I can’t gush about this series enough. Tactics Ogre and FFT created and launched the massively successful isometric tactics genre. You have no idea how much this hurts mate... Tactics Ogre is my all-time favorite Tactical RPG (with Vandal Hearts 2: Heaven's Gate being a close second). That unresolved cliffhanger will forever haunt me. The PS1 translation of TO was *so good.* I still prefer it over the PSP re-translation. The language was raw and violent, and really captured the feel of a genocidal war going on. It is no coincidence that Yasumi Matsuno was a student of political science and international relations, and Tactics Ogre was written with the backdrop of the 1990s Yugoslav Wars in mind, with Valeria Island being a fantasy version of Yugoslavia and Walsta, Gargastan, and Bacram being analogues of the Bosnians, Serbs, and Croats, with King Dolgare being a Tito figure and the Kingdom of Zenobia and the Holy Lodis Empire being stand-ins for the United States and Soviet Union. Anyway the reason the saga starts at "Episode 5" is because Matsuno is also a big Star Wars fan so he followed in its footsteps by starting in the middle of the story.

My favorite series to strea. . Funnily enough, we never did get 3 of those 4 first chapters. Time to annoyingly nitpick! (Sorry) They technically didn't quit Quest, they were sorta...pushed there. One of those "higher ups say so" situations. He went into details about that in a recent interview. The sad part about Knight of Lodis is that it brought in a lot of interesting ideas that could have been a great jumping off point for other games. Also, I believe it was generally considered to be chapter 2, presumably having 3-4 being other antagonists' origins, with 1 being the original Ogre Battle story, and 8 being what FFT became, with original story ideas seeming like a big team up from all the games. Also of note, before leaving, Matsuno had submitted plans for an Ogre Battle 3. It sounded like they would have done if it he was there. While the project was ...a long story, Unsung Story was apparently related somehow. A currently unreleased mobile game called Lost Legion (I think) was also supposed to use a lot of old Ogre Battle scrapped ideas, and early videos even used a similar look to the PSP remake's menus. A note, though, the PSP remake was still successful, considering the niche genre. On top of that, the thing was a labor of love, and it shows (even if they forgot to balance 2 of the classes). I mean for a 1500+ hour strategy game to have only 2 known and barely reproduceable bugs, that's something. That aside, the game had 3 DLCs, and apparently sold like hotcakes overseas. It was less so here, but still regularly ranks among the best PSP games. That all aside, the official series may be questionable, but they're trying Ogre Battle into FF Online now, it seems, with a (technically impossible) part of LUCT's story being added only recently. Plus many of the armors in game are from TO. Maybe it will spark some new life back to the series, since, truth be told, Matsuno isn't needed for this. He created it, but OB64 and KoL did just fine without his pen, and he's written some...really bad stuff since then. Also, the modding scene is alive and kicking. MOTBQ has Hard Type (In the Lap of the Gods, a great difficulty rebalance. LUCT SNES has Chronicle Valeria, a massive rebalance that introduces a ton of stuff, like new characters, classes, a deeper morality system, personal reputations, a day/night cycle, and more. (Jp Only, unfortunately) LUCY PSP has One Vision, an Immersion Overhaul that remakes every single Class, Skill, Ability, and Item in the game to a really awesome degree, I have an entire site dedicated to trying to document it all (niche-games.com). He's still updating this regularly. OB64 Hammerfall is also being worked on by folks that love the game. This one's newer, but coming along nicely with general needed rebalances. Ok, schpiel done!

Tactics Ogre LUCT has the best plot and story of any RPG I've played. Three different story routes and the ability to jump around in the story and play different paths once you have completed it. Also great character customisation with lots of jobs and i loved the music. Turn based games went through a phase of being unfashionable but i think they could have success if they made something new for the Switch. The reality is if they made a new Tactics Ogre game it would probably be a First Person Shooter ...

Honestly, for what it's worth, the LUCT remake was the best selling PSP game during the month of its release, so to call it "unsuccessful" is a bit harsh. Still, when you have the backing of a triple A developer, sales need to be stellar to be considered a "success". It is a shame that new chapters of the story will likely never be written.

I think this franchise might be the most tragic one I know of. Tactics Ogre on the PSP and Ogre Battle 64 are two of the greatest RPGs I've ever played. They are rare in that nearly every element - story, art, gameplay, music, etc - is top notch. I honestly can't think of any real criticisms of them. The fact that Ogre Battle is basically a genre unto itself is also quite tragic, as the gameplay is very fun. I really hope a new entry releases someday.

