@@iain1541 Agreed. I love it too and always point out to others the fact that the bob-omb was had Reebok branded shoes for some reason. My dad and I's favorite scene was the police car chase when they shot the fire gun back and forth before blowing up. I honestly saw the beginning of this movie as a more well done rendition of how that movie started to an extent. There were a surprising amount of parallels between the two which after all these years were probably the parts Nintendo at the time approved and agreed with before it took the dystopian turn among other things.

The reason the Yoshi egg in the stinger was special was because it was green. The stampede that passed by in the travel montage had no green Yoshis in it. Also! Peach is never stated to have come from Brooklyn. Mario suggests it, but she immediately responds that there's a lot of other worlds out there. The live action movie actually has a fan-sequel webcomic that had creative input from one of the original movie's writers and is based on plans for the unproduced sequel and ideas that didn't make it into the final film. The comic hasn't been updated since 2015, but you'd probably have something to say about it.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who noticed that. None of the Yoshis we see in the brief scene on Yoshi’s Island had any Green Yoshis which may imply that Green Yoshis in this Mario movie continuity are extremely rare and that the main Green Yoshi character that we see in the games is the only one? I think they’re doing this to make our main Green Yoshi stand out from the rest of the Yoshis to emphasize that he’s one of the main characters.

In the 1993 movie, Daisy was the only princess whose name was established in the American releases at the time, and a lot of people weren't clear that she was even a separate person from Princess Toadstool. So they clearly figured the more normal name would be the one she'd grow up with in Brooklyn. A baby hatching out of an egg isn't a problem for Catholics theologically, we'd just acknowledge that she's either a different specie created by the same God _or_ speculate that someone encased a fully born baby inside of an egg somehow, for some reason.

While this is true, would have been nice if they did something else with him. Example, Bowser using him as a lure for Mario to get him in an ambush, then Luigi managing his own escape and is then reunited with his brother for the rest of the movie. It almost feels like the voice actor himself could not be around to play the role so they worked around that in the movie. Even in some of the prison scenes he was not even shown or had a limited amount of lines.

It could be possible that Peach didn't come from the sewers from her world. The travel point between the Mushroom Kingdom and where Mario and Luigi came from is vast. It's like a giant space in between and if you aren't careful you could end up where you aren't intending to go. So, maybe Peach got to the Mushroom Kingdom not through the same city or even world as Mario.

One thing I wish the movie would add for context: how did Bowser learn about Princess Peach’s existence? Fun as this movie is, this was one of the things that cause my brain to itch a bit throughout the film. We got a little bit of peach’s backstory/exposition, but never how they first met. Just a day after watching the new Mario movie, I watched the original live action one for the first time together with my girlfriend. And you know what? We had an absolute blast with it! Say about it what you will, how nonsensical it is, how difficult the plot is to grasp, how non-Mario it is, but it's difficult to argue that it ever gets boring. It's pretty much just this really wild ride from beginning to end, and I think that makes it a heckin' good time. Now back in 1993 when it was first released, watching it would have probably made me really angry and confused (I mean, if I hadn't been only one and a half years old then). However, now that an alternative Mario movie exists that's more legit, I think it's super fun to go back to the old one and just take it for what it is: A really enjoyable, albeit nonsensical flick. All of that being said, I think I'll always enjoy the new movie more than the original one, because ultimately, I'm still a Mario fan. I think it's impossible for any hardcore Mario fan to not get sort of emotional seeing all the love that went into the new movie, even despite its flaws. It feels like a movie that was made specifically for me, as though the entire movie was just a single long reference to my personal life, and that's something the original movie never even attempted to be.

While I agree that it sucks that Luigi kinda got the short end of the stick, I do like that they Damseled him for this movie, and didn't put Peach in imminent danger until after they had already established her relationship with Mario; it makes way more sense as a motivation for Mario, in this movie, to want to rescue his brother, since the conflict with Bowser kind of isn't his problem. This way, in the next movie, when the Koopalings show up to spring Bowser, he can grab Peach on his way out, and it'll make sense for Mario to go, "Oh no, my friend's in trouble! I gotta go help her!"

The Pokemon franchise is owned by the Pokémon Company, who produced this film alongside Legendary Pictures. While Nintendo does have partial ownership of the Pokémon Company, the company is still considered independent, and they produced the movie with very little or no involvement from Nintendo, so it’s kind of hard to call Detective Pikachu a Nintendo movie, unlike the Mario movie’s, which directly involve Nintendo to varying degrees.

