I can see why these made your top 20 list ... Now to play the game of "Let's collect them all for the new Ant Room!" ... when it is finished being constructed and ready for occupants. Personally, I quite enjoy watching a single queen give rise to a whole colony more than seeing an already established colony, but that's just me. If I'd found this channel before I found a queen ant a few years ago, I might have a huge colony by now. I've always been a fan of insect watching, and I immediately knew that the beautiful creature I laid my eyes upon was no common wasp or hornet. She had wings and a rather plump belly. Found out later it was specifically a Pavement Ant, one of the native species to Virginia. You all may be happy to know, though, I did watch her for a while and she ended up crawling in a hole on a wall near one of my outside ponds, and not too long after I saw streams of little ants hurrying to and fro that very hole. I consider myself lucky to catch one of those rare glimpses of a queen outside of her nest.
