When speaking of Mexico safety and the dangers of living in Mexico, people usually talk about whether or not they felt safe and if anything bad happened to them while they were there. However, I think there's something much more important that should be considered when comparing one country to another.

I was in Oaxaca Mexico for two months and it was beautiful. There is dishonesty in Mexico. Less crime than the states. I was flying from Oaxaca to the states. I had to stay in Mexico city for 1 day. I had major pain in kidney. I have history of kidney stones. I stayed in a hotel. I asked the manager if there was a hospital near by. I arrived to the hospital. I did not know it was a public hospital. I asked them how much it cost. They told me it was free to people. I told them I was American. They said I was welcome to use it. The clerk said we are all Americans. They provided me with great care and service. The staff, nurses and Doctors were all professionals. I was treated better in that hospital than some American medical care places. 5 stars.

Excellent video, Jordan. We moved to Veracruz state 2 years ago. I had one restaurant try to cheat me by surreptitiously adding a tip to the bill. I told them that I resented them thinking they could get away with that and I reported them to PROFECO. 6 months later I was back in that neighborhood and they are out of business. That's our only crime experience in 2 years. As for health, our care is excellent. I fell a few months ago at a busy intersection due to becoming dehydrated while running. I hit my head and lost consciousness. People put me in a car for safety until my wife arrived to take me to the private hospital. The total bill, including ER, IV, brain scan, neurologist and 4 hours occupying a bed was $120. My wife and I were volunteer EMTs for 15 years on an ambulance service. The bill in rural Colorado would have been $3000 minimum. We are safer here than in Denver. Friends who grew up in a dangerous rural mountain area nearby have warned us about places it is not safe to go due to carjackings and robberies, but when I lived in Virginia in the 1960s there were places in the mountains that were likewise unsafe. A friend has to pay a criminal gang for protection for his restaurant. One of my brothers just retired from the San Francisco police department. The same thing has happened there. Overall, I think we are objectively as safe here as in most places in the US. And the people are magnificent. If I went looking for trouble, I could find it here, just like anywhere else. But I don't. And I am treated much more kindly and graciously than a typical Mexican immigrant in the US.

As someone who live in the middle east, i have to tell you that the middle east is not what you expect, i mean not at all, we're Safe more than you, we can go outside and do whatever we want walk in any street without saying something like: (no that street, or that neighborhood is dangerous, we can walk after mid night and we're sure that we're completely safe, I don't say we don't have problems and we're perfect, but oh god our problems is so much less than you think, except Palestine from this because it's occupied by israel, now in the end, if you hate when someone have a wrong perspective about your country, other people getting mad too when you say something not true about their countries without checking the facts.

Your summary is exactly my take on Mexican health care, temptations of the sugary drinks there, the health value of affluence in whatever society, the health care in MX vs the USA, the ability to avoid major trouble by not walking into the wrong place at the wrong time while doing the wrong thing. Great title, as the content surprises the viewer who is expecting a different narrative and list of dangers (the drama of crime), when the great danger for the majority is really treating our body badly (nutrition & health care). The video of the scenery and historical sites is wonderfully compelling, like a great advertisement of real stuff in MX!

Mexico has an abundance of amazing cuisine and you don't need to go to gourmet restaurants to eat amazing well balanced food! Such as a Fonda where you eat comida corrida. A street taco is better than Mcdonald's. It has fresh hand made tortillas fresh vegetables fresh salsa beans no processed food or cheese etc. In USA you have Fast Food restaurants in every corner and there are lines for the neighborhood Country Buffet where you see morbidly obese people not to mention the people of Walmart that fight for a motorized cart so that they don't have to walk.

Informative video, but one stat that is very troubling in Mexico is the number of "Desaparecidos" -- missing people. Last time I check the number was over 100,000 people, and if I remember correctly that number is not considered in the stats for the murders. I have been in a few places in Mexico and corrupted cops really make me upset. They specifically target visitors, they stop them for some fictional infractions and want the bribe. I try not to drive in Mexico anymore for that reason.

I live two hours from the Mexican border. I spent my teens traveling to Mexico with my family and later with friends in my 20s. The last time I was there, it was 15 years ago due to the drug cartels. It’s simply too dangerous during those years of travel, we learn to separate our money into multiple locations. The cops or federales will take everything they see. So I have a ticket wallet with less than $20 and pull that out when you get pulled over include an old Costco card ID, etc. and do not leave your real wallet in a purse or other obvious location. Playing stupid I don’t speak Spanish etc. is an excellent coping mechanism. I sent this to the US Embassy they won’t like it. And if you guys don’t believe what I say then you can piss off for all I care I’m just trying to save your lives. I’ve been to Mexico many times and so is my father so I know what I’m saying. Don’t hate on my comments. I have a right to express what I have seen in Mexico.

