As someone who used anonymous mode purely for peace of mind, this hurts. I tend to use the same username a lot of places, and I've been harassed for it in the past. My Steam name was the same as my Switch Online name? Oh freaking boy, you better believe that someone who got butthurt that I was playing the game instead of having a "Squid Party" (gamethrowers who just spam emotes and the form change button instead of playing) in Splatoon found me and forced me to set my profile and messages to friends only because how dare I ruin their fun by not joining the gamethrow, am I right? Games are supposed to be fun. But any game with any kind of PVP element will see people taking things too seriously. I, myself, use the "TIs post now or you'll be reported for gamethrowing; hang all late claimers because they're evil or gamethrowing" strategy to bait as Veteran, which is aggressive and could potentially make some people feel pretty bad if they have anxiety issues and are afraid to say anything (but obviously working to overcome them if they're playing a game like ToS! I speak from personal experience.) Nobody's perfect. People make mistakes. And people get upset about those mistakes. Not just the people who made them, but the people who suffered as a result of them. It can get way too easy to get annoyed at one specific player, like "how could they do that" and just try to eliminate them early whenever you see them just to get them out of the way so "they stop sabotaging your games." (My own pet peeve, if it wasn't obvious, was TIs who refuse to post. I almost started keeping a list of players I saw doing that before I realized I was going too far for a game and stopped. For all I know they could have been new players!) So yeah, I really hope they bring back Anonymous mode. I do think that the potential abuses are less of a problem than what Anonymous mode prevents, even before getting into streamers and Reghunting.

very well said. i myself am unfortunately someone with pretty bad social anxiety (i’m working on it!! baby steps, haha), and social or pvp games, especially ones where people can get kinda intense (i’ve definitely seen people freak out!), become downright unplayable for folks such as myself without anonymous mode. people can become very harsh and do stupid things online, but measures like anonymous mode create a layer of safety. i really do hope they bring it back, and improved. so far the devs seem to be good people, so i’m certain they’ll listen to these gripes soon, especially since it so badly effects their most loyal players (ie; regulars).

This is also way more apparent in Ranked/Ranked Practice. I rarely use Anonymous mode, but i do understand the reason that mode exists. I often goof around in RP but i can play seriously when needed, and when i start playing good in lobbies, people started to recognize my tendency to use certain names coupled with my character. Soon, you'll realize that Coven want you out if you're not in their team, Town will sus you out if you're not dead n1, TIs will all go on you n1, and TPs want you alive if you're not coven. I don't mind dying n1, which means i can just kick back and relax at times. But i hate it when evils started keeping me alive and hold the game hostage when i'm a role that can't do anything during the endgame like a TI, simply because they want me out of the lobby since "i played too good compared to the others". I still rarely use Anonymous mode, simply because i meet the same people often times, and just goof around doing stupid roleplay with names and stuff, but when the reghunters started popping in, i usually just dip. Haven't played the game for the past 3 weeks since i'm busy irl, so i think nobody really remembers a random Jackie with an all Pumpkin themed decoration. I'd just like to add to this, as I am seeing a lot of community backlash about the anonymous mode change that there have been many solutiouns being discussed between content creators and devs on discord, and some of those are really promising. I get that everyone is upset about a useful feature being gone, but eventually its just a step taken by BMG in order to implement a better solution to replace it. I do not know when we will see a change on the situation, but it is confirmed that this will not be the last change. Some solutions which have been discussed so far include; 1. A Block system so that if a user streamsnipes/reghunts you, you can just prevent yourself from being in the same lobby with them. This can also be used by the average playerbase to avoid gamethrowers and other people. 2. Giving everyone anonymous mode in the pre-game lobby, and only having chosen names after the game begins. 3. Allowing players to enter the lobby with a nickname. Remember, if all else fails BMG can still revert back to anon mode within a few minutes if they wish to do so. If you guys do have ideas on how you think this problem can be fixed, you can add them as a reply to this comment.

