My engagement ring was secondhand, because my husband didn't want to buy new diamond and create more market demand for this precious stone. If you research jewellery industry you will see how cruel and unfair it can be. I'm very thankful he did it this way. ♥️ and cherish my ring every day.

But why are people so offended when you tell them that you don't want anything new? I know my family will be.
@LifeLostSoul4 жыл бұрын
My strategy when my family asks me with I want for Christmas is I give them a list of items I would have bought anyway that are items that are not possible to find second hand/ things I have been having trouble finding second hand. Like rechargeable batteries, next year's supply of bamboo toothbrushs, smart outlets or bulbs to cut down on energy usage, solar battery pack, plants etc. Or ask for experiences.
@Iquey4 жыл бұрын
They might just take it personally as a roundabout way of you telling them: you don't know my tastes as well as you think you do. But you know what? That's fine! Money is a great gift.
@silkedalebrosig53674 жыл бұрын
They want to show their love for you, and it's normalised in our culture to show that love with physical gifts. Ask for an experience (e.g. concert/theatre tickets), or, if there's nothing you want, ask them to donate the money they would have spent on you to a charity of your choice.
@diemdia4 жыл бұрын
LifeLostSoul I do the same thing, because my family is really weirdly adamant about not wanting to buy used things. I ask for things that I really need and would have to buy new anyway, then just take hella care of those things once I've got em. (Though I think I'm slowly getting them to warm up to the idea)
@adrienneneilson86214 жыл бұрын
Another good way around that is having them make a donation to your favorite charity because at least instead of saying no to all gifts they feel like they are giving u something

I straight up told my family that the books I'm asking for (which constitute like 90% of my Christmas list) can be secondhand. They'll end up spending less money and the books read the same as if they were brand new. It's a win win.

I feel like buying experiences for people such as a trip, concert tickets, sports game tickets, events, etc. are the best way to give gifts because you know it’s something the person will enjoy and go to and it’s much more sustainable. They will have the memories of the experience and it is not wasteful aside from the gas to get to the event. Overall, I think it can be just as thoughtful as a physical gift if not more 🎁 💝

Really good low waste present ideas that I've done in the past - cookie in a jar (reused jar with all the ingredients and you just add wet ingredients), pot plants (I propogate my plants and reuse pots my other plants have grown out of), and cheeseboards with snacks (I thrifted a wooden board, got some crackers, chutney and chocolate and tied it up with natural thread I had). My aunt also gave me the best gift, a thrifted set of sipping glassses with cute little flowers on them. Handmade or personalised gifts feel so much better to give and receive 😊

Sometimes the idea of giving is so ingrained in the lifestyle it can be hard to disconnect from 👎ThredUP sounds like a fantastic option for clothing related items! I am still purchasing gifts for our nieces and nephews, but only the children. This year I've opted to purchase the Adopt an Animal program from WWF. I am a crafter, and Pagan (protect the earth folks), so for many, many years have given thrifted, recycled, and upcycled gifts to my family and friends. In fact, one time I gave a store bought present to my friend (I honestly thought she would love it, and it was on discount!), she was a tad miffed! I asked why, and finally, she said that she felt that I must like the people I gave homemade, thrifted and upcycled gifts to, more because I hadn't spent my time and love in producing the item..hmm! Well, learning curve there! So we returned the jacket I got her, and went thrift shopping! We got a few things, and spent the afternoon upcycling and painting and distressing the items to match her home decor...we had a fantastic time! I think doing that was so much more personal, and wish I could do it that way for everyone! 😁 😁 😁

Seeing this video post-Christmas but thought I'd share anyway--- This year, my husband and I only gave and asked for experience gifts. We gifted movie theater vouchers, cooking classes, art classes, an escape room experience, a restaurant gift card, and tickets to a broadway show. We did print the e-gift card pages so our family had something to "open" so that was a bit of paper waste, but it was pretty minimal. Meanwhile, my sister gave us an Airbnb giftcard, my mom and dad gave us a restaurant gift card for a fancy date night, and my husband gave me a gift certificate for 3 massages at a local spa. All in all, it felt really good to walk away from the holiday knowing we didn't buy a bunch of STUFF and we didn't end up with a bunch of STUFF we don't really want or need. Yay!

