Living in the Pacific Northwest with Hal Byrd

In this episode I discuss some little, if ever, discussed factors of living in Vancouver, WA. If you've been considering a move to The Pacific Northwest, and more specifically the Portland Metro / SW Washington area, you've likely spent time on Google or KZbin trying to learn as much about the area as possible...
What's the difference between the City of Vancouver & its unincorporated areas?.. How convenience is Vancouver, W compared to Portland, OR Suburbs?.. And what Vancouver are we even talking about - British Columbia or what?!..
As always, thank you SO MUCH for supporting this channel and please let us know more ways we can continue to be that friend & resource in The PNW for you. I look forward to hearing from you and hopefully working together - Hal

I used to live in the Coov, and if I ever move back to the Portland area, I'll be there again! What people need to know about Vancouver, is that it's not as separated from Portland as say Ogden or Provo is from Salt Lake City, or Tacoma and Everett are from Seattle. Those places are 30-40 miles out and kind of like "stand alones". Vancouver is literally right on top of Portland and you literally breath the same oxygen molecules!

It’s easy to take a place for granted. I definitely took my hometown for granted a bit when I lived there. I’m happy that my chosen cities have been so great, albeit in different ways. One of the many things I love about Vancouver is that we have so many parks. Even though I don’t have young children it’s so pleasant.

I don't want HOAs because they're usually mismanaged, go bankrupt and the prices skyrocket. I used to live in a condo where my HOA was $100 a month. Now I look on zillow and the monthly HOA there now is 600 dollars. I can handle property taxes going up but HOAs are a unpredictable expense on something long term like your house.

I am a disabled Marine, and I have lived here for a couple years now. The Vancouver VA has many things available, and the Portland VA has anything they are missing and is only a 30 minute drive away. (I live a couple blocks away from the Vancouver VA)

I didn’t realize that this was about Vancouver, WA when it showed up on my feed, as I live in Northern British Columbia, so I thought it was in reference to Vancouver, CANADA. Still, after a minute or two, I was drawn in because I knew nothing about “ that other Vancouver”. Very interesting stuff.

My address was 14th & Markle. We called it “VANBEARIA”. There was a kegger somewhere close, always. Friendly people. Cops were always close by, the courthouse just blocks away. “The cops were friendly too”. I was 18, we split $175. I think Im around 65 or so now, Retired out in Fern Prairie, It’s a little bit like Vancouver was. And “you are headed our way”, thanks to the Colombia River. Plenty of room out here. DKS!

To live in Vancouver has been my dream for a few years now. And now that I know is also called “Vantucky” just makes my desire greater now! 😃 BTW all services are way more expensive in CA than in Vantucky. Perhaps medical is easier to find but given the insurance premiums , co-pays, etc. is cheaper to ride it out and hope you don’t die! 😂

Thank you for adding a segment about crime! We’re moving there in the next week from central North Carolina, and the crime stats kinda have me freaked. I’ve never had to worry about my car being broken into/stolen anywhere on the east coast, it’s just a nonissue here. I especially started looking up crime because I was looking up what my local grocery stores would be there and all the reviews stated there was security guards checking receipts or having locked codes on bathrooms because of high theft? Also unlike anything I’ve seen over here. Guess what I’m trying to ask is it as bad as what it’s coming across? Is crime something you have to think about day to day and actively navigate? I’m a vigilant person naturally, but I’m anxious to be moving into an area where it’s just going to be a fact of life to deal with the crime 😕

Great question! For my husband and I it simply came down to the tax advantages WA offers as well as living in a town with less people and slightly lower housing prices - BUT being close enough (abt 15 minutes) to all the cool & unique aspects of Portland that we love & indulge on a weekly basis... I look at Vancouver more as a suburb of Portland than an entirely different city & state. Thanks again - Hal

Don’t forget, so many new people coming from Portland and California, it has turned into a city of idiots for driving. The traffic jams have gotten out of control. Super bright car and truck lights at night. Always get blinded while driving. Homeless people. No modern architecture. Vancouver sucks. No job opportunities either.
