Clearly Joe Biden was not responsible for Youngstown. The question is: Is this the way he wants things to remain? Downtrodden and reliant on the government? Poor and uninspired? Complacent and stagnant? Because it kinda seems that's what he does want based on the history of his actions. I grew up during the Reagan era in Ohio. At that time the GOP, Fiscal conservatives, social conservatives and evangelicals believed the follow. "The middle-class was too well educated and made too much money." I watched as they outsourced jobs, right sized companies, eliminated pensions, began freezing wages in manufacturing, reduced health benefits and voted down damn near every school levy. This is the end result of these shortsighted greed policies. And the Democrats did nothing to stop it. So as the saying goes "you get what you give." I wish them and others luck. It will take something we don't have in America to fix this problem. Unity.

Actually youngstown didn't look as bad a Nick Portrayed it to be. It looked like it needed some good landscaping and I totally liked the way some of the houses didn't have Neighbors living across the street. If I liked the East Coast I would buy a house there. Hello, Ohio native here. Trust me, the problems that are happening in Youngstown are happening all over the state. They started looonngg before the current administration, and the one before that, and the one before that. Point is, this has been a long term problems that has many interconnected parts. Mainly the fact that people still believe that the factories and jobs will come back. They wont. And if they do, trust me they wont pay what people are thinking they will. There needs to be a long term shift in political, social and economic factors to see anything change here!

I am 74 and grew up in Y-Town. My neighborhood had Poles, Irish, Germans, Italians, Slovaks, Jews, Ukrainians, and a few Puerto Ricans for good measure. I saw tattoos on forearms, talked to concentration camp survivors, men that served in the German Army, Men that had served the US Army, and even one fellow that had served in the Polish Cavalry in 1939. What an education for a young boy. Food, WOW, international food show every day in the neighborhood. Roman Catholics, Byzantine Catholics, Russian Orthodox, Jews, Lutherans, Ukrainian Orthodox, some how we all got along!

Youngstown is a white flight city. It’s not some sad run down forgotten post apocalyptic town like you’re showing and some of the places you showed never actually had houses. Like many industrial cities in America once the mills shut down the population just went where the jobs were. The city of Youngstown itself is now a college town so most of its money is spent on the area on or around Youngstown State which looks amazing compared to when I went there only 20 years ago. Everyone else in that area moved to the suburbs which are mostly ranked very high on quality of life measuring lists. So no, politics has nothing to do with Youngstown’s current state, it is well taken care of by politicians on both sides of the isle which is why In spite of everything you showed and said half the stuff in their downtown is brand new and had you driven a few blocks west the view would have been A LOT different. The places you saw look like that because those are the last hold outs in those areas refusing to give up their property for gentrification projects. A lot of older people like the guy that’s talked about in this video are buying up land because it’s cheap just so the city can’t build in that area and will protest any plans to improve the city with the excuse that if the population grows that will bring in crime. If people with money can’t build they can’t move in and if they can’t move in that affects the cities income stats.

Those roads absolutely had houses on them, the sidewalks are still under the grass, on the border of Hubbard there are many streets that they leveled and it's the best it's looked since the sixties. I'm a 2022 graduate of Youngstown State University, but I am not from the area. Living in Youngstown for four years was a formative experience, and for me was the closest to "big city" living I ever have been. There is a lot of culture in Youngstown and pride and I think I am a better person for going to college there versus a more sheltered university like Kent.

