Jedi fighters were designed with jedis in mind, fast, aggile little fighters were they could use the force better to support their flying, and these ships were used more to get around and defend a planet than to ambush, and if an ambush was needed they had the pre star destroyer to deliver the smaller ships when needed, and even then it was pretty much only the jedi ships that needed that hyperdrive ring
@skatepunk4853 Жыл бұрын
@@redpuffey7798 In military terms, Interceptors are light aircraft used to shoot down enemy aircraft before they can complete their mission (namely, bombing the carrier of base the interceptors are launched from). Fighters, meanwhile, are more balanced aircraft designed to fly further distances in order to attack enemy targets (and defend bombers from interceptors while THEY bomb the enemy's carriers and bases). "Jedi Starfighters" were just a nickname, the Delta-7's were designed with a different role than the X-Wings. The Delta's were intended to launch from Venators, and then return when they were done without going too far. When we see them being used beyond that (eg, Obi-Wan going to Geonosis), they're being used outside the norm, which is why they need external addons to do so.

something you may find interesting is the episode 2 jedi starfighter and the episode 3 starfighters were the predecessors to the tie fighter model starfighters and the tie fighters also did not have hyper drives and you can even see the episode 3 starfighters had the same window design in the front of the cockpit that the tie fighters later had and instead of hyperdrive mounting rigs they had small hyperdrive transport ships used to take tie fighters across the galaxy.
@ignazioacerenza9881 Жыл бұрын
The hyperspace ring is in fact not because technology advanced in the 15 year span between trilogies (tech is pretty stagnant in the star wars universe tbh) but rather it's because Lucas is grounding the starfighter design and adding limitations to what they can do. He's basically saying Jedi Starfighters are designed to make the best use of the force and so they need to be faster, nimbler and lighter than regular ships. And so the hyperspace portion of the ship is outsourced to these rings. Other than that I agree with mostly everything in the video. Lucas always took us somewhere new. That energy is missing from the sequels.
@Beethoven8335 Жыл бұрын

@@Beethoven8335 Read and weep: "Manufactured by Kuat Systems Engineering, the Delta-7 Aethersprite-class light interceptor was a Jedi-used starfighter that saw extensive action during the last years of the Galactic Republic, and was designed specifically with the Jedi in mind. The Delta-7's designers worked with the Jedi Order to create a starfighter with fewer internal systems than other starships, and focused on making the controls as responsive as possible due to the Jedi's Force-sensitive capabilities." The reason the drive is outsourced to the ring is so that pilots that have lightning fast reflexes can make actual use of those reflexes. A fast ship with minimal components will handle better. Another argument that completely blows your idea out of the water is that internal hyperspace was already available in the clone wars. Y wings are old clone war era ships that have had their armor plating removed for better maintenance. So hush.
@ironninja259 Жыл бұрын
@@Beethoven8335 No, he's right. Many small ships in the prequel era did have hyperdrives (ARC 170, Mandalorian Gauntlet). Many fighters during the Original Trilogy era didn't have hyperdrives (Most TIE models). The reason for the lack of hyperdrives on these ships is that hyperdrives are heavy and aren't required for the role they are designed for. Most ships without hyperdrives have carrier ships or are mainly used for defence and are designed to be nimble and operate within a fleet. Most ships with hyperdrives are designed to operate independently, without a carrier ship, either for hit-and-run attacks or long-range recon.