When I lived in the States, I got robbed. Living in Mexico, I got robbed. I've heard of friends who got robbed in Europe. So thieves are everywhere. It's just a matter of taking precautions like you say. And yes, Mexicans, since the 70's were introduced thru government approval to sugar filled "food" imported from the US, which then has been replicated in their own brands. Therefore obesity has risen to the point that now it is the No. 1 country with obesity, 75% of the population, and No. 1 in with diabetes. Government is just starting g to make some changes but it is know that sugar is addictive therefore there is a whole country full of adicts of sugars and junk food as well. I could go on and on.

some people are just stupid....I was in La Paz earlier this year and even at 10 or 11 pm I was walking around and approached several single women and asked them if they ever felt walking alone at night was dangerous and every single one said they had no qualms about walking around at night. Families with small children even hang out on the Malecon well past 10pm just enjoying the sights and sounds. I am retiring there in the next couple years. The people there are great but you always have to keep your guard up to some extent! I stayed in Airbnb in regular mexican neighborhoods and constantly asked my hosts about crime and they said no one breaks into cars or homes and since regular citizens don't usually have guns road rage doesn't really happen as the roads are a free for all anyway so you just go with the flow especially at 3 lane 4 way ALTOs...always exciting.....I loved it and is safer than any large city here...but of course there are shitty areas everywhere....stay out of them.....duh and cheap good weed is everywhere and not just from cartels necessarily.....a definite bonus

I don't disagree with how dangerous the US is as the culture is just different in the USA than it is in most all other countries. But just as the number of intentional murders drop if you take out the cartel it does the same for USA if you take out gang on gang violence. The most danger actually lies in other crimes including violent. We have felt pretty safe in our several vacations to Mexico. As for health I see the more relaxed lifestyle in Mexico over the US as a big plus to your health.

I cannot speak for all of the United States but life in Los Angeles has gotten dangerous with stores being invaded by gangs of thieves who clear out thousands up thousands of dollars in merchandise during a single heinst. I work for a high end department store and we have been robbed twice in recent months. At a neighboring shopping Center, the St. Laurent store was invaded and almost $1 million of merchandise stolen in that single incident. Though my relatives live throughout Mexico with one being kidnapped, I am uncertain that crime in Mexico is anymore dangerous than it is in here in Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco and Chicago, just to name a few.

Very good informative video. I never thought about how class standing can have an effect on life expectancy but, when put in the context of going from "middle class" in the US to the top 1% in Mexico it makes a lot of sense. Another factor that I didn't consider until watching this video is how class and race may have an effect on life expectancy in Mexico. Depending on where in the USA, life expectancy for African American men on average can range from about 65 in Louisiana to about 85 in Hawaii. I wonder what the life expectancy of African Americans (not Afro-Mexicans) is in Mexico? Intuition would tell me that life expectancy for African Americans in Mexico is probably close to that of Hawaii because, like Hawaii, Mexico is absent of the most rabid types of white nationalism that exists in most other parts of mainland USA.

In the US the focus of white supremacy is on African Americans, the focus of it in Mexico does not seem to be on African Americans (US citizens of African descent). I think that African Americans in Mexico generally have more economic resources compared to Native Mayans, because of that, the type and level of discrimination maybe different. The focus of white supremacy in Mexico is probably on the Native Americans and not African Americans like it is in the USA. I would guess that the life expectancy of Native Americans in Mexico is probably shorter than that of the Mexicans who identify as "white".

I am a teacher and am thinking of moving to Mexico. I can't afford to live near any small cities or large cities in the U.S. I am originally from Chicago and everything has been gentrified and is expensive. I am planning on visiting Mexico this summer and possibly moving in the fall. I would like to visit Puebla City and Queretero. I have watched your channel for a few years now and I always hear good things about Queretero. I am looking for somewhere that is safe, I teach in the south side of Chicago so I am coming from a violent area. I would also like a place that is affordable and a place to be able to get out into nature. Anyway, I am going to visit these two cities this summer and if you have any other cities or suggestions I'd love to hear them. Anne o en espanol Anna, preferio Anna.😀

If you don't mind about hot weather then Mérida would be the best place.(But is far from Puebla and Querétaro ) Or Querétaro. Avoid Celaya Guanajuato. Give a look to Xalapa in Veracruz. It's a cultural city with a foreign school . 4.30 - 5 hours from Mexico City. And Puebla is in the middle . ¡ Buena suerte !!!

Good on you for doing a video like this. I lived in Mexico for 11 years, but no longer. While many people can visit the country multiple times and nothing happens, (good for them) , there is an astounding amount of crime. It's either out of foreign sight, or many foreigners are just simply oblivious, or prefer to not believe it. The monthly homocide numbers of 2-3k should speak volumes. I have seen sH*t happen even in Puerto Vallarta and the very near surrounding areas, cars with boarded up steel windows with shooters poking their weapons out, circling for a couple of hours, very near the main areas, or the marines going into Ixtapa on a fairly regular basis. In Guadalajara, I unfortunately witnessed the dozen or so bodies being hung from the Arcos de Milenio, in 2011 I think. there are thousands of things kept away from the foreign-friendly press. I could go on and on. Switch on the local news and it's a bit of a shit-show, any local person will acknowledge it. Having said that, one only hopes for the best.

As usual, this is a great video with a lot of good information. However, it made me laugh when you were talking about how many people do not know what it means to eat healthy, because I have seen you eat and drink things that are definitely deleterious, including sugary drinks, desserts, fried food, organ meats that are not organic or sustainably raised, and so on. That aside, your videos are informative and enjoyable - well worth watching for anyone interested in moving or visiting Mexico. I would add one comment about life expectancy, which is that the statistic does not reflect quality of life and stress levels. So many people in the US suffer from medical treatment for major diseases; they are full of pharmaceuticals and operations are mostly unnecessarily performed because there is such a big economic impetus to operate.

There's a stat from the WHO that's something like "years of healthy life". The years of healthy life between the US and Mexico are virtually identical. Regarding my eating habits, yes, I eat some foods that aren't good for me, sometimes I drink alcohol, sometimes I eat processed foods, sometimes I eat fast food, and sometimes I have too much sugar. I try to eat reasonably healthy but still splurge from time to time.
