I often rewatch your videos and always get something more out of them. Because of this particular video, Angie and I put Kapustnica on our must-try list this past summer on our bike trip in Slovakia. One of the best things we ate! We’ve also both been inspired to make it. Congratulations on your successes this year and may you have a wonderful New Year! it’s not a traditional cultural thing but for the past 25 years i’ve been throwing pancakes at the moon at midnight on new year’s eve. it started after a really hard breakup right before the holidays. i was telling my brother that it was going to bum me out not to have someone to kiss at midnight & he advised me to start a new tradition. his exact words were “it could be anything, just, like, throw pancakes at the moon or something”. well, i took that quite literally & have been doing it ever since. over the years i’ve gotten many different friends involved, a few of whom have gone on to adopt the tradition as well. i love the idea that it is spreading. if anyone out there is interested in partaking there are no rules, it was born out of bucking tradition so anything goes. sometimes i like to add birdseed to the pancakes so that *if* i miss the moon some little critter will have a nice snack on me 🌜🥞

@briony57 I love this! As someone who looks at my place on the planet as being part of the community, and therefore should give back to that community, I've always provided some small portion of food to whomever might happen along. One day I might toss a handful of birdseed into the air as I pass under a line of birds on a telephone wire (they'll get it once I've passed on by), the next I might leave some cut up chicken for the neighborhood feral cats down the street, the next I might offer a pot of homemade spaghetti sauce and box of pasta to my neighbors, who I know are struggling. Now, I can throw pancakes at the moon. 😂😊❤

We will have New Mexican style posole. It’s a stew made with hominy, pork, and red chile. The corn is cooked in broth until it “pops” open, and with the chunks of pork, and the red chile, it’s just a very warming, and filling dish. I put a bit of shredded cheese over the hot posole, and eat it with a big flour tortilla. Happy New Year, Beryl! 🎉

Yesss, I'm so glad you did oliebollen! And that you like them! ☺️ I do feel like the raisins are an important addition. Oliebollen are often reheated (because we eat them all day, haha), so they can be a bit dry after some time. The raisins add that extra bit of moisture. I also just like the taste and added sweetness 😊 with raisins is how they are usually served.

I’m Japanese and white American, and I grew up in Hawaii. I grew up avoiding all the traditional foods I was supposed to eat with fireworks -black adzuki beans, soba (buckwheat noodles in broth), sunomono (pickles), and ogo (seaweed salad). There’s a whole different menu for New Year’s Day, which I also avoided! My white American family also has roots in Texas, and they eat specific things for New Years Day too. Now that I live on the mainland, I don’t eat anything in particular for NYE, but I will make some dishes for the day itself.

For an instant version of ollibollen...and I am 65 so this was over 50 yrs ago! I remember my grandma, making a quick snack for me and my sister. She would use refrigerated biscuit dough in the tube, she just cut each in half, made balls or she would make a hole in the center like a donut and really stretch it out because it would close....then she'd deep fry and cover with powdered sugar!! We loved these and always asked for them! (She also made THE BEST cream puffs from scratch but that was a whole process! I never could perfect those, hers came out perfect every time, tender and hollow inside waiting for whipped cream!!)

Hi, Thanks for the video. Most of the foods are new for me but on I do Know: Oliebollen Some remarks on Oliebollen. When I was young (over 50 years ago), Oliebollen without fruit were not so common as they are nowadays. Personally I prefer them with fruit. Basic fruit is dried grapes (Raisins and currants) and often a shredded apple is added. Some people add also many other fruits like dried cranberries, diced dried apricot pear and plum. If you Use dried fruit, you should soak it 15 minutes in advance. Some people use rum for that, but I am not a fan. Instead of soaking, you can also add more water to the mis but in general soaking tastes better. The recipe that you used is probably based on what bakers are making and is more bready than what people make at home. In the Netherlands it is easy as you can buy everywhere mixes with the proper proportions. If you have no access, I can give you my recipe for about 20 oliebollen: 250 gram of flour, 240 gram of liquid, 250 Gram of fruit, 20 gram of (melted) butter, 25 grams of sugar, an egg, half teaspoon of Salt, 1/3 teaspoon pumpkin spices 5 grams of dry yeast. As liquid, you can use water, milk, beer or a mix of that. When using beer, do not use a lager or an IPA as that is a waste of the beer. A dark sweet beer like a scotch ale is best. The result is a wet and sticky dough. DO NOT STIRR or inflate the dough after proofing! Scoop directly with an ice cream scoop or 2 spoons in oil of 180 degrees. End of the week it is that time again. Looking forward to it. Best wishes for 2024 from the Netherlands.

In Denmark the most traditional is Nytårstorsk ("New years cod". as in, a whole cod fish) but nowadays it's mostly the most extravagant meat you can find, but the cod is having a reneissance . But the dish that has to be on the table is filled baked potatoes. A whole potato with the most luxurious mash inside mixed with bacon, tons of chives and butter and then baked again. It just tastes like New Year's eve to me (and it's great hangover food). Also we have to have oysters. Happy New Year, Beryl!

True, that lady for sure made up stories. Palitaw is common in our province during the Summer months not New Years Eve 😂

@@abrqzxNo it's not. We also used to have palitaw during new years eve. It symbolises the family being together (glutinous rice) and the family rising above all challenges (since you can tell when it's cooked when the sticky rice patty floats)

One of the things I miss since moving from my native Netherlands: picking up oliebollen from a local stand and getting covered in powdered sugar and getting greasy fingers while eating them on my way home

When I grew up for New Year’s Eve we always had raw hamburger sandwiches. Fresh ground hamburger, rye bread, onions, salt, pepper, and mustard. I live in Illinois in the US but I believe it is a German thing. We also ate pickled herring in a cream sauce on crackers.

The raw ground and seasoned meat does sound German 😂 except I think your family substituted beef for pork. Probably for food safety reasons. While Mett, as we call it, is safe to eat here I wouldn't try it outside of Germany.

When you said Is there an ingredient that you know you'll love the dish if it's in there, the first thing I thought was cilantro. Then I realized how a majority of the population cannot stand cilantro. Then the Portugese guy said how everyone would love it. LOL I sure miss cilantro. It's not available in my city so today I made US-Mexican restaurant salsa minus the cilantro. Parsley instead, what a let down. Even my husband said, "Needs cilantro.": ) I am researching what ppl eat on NY and just learned about the hidden coin yesterday. In Germany people eat fish, pork, and beets, but never poultry cuz chickens walk backwards while they graze and that's bad luck. In recent years everyone seems to eat Raclette. But since we're having a guest, I wanted to make something he's never had, so it's going to be taco night. Believe it or not there are a lot of Germans who've never had tacos. Also your mixing dish is from my childhood!

Me watching this while eating leftover oliebollen, definitely a big tradition in the Netherlands! In Belgium you have them too, there they’re called ‘smouteballen’, where smout is an old Dutch word for the pork fat it was fried in