A place where having speeders is just not safe enough for troopers (they get shot and killed a lot), so they get modified to be threaded and heavier in order to acomodate a small portable shield to increase survival (clone comandos already had personal shields) while keeping the speed with a combination of antri-grav and thrusters, thus making more sense as to why they have a flying trooper (for more agile targets or extreme terrain while the vehicle provides support). Imagine that, Rey and company shooting and the troopers just for their blaser to do nothing, Finn (actually being an ex-trooper knowing all the basic military tech and not a bumbling fool) going like "Stop, theres no use! those have shields, we need something bigger to damage them!" then someone else being like "lets use the terrain to our advantage" . Honestly, I disagree with Kylo's lightsaber being a win. Sure it might be cool to look at, but as soon as you start thinking about it, that seems like a very risky weapon to wield even by the standards of a lightsaber. The main thing that makes that lightsaber utterly stupid is the crossguard: normal crossguards are supposed to protect you from an enemy's blade, but this one feels more like it's going to burn a hole in your wrist if you aren't extremely careful. And the crossguard doesn't even protect the lightsaber chassis - there's still an exposed bit that an opposing lightsaber can easily cut through and destroy yours entirely. It feels like if they really wanted to make a crossguard lightsaber, there are other ways of doing it. One that comes to mind is to fashion the crossguard out of a lightsaber-resistant material (like Cortosis from the Jedi Knight games) and attach it to the lightsaber hilt. Plus, that lightsaber-resistant mineral is extremely rare, so it would make sense why you'd only see one lightsaber of this type. The lit-up-crossguard saber feels like another instance where Disney didn't even know what they were doing.

The Resurgent is a good continuation of the ISD. It's visibly a Star Destroyer, but it has a very unique look with the negative space and it visually addresses one of the big flaws of the ISD: the overexposed bridge tower. The bridge of the ISD is flat and squat, which means that there won't be a repeat of the Exectuor incident. It's a simple way of showing how the First Order has taken its ship design to the next level and addressed the mistakes of the past. The AT-M6's bulkier legs also give an impression of strength opposite to the skinny legs of the AT-AT, although I personally would have included a scene where the Resistance tries the old cable trick and the M6 just breaks it with sheer force to demonstrate this to the audience.

Great video! Something you didn’t mention but I feel is along the same lines of technology not advancing or even regressing in the sequels is Luke’s prosthetic. In empire strikes back his robotic hand is hyper realistic so much so it looks exactly like a real hand. This was probably due to real life limitations in technology and funds but it works for the sci fi aesthetic. Then in attack of the clones anakin’s hand is much more mechanical and robotic. They probably had more money and technology and wanted to demonstrate that they could make a realistic prosthetic. But it still works with the lore because it takes place many years before like gets his prosthetic so it makes sense that the prosthetic isn’t as advanced or realistic. Then in the last Jedi Luke’s prosthetic again looks very robotic and not at all like a real hand. Esb takes place decades prior and at the time his prosthetic was built they were rebels on the run with limited resources. But the prosthetic still looks better and more realistic than the one in the last Jedi. What happened? Why does he have a different prosthetic anyway and why does it look worse than his old one? Technology should’ve advanced plus luke had won the war against the war so he should have had plenty of resources to get another advanced prosthetic.

It is perfectly reasonable for the technology to be the same or even worse in 30 years. First of all, the tech level in SW universe is generally stagnant: we kinda see little to no advancements since the Old Republic time, which was like a 1000 years ago. So probably they decided it's not worth it to innovate or hit some hard limit. Second, the last trilogy takes place after two major cataclysms and reconfigurations of the galaxy: first the Clone Wars and Republic->Empire transition, then the fall of the Empire. We don't actually know the state in which the galaxy was after these, but it's not far fetched to assume that some tech was lost, forgotten or just went out of use. It takes time to rebuild. Look at the real history examples: after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, tech level dropped significantly. People forgot how to build certain things (like dams in Po valley) or just stopped building them for some reasons: cost, availability of materials, lack of skilled workers or lack of demand. There could easily be something similar here. Concerning different worlds: well, the world where Luke lived felt pretty unique. Also I disagree the the casino planet is "another Naboo". Don't get me wrong, the new trilogy is terrible, the worldbuilding is awful, the casino planet feels like a side quest hardly connected to the story at all. But not for the reasons discussed in the video.

