Omg!! I can’t believe you covered this! My fiancées father and Steve Moncuse were the ones who created this original comic! They first made it as a comic (we have the original cover) they sold it to the tv company! Sadly my father in law is no longer with us but Steve is still alive and always treasures the comic because it reminds him of the times with my father in law! However they also hated the show and wished they kept it for themselves! Lol also they actually were basing it to try and beat out the teenage mutant ninja turtles which were also hugely popular at the time! Just some extra info for you 😊

The main issue the plague adult cartoons is that the feel like they have to force in jokes to justify them being "adult cartoons". Mainly jokes depth is just "haha, you can't say or show that in a kids show, that's what makes it funny". That's a thing about older simpsons, you can go multiple episodes without any sex jokes, while many modern adult shows will put as much sex imagery and jokes as possible.

I remember this show, and the Simpsons sight gag. A few others tried to take the prime time slot like Family Dog and Stressed Eric (the latter was a dark comedy originally from the UK). Stressed Eric's dark comedy was usually on point but audiences were not very ready for it. The successful shows that still exist in our consciousness figured out how to mix the dark mature comedy with the more lighthearted wacky stuff.