Goodness, this area collapsed long before Joe Biden. Industry left. Jobs were sent elsewhere. Youngstown even suffered greatly during the Great Depression. Same story goes for Detroit. Charlie Bo has some sad footage especially of Detroit's East side. This situation is repeated everywhere industry left. The same situation is rampant in England. It isn't a Black people or White people reason. When jobs go, poverty enters, society often collapses. Those who are able to, move elsewhere; those who can't , remain, and things get bleaker and bleaker. Ok I live in a city called Niles. It’s literally right next to Youngstown. I’m in Youngstown everyday, I attend college at Youngstown state university (ysu). And I know it’s hard to tell the entire history of my area in 14 minutes but I don’t believe you did a good job at all. Yes, Youngstown has been hit hard by the loss manufacturing. However that was 50 years ago and our economy has diversified and moved on. The shots youre showing are the absolute worst parts of Youngstown. It’s disrespectful that you didn’t show any of the downtown areas with hundreds of businesses, quarter million dollar homes in the city, mercy health hospitals which is one of the best hospitals in the area, you made no mention of mcdonald steal with is 5 minutes from where you were driving, the list goes on. yes, parts of Youngstown are extremely run down and poor, but that's just statistics. other part of the city look nothing like that. Youngstown has a lot of business. a lot of the high skill laborers and business men and women commute to work. so because of that the surrounding area is a lot more wealthy. i don't appreciate you using my Hometown as a way to score political points. I’d also like to point out that we’re an hour away from Cleveland and Pittsburg. It’s hard to imagine if you’re not from the area, but look at the area on google earth. This entire area from Pittsburg, through Youngstown, and to Cleveland are connected not only by road but by business, manufacturing, Union labor jobs, and the service sector. So Dems don't send money (or very little, just enough to keep people voting but not enough to make a difference) because we Youngstown'ers vote Democrat. No one "allows" companies to eliminate jobs. My company installed one piece of technology and laid off 70 employees in one afternoon. The company never went anywhere, just the jobs did. Even my job in finance requires two people on computers when it used to require ten with pen and paper not so long ago. Automation will kill more jobs than outsourcing ever will. Wait until self driving vehicles kill the transport jobs.

I live in Youngstown and love my community. In our community, it is tight knit and folks have pride in the ownership of their homes. Lawns are neatly manicured and many of those that live in this community are not on drugs or live a life of crime. There is no denying that element is present, but crime generally is not a random event, with the majority of the crimes perpetrated by a known offender. I see a lot of promise in the community. Downtown has changed within the last 10 years, transforming blight to vibrancy. There are trendy businesses piping up near YSU and of course, along with the blight and 20,000 homes, there are homes throughout various parts of Youngstown that is worth well over 100G. Families are constantly present in Mill Creek Park and events held at the Coveli center, and that community unity , I believe is gaining momentum. I would say that if folks take an active role in their own community, changes will happen. It is not as bad as the video makes it seem. It will take a while, but I believe that it has the potential to make a complete turnaround.

It was called Black Monday, not Black Tuesday. I remember Youngstown in the 60s and 70s. The place was booming. Its sad what happened to this once great city. What I wouldn't give to see those smoke stacks from the mills up and running again and emitting their billowing smoke over the skyline. There was a sense of all will be ok when those mills were running because they created ample jobs as a result of having the still mills in operation. Been over 40 years since Black Monday and we can't even come close to making good enough improvements in order to sustain a stable job market and it doesn't look like any real improvements to this once booming town will be occurring any time soon.

I lived in the area my whole life. I live in boardman for anyone from ytown. Most outsiders always focus on the bad and never anything positive. Yes ytown is in rough shape and before things get better the residents need to take back their communities because I believe the majority of the people are good people trying to get by and a small percentage cause the trouble. I like living here I hate hot weather and prefer not live on the coast below sea level or on a fautline. I just wish people would show positive things as well!

Its really not that BAD. I live 30 minutes away from Youngstown on the PA border. I go to school at YSU almost everyday and feel safe. They've done a lot to fix up the city in the last 20 years. You showed no footage of the good parts like the campus or downtown. There are definitely some bad parts, like in all cities, but its a lot better than most people think. There's a lot of hidden gems that people don't even realize exist in Youngstown. For example their business incubator ranked number 1 in the world a few years ago. The world renowned business incubator alone brings in tons of new jobs and businesses to the area. I agree the city could be better, and again there's some bad areas. But a quick drive through doesn't tell the whole story. Give Youngstown the respect it deserves.

America depends WAY to much on foreign countries. Most of our drugs and medicines come from China, a country which doesnt give a crap about the environment. If anything we should be producing and manufacturing more in America because we have the technology and knowledge to dispose of any harmful byproducts from manufacturing in a proper and responsible way that is less impactful to the environment and the people in the area and also give the workers proper protection from any harmful substances they might have to work with. Now compare that to the manufacturing practices in China (dont forget the slave labor) and the dumping of harmful byproducts directly into the lakes and land without any treatment. I would rather pay extra knowing my money will be going to support a hard working American family, and not the Chinese Communist Party which hates America and the idea of Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. MillCreek Park is about the only place I return to when visiting family. The West Side was the last holdout of the city that was decent but even that is barely still inhabitable for working middle class families. Boardman, Canfield and Poland townships outside Greater Youngstown are the only places I’d consider raising a family. It’s hard to believe how many NEIGHBORHOODS are actually gone since I left in early 1990’s. GM Lordstown leaving nailed the coffin shut, IMHO.

