I’m binge watching lots of thrips and pest videos and I figured I would add 2 tips for everyone searching for pest solutions….. Using one of those sticky lint rollers on the leaves to get pests and eggs off of certain plants and then second tip is putting nice clean sandbox sand on the whole top layer of the soil and it will smother and kill certain pests and stop the breeding cycle. Good luck everyone ♥️

With the sandbox, do you mean put a layout of sand above the soil?

This is my method and so far it is working really well for thrips. You need to come at thrips from all angles and kill thrips in every stage of life 1) quarantine any infested plants to a different room (ideally place plants on a hard surface or on a trash bag, not carpet also know when a plant just isn't worth saving, throw it away in a plastic bag and put in outdoor garbage (I like to still spray it with a mixture of half rubbing alcohol and half water to prevent outdoor plants from being infested as well 2) hand pick any leaves that are yellowing whether you see thrips on them or not and continue to do so as needed, you can also wipe thrips off healthy leaves with a 3:1 mixture of water and 70% rubbing alcohol using a cotton ball or small towel 3) blast the leaves and stems with water in the bathtub or outside with hose to wash as many thrips off as possible 4) once leaves are dry spray entire plant focusing on undersides of leaves especially near the bottom and stems as well as new growth with a store bought pesticide spray for thrips or a homemade mixture of neem oil and insecticidal soap, 2 tsps of each mixed into 16 ounces of water is my recipe, sometimes I also add 12 drops of 100% pure peppermint essential oil per 16 ounces of water. Make sure to shake spray bottle well before spraying and as needed as the oil needs to be mixed into the soapy water not settled on top. Always prepare a new batch every time you spray. Spray every 3-4 days until infestation is gone. 5) add Diatomaceous earth in a thin even layer on top of the soil and reapply after every watering. 6) Blue sticky traps are best but yellow work too, lay them on top of pot parallel to the soil or place right in the center of the plant as close to the soil as you can get 6) keep area clean, make sure you are wiping down areas around the plant with rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide often, table, floor the pot they are in etc. Don't leave any soil or leaves laying around make sure to dispose of them in the outdoor garbage immediately and wash your hands after handling infested plants 7) I will also use a freshly mixed 3:1 mixture of 3% hydrogen peroxide and water as a soil drench when the plant needs watering (don't use this if the plant is bone dry, give it a drink of plain water first, wait a few minutes and then completely soak all of the soil with hydrogen peroxide and water mixture, only do this once or twice it will kill good things in the soil as well. This mixture only works if the hydrogen peroxide has not been open for more than 3 months and you use the mixture quickly after mixing it up. This way you are covering every part of the thrips life cycle and I guarantee it will work for pretty much any other plant infestation you can think of indoors or out.

I'd suggest mites as preventative or last on the trips management cure. You need to remove the adults with yellow sticky sheets and spraying the leaves/plant. But also treat soil with BTI in mosquito dunks in all your waterings. Use 1/8th of a circle to a few gallons of water. Spray leaves every 3nor 4 days!! Alternate products! If you have thripsnfor months you probably have a bit problem and mites alone won't cut it. I do a few weeksnof spray and waters with bti first THEN bring mites as the sprays kill the mites too mostly. Been there..trust me..

@sarahxia29722 жыл бұрын
There are different types of thrips. The black kind (Impatiens) have no life cycle in the soil at all so dia earth would be pointless. The cream type of thrip (Frankliniella) do have one life cycle in the soil but the dia earth is unreliable, and most oftentimes kills less than only half of the emerging thrips from soil. And with the thrips being asexual and producing at a fast rate, especially the frankliniella, there is no point wasting time sprinkling stuff in the soil. Kill the adults and any crawlers thru spray then beneficials on the plant. If more emerge, that means more eggs hatched. So you must dump the soil and repot with fresh soil, then repeat the process. Use insecticide that contains Spinosad.

