Got the box last week and found that the Audio Units plugin does not offer multi-channel as an option. Just mono, stereo, 5.1. This is a major problem for me, - The VST version works as advertised... The Logic one does not. (Logic does not support VST).. So I guess I'm sending it back.... Unless anyone knows if 3.0 fixes the Audio Unit plugin??

I love this company dude. I started with Native Instruments/maschine mikro and was all in since 2011. But they never listen to us or do anything. Got a live 2 in 2020 and it’s just constant updates and progress. AND THEY LISTEN TO US!

When pattern blocks were killed between FL11 (registry tweak) and FL12, i tried to stick with FL but ultimately i felt so inefficient trying to housekeep the playlist that it forced me to move to Ableton Live (which has a tidier implementation of the clip-based workflow).

Thank you for a slick and thorough review. Great work as always! I think this is an impressive update for the MPC OS. For me, the unavailability of an arrangement view always kept me from finally moving from Maschine to MPC but now AKAI have added it, along with other great improvements. MPC Key 37 with the MPC 3 OS now looks close to perfect. This is going to hurt Native Instruments, but they only have themselves to blame by stopping investment in the Maschine platform.

The MPC 3 changes the file format of MPC projects from XML to Json. This means it is not backward compatible. It also opens the door for being able to share projects with the Akai Force, which has been using the new file format since it came out. I will have to see if the Force MPC 3 stuff is working now or if its looming in the future.

The Force can read the old MPC formats. I switched from the MPC to the Force 6 month ago. And I can access all my old MPC projects. I think the new MPC 3.0 will read the old MPC formats too.

XML -> JSON is pretty trivial, conversion-wise. They're just essentially different markup languages (data structures is probably more correct). If Akai didn't include backwards compatibility yet, I'd wager they'll include it soon (or a community member would write a tool for this).

Interesting update - they've addressed many key features that were missing. Disk streaming, arrangement and the merging of audio and midi tracks being the main takeaways. I did like the old workflow but I'm used to it. This is aimed at new users I suppose to make it easier as an entry point. Should have waited until the pc software was ready and released together as controller mode is defunct really.Having said that a HDMI out on newer MPC models would make a huge difference allowing big screen arranging and mixing without the need for the pc software at all. No mention of any new plug ins but maybe that's on its way. Graphic EQ and a decent reverb are needed in standalone.

5:49 "if you miss programs beyond that" in my case 2 things: 1st for mutes. I was muting tracks as a "pattern mute" where switching to a new sequence would not carry the mute whereas program mute was global. I use both options differently depending if I'm arranging or performing live. 2nd since mixing was happening at the program level, on one hand it was less flexible, on the other, guaranteeing consistency between sequences. Now you'll have to mix each sequence and actively check for consistency 🤔

IMPORTANT: The problem with the 3.0 update is the SONG MODE, as it has been severely DEGRADED. (as it stands right now) Song Mode is "still there".... well yes, but barely... Indeed, you can't mute (and record mutes) on each and every track independently / per sequence anymore! That is my most used feature, and the whole reason I got the MPC in the first place! It replaced my old but great Alesis MMT-8. So many MPC users are screaming about this problem now. That is a massive change that totally kills my usual workflow. All my +300 projects are filled with programmed mutes on and off... Thus, those projects will be incompatible with 3.0... a big loss! I will evidently not upgrade to 3.0, as long as they have not fixed the independent mute per sequence feature problem. Lets hop it's just a bug??

I think the "Slice Motion" is an interesting feature that can actually be used for Round-Robin Samples. We can in theory create 8-velocity drum pads with round-robin with a relatively infinite amount of round-robins. Finally.

The GUI seems to have a higher dependency on the touchscreen. Unsure if its smart move. I thought a MPC is all about q-links, button and pad combos press to develop muscle memory for a faster work flow. Not really convinced to be honest. Thanks for such an in depth video. This was very informative,along with the official video from Akai. The programs feature will be missed for us. We’ve been using mpc since the 4000 in the mid 2000’s and not having such an amazing feature that was the standard for the machine is simply heartbreaking . To top it off not being able to utilise the same drums from 1 kit on multiple tracks is mind boggling. Akai is trying to integrate into standalone exactly what they were trying to get away from and that’s the software DAW world. This new update while refreshing is overkill for a machine based off of simplicity and workflow. To many features which have nothing to do with the workflow of an already great machine . While killing what the machine was created and used for for 30+ yrs WORKflow.

I assume if the old project your same kits across different root programs (1,2,3) that it would transfer over to the new OS. it looks like Akai is focused on UX and bringing as many people in right now, so that type of seamless compatibility had to have been considered for all our legacy projects

@@ddmlxr yes. Only the first instance will play correctly. The rest will be turned into midi tracks. (Edit. For plugins. For drum programs it duplicates the program but each track has its own parameters so if you had kicks on one track hats on the next and snare on the third you would need to go into each respective editor to make changes . ) For plugins You could route these to the first track but if you mute the first track nothing else would play. Muting audio instead of muting sequenced midi still. (Still a sore point of mine) So your option is to create a track to pretend to be a program.. Then when you want to edit one of those midi track programs you need to navigate to the ghost program to hit edit.

