@SKC1935 жыл бұрын
Gil C Yeah, you should. We started having earthquakes, well noticeable anyway, several years ago here in Oklahoma. So I was never used to it then all of a sudden. I would never live in California due to that. Well, other reasons too but mainly earthquakes. We already have tornadoes! Of course, there’s a running joke that when we hear the tornado siren we go outside & look at the sky. Lol I know I’m guilty of it but I’m 65 so I’ve had my whole life to be used to them.

I'm just amazed by how the Mexican people are able to get earthquake warnings over a minute in advance from it happening. Not even here in San Francisco, CA there's such a nice system that would save so many lives. I'm guessing part of the reason must be because my city is pretty much over the seismic fault so we are always the first ones to notice when earthquakes happen.
@larrote64676 жыл бұрын

We're sort of used to the alarm. Though it's now nerve wracking due to the recent Sept 19 earthquake, people will now stampede toward the exits when they listen it, like you see in the video. I live in a 3rd floor and when the alert went off, *everyone* evacuated the whole building real quick. The last residents were already out by the time the actual quake hit us. Scary as hell, as this one was moderately strong, though nothing like the one from September.

Mexico is well prepared for this type of earthquake events, much better than in the United States, I live in California, where earthquakes hit with no notice and there is no general alarm and its quite disorganized, although we have earthquake drills and preparedness.

Hi, My wife is in Oaxaca City. She was at Oxxo when it happened, everyone went out to the street. She did not seem to think it was that bad, but things were really shaking there. No damage or anything noticeable which is a surprise and good! You guys should really visit Oaxaca. She loves it and the food is amazing, very cheap and the mountain hiking and treks are incredible in that area!
@alfonsotorres45806 жыл бұрын
Jason Russell I was surprised too nobody was injured or killed, and there was only material damage in the epicenter in the nearest town in Oaxaca, which is a good thing thank goodness.😥 And please try to stay contact with you're wife, my mom and twin sister are in Mexico too, and they told me everything is fine when I got their call yesterday night.

Sorry to see what you went through. I know it can be a bit scary, especially if you're not accustomed to them (I'm originally from Canada), but if you're thinking about spending a long time in Mexico, you should get used to being shaken up once in awhile by earthquakes. 'Temblores' (as Mexicans call them) are as common in Central and South Mexico as Apple Pie to Americans. Word of advice, after having experienced 3 or 4 'big ones' in Mexico I've lost most of my fears to them. Scared yes, but I don't panic anymore. Wish you good luck and happy traveling. Cheers

Good for you. Although I think the problem here is that she suffers from anxiety, so not sure if she can control it. I've noticed chronic anxiety is quite common in the US and Canada.

I completely get Güera's reaction, is normal. Nevertheless, you were at a very new and modern building, designed to resist much bigger earthquakes (unlikely to ever happen), meaning it will move like crazy, *precisely* to keep itself from breaking and falling down - it would be scary but you'd be pretty safe. Goyo, you handled it very well for you and your wife, that's how! Get this: strong and long as it was, there were ZERO victims and very little damage (in CDMX this is, I wonder of Oaxaca status…). Please get to know safety procedures at home. Good to know you're ok.

I've been to Mexico City a couple of times and as a matter of fact I was there visiting over a week ago, I was just chillin with a friend at my Airbnb having a beer then I heard that alarm in the distance. The funny thing is she was born and raised in Mexico City and I heard it before her. She told me to grab my phone and shoes and get the out of the building:I didn't even have time to put my shoes on just left with my socks lol. I was on the 4th floor so it was easy to get out to the street but hearing that damn alarm was nerve racking and a bit terrifying. Thankfully after a few minutes nothing had happened so no disaster story but boy was I on edge. I have experienced mild earthquakes in Nicaragua and Panama but nothing vicious like the kind that occur in Mexico City. I abosulutely love Mexico City but the earthquakes and the fact that can happen anytime keeps me from living there. Sometimes those alarms go off and it's an error but I'd rather not deal with that in my daily life. I know I sound like a softy lol. Outside of that it's such an amazing city.
@gobir_roz3 жыл бұрын
Yes it sucks, though it is generally not nearly as bad. Thankfully we have this alarm system that really saves a lot of lives, and we have some of the best engineers and architects in the world our buildings (at least the new ones) and particularily our skyscrapers are extra resistant to them.
@crimsonpetals13476 жыл бұрын
Mexico City is the safest place to be during an earthquake. alarms let you know before the earthquake hits. I believe you have one minute or a minute and a half to get away from any danger. I have lived through A 71/2 to 8 Richter scale earthquake in California.
@dannhymir96784 жыл бұрын
@God Bless America California has a lot of earthquakes, its just that most are small to not be felt widely. Ocassionally a 5, 6, and 7.0 pop up, but usually in less populated areas.

Chile and Japan are safer. They have better antiseismic tecnology and they are more strict with the technology that every building has to have.

Glad u r OK. Just a piece of advise for Hil, try not to face time your family when you are in that kind of situation, you are only going to worry your loved ones. Your reaction was great, if this ever happens again go outside as quick as possible without panicking and find a safe spot, away from poles, buildings and power lines.

I'm visiting Mexico City.. actually not too far from where you all are at in this video at my hotel Hotel Del Angel on the 10th floor.. I had no idea what the alarm even sounded like so I didn't even really listen for it.. I probably heard it and passed it off at traffic noise as I'm right here by the reforma area.. I saw the light on the ceiling though go back and forth and I freaked out.. I never ran down 10 flights of stairs as fast as I did that evening... I don't guess there was any damage or deaths though from this particular earthquake in Mexico City.. Not sure if anyone in Oaxaca where it originated died or any building collapses.. very scary stuff.. but I know what the alarm sounds like though.. so I'm good to go if it sounds... such as it did 1am Monday morning...
@jorgemichellerodriguezrami89666 жыл бұрын
WRONG. You should NEVER run down the stairs. Next time, find a safe spot and remain there if you can't get out of the building within 15 seconds of the alarm going off.

Now you have a complete Mexico City experience! An earthquake that strong after the September earthquakes surely made people even more on edge. Completely understandable reactions from people that haven't experienced that kind of thing. I remember at 4yrs old waking up in '85 to my father watching the destruction on television. Then my kindergartner school was closed for a couple of weeks while they made our classes walk to another affiliated school. Then the intermittent power outages and of course, the aftershocks. How much of that did you guys experience? Then years later as more earthquakes happened, my schools had us trained to follow to exactitude the evacuation procedures. I remember a particular time my deskmate had a horrified look when one started, and we had to go from the third floor of the school to the schoolyard. Then blackouts and aftershocks. Ah como exraño México, pero el DF más. I am really loving this channel, these vlog videos, you guys are awesome! Thank you for making me experience my birth city through your eyes.

There was an earth quake and we were on vacation in PV. Being on the 15th floor, my wife and daughter were sleeping. Around midnight, it lasted 30sec. I grabbed my daughter and we ran to the hallway. No one came out of there rooms. So we went down stairs to the hotel lobby and talked to the hotel workers. The worker told us that all the gringos ran out of the lobby bar as if the hotel was on fire. The workers were use to this. Part of living in Mexico.