@Mr60Gold Жыл бұрын
A damn shame. I hope you and other youtubers will be able to enjoy TOS2 again soon enough with better changes happening as soon as possible. A potential solution that could work would be to make anonymous mode assign a randomly generated username instead, one that could feasibly pass as a player username, making it seem like just any other player (that way stream snipers and people hunting for players would no longer be able to just limit their search to the people that look to be in anonymous mode). As another comment I seen suggested, having your real name only appear when you accept the friend request would also be a good call to avoid that exploit from happening again. Lastly there is the option of adding customization options when the match begins. It could be limited to only your skin, house, path and outer decorations. Then just have the building order be randomized and now there would be almost no way to figure out which one is the person they want to target as for all they know, they could've changed everything about their character (This obviously comes with the drawback of having to increase the waiting time when people are choosing their names but comes with the side benefit of allowing more customization during games and to sell the deal, if they removed the 1 skin cap (only 1 werewolf player, etc) then there truly would be no way to deduce who is who) Personally these are all the things that came to mind for me, I think the third option might be the most effective for this but it would also likely be the most work to implement. Once again, best of luck to the youtubers for suggesting stuff to the dev team about this.

I found every aspect of this video to be true and very accurate. I am a non-youtuber on the old version that hasn't played in a long time, but I started having multiple people trying to name themselves after me or a different veriation of it and would continuously bother me through the game. I even left a randomized pre-game lobby only to end up randomly going into the same one, but without the person doing it there. They clearly are responding to me being present and I have no idea why. So, even though I haven't played the new one, I understand that being recognized and targeted for it is not fun.

I don't know about all ToS youtubers, but I've always been put off the point of anon mode when someone seemingly always picks out someone like Pipetron (And I may've done it myself before). And honestly, some players will really target you for protection or killing even based off your temporary lobby name. I know I've had a LOT of both of those when my temp name was an anime femboy, for instance. Of course, even with that said, I don't really think they should have streamer mode/incog either. Although I do not personally feel pressured, you bring up good points about many players worrying about their public image/people yelling or complaining. And at the end of the day, if it's implemented well, streamer modes should never hurt to implement. If there hadn't been the friend request workaround, there would've been very few potential issues.
@NunnyNugget Жыл бұрын
Hi adagia - this video definitely is covering an important topic. However I think there is an important side to this which wasn't fully adressed, being the issue of people abusing this mechanic in games to evade bans and cause issues. You did bring up part of it in people reghunting using it using the exploit, however it was also sadly used quite frequently by some nasty people to sneak into lobbies despite being blacklisted, and even without the friend exploit it was still often used. The thing is as well not everybody wants to be in anonymous mode either, but due to the prevelance of this issue it began to seriously cause some problems which is why there was a lot of backlash to the feature, and its ultimate removal as of right now. I think there definitely needs to be a middleground, but it was sadly causing some pretty major issues and it couldn't be left as it was!! :(
@spockamania Жыл бұрын
That sounds like a dev issue? There is no reason you shouldn't be able to report an anon and for it to stick. Reports should always go to player id, not whatever their screen name is in a specific game. And player id is not something that would have to be given to the person filing the report. Moreover, since it's a paid for game only on Steam, that should address 99% of issues; there are tools to ban entire accounts from accessing your game. Even if you are concerned with someone creating a new Steam account and buying a new copy of the game to bypass an account ban, Steam gives tools to developers that are more extreme; IP or hardware bans. You don't need to find a middleground when you can have your cake and eat it, too! That's just giving devs a pass to take the easy route. That said, I don't know ToS2 as well; I didn't know there wasn't a non-anon mode. That is kind of a disappointment. That might need some middle ground considerations as I know I personally like usernames/custom names!
@NunnyNugget Жыл бұрын
@@spockamania keep in mind the devs are only a small team! Especially when it comes to deep rooted situations with ambiguity, for example a bad player who joined a streamer’s lobby with malicious intent on anon mode (like intentionally reg hunting players in the lobby), it begins to cause issues when players in the lobby do not know who is really there, and basically have to guess if they should file a report or not. The developers then are basically required to pick up on whether it seemed intentional or not and… it gets messy incredibly quickly. This isn’t just a hypothetical either, this is sadly an incredibly common issue caused by Anon mode. Although it is good for people to be able to hide their identity from bad players, issues arrive when bad players can hide their identity from others is the main problem. And like you said, people should be allowed to play the game! It’s not fair for people to be forced into a chain reaction of playing anon mode because there are bad people in public lobbies who will hunt players they don’t like. Essentially there really isn’t an easy route to this!
@spockamania Жыл бұрын
@@NunnyNugget I feel like there were already solutions in the first one to this sort of issue. That said, I do think there are "easy" solutions (just let people choose their display name each match, have a streamer mode that hides their/all players names, give moderators access to see steam names overtop anon replacements, etc all seem super valid to me with only some tweaking to make practical). There just aren't quick/low effort fixes for the devs (and probably not fun/flashy things to work on). ToS2 came out how many months ago? I know it's not an instant solution sort of thing, but they've had some time to think about this since release (and post release bug fixes), so I'd have hoped more movement in their resolution idea by now than just open communication with streamers after turning a feature off with very little to the community directly that also uses it. But that's just me. I've just seen a lot of really shitty devs over the years and am just pessimistic despite these ones showing they're not malicious at the very least. I apologize for being overly negative and do genuinely hope a resolution is come to in a reasonable time!