I think environmentally friendly gifts can include things that will be used up like food items, herbal tea, candles, bars of fancy artisan soap or natural candles. Also gift cards can make wonderful presents that don't take up much space. One year I gave my aunt one for $50 for a store she could get items like cleaning supplies from. Saving someone money off of regular everyday items they use like groceries or personal care items is a wonderful gift.

We grown-ups mainly do small gifts like teas, shower gels, homemade snacks or a book at most. Kids in the family can ask for big expensive things like a bike or computer, etc. but no one would ever just go and buy these things at random. Maybe we're just not rich enough for this kind of shenanigans, but for us Christmas is about spending time together, eating great food and enjoying freetime. And if you really hate what you got, do a crappy secret santa with your friends and usually every gift will find it's perfect recipient.

My grandma was always into thrift shops, I think she teached me early to value things for what they are, not for the price/label/brand. I feel in addition to gifting second-hand items, it is okay to buy things produced by local craftsmen or artisans, thus supporting them and not big unsustainable corporations. I mean only gifts that the person would enjoy and use.

First time viewer here! 🙋♀️ I really enjoyed this video...I had no idea that the majority of returns get binned. Last year my boyfriend's family finally agreed to do Secret Santa after suggesting it for years. This meant only having to shop for 1 person rather than 12. This allows us to give one person something(s) they really want rather than buying a bunch of "junk" for numerous people. Thankfully, we're doing it again this year. I've asked for books and made it very clear that they do not need to be new, and I can't wait for my person to open their gifts because I know they'll be happy as I carefully selected practical things from their wish list. I will definitely be checking out Thread Up too! Cheers!

Thankfully I celebrate Chanukah and it's not actually a gift giving holiday. People still give me gifts and I give people gifts any time of the year, but I go out of my way to give gifts I know they actually need and will use. If I receive a gift I don't need, I donate it to a local charity that gives away my donations for free. This year I thrifted a cheesecake pan my mom wanted, it was like $3, she was overjoyed, and our impact was smaller!

I use to work at Target and they had four options when things were returned: one was to put back on shelf like new or repackaged with a reduced price, and three of them were defective depending on the item. Green were like out of season or not on file or slightly defected items like clothes, accessories, household items, etc and they were to be donated; if any of those items were crazy messed up then you can override it to red. Yellow were like defected electronics or disks; so I'm guessing were either returned to manufacturing place or recycled. And then red were things like food, open cosmetics, containers of chemicals, broken glass, overridden greens, etc and they were disposed of according to the label sticker on them (depended on item). Also Target has plastic bag drop offs, deposit drop offs, and you get 5 cents off per reusable bag used. But I'll admit that the pizza hut part did a lot of food waste and so did Target cafe. Something they can work on.

for sure for sure. I make gift lists for my children each year, for the family members that buy presents for them, and no one ever takes my recommendations for MY children. I ask for cash, gift cards, etc and we can choose where we purchase their clothes and some other odds and ends from. Same for baby showers. We used all compostable materials and metals and glassware this time around, and asked for a diaper that’s biodegradable or at least for cash to buy them, and we received walmart brand diapers and wipes and things that are not only horrible for our children but the planet too D: So so stressful. We don’t need gifts from anyone, but when they ask what to buy and feel the need to buy, it’d be nice if they’d at least take our advice and listen to our wants.

