Although I can't say it is the true answer, since it's just a conjecture, I can easily think of a simple explanation for the Displacer Beast to not use fangs or claws to attack. That is simply that it would reveal their actual location. The tentacles are long, it is hard to tell where the beast is precisely just being hit by tentacles. But a claw attack would reveal to you at least the precise position of the foreleg, and on top of that the general direction of the body, since a leg isn't prehensile like the tentacle. This is too much information about the beast's actual location. A bite attack would be even worse, revealing the location of its head right away.

Maybe they don't use their fangs and claws beacause it would take them to get even closer to their enemy, making it easier for the foe to identify the real position of the displacer beast. Darkvision is black and white only (colors cannot be discerned). It does not allow characters to see anything that they could not see otherwise-invisible objects are still invisible, and illusions are still visible as what they seem to be. Likewise, darkvision subjects a creature to gaze attacks normally.
@megamanx4664 жыл бұрын
@@william0j With darkvision you can ONLY see in black and white(and grey shades in between). This inherently probably means that the "cones" in your eyes are temporarily changed(if the spell) to "rods" making your vision many more times sensitive in the dark. You can not see color though with darkvision. In rare cases of whole population of real life humans, they actually have to over cook their food, because they can not see the pink of meat turn to a greyish. However, they like to stay up at night, because to them it's like day time(also, they perceive the sun as brighter than normal humans). "Seeing ripples in the weave" is more likely to be Blindsight.

One main reason it does not use it's claws and teeth in combat (though very effective and deadly when brought to bear) is due to its awareness of its own displacement ability. The tentacles allow the beast to strike from the location of its displaced image making the target believe the image is the actual beast. Like the old gag of reaching behind someone to tap them on the opposite shoulder while you appear on their other side.

I’ve been playing this game since 2000 when I was 9 and am still playing today. I loved looking threw 3rd ed monster manuals and my dads 2ed books when I was younger. I would read more about dnd than I would ever read an assigned book in school. One of my favorite books was the 3rd ed dragonomicon. The art lore and design of the basic chromatic and metallic dragons all displayed in a handy little book. I would play as much as I could and would go with my pops to origins and gen con and would play organized play for many years before life would force me to be an adult and get a job causing me to pretty much do my own hombrew games with a select group of friends off and on when I could. Since I have discovered this channel it amazes me how little I had truly know about monsters and lore threw out the editions of dnd and the fact that you dig up all this research threw the 5 editions of this game to compose all this stats is something I appreciate very much. Your info helps me to be a better DM for my groups and inspires me to creat new stores with the knowledge you have gathered. So I guess what I’m trying to say is thank you. Monster Manual: “...use their malevolent intelligence...” Also Monster Manual: “INT 6 (-2)
@FormerRuling4 жыл бұрын
6 intelligence in 5e is considered near-human level of intelligence; the creature would be expected to be able to plan advanced tactics and solve puzzles and possibly even comprehend human language if taught. I know RP wise it kind of breaks down when building a PC where if you roll for stats its possible to be like a lvl1 fighter with no schooling in their background and have like 12 intelligence which technically RP wise makes you a super genius.
@MarkLewis...4 жыл бұрын
@@FormerRuling Not exactly... A human with the intelligence of "6" would equate to an IQ of only about 60-80 on that scale, where 100 (or 10-11 dnd) is average, 140 (12-15 dnd) is exceptional, and 160+ (16+) is genius. So, a feral or trained aggressive beast, with the intelligence of "6" would be an exceptionally intelligent animal. For a human of 6 intelligence the only puzzles they may solve , with significant difficulty, would be square-peg to square hole and round peg to round hole. This would be a very challenged human, but for a feral or trained beast, this would be quite exceptional... Relatively speaking.

@@MarkLewis... Thats roughly what I said? I don't see where we disagree lol.
@MarkLewis...4 жыл бұрын
@@FormerRuling that's why I said "not exactly" which is a way of saying you were mostly correct. Factoids are not proven to be untrue, they are probably,but not necessarily untrue. A "Factoid" is.... "The Blue whale is the largest sea-creature." Why? Because we haven't explored all of the Earth's oceans. In fact, (pun intended) we've explored very little of our oceans, so the declaration "The Blue whale is the largest sea-creature." does not have enough evidence to be promoted to an actual "fact", though believed. (Even though most look at it as a fact and not a factoid.) However, the Theory of Evolution is an accepted proper fact, because though we don't know everything about Evolution, we have a tremendous amount of evidence to support the claim. This is the difference... Small but not unimportant.

It actually makes a ton of sense that displacer beasts only attack with their tails - tail attacks are much easier to mask with displacement, since they're long and flowy, and thus the displacement can strike with them simultaneously and you would have hardly any idea which was the real beast. Whereas if it were to claw at you or bite you, it would become apparent very quickly which beast were real.

I love their origin explanation in the dark Walker on Moonshae trilogy where they were a creation of the god malar as an affront to the earthmother

True fact: North Americans mountain lions (cougar), Jaguars, Tigers and Panthers have also been recorded killing prey for what is assumed to be sport or practice. ...the more you know

domestic cats are actually known for playing with their prey and not eating it after they kill it. So I guess felines just have this in their blood both in real and fantasy words.

Literally every cat does that. I thought it's common knowledge.

You should definitely do some Abyss stuff. More specific, Demon Lords. And even more specific, Miska Wolf Spider or Obox-Ob. But anything from the Abyss to be fair would be amazing.

Ooooh, I just had an idea for a tricky social non-combat encounter... (i came up with this during the video so the idea is literally just a few minutes old and thus not fully formed :P but it's something to evolve!) So, you have two factions/guilds/nations/organizations/something who do not get along for some reason. But for some plot reason, they need to co-operate, so the players are tasked with convincing the leaders to meet.. and after succeeding with that, they also need to join the same meeting to make sure everything goes well. And this is where things get particularly tricky (which the players should have a way to find out before that meeting, perhaps via another npc who knows about it or something else)... Basically, one of the leaders has a Blink Dog as a trusted companion, which NEVER leave that characters side, which also acts as an additional bodyguard... The OTHER leader.... has a Displacer beast, with whom they have actually formed a true trusted companionship (i.e the disp.beast will not betray them)... In addition, neither of the leaders know about the other leaders pet/companion, otherwise they'd rethink everything. So not only do the players have to make sure the meeting goes well, between two npc characters who dislike/hate each others.... There is the added complexity of that, because of the native instinctual hatred between their companions/pets as well, and as this video showed... a simple "No kitty, Stay!" just won't do. That could be an interesting situation, especially if the players really NEED them both alive, so they can't just say "we tried but oops!",,, That's all I have -so far- and it clearly needs a whole lot more, but... i think that would be a really interesting social encounter in which need to avoid bloodshed at any cost. Any ideas to further flesh out this story? including possible solutions to the beasts (remember ,they will NOT leave their companions side), and also other additional stuff such as... who are these 2 leaders, and what do they lead? guilds, nations, other, and so on... let's flesh this out together, maybe even come up with an entire community created oneshot! :D