It's true food grade diatomaceous earth only works when dry, but it holds its structure. So when it drys it's once again effective. I mix it with water and spray it in hard to reach places so it goes exactly where I need it and i dont have to worry about breathing it in. Once it drys it'll do its thing. You could spray it on leaves too but it leaves a layer of powder on the leaves when it drys that I don't like. I also mix it in when I prepare a batch of soil to get anything living or hatching in it. It kills all Insects so be careful where you use it!

What ratio of neem oil to water would you recommend for thrips? I I currently mix around 1tsp neem oil with 1tsp of washing up liquid/hand soap and then dilute in roughly 1litre of water. Is this strong enough?
@charlottecobain69862 жыл бұрын
Depends on the quality of your neem oil, some are more pure/higher quality/better than others. Make sure it’s cold pressed (any other type doesn’t have the ingredient that helps with pests). I’ve seen people mix a stronger solution to use for wiping the leaves. Instead of using dish soap, consider switching to Castile soap since dish soaps are actually detergents (yes, even blue dawn soap). On a chemical level, detergents are harsher on the plant tissue which causes more stress on the plants and thereby potentially increases pest pressure and lengthens recovery time.

I love your channel. You are so engaging and knowledgeable and clearly LOVE plants. Do you use nematodes and diatomaceous earth to kill and prevent pests? I had a really bad infestation of fungal gnats. It was so bad I could see the larvae crawling on the top of the soil and in the bottom of the cover pot, mega gross! Not to mention the irritation of the gnats buzzing round your face. However I heard that nematodes which are little bugs themselves but are completely safe for plants. These friendly bugs like to feast on fungal gnat larvae and eggs. Nematodes are completely natural and safe for plants, pets and children. I also discovered dusting the bottom of the cover pot or saucer with diatomaceous earth helps to kill any of the larvae that drops down through the pot. Diatomaceous earth is a natural substance and very abundant on Earth. Again diatomaceous earth is safe to use in your homes. It's interesting that you said you replace the top layer of the soil when you buy a new plant. In my experience I find that many pests live in the bottom of the pot and drop down into the saucer. Whenever I water my plants I always check inside the cover pot or saucer to see if I can find any squirming larvae or other dubious looking bugs that will have to be washed away.

It's such a long story but I was traveling and left my plants w a friend who overwatered them then over fertilized them (so I got my plants back with root rot and fertilizer burn) and then somewhere along the line thrips came into the picture. I've tried everything for the last 9 mos, starting with hydrogen peroxide bc of the root rot, then changing all the soil twice. Then ladybugs and nematodes a few times. The thrips are a widespread problem now over most of my collection. I think now that it's spring I'll be taking them outside and treating them with biological pest control. I ordered some sticky traps. I'm so bummed about this! But also, I'm pretty sure the issue is thrips and not something else like mosaic virus, so I guess it's good to know what the problem is. I got a very small dragon fruit plant about a year ago for my birthday, it was growing like crazy and very happy. A few months ago I started to notice sticky liquid on some of the vines and the stems dying in isolated areas. I didn’t know what it was but the plant was still growing lots so I just thought it might be a dragon fruit plant thing lmao. Then I noticed some tiny black specks but they didn’t seem to move around at all so I just thought it was dried pieces of the stem sheaths from new growth, again I ignored it. This went on for MONTHS and I legit didn’t really see anything wrong 😑. Then a few days ago I decided to give my dragon fruit plant a really big chop because it was a little bit wild and the dead patches had spread up several of the stems. While I was doing that I noticed lots more of the little black specks and saw some of them moving around when I picked them up. I filled a shallow tub with soapy, lukewarm water and dunked the leaves of the plant in and let is soak. Unfortunately I have a few plants in that room, all of which I found only a few thrips on but I’m sure there are more. However the worst part is that I have a GIANT spider plant, which is hard enough to clean even when it’s small but mine is about a foot and a half tall and 2 feet in diameter plus, like, 20 little babies still attached. Any tips on how to clean it? I’m already designating kind of 2 rooms to a TON of plants that all have fungus gnats, I’ve basically given trying to eradicate them all, I figure a certain amount of fungus gnats are just part of owning plants. I. Just keeping all the plants with thrips where they are since they all have it and I don’t want my other plants to have fungus gnats AND thrips.

