I live in Alaska. I'm seeing comments saying "Why would anyone want to live there." Please don't say that. There are lots of other towns above and under the Arctic Circle too. You have to realize that living there is a way of life, (hunting, fishing, whaling, etc). I know this because I know some people who live in Barrow and also I'm Yupi'k, which is one of many cultures here in Alaska. Living up here isn't always cold and dark, that happens in the winter time. Plus its beautiful. Even in the city!

The people calling it depressing are pre-depressed millennials looking for a platform to rationalize their depression, so oftentimes on Reddit and KZbin, you'll see people calling things which are simply mundane/uninteresting, "depressing," but it's frankly more revealing about them than anything else.

Mantana Jansi just having a government is not good enough for a state to survive on its own. It needs an economy, most of the states receive federal funding to help rebuild roads and fund education. California however, would probably do the best on its own since its economy is about as big as France's. Then there is also military defense, every state would have no way to defend itself from other countries. It'll just be one giant disaster.

Barrow is cold but not particularily cloudy (especially given the latitude). Its sunshine hours is around 1800 per year which is very decent for a place in the high arctic. It's actually more than London, UK, Lima, Peru or San Sebastian, Spain - all of which have very mild climates.

A couple points to make. 1) There is a road. You drive from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay, on the Dalton Highway, From there, It's called the Community Winter Access Trail (CWAT) and you can only use it during the winter. Convoys of cars drive from Prudhoe Bay to Utqiagvik, but you are required to get approval to use it. 2) It's not really dark in the winter. The sun never fully rises, but there is some light on the horizon, and the tundra is covered in white snow that makes it easy to see. Either the city lights bounce off low clouds and illuminate town, or the moon does it. 3) Utqiagvik is the new official name. Many locals still prefer the old name. 4) You can see polar bears, snowy owls, arctic fox in and around town. It has some of the best birding in North America!

Oddly enough, the area around Anchorage, where most of the people (including me) in Alaska live, winters are milder and less cold (on average) than Minnesota. This is because the pacific ocean moderates the temperature all year. Plus we have the huge Alaska Range a couple hundred miles north, with the tallest mountain in North America, blocking all that really cold interior stuff and keeping the moderate weather on our side. We've even had a strange heat wave this year, where it's reached above 90 deg F several times. Of course this video is about Barrow, and it's all true. Just keep in mind that only a tiny fraction of the state lives there, and the distance between us is like driving from Atlanta to New York.