Tubbediga has released a paid guide on the new MPC3 firmware, and one of the chapters is titled: "MPC 3 NEW SAMPLE LOOP MODE + LIVE AMBIENT PERFORMANCE" I'm hoping this is a new way to manually launch loops/clips like in MPC2 Do you have any information about it?

@@j.cnnrtv no sorry I don’t have more info except that clip programs are gone. I can kind of imagine a live looping workflow if you create an arranger loop the size of your looper loop and export to a track - that might work but I haven’t played with it yet

This is an abomination of the MPC workflow to look even more like a generic DAW in a box. Programs being gone is a dealbreaker for me. They ARE the MPC workflow and they're what allow my workflow to move as fast as it does. Now they've completely disrupted the entire basis of their workflow design that made them stand out to just be a worse DAW. This is BS.

@@user-rv8wb1nl1b I'm on board with a lot of the workflow changes they made here and the conveniences like being able to rearrange the order of FX which should have been there since day 1 frankly, but this is too far gone for me. I've used the MPCs for decades BECAUSE of their workflow. Why would they cater to an audience who DOESN'T like them and constantly complains that they should be something they're not instead of their CORE AUDIENCE? 🤦‍♂️

You can literally replicate the program paradigm in this new update by using MIDI tracks as Loopop shows. What's lost with this change?

It's much more tedious because I'd have to copy a track including all of its data including MIDI information and automation data that I would then have to manually go in and delete potentially just to start a new sequence with the same "program" of sounds. It completely kills the workflow of what makes an MPC an MPC and the very reason I have used them for decades now. All to appeal to people who don't like their product. Not a smart move IMO

Looks amazing. I can’t wait to see the next gen of mpc hardware. I’d love a big touch screen and layout and interface like Electra one to control synths and plugins. I like how much development they’re giving to their products. I’ve never owned an akai but it looks tempting

They dropped "Clip" programs! I can't believe this. I used Clips all the time to loop samples of different lengths, and now in 3.0 the entire Clip programs is GONE. Please tell me Clips will be back in the public release.

thanks for the video. Would love to see sample chopping features added like Serato before the final release. Adding "Random" to Threshold, region, bpm and manual. Like Serato the ability to lock in particular chops and then hit random again would be killer. Possibly even adding a feature that after locking in a sample from random, the ability to time stretch and pitch change each locked sample individual would be an epic 3.0 addition. cheers

I genuinely preferred the programs separate from the tracks because I often sketch out using a limited number of programs and then replace them as I evolve the composition. Now, I think I'll need to be more precise from the get go to not have extra steps created by 3.0. It's just another workflow.

I'm really loving MPC3. But they need to bring back odd time signatures. Loopop, spread the word that we need odd signatures in both quarter and eighth note division! Thanks for the great work as always!

@ I think you can do polyrhythms by changing loop length of each track, but odd time signatures is a different story.

As always, great overview. Youre the best. Question: In MPC3 how do i save a plugin to a "favorites" folder. I cannot seem to find it anywhere. I loved that in MPC 2 , made my workflow fast.

I just got the Live II a week ago, what a time hahah! Love everything, though coming from older gen MPCs I feel like removing programs is a 50/50 move. It’s way easier to bank sounds having programs and that’s partly what made MPC an MPC. I hope navigating sounds and organizing kits within one “track” will still be easy as I don’t dig 1-1 track workflow. I always bang a whole kit with several drums similtaneously and only explode when mixing

I’m glad I really only use my Live for live performance uses. All I wanted was disk streaming and not be limited to the Ram for backing tracks. Breaking the Program/Track workflow is majorly bad to me but over the years I’ve had many friends who had a hard time grasping that workflow. I learned on an MPC 16 years ago, so for me it was incredibly fast and intuitive. So this will now be a machine purely for live performance, and my MPC60 will remain my main drum machine and midi sequencer (along with an RK-008). Besides, I never liked how the Live II didn’t have a track +/- button, and List Edit was much worse than the Step Edit that was in legacy MPCs.

So strange that this is finally catching up to the finished Roland MV8800 features. 18 years later. MV8800 had the arranger view, the clip view (pattern views), could launch patterns based on patterns assigned to pads, explode drum tracks in one click. The only thing it was missing was a fast processor, some SD card reader, stream from disk. Efficiency though - 512mb RAM would get you several songs within one project easy. I’ve never run out of RAM. Also the internal instruments you create can be on their own midi track without taking up an actual midi channel. I’ve been sequencing 10 synths including full 16 midi channel multitimbral synths, all easily done with the MV8800. You can even freely place an audio track contents across multiple patterns in song mode. Was really hoping the MV-1 could come as a continuation of this brilliant instrument, but sadly, they created something completely different in the MV-1. That said, as soon as the version 3 comes out of beta mode, I’m going to buy an MPC One +. The speed of the hardware will finally draw me to replacing my two MV8800’s. I’ve been patiently waiting for something like this since the launch of the MPC Live and X as standalone machines. What a bizarre loss and wait for products to catch up to 2007 MV8800 version. The MV8800 final version has really withstood a test of time for brilliance. That said, BeatMaker 3 on iPad has had all this functionality for many years. Basically since it’s launch.

I thought the update that changes my MPC X's interface came out yesterday on August 8th? I rushed home from work this morning and updated my MPC to 2.15 but the interface is still exactly the same? Did I do something wrong or is the update that changes our entire interface not even out yet? And if not, when is it coming?