Ogre Battle was a fantastic game (and yes, I mean everything from the tarot to the UX) and highly underrated. I get it, Fire Emblem and Langrisser exist and the players loved the whole FFT/Tactics Ogre gameplay style. I just think that it is missing that feeling of army units moving on city states and liberating them. That was a great system and it's a huge shame that they basically threw that in a trash bin because too few gamers could appreciate something so much more historically accurate than the single unit TRPG playstyle for what was supposed to be a strategy warfare theme. Like I get it, the average gamer wanted an RPG with a different layout, not a war strategy game. For those of us who actually enjoy true war games it's kind of disappointing. Then again the idea of just 5 units in a single battle is sort of limited for that purpose too. The warfare system from Suikoden would have made for an interesting TRPG with true warfare elements in it though. Sadly that was all but forgotten.

I like the video, but there is a major problem: saying that the series was a commercial failure is not quite true. I decided to look for the number of games sold in the series, and I posted the results on Wikipedia (just look for the article Ogre Battle, about the series). There were more than 2 million games sold in the series. Tactics Ogre alone sold almost 1 million copies, and this is not counting the Virtual Console sales (in Japan) or the number of copies the PSP remake sold in North America.

Dont think that is the main issue from my admittedly anecdotal experience. Afterall, if Waifus was what truly sold games. Persona would have been a smash hit starting with Persona 3 and up. Not Persona 5. Fire Emblem Three Houses de-emphasized both the avatar and Waifus (you only get married in the ending, if you so choose). Yet, it is the most successful entry in the franchise. From my anecdotal experiences, the big issue facing Matsuno games in general is the User Experience. Every action takes far more steps than it needs to in order to execute. If you want to shoot a guy. How many buttons do you need to press in TO? How many do you need in Fire Emblem? How many do you need in Jagged Alliance? How many do you need in XCOM? I am the only one in my group of friends who likes Matsuno games, and their reasons for getting into FE but not TO, is simply put, because they felt the game was too slow.

The best for me was Ogre Battle. Sad story with all the miss step down the road. Disconnect from Tactic Ogre stuff. The game was hard to figure out in that time, so just a few felt in love. I believe remaking this game Ogre Battle could bring shine on the legacy once and for all with native creator for visualizing the story

Ogre Battle 64 is my absolute favorite game in the Ogre Battle series, me and my mom spent most of our time trying to beat the game before the other can, using different classes and units for our characters and funnily enough, I beat the game first even tho I took the time actually recruit some monsters in all the areas and I kept experimenting with different units and whatnot. XD

You have to beat tactics ogre. It's very good.

LUCT has one of my favorite stories of all time. Even though Denam was kind of a daddy’s boi.

On one of the endings (the good lord ending I guess) Lodis decided to invade Valeria, but in the canon princess ending it doesn't happen, maybe because Tartaros truly trusted Catiua and decided to have a more peaceful approach instead of letting Lodis do a full scale invasion.

So I grew up with this style of game... FFT, Disgaea, and I loved them... This game series died because compared to other ones it was incredibly slow and clunky, bland at points, and put heavy consequences on people... and magic kind of sucked starting at MP 0 meaning a non-mage could cast just as many spells per turn as a mage. Then FE started doing well which remedied most of the issues people would've had. Note that while most games have a few of these issues... the problem was compared to its competition it had too many. ...but there is nothing wrong with liking the series. Some people like the MP 0 system, others hate it. Just the more divisive stuff you have the more difficult it is to find people.

If you liked Ogre Battle/Ogre 64, you should keep your eye on Symphony of War: The Niphilim Saga. It looks like it will be a mixture of Ogre Battle, Langrisser, and Bahamut Lagoon.

The Knight of Lodis is one of my favorites games of all time, I play it to this very day.

5:40 That' incorrect. Person of Lordly Caliber is the first original title (followed by Knights of Lodis).

I started out with the original fft (one of my favorite games ever), then the remake. Then I played the super Nintendo version of tactics ogre which I loved, then the remake of tactics ogre which I felt was the most well balanced and the best of the tactics games, to bad more people didn't know more about it.

Ogre Battle is a pure masterpiece. They dont make games like they used to, unfortunatelly...