I LOVE thrifting, and I would always prefer something secondhand over something brand new, and I think many people won't notice/mind if you give them something secondhand. I just don't understand the focus on brand names in this video. I realize they might have a reputation of being reliable, etc., but you can find thrifted clothes from unpopular/unknown brands that look and perform just as nice, for even cheaper! I can't imagine spending more than $10 or $15 on a single item, unless it's a jacket or shoes/something of really high quality that I can't find anywhere else. Also, supporting these brands so heavily also means supporting all the energy they use and waste they create from mass production . . . brands are overrated. Okay, rant over.

It's different for birthdays, but by now for me christmas is mainly about being together and spending time with loved ones. In my family Christmas is not about the gifts at all. We will buy some little gifts for children that we know (and when I am a mom I will buy my kids gifts ) but we personally feel that we are each others gifts, so we like to put the money on delicious food cooked with love and spend a lovely time together. I love gifts, receiving them and giving them but I really love to be the thankful person I am that really sees my friends and family and people in general as the actual gifts. They TRULY are. Meeting my loved ones is the ultimate gift. Laughing and smiling with them, hugging them, talking with them. It warms me deeply. However, sometimes gifts sneaks in, because I just love surprising people, but I do like to give a useful gift when I do give one, so I like to pay for my dad's gas as he drives far to visit me. He appreciates it so much. But this year he'll get a fun mug too because it has a purpose, he will use it often, smile and maybe even laugh and think of me and how lovely I find him - as it is written on the mug. And mom will be surprised too, something she's wanted for a long, long time but never expects a gift and it will spark a joy every day she sees it. But I will say, the best gifts are sustainable, they last for years, are useful, they help the environment, they save us money! I mean, I looked at a video of reusable "paper" towels and I felt blown away, that's so cool to have! Holy moly! I am serious, it fascinates me! 😄 I am enjoying being more and more sustainable!

I wish more people understood how newest flagship gadgets (like latest iPhone) are actually at most 5-10% better than older second-hand options, and you'll almost never notice the difference, while you'll save up to 90% of the price, and save 2 (!) electronic items from going to the landfill. So, if you want to get a gift of a new phone, ask your boyfriend/girlfriend/family to get you a used one in good condition, and save the money for a trip together or something.

A few Christmases ago I got my dad a sailing boat mug and it was from a thrift shop (along with loads of used sailing books I found) and he did not mind at all! He uses that mug every day! :)

I always buy christmas mugs for christmas (I don't know why) and usually they don't have any label from where it's from so...can't return something you don't know where it was bought from 3:) hehehe!! But still I think it's a useful thing to have during christmas time, making some hot coco, drinking some tea etc.

My suggestion about Mysterious Boyfriend (TM) shirt is to cut off the other sleeve and make it a sleeveless tank. Hemming the armscyes is simple to do, even by hand!

I know that everybody does not have the time to do this, but this year I decided to make all my Xmas gifts myself (knitting, crochet...) :)

If you do buy something new, it’s great to support small businesses!! Get something from Etsy or your local artisans market/local stores.

Thanks for sharing your shopping and gifting experience with Thred up. I signed up but have been hesitant to make my first purchase. I sent up my wishlist on Etsy for some awesome second hand Pendleton sweaters

This is a-ma-zing! I live in Europe and sadly this company does not ship here. However, I have a day planned where I go and visit every thrift store in my area to just take a look and see what (presents) I can get and I'm so exciteddd! Thank you for making this video and bringing awareness about this topic :)

I love this video and I love this concept!! This should definitely be more accepted! Almost every gift I'm giving this year is second hand except consumables 🌍💓

Ah yes I’m the same way! I personally just ask for gift cards then I can choose what i want to get😊 I don’t enjoy getting presents that I won’t end up using. Another thing is I’ve been going to my local library a lot instead of buying books :)

I totally loved the idea of giving second hand gifts! Thanks for that!
@charlottenicholls42414 жыл бұрын
So, here's the thing - giving someone a gift then asking them if they like it or not or mind if it's secondhand is so laughably not the way to get honest answers from people. It felt so awkward watching them put on the spot like that.
