I am 75 and battled with this condition since young. 4 surgeries later, I have the benefit of hindsight. Whilst constipation plays a part in weakening the bowel wall, I do not agree that a high fibre diet is the answer. All my life until 3 years ago I have eaten a high fibre diet. The strange thing is that when one has a bowel op to remove abcesses or even parts of the colon, one is tube fed. Dietiticians oversee this process and give contrary advice to doctors. Dietiticians advocate a low fiber diet, or if eating high fibre to run the food through a high powered blender first. High fiber foods are more likely than ever to get caught in the pouches and rot, especially ran and raisins and other fruits with skins!! . Use Movicol, deglyccerised licorice, aloe juice, prune juice MSM etc to keep regular. Toughen up your bowel wall with L- glutamine or bone broth, cabbage, sauerkraut or cabbage juice. Use collagen capsules too. Reduce inflammation of with tumeric or a short course of cortisone when things reach crisis point. Stay off the antibiotics and take probiotics, especially the cheapest and best one sauerkraut, but put it in the blender with other salads. Dont eat raw salads without blending them. The fiber catches in the diverticuli. Use dried garlic capsules to fight infection and candida ( which also compromises the the bowel wall.) Steer clear of nuts, seeds and fruits with skins unless soaked and put in the Nutribullet first. Eat Greek yoghurt or maas.

I’ve always LOVED the fiber foods and have not ever suffered from constipation! Over 65 and I cannot eat the salads, veggies, citrus fruits, etc. and I’ve had episodes of diverticulitis off and on regularly for the last six years! Chicken, Turkey and pork are the meats we eat. It’s a tricky condition…..sometimes a food is fine, the next time it’s a painful problem!

This condition is caused by gut dysbiosis (bad bacteria overtaking your colon and infecting the diverticula). Get some kefir made preferably from grass fed cows with billions of probiotics, such as Maple Hill kefir (I get mine from Publix). And get a chewable acidophilis probiotic supplement and another one I use is by Mason that includes acidophilus and bifidus with a prebiotic (food for the cultures). Also take 3 or 4 teaspoons of ORGANIC extra virgin olive oil per day (I take morning, noon and night). It destroys h. pylori and other bad bacteria in the gut without destroying the good ones like antibiotics do. This (the olive oil) needs to be done for about 2-4 weeks at least. I'd keep doing the probiotics indefinately. Maybe taper off to just 1 capsule and 1 serving of kefir per day after you are fully healed. Since I started doing the things listed above, my diverticulitus symptoms stopped completely. I got a huge, noticeable improvement after the very first day of drinking the kefir. I drink about 1/4th a cup in the morning and 1/2 cup at night before bed. Try it. It worked wonders for me!! I couldn't even drink water without a flare up before I started this regimen. My flare up went on for 6 weeks with no signs of stopping until I got the kefir, probiotics and organic extra virgin olive oil. After 2 weeks of doing that, I was and am eating whatever I want again. I ate Bojangles fried chicken and biscuits on Saturday and Sunday I had a ribeye, steamed broccoli and steak fries...; ) “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food” - HIppocrates

Sounds more like severe ulcerative colitis instead of diverticulitis which has pouches...you can have both... severe ulcerative colitis has to do with lots of stress causing the inflammation of the intestines which can produce diarrhea, mucousy stools lots of pain I had the same thing as soon as the divorce was over it stopped I was literally bleeding from everywhere due to severe stress, ulcers ...try to stay as stress-free as possible... I know it's hard nowadays but that helps along with I drank cold pressed aloe vera juice which is in the Bible which also heals what's inside of your body... ulcers which can be caused from stress to plus your intestines but try cold pressed 100% aloe vera and you can add it to a drink instead of just drinking it straight out ...good luck

While stress certainly doesn't help, fasting was the only thing that seemed to work for me. Fasting also cured my leg swelling from leaky blood vessels. I fasted 4 days and even 3 years later, both never came back. 😁

I eat mostly grass fed red meat, avocado and fermented foods and don’t have any issues with mine! I was diagnosed at 23 and I’m now 40 trust me when I say it’s all diet!

I believe a great place to start is chewing your food more thus allowing saliva to lubricate the food. Eat sauerkraut / pickled vegetables and balance in the diet. I thought being a vegetarian guaranteed great health and after a colonoscopy revealing slight diverticulitis I know realize further precautions are advantageous. Most important is pray to Jesus for intercession through the Holy Spirit to have discernment in your diet and listen to what you know is the best way to live healthy with clarity of mind.

