That's a really cool signal! I believe I understand why the signal was built that way: Trees block any sort of proper view to be had around the tight corner, so the lights of the crossing were assigned to the Railroad Crossing warning sign. Because the two "R's" are positioned horizontally, it would be distracting to have the lights on either side of the letters, or even below them, since the "R's" would blend in as some sort of pattern. And so, to catch the attention of unsuspecting drivers, the lights are fixed vertically like a stop sign to give a proper warning to the people approaching the crossing. Thanks for sharing, dumbbuff! 🎩👌🏻

That's actually kind of cool. There's a similar sign in my town which lights up. It's at the top of a hill, and it says "Red Signal Ahead", because there's a traffic light at the bottom of said hill that you can't see from the top, and when the light at the bottom is red, it lights up.
@johnwhitley28982 жыл бұрын
Very Cool! I remember these along the streets crossing the "SP", now Up tracks here in Tucson before the loss of the industrial/warehouse area along the ways and yards in the '90's. Once the "gentrification" was done UP's yards and tracks were more or less isolated from the public. It's too bad because I remember walking across the tracks and yards, on the pedestrian walkways, there was equipment in use by SP, (Southern Pacific), that probably dated from the turn of the century.... It wasn't broken and was still in use! Gone but not forgotten!

These are a very good idea for grade crossings around a corner. A driver is warned to slow down/be prepared to stop. They should install more of these lighted signs in similar situations.
@jppicur12 жыл бұрын
I've seen this idea before where there is an obscured view of the level crossing and its signals. There is/was one in Thunder Bay ON where a road twisted in an S curve down a slope. The advance lights were a crossbuck-flashing lights combination. The crossing itself was also protected by a crossbuck and flashing lights. The road led into a pulp mill; the rail line was a spur into the mill. I'm guessing the advance warning was mostly for heavy trucks, giving them a chance to stop in time.

1. Lmao the horn 2. Lmao the train is going backwards 3. Lmfao they have lights and bells and gates and extra signs, but here in Canada some railroad crossings only have stop signs...
@captainoveur74468 жыл бұрын
Sgt. Smoores The train is not going backwards. That is what is called a push pull train. The train can be operated from the locomotive on one end or the cabcar on the other end. In this case the engineer was opersting the train from the cabcar.

We have a few here in New Hampshire.Although the lights are not embedded in the sign. They use a similar set up to a crossbuck light, only with yellow lenses and the advanced warning sign.
Butler, Ind, had one of these flashing RR crossing signs back in the 1980s and 1990s because the crossing ahead of it had several casualties....

Interesting. Like the fact of the advanced warning sigh having lights and bells for the blind curve. Also, quite interesting that the cab car has a Leslie RS3L, but then again, alot of Amtrak cars do have them for cases like these where there isn't a lead locomotive and, per FRA regs., they still need to warn of their approach.
@RerailMe14 жыл бұрын
Im not so worried about the sign but even more worried about the fact that the train is in "Push" configuration. If the front car derails for some reason, there is gonna be a big mess of twisted metal on the rails cause of that heavy locomotive.

While I've seen an advance warning sign like this, there is something similar at a Canadian National crossing along IN-130 in Valparaiso Indiana. I don't know hoiw long it's been in place, but it's been there for over 30 years. All it is is a single blinking yellow light. It only comes on when the lights & gates are activated at the actual crossing. The single blinking light is on a sharp corner with 55mph traffic to warn people of a RR crossing.
@rainman2916 жыл бұрын
that sign is just an advanced warning that the crossing signals are activated and that you need to prepare to stop....we have them here in my city about 500ft before you reach the crossing

Where I live in Woodstock, Ontario, Canada, we have one on each side of the tracks because at the bottom of the hill is the crossing and it serves as a heads-up that when the yellow lights flash, train is coming.
@StarFighters7613 жыл бұрын
Where I live, the city installed actual traffic lights at a railroad track (instead of the usual crossing lights). Infact each side has 3 lights (2 on the upper pole and 1 on the side pole) Rather stupid honestly, because crossing lights is just as good, and saves way more money mostly because this railroad track (and its route) is rarely used. And when I say rarely, I mean take a picture when it does happen.
@robertgift13 жыл бұрын
@MrAndyCarlos Carlos, do you have a sign 50 meters before the railroad crossing signals which indicates that a railroad crossing is ahead? In China, a triangle sign displaying a black steam locomotive drawing indicates that a railroad crossing is ahead.

@RerailMe NJ Transit does this on all their lines. For diesel lines, the locomotive always faces West (pushes INTO Hoboken, and pulls OUT of Hoboken). Some of the overhead catenary lines use the opposite configuration, but it's rare. Question for the video poster: what time was this taken? That speed, four cars, and a new PL42AC implies the Metro-North express, but I don't recall it using anything but Comet Vs for years now. Any idea which train this was?