People can be downright brutal when it comes to things like misplays, and they definitely hold grudges in basically every other game. WoW guilds, Runescape clans, Guild Wars groups, hell even New World companies all earn reputation that make playing the game much different than being a solo, even if you're a "nobody" in those groups. In a game where there's ~ 500-700 average players online, it gets rather easy to recognize the players who are on during your normal playtime. As you said, targeting of specific players, lobby dodging, and general toxicity is definitely going to increase imo. Best of luck to all ToS2 YT'ers.

I sometimes use it when we stack the lobby with premades though, since ik they won’t target me intentionally and we have a rule about using RNG N1, Pipe’s one of those people and since we’ve been playing together for years, we know quite a bit about each other’s playstyle haha. Appreciate the compliment

Pardon my ignorance, haven't touched ToS since ages before 2 came out, but how is it possible to target people between games if they can only see the name you have set for the current match?
@lorathian Жыл бұрын
You can see the real username between rounds For ToS1, it would be the pre-game queue. For ToS2, there’s a pre-game lobby where everyone just kinda wanders around and checks out each others houses. And before the fixed the Anon Mode exploit, you could see the real username on your side of the friend request that shows it’s pending
@qberrygamz7049 Жыл бұрын
So wait the bug was that they could send friend request mid game. Then they fix the bug and remove the thing. Why so why not just put it back. I'm not a youtuber and i usually use the same name each game. But If anonymous mode worked well but had a few bugs. Why remove it all together instead of just Patching the bugs. So for the Instance of sending friend request mid game. Make it so friend request can only be sent in lobby not the game itself. If you want to send a specific player a friend request the last match screen exist for a reason. Or jsut remove anonymous modes friend request. SO say a player sends a friend request to a player in anonymous mode. They instead receive a message along the line of the player has their account se to anonymous. Sorta like private accoutns. for other games.

I'm sorry, but this has been the only non-cosmetic or slight bug fix change for a while. Trickster is still Trickster. How many shorts of pipton sarcastically dissing the role is it gonna take? Coroner and Investigator are currently underperforming in their alignment while Seer is making Brawl Meta Knight look balanced. Dreamweaver is kind of mid. Prosecutor could honestly use changes as it seems to be a worse version of both Mayor and Deputy. Even for changes I don't agree with, like bringing Mafia back or buffing Enchanter/Illusionist or even something as stupid as removing Deputy because "it's easy to throw with" would be content changes. But like... maybe they said something idk about like 'they don't want to do any content changes in the middle of a ranked season', which I don't really entirely get. But the lack of actual changes to roles is bothering me. It feels like "Yeah we could fix Trickster, but take this."