No dairy No or little meat. He never saw one case of diverticulitis, no colon cancer no heart disease no kidney disease no diabetes, no breast cancer, no gallbladder disease, No MS.. He should be a house hold name. Further backed up by the fact restricting animal fat halts early stage Multiple Sclerosis severity and frequency in 95 percent of the cases. The single best treatment to date. With only mild disability 34 years later. But if they added just 8 grams of saturated fat per day it was associated with a striking increase in disability and tripling the death rate. Treating MS with the Swank diet. Even this video alludes to the fact more fiver no red meat. Its all meat. Its all the dairy Most of the advice is how to limit the poison that are known to cause disease. I’m trying to go vegan but it’s so hard to stick to a diet and not eat red meats and other bad foods. I had some meat earlier today and now I’m having bad pains in my right side. To anyone out there having pains or have diverticulitis you got this!!! Don’t give up on saying healthy cuz it can come back and worse case you’ll get sepsis and that could even cause death. I’m 32 and was diagnosed in September. Ughhhh I’ve switch to Whole Foods plant based. I’ve been doing pretty well. Sometimes I get these small random pains but my GI doc prescribed a medication for that. I’ve also lost 10 lbs since being diagnosed and switch over to wfpb. How have you been doing?

I was diagnosed with Diverticulitis when I was 22, so I do have to question age factors in many. I do get pains and flareups, I eat as many good foods as I can. It makes me wonder if it's possible Diverticulitis can be genetic. My dad was diagnosed when he was 30. We are both OK but neither one of us lets are guards down and eat red meat etc.

Interesting because I ate nothing but an enormous amount of fiber for years and was told to eat more. I was a strict vegan for years. I run and workout. Then was told to take fiber supplements. I am low body mass and weight. I ended up with this disease and infections. Your recommendations are the standard recommendations they gets pushed out over and over.

The reason everyone was slim and healthy back in the 40s-70s is because the milk, cheese, buttermilk, dairy products were ALIVE (not dead/pasteurized like today). I was told by my doctors to make sure I had a high fibre diet but I was vegan at the time and consumed a lot of fibre. They also said stop eating fibre once it begins as the fibre at that stage makes it worse. I have both keto and carnivore friends that claim that their gut issues improved so here I am totally confused again.

Good information, and I appreciated the risk factors broken down in an easy to follow format. I was diagnosed in 2009 when my first attack landed me in the hospital. Diet is fundamental, but I noticed that stress kicks it up, and I loved eating red meat, which had not occurred to me to cut back. I “managed” my attacks with antibiotics over the years, and thought I was doing well at it, until a few months ago. The recurring attacks damaged a section of my colon beyond repair, and I was living with constant low grade inflammation. That section was surgically removed last week, and I’m glad to be able to have a fresh start. For any newly diagnosed people here- don’t fall into complacency about reducing risk just because effective antibiotics are available to treat. There will come a time when they won’t be enough.

My 91 year old grandmother ignored her diverticulitis for her entire life.... she now lives with a fistula that has connected her colon, ovary, uterus and bladder. Every one of her siblings (5) all had colon resections...along with some of her nephews. Not much to do about it now because she's too weak to go through such a complicated surgery. Lived on carbs, and never ate fiber also didn't drink much in the way of water, and lived on Pepto...making herself constipated on purpose. Take care of your guts people, this condition is no fun.

@@jaysbakes37 probably! She did end up having the surgery, and has yet to change her diet. She did really well for a while, even after getting c-diff. But, now she’s complaining her stomach bothers her still. But if I try to get her to eat differently, she believes the food will make her sick. I just give her probiotics and hope for the best. She’s 92 now, and I suppose she’s not going to at least get to blockage or fistula stage again at this point in her life.

Good video. Was hospitalized this week with abdominal pain and tenderness and diagnosed with complicated diverticulitis (abscess). Got out of the hospital yesterday and watched videos all day trying to figure out how to avoid a future attack. I unfortunately have a strong family history. This is my first attack (69 y/o tomorrow) so guess I can count my blessings it didn't start until now. I've never been sick in my life so this has been quite the eye opener. Been on liquid (water, broth, coffee in morning, and tea) for 2 days now, re lower left abdominal pain - it was a 9 when the pain started - found various diverticulitis videos. Today, is a 2 (pain factor); so it is working. BUT I’m hungry (tummy growling) - can I have scrambled eggs or mashed potatoes/sweet potatoes, those are soft?

Thanks for these videos . I like how the diagrams show what's going on in the large intestine it helps when you can actually see what's going on to understand things. I've recently been diagnosed with diverticulitis so just a matter of taking down information from these videos you have made & adding it from the information I've been given from when I went hospital. The thing is, not everyone will agree to this information as everyone is different, they have different health problems, different ways their body can cope with illnesses etc,etc. So just take what you can from these, get info from your own doctor or hospital or even dietician advise & do whatever suit YOU & YOUR body. From your fine explanations, my symptom matches diverticulitis: every few months there is a weak pain in the lower left, and a small sore bulge can be felt. When I press on it, a small "blop" sound and the pain goes away. I don't have any of the risk factors mentionen, except I am 68. In this video "bowel" and "bowel wall" is used interchangably with "colon", "colon wall" and abdominal wall I think, a bit confusing. I'll strengthen the stomach muscles and up the fiber. Thanks. You have a good presentation style, complete, to the point and without chit-chat and tangents - one can assimilate the message very quickly and easily.