I'd like to mention the Delta, as a jedi starfighter it is made as light as possible, they had rings because it was a pretty good way to boost power outside of combat, which is the only time jedi really need to hit it into hyperspace, however even in the time of the OT many ships didn't have hyperdrives, like no Ties had anything except sublight engines, and the rebellion with its hit and run tactics placed a high reliance on being able to get starfighters out of a situation quickly, so most of them had hyperdrives, but even then the A wing didn't have them, this is because technology while it did advance between prequel to original didn't advance that much, and in some ways regressed though how much is simply due to technology limitations IRL is hard to say, but ultimately while things are better its marginal and there's no short list of equipment with old tech that works better then the new equipment, but was shelved because of the fighting the last war syndrome, where those would be very powerful weapons

Any technology regression could be "blamed" on the Rebellion's relative lack of resources, and the Empire being "careless". Either of those would make it a lot easier for their pilots to decide to rebel or escape.

Did X-Wings have hyperdrive? I don't remember, but it wouldn't make sense that they would as they weren't really made for long voyages. I don't know why any short-range ship would have hyperdrive. Each new world introduced by Lucas had it's own personality and style. You could look at pictures or hear descriptions and immediately know what planet it is. Those were reinforced by unique landscapes, species, architecture, ships, etc. and explored even deeper in related media (video games, novels, comics, etc) The sequel movies have nothing memorable about the new locations, they are either based off of existing ideas or generic sci-fi world with nothing memorable about it. Probably the only world with something unique was that one that had the red dirt under the surface. No imagination or creativity. And that applies to other Disney made Star Wars locales as well.

You are absolutly right about the planets. What disgust me is: they have no excuse about this lack of imagination. The original trilogy came out when we couldn't prove the existence of a single exoplanet. Not one! When the prelogy came out, exoplanets were officially discovered for a few years already, and it was stunning! There was already some kind of planets we never thought of: hot jupiters and weird, small nepttunes. But when the disneylogy came out, exoplanets wasn't a new thing anymore. It was a booming research field, hundreds of new astrophysicists already got their PhD by studying exoplanets, they were detected by dozens using new instruments all over the world and new space telescopes were launched, explicitely dedicated to exoplanet detection. We had news of so many incredible things: carbonic planets, dead planets, gas giants where it can rain melted glass sideway in huge hurricanes... So many visuals to create, so many possibilities... And all they did was recasting a sand planet, a forest planet (because hey: it's cheaper to find a forest), and they change the frozen planet to a salt planet (biggest effort)... And it was a Disney super-producion: they had the budget, probably the highest available for science-fiction at this moment, and they lacked guidance and imagination, when they had every ressource available...

In the sequels, every time when things looked bad, the resistance would save the day. But in the originals, han and leia were pretty much the best of the best. The ONLY hope of the rebels, and when things were scary, they saved the day. Not yoda, not the resistance, not a whole new fleet, them.

Yeah, that's what made each trilogy interesting. If the Prequel Trilogy had been a normal good guys vs bad guys trilogy, then yes, the fact that there were 10,000 other Jedi that they could call for backup, and thousands of other planets with armies that they could contact if needed, like the Mandalorians, Gungans, Wookies, Mon Cala, etc. (And of course the clones after Episode II) The Prequels were different, though, the whole reason for the movies' existence was to show the downfall of the Republic. If it was just the Republic and the Jedi vs the Trade Federation, or the Separatists, or something else, it would be too easy and boring, yes. But that was never going to happen, because Palpatine was tearing apart the Republic from the inside.

I think the justification for the tread-speeders was that they weren't susceptible to their repulsorlifts being jammed...which...then why didn't we ever see one actually being jammed? That chase would have been perfect to demonstrate repulsorlift jamming, but instead the only time it even gets mentioned is a one-off scene later that is used to "shock" people that they were using horses instead of speeders.

The main problem with the sequels IMO isn't really the lack of different planets or tech. I think we can all agree that The Clone Wars was amazing and the only super different worlds and tech I remember were the Malevolence's Ion Cannon and the crystal planet Christophsis. What made the sequels bad is that it told a story no one cared about. We like the prequels because it tells the story of Darth Vader, a story that was severely lacking in the original trilogy. We like the Clone Wars because it tells stories we are curious about with regards to things like anyone figuring out about Order 66 before it happened or how the Clones were trained. Similarly, series' like The Mandalorian are liked because they directly answer questions about what happened directly after the Empire fell. The sequels had none of this going for them. They were from the outset telling a story that no one could possibly care about because Rey was never a character in any lore up until the release of The Force Awakens. The story takes place so far after the fall of the Empire that no one is invested because there was no buildup, it would be like dropping someone in the middle of the Siege of Geonosis arc after watching only The Phantom Menace and expecting they would like it. We don't like the sequels because they have no importance to they story we love.