I lived in Youngstown for a long time. The situation is terrible there and cities like Youngstown all throughout the Rust Belt have suffered a similar fate. The government and the corporations that built towns like this definitely have sold out the working class people that live there. I really don’t like Joe Biden but I do not think it’s accurate to put this on him and say this is “an emerging kind of communism”. Corporations didn’t leave cities like Youngstown because of taxes, it is almost impossible for a middle-class American workers to compete with workers overseas that work for pennies. Trade deals by the government and corporate greed are what sold these towns out. Every four years politicians make a stop in Youngstown and they talk about how they’re going to bring back manufacturing - both red and blue. You really should cover Rochester Ny. At one time it had 3 of the world's largest companies, and were the cities largest employers, Kodak, XEROX, Rochester Products, & Boush & Lomb, now the last o 2 are barely hanging on. Now the 3 biggest employers are UR Medicine, Unity Health Systems, (both hospital companies), and Wegmans grocery. Add to that, that what used to be beautiful neighborhoods, are just hoods that get fixed up only to go back to hoods. As I was taught growing up, you know neighborhoods are bad if the street names are just a number or a letter. (Avenue A-E, 1st-10th street for example) These areas generally have generational welfare, (some of my family) high crime, and unemployment.

I left the Youngstown/Warren area about 45 years ago, right before everything imploded. The area was nearly 100% dependent on the domestic steel industry, which at that time was controlled by the USW at the peak of its power within very outmoded facilities. A perfect storm for a crash that would never recover. My parents were in upper management of USS and retired. Sadly, my stepfather lost his health care coverage immediately (I was told the union people kept theirs for a while), and developed cancer, which consumed their entire savings as people paid their health care bills back then. The union stronghold which favored the Democrat party never left the mindset of the area to this day. It's the main reason Mary Barra chose to abandon Lordstown, which is a recent example of the toxic business environment that exists. Now there are generational families that know nothing other than receiving some form of assistance from the government. The sad fact is they are unaware of the hidden inflation tax the government creates by creating fiat currency they can't pay for.

I grew up in here and its been going down for years. Drugs and McDonalds are the biggest employers. Houses are torn down because drugs and empty. Schools are lagging behind. Church is their only hope. Politicians take the money out of Youngstown and put it in the surroundings suburbs. Youngstown State is positive and hopeful. It could be a nice place however schools, jobs, better homes, prayers, and therapy is needed so bad here. The people need something to believe in once again and stability. It’s a good video, but it seems a little bit oversimplified in scope. I live in West Virginia, about an hour away from Youngstown. Keep in mind that, to us in West Virginia, Ohio is generally considered a wealthy neighbor state where things are much better and we envy it in many ways, even if we don’t easily admit it - which might give you some perspective on what it’s like in West Virginia. We’re like a Third World country inside of America. But worrying about the fall of our country is almost not worth the anxiety, anger and sadness it brings to our lives. Why? Because It’s already fallen. It’s just - you know, history is long - the Roman Empire didn’t fall in a day or a week. It was a colossus that fell slowly and heavily over hundreds of years. So it is, too, with the USA. We’re already falling. It’s just a long process, a long way to fall. But the momentum is beyond the tipping point without radical changes to our socio-political landscape - and those changes are not coming. We’re a country so divided by tribal factions that we cannot even agree on what is or is not reality, what is or is not truth and - most importantly - what the United States is supposed to be. We were just visiting my cousin from Iowa cause he just came back removing a tumor in his head and came to see my uncle. We were heading home and that's when it happen. They went not too far and killed another guy but the other girl manage to escape to, the gun jammed on her. There was no reason for them to kill anyone, it was just a thrill killing at random. It was the worst shooting in Akron's history during that week.

If good citizens were in large influenced to protect themselves with guns and just get rid of the problem, those assholes going around killing for “fun” wouldn’t exist. And people who think twice about messing with one to begin with. Less crime means less need for taxes to justify cops. Less bad people means less money in taxes spent in the court system or jails. And when bad people going to the grave instead of jail, again, people don’t have to pay for them in taxes. The area gets nicer, business booms because more people want to stay in the area. Taxes can get lowered and more people(especially Akron University students) have more money in their pocket where it’s needed most.