This is the film that got me thinking that we might be taking films a bit too seriously nowadays. Was this film fun? Yeah. Did it successfully manage to kickstart a Nintendo film franchise? Absolutely. So…what else does it need to do? Sure it could be deeper, it could be better. But it did exactly what it set out to do. If I had fun, I had fun. If it wasn’t trying to be deeper than it was, I have no intention of looking deeper than it is. It doesn’t just erase the good films, and it doesn’t diminish the really well crafted animated films out there. It just happens to be a fun short time and nothing more. And I’m starting to think that we shouldn’t be asking for more.

loved this movie as i really loved that it actually mixes the 1993's elements(kinda felt like a reworking of parts of the original just without the boring & bad elements making it fit the games more, especially the finale actually happening in brooklyn instead of just a meme joke.). alongside having fun making a world of what we have of the games nowadays as well as fully embracing even the super show's origin, enjoyed the characters like mario(the voice worked in context but definitely needs work as i wouldn't be against his voice just going to charles.),luigi(liked charlie day as him and still cared about his relationship with mario as it was shown well enough/tbh had that issue more with tails in sonic movie 2 in regards to how he met the blue blur.),princess peach(loved her especially showing her protecting her kingdom instead of being pointlessly kidnapped until it made sense when it did and while i think a few moments of their beginning could've been changed love her interactions with mario/trusting toad.) ,bowser(loved jack black's direction for bowser as he's a boisterous villain and love they brought his love of peach as well.) ,toad(completely prefer this over the game voice/did find funny it also appeared at the end and hope we see toadette as it's the most i actually loved him.),dk(outside the laugh which was a bit on the nose liked it for donkey kong's character in country.),kamek(so weird it's gantu's voice actor as it felt different and always got more gruntilda if she talked from him.),cranky(do wish he went for a similar voice to the cartoon as he reminded me of bentley from sly cooper a bit too much at times.),foreman spike(hope in the sequel wario & waluigi work for him as i liked he gave the mario bros. a bit of respect for saving him cheering them.) and that nihilistic luma(with peach's origin in this/originally going to be her relative i really wonder if this version will be related to rosalina as it's clear she's going to be in the sequel, which seriously makes me wonder what she'll be like with how that luma was.). do wish the adventure was a bit longer(mostly the yoshi kingdom as it was weird mario meeting the yoshi's but not commentating on it or helping.) and would've loved a subplot for luigi trying to escape bowser's kingdom meeting e. gadd in the castle/princess daisy ruling the desert kingdom(would actually love a relationship like the original in a sequel.) but loved what they did for this movie being a comeback from the huge failure of 1993(alongside making me care for an illumination movie with how well nintendo reigned them in.) and weaving the game world greatly that i really want to see nintendo pictures make more films/cartoons/anime of their series(especially star fox/kid icarus with that reference that made me get a huge grin.:3) and go bigger for a sequel maybe connecting & leading to a super smash bros. series if they're introduced well.

The flaw was that it had Mario plastered on it, had it been literally anything else it might have been a good movie, it was just a bad mario movie... but I also dread rewatching to have those memories shattered. Yeah agreed with everything you said here too, suuure the live action is bad, but it had some solid moments that I remember, that I wish the animated had explored more... such as the world itself, and yeah more connections with the bros.

Since this movie came out I've heard people saying "This movie embraces the 90's Mario cartoon. Sonic should do the same thing!" The problem is I don't think it's that simple. Making the Mario Bros Italian-American plumbers from Brooklyn who get transported to the alternate world of the Mushroom Kingdom doesn't exactly alter anything within the game's continuity or story (since there isn't that much story anyway.) With Sonic, the whole idea that Sonic grew up in this secret village as a Freedom Fighter while Dr. Eggman.... sorry, "Robotnik" took over the world and ruled as a kind of "Robot Hitler", I honestly don't feel like that fits into the stories and canon of the games very well. Even when the Archie Comics tried to do adaptations of the game's stories, they had to mix it with their own canon and continuity and everything just became a bit of a convoluted mess. It's why I've always preferred the IDW series, because that really seems to keep the games in mind, and why I'd take characters like Tangle, Whisper and Dr. Starline appearing in the games over characters like Sally, Antoine and Snively any day of the week!

I feel that the lack of detail or character development is likely because of Nintendo putting their foot down on what to do and what not to do. They are VERY controlling of their licenses, and wish to play it safe, specially for a blockbuster movie. The movie was basically done like a Mario game. Not too much to think about, story is mostly the same, but the ride through it was fun.

Its not like the Game version were she was born in the Mushroom Kingdom, we know that her parents are King and Queen Toadstool. For Movie Peach to become a queen she’d have to marry a king or prince.

So, weirdly enough, I've actually got a nostalgic sweet spot for the live action Mario Bros, despite not being around when it first released. I happened upon it when my father figure of the day found it in like, a bargain bin or something when I was twelve, and regardless of the weirdness and lack of real Mario elements, I still really enjoyed the movie. Still do actually, so yeah.

I thought the new movie was fun to watch. I hope the sequel establishes more of the character relationships and include Wario Ware and Wario Land references. It would also be cool if they had John Leguizamo do a cameo role since I heard he was kind of disappointed he didn't get a role in the first one after growing to like the live action film in more recent years. It would be cool if John's character was related to Charles Martinet's Jump Man character since his design has some elements from Bob Hoskins depiction of Mario.

It was a good movie (it needed more dance offs between Bowser and Mario-😆) but in all seriousness, I wanted a small spinoff section with Luigi meeting Professor Egad and him trying to defeat King Boo and getting a look at Bowser's generals (i.e., King Bob-Bomb, Koopalings, etc.). Just my opinion.