With the hyperspace rings, the idea behind the Jedi fighter is that it's super manoeuvrable to allow Jedi to leverage their force enhanced reflexes. To make this happen, everything was stripped out including the hyperdrive, making the craft a single purpose fighter. But that still lends to your argument, everything done pre Disney, had meaning and world building behind it.

One thing that really divides the sequel and prequel trilogies, to me at least, is the ships involved. In the prequels we got several new ships from as big as the Lucrehulk which in the lore was a modified freighter to the Actis series which were light, purpose-built Jedi starfighters that would precede the TIE series, and in the third movie specifically we got the ARC-170, the Tri-droid, the Munificent Class, the Recusant Class, the Providence Class, and the Venator Class. Every ship listed would go on to either influence later ships used in the Galactic Civil War or were modified for combat use from everyday business use. In the sequels we got newer X wings, newer A wings, new TIE fighters, that's just for the fighter records. Luckily for capital ships we got a few new designs from the Resurgent Class (a personal favorite) to the Virgillia Class, to whatever the was, the most unfortunate thing about the sequels was the fact that almost everything felt like a reskin, the setting had huge potential for new designs and looks but they just didn't capitalize on it.

There is one advancement in tech I can think of which is the ability for the deathstar laser to be made small enough to fit on destroyers but any improvement to the tech is mitigated by the fact all the ships need to be flewn together from this idea which I saw in some old republic comic where the Mandalorians (it was set in the Mandalorian war that took place before Revan's sith empire) use it to destroy the planet coresaunt by taking it over. Its in a graphic novel which included the girl who gets frozen in time with the amulet responsible for the racnos plague. A great read I might find it just to remind myself what good star Wars world building is like. (sorry for any Sci-fi words misspelled I have no clue how to spell them as well they aren't words in a sense so auto corect is a bit annoying but if you know you should be able to guess.)

I like your video but in the original trilogy in the first movie a new hope Han said a line somthing like (they will not be able to follow us into hyperdrive) when saying this he was talking about the TIE fighters who don't have a hyperdrive like the X-Wing ships who have 4 big thrusters and the entire back of the ship is were the hyperdrive is R2-D2 is essentially plugged to the X-wings hyperdrive. TIE fighters, jedi fighters and vulture droids did not have hyperdrives because there was no place to actually put it. Just to give you an example of how large hyperdrive engines are on the millennium falcon the entire back of the ship has no storage just engine almost half of the frigate is simply room for the 2 seperate hyperdrives in the ship along with the engine.

I only have two arguments against. Tech advancement has never really been that big of a thing in Star Wars. Even in the pre-disney suff. Sure sometimes there's a dark age, but tech overall stays pretty stagnant just with something being super crazy when it's first introduced but otherwise normal and quickly put in that spot after a few new movies/shows especially if a less important or worse, an expendable character is put in the cockpit. Like the Jedi Starfighters were super stripped down even with many safety features missing, one could argue they were the motorcycles of space fighters, and the hyperdrive system would of just added weight and made the ship bulkier, which is proven by the Naboo fighters which are of similiar size but were hyperdrive capable. And to play the devil's advocate about the resistance bomber. They could have used anything else as a bomber, ANYTHING, plenty of ships in all of starwars lore that could fit the role or be modded to do it the same way but been more capable of evasion and taking hits, at the very least avoiding turbolaser fire which is what the Y-wing was good for. Now the thing about the Resistance was that they had almost no fiscal support as compared to the Rebel Allaince. The fact they had the latest X-wings and what hardware they had was extremely impressive in it's own right and whatever Y-wings were left were probably in such disrepair it wouldn't be worth it at any scale the resistance or any half decent militia would need to work at and whatever had replaced the Y-wing on the galactic stage if any were probably prohibitively expensive or the Republic was not allowing them to the resistance. So, for some of their war machines to be garbage is acceptable but was still the dumbest bombing run ever conceived, with the dumbest ship, for the worst use. If anything I would of used bombers like that on a target that had minimal air/space defense and I'm just trying to get that last bunker to go away or surrender. Hell, I'm sure they were slower than Flying Fortresses. Anyway sorry for the rant on a year old vid.