What happened to Youngstown? Manufacturing was pulling out of the Youngstown area. These employers provided jobs to people living in Youngstown, Lordstown, Warren, Niles, Canfield and the like. Residents, like my own family, wanted to sell their homes and move out of the area. There were jobs elsewhere. However, Trump went to Youngstown in 2017 to visit the Lordstown plant. He promised people that he would save the plant, and promised residents that manufacturing jobs would be returning to the region. He told the crowd: "Don’t move. Don’t sell your house.” He was the President of the United States. Surely he would keep his promise to save the plant. But Trump didn’t save the plant. He ignored it. He made those promises so he could try and remain in power. The General Motors Lordstown plant shut down. Can Biden fix it? No. Job loss is job loss. GM's former plant in Lordstown might return to mass vehicle production in 2022, creating thousands of jobs (if true). I'm not holding my breath for it.

I was born on the Northside but I grew up on the East Side. My grandfather owns "Brownlee's Mower Repair" there and it hurts to see how much Youngstown has declined. They keep trying to build it up with stores but most of the places that were there when I was little (I'm 21 now) have left, like McGuffy Rd for example so many things have closed down. I moved from Youngstown when I was 18, but I will always love that place. I just wish there was a way for us to build it back up

I'm from Austintown, which is a suburb of youngstown, and grew up in this area my whole life. I went to youngstown state university, got multiple degrees, and have struggled for years after members of my family got hooked on drugs and hurt my life. It's a good area overall but also not much really going on economically here. My wife actually has had luck with work, and soon we will be moving, down to Cincinnati. Where she has a great promotion from her company and I have a job waiting making much more as well. It's definitely a big change since I've never lived in another area before but I'm excited and looking forward to the change.

Chip manufacture needs educated employees that can program computers, and work with software mods. Modern chip making requires high tech clean rooms and computer operated automation.

I've driven through that neighborhood, also known as the Sharon Line, named for the train that used to run from Youngstown to Sharon, Pennsylvania. I remember reading somewhere that there was a "master plan" in Youngstown where the city would grow to about 250,000 residents, hence the "pre-building" of the East Side neighborhoods. However, as we all know, the steel industry in the United States went totally to shit, and much of the Sharon Line/NE Side would remain unbuilt. The city actually even permanently closed many of those streets a few years ago, and on my last trip there I noticed that a lot of them are now almost totally unrecognizable, with nature taking its course.

I don’t live in Youngstown but I work there. It feels quite literally like my “home away from home.” This feature focuses on what is gone, what is lost. But I see every day people committed to being a positive part of this community. On a side note I’m so sick of hearing all this harkening back to the steel mills shutting down and what a great place it was. Rose colored glasses. It’s the same mentality behind “make America great again.” We cannot go backwards. Looking back will never get us anywhere. Boo. I’m not picking up what you’re putting down. There’s more to the YO than this.

@@bellinghammond no I don’t work for either the government or YSU or the hospital. I work for a nonprofit located right in the middle of downtown. There is a robust and thriving entertainment district in Youngstown that most of the folks who complain “there’s nothing to do here” ignore completely.

You were not driving on the North end of town. You drove through the South side and East side. Know your sides of town. Also, talk to someone who is actually from the city. The guy your talking to would be scared of his own shadow. Wealthy side of town? At one point all the sides of town were doing well.

I did service all over Ohio in almost every city during the 80's. Youngstown didn't scare me much. Cleveland, East Cleveland, Dayton...those were much more risky.

I've lived in the Youngstown area for 42 years, and if you wanted to see the worst Y-town has to offer, you should have went to the South side or the East side. I remember in the 80's when the mafia ran the city it actually wasn't that bad. But when Strollo got popped and then flipped, that was it for the mob in the area. It seems like the drugs got 10x worse after the mob got knocked out of the box. Now, with GM gone and Vallourec (V&M Star) not being the area-savior it was hoped to be, there just isn't much here for jobs. The Northeast Ohio Correctional Center in Youngstown is one of the highest-paying employers in the area, but it's a privately owned prison, and a horribly run one at that. I used to work there, so I know from experience how bad that place is. Now, Lordstown Motors is being sold to a Taiwanese (I think) company to make electric cars, but that could have been a couple thousand good paying jobs right there had it stayed American-owned. Now with foreign ownership who knows what they're going to do? It seems to be an exercise in futility, nothing seems to ever change in this area.