While it sucks that you had the issue of being unable to seperate the VA's from their characters I, funnily enough, had a blast with all the VA's because I do not care about live action, so I cockishly pride myself on being "immune to star power", which means I didn't have that issue lol

20 years from now I predict we'll get a reboot of the original Mario movie. I hope they go all in with the gritty cyberpunk aesthetic, with proper counterparts to all the characters instead of "not-peach" and a real dinosaur fight scene, more velociraptor yoshi, more power-ups and so on.

I haven't watched the original (anime) Super Mario Bros. movie, but I did and still do like the second movie from 1993. 🙃 The new/third one was surprisingly good, anyway. It dodged some issues I'd expected it to stumble on, and I just had a good time with it.

I unironically love the 1993 Mario movie because it had such a charming innocence and sweetness to it. But I also unironically love the 2023 Mario movie as well. And while I love Sonic more than Mario, I still love Mario and I grew up with both Sonic AND Mario (although I grew up with Sonic more than Mario). And even though I loved the live-action Sonic movies, I have to admit that they were mid as fuck. I hope Sonic 3 will be pure kino, but in any case, I hope that the 2023 Mario movie makes a billion dollars at the box office because I want video-game movies to replace capeshit as the next big cinematic trend.

Despite this movie being a box office success, it's now clear that the voice acting in this movie is pretty divisive. It's clear that for some people who criticize the voices are the kind of Mario fans that don't want their precious/sacred things to be touched or messed with. I'll tell you this, if this movie had no celebrity cast and all the characters were accurately depicted as they were in the video games with little to no dialogue, this movie would've felt a lot shorter in my opinion. Almost like a half hour short film. The voices help the movie out for me. And obviously without it this movie wouldn't have been as successful as it already is so yeah.

I think the mario movie 2 is going to be the best opportunity to really get the characters less thin. In terms of acting, I think luigi, mario, and bowser were great, even as characters with not much going for them. Peach wasn't my favorite since she was basically just wildstyle from the lego movie, but besides that I think the characters could have more depth.

Overall, I really enjoyed the movie. And unlike Sonic 2, the wedding scene was enjoyable (Though, I was really hoping Peach took Toad's frying pan and went Super Mario RPG against the Koopas). Like the Sonic movies, I came into it expecting a good time and that's exactly what I got. I couldn't tell you what more the movie could have done, as I was satisfied in what it accomplished (Being accessible to anybody while also paying respect to fans of it's various franchises).

Overall I agree with your review. I thought the characters were fun and (mostly) well done, I enjoyed the references, and I loved the remixed mario music. I’m also pleasantly surprised to see the Ice Flower in this movie, even if it made peach just look like Elsa. (Also loved the supershow/movie reference of them being from Brooklyn) My problems are also mainly the same. The pacing was pretty fast in this movie. They should have added more scenes in between the action to show these characters bonding (like a scene in-between the cranky kong throne scene and the donkey Kong fight where Mario is readying for the fight when toad walks in to check on him and they bond more, because they barely talked to each other in this movie.) they could have very easily taken out one of the scenes from Brooklyn (*cough* The Dog *cough*) to add a side scene into the main part of the movie. My main problem was sadly the Kongs. While I don’t like how Donkey Kong literally just sounds like Seth Rogen, I think bigger issue is that he feels wrong. I literally forgot that was Donkey Kong until he started kicking ass with the fire flower. He acted more like how I imagine Diddy Kong would act. I’ve always imagined Donkey Kong acting similarly to Mighty from Archie Sonic. Lovable and caring, but has the power to punch down buildings, and will rock your world if you mess with his home, his friends, or his bananas. As for Cranky Kong, I think character wise he was fine. I just thought the voice acting for them sounded bad personally. Lastly, I hated the pop music. When the remixed Mario songs sounded so good, it made them feel even more out of place. I get it’s supposed to be nostalgia like “hey it’s 80 music because Mario is from the 80s” but it just felt tacked on, especially when the last song they play is A: not from the 80s, and B: in a guardians of the galaxy movie, which I feel was only put in because of the voice for Mario. I don’t know. Overall my review is that I enjoyed the movie, but I’m not sure if I liked it. Maybe I’ll rewatch it later to get a better idea of how I feel.

I expected Pratt to be TERRILE but he was instead barely passable. So, that's a plus? But I was surprised to learn martinet was Mario's father. He was a genuinely good voice actor. I thought he lost the part in the movie because he couldn't do lengthy dialogue as Mario and could only spit out brief one liners like "wahoo!". But he was great as Mario's dad - so why couldn't he play mario???

I did feel that Peach's voice didn't stand out. The actress was good, don't get me wrong. But, if we are comparing to iconic voices or tones? It felt like her voice was generic female. To me at least. Like, any other talented voice actress could have taken the role. I don't know personally why they chose her, or her past work, but she did the role well.

Spoilers I guess: Couldn't agree more with the Bowser-Jack Black dissonance. It worked great at first, but as soon as he started singing about Peaches, he stopped being Bowser and became Tenacious D and shattered any disbelief I was hanging onto. Side note: I was VERY glad to see both Mario and Luigi grab that power star at the end. Seeing Luigi share the climax with Mario was 🤌