Sorry, disagree about the world-building in the Prequel trilogy. Lucas did a good job in many aspects, but he himself decided to rehash characters from the OT into the PT. Seriously, why did R2-D2 have to be Padme's astromech? Why was Anakin Skywalker the creator of C3-PO? Why was Chewbacca one of the Wookiees to help Yoda escape? There's that famous Lucas quote about "poetry" and "rhyming," but for a lot of us older viewers, that was just lazily taking characters from the OT "present" and putting them into the past for who knows what's sake. If Disney had done it, we would all be arguing (correctly) that they were just using recognizable characters for nostalgia-baiting and robbing us of real world-building. A lot of writers are bad at writing prequels. They insist upon clumsily inserting legacy characters into the past because they are too hesitant to create new characters from scratch. EDIT: Also, I forgot to mention making Anakin Skywalker from Tatooine was also a missed opportunity for world-building. The novelizations of the OT made it that Owen Lars and Obi-Wan were the ones who were related, not Owen and Anakin, so if Lucas went with that precedent (I understand he didn't have to) then he could've made Anakin from any planet in the galaxy. Instead, Lucas went with the "safe" route of bringing audiences back to a planet they've already been to twice. But Lucas picked rhyming over world-building so father and son were from the same planet.

The prequels actually work and the sequels don’t. Here’s how: - despite some clunky dialogue, the memes are pretty funny, and the sequel memes are kinda boring in comparison - the prequels have amazing world building while sequels just do nothing but recycling content from the glory days - better characters because sequel characters have such bad writing and are painfully bland and uninteresting like Rey is all of a sudden shown as a stock character. Even Jar Jar is better than her (I don’t hate him, just I prefer Darth jar jar; the dude is overhated and he is the key to all this) - sequels just invent new plot holes while prequels are more consistent - lightsabers in prequels are perfect while sequels turned them into glow sticks. Sorry Kathleen, but you don’t even know how lightsabers work. - Clone wars is also another reason why the prequels work pretty well, as they expanded on some of the stuff

The bombers from the last jedi are basically star wars b-17G bombers from WW2 with the bomb bay and turrets to match. Odd little detail (I’m kinda a big enthusiast on this kinda shit) but on the data card for that thing on the lego box disney star wars is so uninspired at this point that they even basically used the real names of the b-17 guns as the guns the bomber has. Don’t get me wrong i love all the ww2 inspired stuff from all the previous star wars media but at this point they went so far as to not even think of a new idea or new names they just looked at some old ww2 stuff settled on a ‘that’ll do’ mentality. It just shows a blatant lack of effort or passion for the franchise seeing it as a new Marvel MCU to milk for profit
@zachary4670 Жыл бұрын
To be fair, I think naming the guns after the plane that inspired it is a cool touch. It’s also very much not unprecedented in the SW universe. You’re a history buff, clearly, so you are probably aware of all the other history-inspired names in the franchise. “Stormtrooper” is one English translation of the name for Hitler’s SS, the “Confederacy” of Independent Systems seems pretty obviously taken from the Confederate States of America, and (I find this one fascinating) the name “Separatist” was given to supporters of the colonial rebels during the Revolutionary War.

I may have my criticisms of how Disney has handled the new trilogy but in the shows they really have shown me they can make some very high quality stuff, and for that I am at peace with the matter. In any case I shall leave you with an interesting point myself. The death star run from a new hope was inspired by the dambuster’s raid, both the movie and the real event. The targeting computer was taken from scenes in the movie where they used a wooden tool to judge the perfect distance to drop the bomb between the two guard towers either side of the river, as it would skip correctly on the water to blow the damn and in no other way could this have been done
