Lead is pretty inert. Don’t suck on it, or put it in a place it’ll be worn away or aerosolized somehow, you will be fine. You could probably find a way to stabilize it to increase its resistance to weathering with magic, or special coatings for the outside of your bricks or inner parts of materials.

Odd that steel wasn't listed in the video. Still lead should not be a problem. If the DM rules silver as being too dense you know have something to do with your silver coins. Lead is only a problem when it enters the body. Lead based paint was bad because it was on the outside of the walls and was worn down into a breathable dust. Lead lining inside the walls, like insulation, will only be a problem when the wall is opened up. Even then; if not exposed to the elements to wear it down will be magnitudes less poisonous than paint...

The living tissue rule always raises a couple of questions for me. First, can an adventurer in the Material Plane punch something on the Ethereal Plane? Second, do undead count? In other words, can someone on the Ethereal move through a zombie? A vampire? A lich?
@juliogouvea9447
@juliogouvea9447 3 жыл бұрын
Unless you are a high-level monk (when your fists are considered magic weapons), it seems to me it is impossible to hit an ethereal creature with your knuckles or even regular weapons. Only magic weapons, or maybe special metal weapons (lead, gold, adamantine, obdurium???), certain spells (force damage) might harm ethereal creatures while you are at the Prime. And provided that you can see the ethereal creature to direct your attack or spell (truesight works). Most of PCs might not be able to see it. That's why ghosts and other ethereal creatures can be very dangerous to low-level characters. I do not think that this rule should prevent ethereal creatures from passing through undead since they are animated by necromantic magic (not really alive) and feed on the corpse. souls or lifeforce of their living victims. But who really knows?

@guyatanosavia8487
@guyatanosavia8487 3 жыл бұрын
I would make the argument that if Become Ethereal prevents living tissue from connecting with you, it would also prevent dense materials from doing the same as that is described as in tandem with one another. If it does not prevent living tissue from interacting with you, then it doesn't matter that the dragon is gold. It's living tissue, thus it would hit the adventurers regardless. I hope I didn't poop on your parade ): I just wanted to point the logic out to someone before someone else does at your tables

I think it is more about your will, the method of movement in the ethereal, than the density. Density, extreme density, merely enacts its own unconscious will to "be where it is", while you, living there, create your own space that you exist in, as a solid thing, in the ethereal.

@@craigbolton2231 Yeah. That being said, though, sage advice can help you understand the math and balancing of the game. On realism and verisimilitude, as well as D&D lore, they don't seem to have a grip. That being said, it is important to inform your players of any changes you make before the game. I don't think 5 feet of fog cloud should block all vision entirely, but someone who picked that spell might be awfully disappointed if you spring the change on him after he's already spent the spell slot and made it one of his known spells. That would be unfair. As usual, communication is key.
@craigbolton2231
@craigbolton2231 3 жыл бұрын
@@jonathandoe1367 aye it's good for some stuff. Its specifically just their rules as intended help that I find annoying. But aye rule discussion between the table is important. For the fog cloud spell specifically I'd assume a fog can be thick enough to block vision regardless of how much area it covers. Density over area. But even as the dm for my group usually I make sure everyone sees it as fair so if they think a rules bullshit and it's not integral to balance or anything then I'll scrap it
@jonathandoe1367
@jonathandoe1367 3 жыл бұрын
@@craigbolton2231 For the fog cloud, I was talking about how in previous editions, you could see the squares adjacent to you if you were in midst of the fog, and anyone outside could see anything on the outside edge (i.e. you could see through 5 feet of the fog). I think this makes more sense, but 5e decided to simplify the spell by having it work like a brick wall or the darkness spell. The problem is that I've seen discussion boards with DMs who kept assumming it worked like 3e, even though it doesn't. It would be a nasty surprise to learn that the spell you just casted won't stop you from taking an opportunity attack, or doesn't stop line of sight from the beholder's eye rays. So, yeah, kindly remember that newer players might not assume the game plays like an edition they've never seen before. :)

Great video! Another worthwhile mention is that, unlike the astral plane, at the ethereal plane PCs still need to feed and hydrate. However, on the ethereal plane, it is very difficult (or maybe impossible) to find any food or water, besides those created by magical means (if it works), food/water brought with you, or foraging for an ethereal creature dinner (and maybe dying on the process). So staying too long on the ethereal can be very dangerous, especially if you do not know how to get back to the Prime.

Wow, I was working on a new setting, a prehistoric sort of thing, and the timing for this video is incredible. My idea was that in the beginning there are three goddesses, or guardian spirits, that helped create the world. I imagined that there was this central bit of land, a continent, existing in the nothingness. I stuck a crazy tall tower in the middle with the goddesses on top and the rivers that flow from the center over the edge of this land create the mist of the Ethereal. There is a bit more to it than that but I'm trying to keep this short. I was stuck trying to think of a way to move the world forward from my Idea and this helped get my gears moving. Thanks

Crazy character idea: A Derro character, meaning a member of a grey skinned, dwarf-like race that is known to be absolutelly batshit crazy, that has lengthy conversations with thin air, so nobody believes their claim to be totally sane. During the Story, it is revealed, that they are, in fact, totally sane, but cursed to be permanently able to see into the ethereal plane. When they seemed absent minded and said something about "flying fish, dancing around a certain character" they were meaning it, when they talked to the air, they had conversations with different denizens of the ethereal plane, one of which is their friend since early childhood. This should be accompanied by this character to being able to, for example, see through simple illusions or spot invisible passageways or characters/enemies every now and then. Maybe they suddenly talk to the invisible rogue, like they were visible, possibly blowing their disguise, because they just saw them and forgot that the rogue was supposed to "not be there". Although this would probably be hard to play and needs a lot of working with the DM, I think this could be an interesting character and could lead to some funny situations, if done right.