Same with my spider plant, I'm trying hard to save it right now. Did you manage to save it?
@shawn-oldaccountl6748 Жыл бұрын
@@kaja599 no, not really, I probabilities could have but it got to the point where it started causing me a lot of stress, which is not what hobbies are supposed to do, so I just ended up composting it. Thrips are very persistent and it can be hard to eliminate them entirely, the easiest thing to do is just to drench the entire plant repeatedly in insecticide every time you see a thrip or an egg or damage on a brand new leaf. Spider plants are really hard because of all the leaves and crevices, other things like monesteras or pothos can just have their leaves wiped down but not spider plants. Depending on how huge your plant is, grab a tub, even like one of those giant plastic storage containers, fill it with lukewarm water and add dish soap to it (just kind of eye ball it compared to the amount of water, it should be bubbly but not heaping), and then just dunk your entire plant in it. You can tip the plant upside down and just drench the foliage if you are scared of over watering your plant, otherwise put the entire pot in as well because you also want to kill all the bigs and eggs that are in the soil. Keep the plant in the water for a minute or so before you take it out, just lay out a towel or something and let it air dry, you can set up a fan or something if you need to since that will help it dry faster which will avoid mildew and rot on the leaves and can also help to deter fungus gnats. Just rinse and repeat, it can go on for a LONG time. If it ever reaches the point where you don’t see any bugs, keep putting insecticide in the plant’s water or on the soil whenever you water for a while, just to really make sure that there are no eggs that survived. Good luck.

I always keep them isolated for at least a few weeks after the initial treatment and monitor them super closely. Even when I put them back in with my others I try to keep them as separate as I can for a while 💚

Very new to houseplants and giving it a go. What about fruit fly type bugs im not sure if it is indeed a fruit fly but that’s exactly what it looks like😩

Maybe it had just had dinner, or was vegan, or no sense of taste or smell from covid, heard cats can get covid, so why not ladybirds !

I know, I'm glad someone mentioned this! I don't kill ANYthing....so it has been very hard for me. You kind of just have to make a choice...your plant or the pests 😔

😂🤣😂 I’m the complete opposite, I feel joy in killing them because in my mind I’m freaking out hoping they don’t spread to everything else I have.

Plants out. Dirt in trash. Soapy water bath of all newly naked plants. Rinse. Wash pots with soapy water. Rinse and then repot in brand new, never opened soil.

Fighting pests with their natural predators is one of the best ways to fight them! Nematodes for example work wonders against fungus gnats!

Do nematodes also work in Mineral soil?
@vicaraven916Ай бұрын
@@karinrei8497 they should work as long as there’s soil in the mix, i doubt they work in a 100% mineral substrate

i just got a new plant around a month ago and didn't know what signs to look for with pests and I genuinely think it has spider mites mealy bugs AND thrips. there's webs, white fuzzy buts and thrips all over that and my monster next to it I could cry LOL. I will try this method and look up tips for the other bugs too, wish me luck🥲

Don't buy plants but instead buy seeds and grow them hydroponically = no pests. Using soil indoors just isn't sanitary unless you'd sterilize the soil and then add nutrients. Plants + Soil = Bugs sooner or later. Also one treatment is never enough, you gotta go HAM on those plants for a week, once every day at least. Over-watering is not a problem hydroponically and with soil-plants just remove all the soil as you'll probably need to cleanse the roots as well.

Your thrips sound nasty. The ones I got cause my chili plants to ocasionally lose a leaf but the plants grow faster than that. I've had the thrips since a year now and the chili plants seem to handle them by themselves. And the thrips aren't even interested in my other house plants right next to the chilis. I still would obviously prefer to not have the thrips but getting rid of them sounds like a lot of effort. It's probably easier to just grow new chilis next year
