read that was good was Venom/King in Black. Some indie comics aren’t bad but u can tell the industry is only focused to make money.

Ashley Wood is a great artist and designer. He leads a company producing art toys and sells them all over the world. Learn some art history and try drawing anything before you comment on something you know nothing of.

I don't know. Cats are great!! If I had to read the STD comic, I'd rather read about a cat than the normal crap that show is about. Plus the cat hates everyone on the ship. That's gotta be worth something! 😺🐾 Two paws up!

I completely disagree that art is nonessential. Art is what brings joy to life. It gives life meaning, and it helps you through difficult times. Any society that doesn't value art for its own sake (like ours today, that treats it as either consumerist drivel or as propaganda machine) becomes sick almost overnight. In Soviet Russia, art was pretty much forbidden and in cities where they had the dull soviet style concrete housing everywhere, suicide rates skyrocketed, just to have another example.