One of my projects is a homebrew race of "half-ghosts" who have souls that didn't quite bond to them properly. They take a lot of inspiration from japanese type ghosts and ghost stories. I feel that sort of thing is a relatively good way to connect the material plane and the ethereal plane. This race is naturally able to navigate the ethereal but it's a bit weird still. They do it primarily through spirit trees, though actual "villages" of them are unusual as they typically show up like plane-touched races, but they can breed true with one another.

"See invisibility" lets you see invisible things AND lets you see into the ethereal plane. "Misty step" let's you teleport to a space you can see, that is also within 30 feet from you ("vortex warp" will allow you to teleport your friends)... Since the material and the ethereal overlap at the boarder ethereal, one SHOULD be able to combine these two low level spells to travel to the ethereal plane. Your solid body automatically becomes ethereal when teleported to the ethereal plane. That part is just d&d lore. So, of you all didn't want to wait until you had 7th lvl spells before going to the ghost realm... There ya go!

I mean to hit a creature on the ethereal with say Eldritch Blast would first require you to target that creature. Next also the range of the spell would probably have to be changed to "sight" rather than a integer. Remember that technically each plane is an infinite distance from each other, this is true with the border ethereal as well. A wall from a wall of force can be seen to be doing at least one of two things. One it is intruding in some way into the border ethereal. Or creature from the border ethereal can interact with it but not the other way around. Now if you have a force AoE go off I can understand possibly there being some kind of effect on a creature on the ethereal. I am not sure if they would be damaged though or just displaced.

I think the idea is that when you dream you are creating a little universe of your own. And creating worlds is an ethereal plane kind of thing.
@doubleg281

@@jacopobertolotti5025 ya, but that means your dreams are physical locations. That complicates things when you have spells like gate and demiplane where you could potentially bring your dream creations to the material plane. The astral plane already has mechanics that dieing in the plane dosen't kill you just like in dreams. Dreams are a much better outer plane than an inner plane

It seems to me that, if you would rule that silver would also be considered something that is solid to those in the ethereal realm, then the cheapest way to attack a creature there would be to use the same silvered weapons you would use on a were-creature.

It is worth noting you are literally on another plane, thus spells only reach you if they reach other planes. I quote: "While on the Ethereal Plane, you can only affect and be affected by other creatures on that plane. Creatures that aren't on the Ethereal Plane can't perceive you and can't interact with you, unless a special ability or magic has given them the ability to do so. You ignore all objects and effects that aren't on the Ethereal Plane, allowing you to move through objects you perceive on the plan you originated from." So you can stand on the material plane, casting dispel magic, or put down a hundred glyps, or run circles around a person with Antimagic field on yourself, but all you'll accomplish is to shove the ethereal creature around by running into it. So stick those glyphs in the border ethereal, or you just make your home needlessly dangerous to yourself. However, if you get your Etherealness or Blink or such dispelled by someone else who is also on the ethereal plane, then you go right back to the material plane. Also, keep in mind that solid objects don't outright kill you. You take force damage equal to twice the number of feet you are moved... so most commoners would die from being moved just a few feet. So you may find yourself suddenly under a lot of solid bedrock and then emerge on the material plane as "chunky salsa" or "red mist" following your sudden extreme acceleration and deceleration upon your return to the material plane. Exceptions apply, but magic needs to be cast on the same plane (as of 5th edition) to do anything to the creature on the ethereal plane. This was not the case in earlier editions... but the universe has been restructured a few times since then. :) Edit: I love planar lore and get into it with my characters or as a DM as soon as I can. The hype for the Deep Ethereal lore is real. I love playing with demiplanes! Be it with my characters, or with my villains and NPC's as I DM. Keep it up MrRhexx. This series is your best yet! :)

Hello, MrRhexx. Love your content. I've watched every one of your D&D lore videos and have them all in a playlist that I always keep up to date. I'm also writing a D&D crossover story and I need a point of clarification: Are there multiple versions of the Outer Planes for every crystal orb in the Phlogiston, or do they all share the one? And by extension, does that mean that an Andro/Gynosphinx could theoretically move between orbs via the Outer Planes using their dimensional travel? I'm trying to come up with a way to get my characters from Earth's universe (which, as you stated, is in a Crystal Orb) to Toril.

No, the Outer and Inner Planes are the same. It’s only the Feywild, Shadowfell, and Border Ethereal that are world-specific. And the answer for the second is "theoretically yes".

While there was a lot of information here Im not sure i go answers to the following. Can you interact with other beings on the ethereal plane? Do you need food, water, sleep etc? Can you die? Anything there that can kill you? Some material suggests the Astral Plane is the place of dreams so im a little confused. But the real question all of these are designed to help me resolve Is.... Is the Ethereal Plane a good place for a village of people to be stuck in unstuck from time (like a 1000 years type deal)? or should i look to one of the other planes?