Gonna weigh my hot take here and say it feels like it feels harmful to the community as a whole to remove anon mode to benefit a subset of a subset of users
@cheskitten7097 Жыл бұрын
Honestly I'm not sure who this change is even intended to benefit. From my perspective it seems like the only people who are going to be helped by this are the people who were discouraged from the negative behavior it was in place to deter because they saw the friend request glitch as too much effort or didn't know about it. This will also make it easier for those that actually went through the trouble of using the glitch because even though it has been patched they don't need it anymore. 0/10 change all around since it removes protection for not just content creators but also the new players, anxious players, experienced players, and anyone else who just wants to play without people bothering them because they're good/bad at the game.

I'm sorry but this video is incredibly dissappointing to see coming from you. You KNOW why they had to remove it, there was such a huge moderation issue going on and BMG's hand was forced. You KNOW this, and this video is not only incredibly misleading, but also mean to the developers and putting them in an unfairly bad light to your audience who obviously doesn't know the full situation. I wanted to wait before writing this comment to see, but of course people don't have the full picture and when you basically create a video rallying people to harass the developers into making a change, that's going to happen. I know you didn't directly say it in the video but it is your responsibility to control the information people have and the tone you use which will influence how people perceive this situation. I have seen plenty of comments bashing BMG because they don't know the full situation and this video is obviously leaving out some important details. Becauses of the Anon mode situation the developers had to make a quick and drastic change, but you KNOW they have been trying to find a solution, and you rushed this video out purposefully obscuring this information. If you really wanted it back, you should've made a more constructive video discussing with the community for feedback, and if you knew this is something you weren't allowed to make you SHOULD NOT HAVE MADE THIS VIDEO. It is causing unnecessary drama and hate against the developers which is mostly misinformed. You are responsible for what information you spread, and this video is genuinely so dissappointing to see coming from you. There is no need to spark drama on a situation, that you know the wider community doesn't fully know about, and I know this video is not made in good faith because the description is very telling that this video was basically quickly made as a response to the temporary change the developers were forced to make.

“BMG’s hand were forced” what, by the 4 people complaining about being harassed and reghunted? Give me a break lol. In no world is it not a shitty decision to remove the feature that does more good than harm for the entire community just because a niche group of people were being targeted by it. The fix was to remove the friend request exploit. They did that, then removed it anyways. Incredibly stupid decision.
@proxz14 Жыл бұрын
Finally, a sensible comment lol. The information left out has been mentioned by me in one of the higher-up comments in this video for people to see the full picture and make their own decision with unbiased information, but eh there is only so much you can do if someone who feeds off of the game you've created wants to rally people into bashing your efforts just because they disagree with you on a certain aspect of it, its sad to see.

You still see what position they were, their role, and who all was in the lobby unless you black out literally everything: chat, your role card, the player list, the graveyard, etc As you can imagine, this is not an actual solution

I feel like the other side was not recognized whatsoever. The problem is that non-content creators are using it for evil to target others who stream and don't stream. Yes, it helps youtubers to maybe not sway a game *MAYBE* , BUT it hurts ALL streamers with specific groups targeting streamers. I think instead of becoming enraged about this and complaining, it would've been better to come up with solutions that can help the devs and having an actual conversation which is not what you did here. I hope that everyone can get what they want in the end.
@DefNotDoom Жыл бұрын
I feel like it’s maybe a bit drastic to remove the feature for the ENTIRE community because a subset of a subset of people were being affected by it. The pros of anon mode existing far outweigh the cons. You literally can’t balance the game around streaming and stream sniping. No game has tried to do this, except with the existence of anon mode and queue delay.
@flightyavian Жыл бұрын
Tbh I don't get what the issue here is- as long as reports go through regardless if the player is anon or not, I don't see how anon mode helps trolls do anything specific.

as annoying as the change is, changing steam nick frequently is a common practice to avoid stream sniping across many games, i dont think this is that deep.
