I think some MPC users are getting confused about song vs arranger. I think the bottom line is that you can use song mode if you like/prefer. But now you can build a whole song in one sequence just as you would on the edit page of any Daw, like logic. In 2.x. Now, you can treat each sequence like a separate Daw project.

Dillio, Loopop has a video comparing the 2.0 to the 3.0 software side by side, which I found to be helpful in explaining the new workflow. In regard to the desktop environment, Akai told Loopop that the desktop environment will not be updated this year. Also be aware that projects made in 3.0 can’t be imported into 2.0, so songs started on the hardware can’t be read by the desktop. Concerning song mode, you’re overthinking it. You can record directly into the arrangement view just like a DAW. You can still string sequences together like before, but doing it directly makes more sense to me.

Kontakt's secret weapon is the per sample and per part massive range of filters, phasers and envelopes for anything. While I hate programming in Kontakt, it is superior.

Linear arranger is just a way to see your sequence. If you want to see the full song its easy! Only use one sequence for the entire song. Easy stuff! And i loooove being able to see the arranger in this way. I come from many DAWs and have always felt clunky in mpc not being able to see the various tracks im working on

the way you explained the arranger has to be overkill. No need to make different sequences.. like intro ..chorus..verse..etc if you're going to use an arranger. You can make the entire beat on one sequence all sounds exploded on separate tracks then organize it in the finished song format using the arranger. That's what it looks like to me.

Now they are functionally different tracks, so useful if you want to make sets. I’ve always found that the different sequences having independent track orders annoying, but now that finally makes sense if using a single sequence as a song.

I kind of want the Mac BECAUSE it doesn't have a linear arranger! I like the idea of building songs in blocks (sequences) and then arranging them in song mode. The idea being you can concentrate on one section of your song and have some variations of that section. And then try things out in song mode very easily. Thats a lot harder to do in a linear daw. You have to copy/paste sections around, then you forget to copy a section somewhere etc.. and it's just long. Also, when you get to full arrangement stage it's much easier with a mouse/keyboard etc. and being able to add flourishes/fills. Thats how Ableton works basically. Flesh out your song in session view and finish it in arrangement. I just hope it still have the song mode in MPC 3 otherwise you might as well use Logic on an iPad or something.

My Akai Force had this arrangement feature for a while & me coming from a MPC 1000, I felt the same way you feel. Trust me, it’s not going to be as difficult as you think. It’s going to be a lot easier & quicker to build your tracks, especially with the loop function. You’ll be able to go bar by bar and add/delete and make your variations smooth. You can even add locators to the arrangement so you can keep tabs on when transitions/switch ups happen in the song. It’s super dope. Song mode is cool & it was what I was used to as well but the arranger is a game changer once you learn it.

@@gkm214 I see what your saying. But I started on an mpc 2000 decades ago and since then been using DAWs (logic/reason/pro tools/ableton etc) and it’s just a whole different mentality. When you have a whole track in arrange mode it’s mentally hard to do detail. What ends up happening is you get lazy and just do basic mutes and drops and just leave it. Because any change you do you’ll have to copy it to 4 different places etc. So you just don’t bother. Say I want to try out 2 different bridges in an rnb song. It’s much easier on song mode to just switch between the two and play it back and see which one feels better. Than doing that in any arrangement mode on a daw. Also, when you’re doing it in a sort of “object oriented” fashion (to use a software development term). You make a change once and every section using that sequence gets that change. The focus that allows you to get on stuff is crazy. Especially when making repetitive music like beats or electronic stuff. I’m always looking for a song mode in daws. Only reason really has something similar. If they added to ableton it would be amazing! It’s probably the main reason I want to get another mpc. Maschines song mode is a bit convoluted. I like the simplicity of the old mpcs. In essence hip hop is not really about “songs” it’s about beats. Chaining beats together feels more hip hop to me. It’s almost like how a dj used to put breaks together and an mc just rhymed over it. Just simple. Just my view I suppose. Maybe the world has moved on lol!

It's not coming on desktop this year. Official. Standalone only. Personally, I never use the MPC with a computer - that was the appeal, that I could step away from a PC. For accuracy I got myself a stylus and it works a dream - better than a mouse.

Quite disappointing to me. I use the desktop software and have been waiting for 3.0 for quite a while. I get it, the hardware is usually Akai's top priority (I guess MPC Stems arriving on the software first was a one off thing), but they were able to release it for standalone within 4 months of the software release, so I'd expect the same the other way around.

Dillio, my big wish from Akai is full integration with the iMPC App, which should have STEMS (possible a better sound quality) because of the devices the app would be on. I prefer to do rough drafts on my smartphone then import my sequence/song to the MPC 3.0 and vice-versa via Bluetooth/Wi-Fi. My prediction is that iMPC App will be the iMPC 3 ,and this will complement the entire ecosystem of the MPCs. Facts

That's crazy that there isn't a desktop version for this. This sounds like something NI would do, release a hardware version and not have a compatible desktop version. Granted a lot of people claim create in standalone but how often do you not finish up your production in a DAW like Logic or Ableton? I heard in another video that there is not going to be a desktop version for this update for 2024. They have not announced that there will be or even when it will be released. I think they have received a lot of complaints from users who claim they only create in standalone.

@@dugnice vsts are virtual instruments. They only accept a few from "Air" but people Who make beats on computer programs have large collections of virtual instruments and will probably not switch to MPC regardless of the changes , because they won't be able to use their virtual instruments.

the update brings many great improvements, but it seems to me that akai wants to get rid of the legacy workflow, which to me is a step backwards. you can no longer use track mute to differentiate the sequences from each other, which in turn calls into question the usefulness of the sequences themselves. what's new is that if you mute a track in a sequence, it affects all other sequences as well, WTH? then the decision that they have killed programs and you're no longer able to change the programs within the tracks also makes this update pretty useless for me. seems like akai is focussing more on new users and the users who have been using mpc for decades are left behind and are forced to learn a new workflow. hope they improve in this area until the release.

I think that you can consider sequence as equal to arrangement as in you can have more than on in a project. You have always been able to have really long sequence but they are really hard to edit as you can only see one track at a time.

Arrange view is not practical on small screens that is why Roland had a DV out on the MV8800 to hook up a PC monitor. Since Akai is going the Abelton/Logic daw style I minus well continue to use Abelton since its way ahead of Akai at the moment. The MPC is no longer and MPC with this update.

URGENT !!! AKAI has apparently DEGRADED the SONG mode in 3.0! Why at least not keeping it as an option?? The only reason I have an MPC is because I can mute tracks individually and independently on each sequence separately! Just like I did on the old Alesis MMT-8. Song mode is THE feature that makes MPC worthwhile! And now you have apparently taken that fantastic feature away from us!? I will clearly NOT update to 3.0 if SONG MODE is missing. I definitely don't want the MPC to become like those boring linear software DAWS. Akai MUST bring back the pure song-mode feature. Have Linear AND Song Mode. But please don't throw away the best MPC feature -> SONG MODE must stay in 3.0. This is very important.