Beyond agree, when the Italian/jesuit mafia had more control of urban areas, at least whytes could live there, but italians simply were out bred, same with any European american, we don't make replacement for the future now anyway, it's obvious, go to any city and see a day care, all mu**d.

I think blaming China will never help the US to fix their own problems. The US thrived in manufacturing till competition grew. The future is automation, so manufacturing jobs are on a death march anyway. Any administration looking at bringing back the past glories is doomed to fail, as time only goes forward. The US thought having uneducated people would provide cheap labor, but since labor was not needed, they found themselves with a lot of hopeless people. If the US can bring manufacturing jobs back, it will be by being able to build better, faster and cheaper. An unskilled workforce cannot build better and faster than machines, and the only way to do it cheaper would be doing it for free. I think Uber and Instacart are giving us a view of the future, and it is not pretty.

Was born in Youngstown, but grew up in Texas... thank God. Moved back to Youngstown a year ago and wow, this place is a shot hole. Thank you, parents. You saved my life. Work in the medical field in the Yo. Can confirm. Hospital is major employer here, but so is the EMS field. With so many private EMS companies, the field is in high demand.

I live in Youngstown, originally from Erie PA. Both are very similar. Youngstown is just less populated and more abandoned. Most of the scum took off years ago to other cities. It was way more dangerous 20 years ago. But don’t get it twisted, Youngstown still can be sketchy in some parts. There are still shootings and robberies. I don’t feel unsafe because I’m not involved in criminal activity, and I don’t put myself in bad situations. It’s easy to buy an affordable house here and union labor work is hiring all the time. Majority of entry jobs start at $12-15 an hour. You can find a NICE house that’s been redone for between 60-100k. If you work remotely this is the place to move. If you’re starting a company this is the place to start it. Plenty of people who will work hard for you if you give them a good wage. Cheap taxes and cheap property. Youngstown area has the same amenities as other places only 10-15 mins away in Boardman or niles (suburbs). Just stay away from Warren…they are even worse off.

I absolutely love Ohio especially the rural areas. Towns like Youngstown are indeed rough around the edges so to speak but somehow I still find beauty in them... and I moved here from Florida 9 years ago. Imagine that!

I have lived in Youngstown for 10 years. There are good areas and bad areas, and sometimes they are only a mile apart. There are good people to meet and fun things to do if you know where to look. Plus, mill creek park is 10/10.

I was in Panama a couple of years ago and drove around much of the country. There are a lot of truly poor people. They have no government subsidies like the US and still I didn't see much of this. It isn't poverty that causes this. Its people that make a slum not the geography.

I have lived here my whole life, I'm 42 now. I consider myself stuck here because there are no good jobs which makes it extremely hard to move away from here. There is severe drug use here. The city has began to tear down a lot of the abandoned houses but it is a huge hill to climb.

My husband and I moved here from Houston for his job (I know, definitely against the norm). Both of us have great jobs, so we're what our friends in Youngstown call "Youngstown Rich"--what would be considered middle class in Houston. We bought one of the old mini-mansions on the Northside for a good price. A lot of what seems to be holding back Youngstown is that almost everyone who lives here has grown up here. And Youngstown itself has a TERRRRRRRRRRIBLE reputation! Almost everyone I know lives in one of the more affluent or middle class 'burbs...Boardman, Canfield, Poland, Austintown, and they tell me how their parents forbade them from even going in the city limits growing up. It seems like everyone who's grown up here complains about how bad Youngstown is, but doesn't want to do anything to change it, from the average citizen to the politicians. And there is no new blood here in to inject any new ideas. My husband has a lot of ideas of what he would like to do to make Youngstown better, but I assume people here would be resistant. Oh well....

Living next door to Youngstown, there’s a lot wrong with this video. Focusing on the worst part of the city while majority of Youngstown (which includes boardman and austintown etc) are far nicer than this. On top of this manufacturing is not the future in any country let alone ours and we shouldn’t be striving to try and bring back low paying jobs that are hard to do when the future can be so much easier than that. Manufacturing is going to full automation very soon and that’s not going away anywhere.