Mine was found through a scan. The pain was so bad I had to go into the ER. I had to be treated with an antibiotic and a pain pill till they kicked in. I’ve learned to eat and avoid the things that brought on my symptoms. I can’t eat corn ever.But I have enjoyed eating things once again that make my gut feel so much better. I try different veggies that give me more fiber but I wear a pump for type 1 diabetes so my diet depends on my diabetes plus now being diagnosed with diverticulitis it is a challenge. Only one small flare up ( fingers crossed ) as I continue to figure this out to keep myself healthy…

Anything made with corn, including corn syrup, dextrose, maltodextrin, cellulose powder, corn starch, etc... stomach is in knots, gassy, runny nose, sick to my stomach and bowels. After accidentally eating something with a corn product, I have a severe reaction, and then it takes a day or so for my digestive track to normalize.

I was diagnosed with it 22 years ago and at the time my doc advised all sorts of changes to my diet. BUT…I love food so that didn’t work. I keep away from peanuts at all cost and berries. No raspberries, blackberries, boysenberries,loganberries etc. I am also a little wary of cooked sesame seeds. It’s the seeds that get stuck in the diverticula and start an infection. The worst infection I’ve had was after I moved to Australia. I ended up in hospital on IV antibiotics for 3 days and then followed by two weeks of oral antibiotics ( a blend of two different types). Not a great time by any stretch of the imagination. As soon as I feel the pain start I drink heaps of water and hook into the antibiotics straight away - my doctor gives me a prescription for both just to keep on hand in case. After my hospitalisation, the surgeon ( I didn’t have surgery) gave me a new product to try as an experiment for him. It is called K Fibre and is made locally in Queensland Australia. It’s made from sugar cane after all the sugar has been removed so essentially made from the waste material. It is has been a really great thing for me as I’ve had very few “attacks” since and only mild when I do. Incidentally, I believe my bowel issues are hereditary as my dad had it and after my first colonoscopy the surgeon asked if I knew that I had a “tortured colon”. I didn’t so he explained that my colon was a lot longer than it should be causing more pressure in the gut to move waste material through which in turn causes a lot of constipation. I use the K Fibre once every day and that keeps everything soft and moving. Good luck and take care!

Right after I got back from deployment I started having lower back pain. For two years I was taking 4ea 800mg Motrin two to three times a day for back pain. They said it was probably arthritis. Back Pain but I could still run, lift, and do sit ups but sometimes I could not stand up without help because of the pain. I retired and eventually got borescoped and it turns out my back pain was diverticulitis. Tried different diets and had flare ups at least once a month. The short is that last year I tried to go on a carnivore type diet. Mostly meat and only animal products. My flare ups are down to a mild one every few months. I feel good, lost weight, etc. My primary care doctor tests me about once a quarter. The problem is finding quality meat and eggs and I get lectures from people saying that I need vegies. I miss tomatoes and raising a garden but I think I am good for now.

I had it a month ago for the first time, I had no clue that such condition exists, had so much pain in my lower left side of the stomach, doctor sent me to the hospital immediately, after CT scan I was diagnosed. I am now so scared of food honestly, I don't know what to eat anymore. Every video I watched gave a different advice, total confusion! Some doctors advise lots of red meat, some doctors advise no red meat, some doctors advise lots of fiber rich foods others say avoid fiber 🤷🏻♀️ my doctor from the hospital told me to eat normally as before, wtf!!! 😭

I've had attacks since 40 years old, 33 years ago. I'm conscious of my diet constantly. As others have said, there is no one food that's bad, but combinations and stress, can make a difference. Fibre is good until it's not. Dehydration is always bad. Water is always good. You can't drink too much water. In the last few years, I finally have doctor who doesn't treat antibiotics as if it's heroin. Meaning I have prescription with multiple refills. Augmentin 875 works best with none of the side effects of Flagyl and cipro.

Ty so much! I was just diagnosed and looking for info. I’ve read that alcohol is also really bad for it. I was thinking about quitting drinking anyway so that’s good. The other thing about smoking. I thought I was OK but then when you said it was the nicotine that causes the bowels to inflame, are use a Vape with nicotine… I guess I have to get rid of that too! 🙁🙁 But honestly this is actually very good because I need to reduce meat and alcohol and up my veggies anyway. This diagnosis seems to be a blessing in disguise!

Definitely quit smoking cigarettes or weed as I’ve tried to go back to smoking and it made it much worse now I don’t smoke at all which makes everything much better. The pain was so bad it made its quit smoking pretty easy

This condition is huge red flag from your body. I stopped drinking milk, eating meat (for animalwelfare though), and eat only cheese from grasfed animals preferably goats. NO corn and white bread. Lots of veggies, no produced foods. Back to basics!

To OP, you'll find that one vice is synergistic to another. Alcohol makes you crave more nicotine and in reverse. Sugar and caffine also feeds into the same reward pathways. So... it's hard to cut just one or two as the others will continue to trigger the cravings for the things you're trying to quit. Trust me, you quit drinking you'll find that you'll want a lot more sugary snacks very quickly. I'd switch to nicotine pouches to work on the oral fixation of nicotine. I wish you all the success!

Great, excellent presentation. Just discovered 4 weeks ago i got diverticulitis. this has been going on for about 10 years but never paid any attention as in the past hit me for a very short spell and went for few months. Lately it was 24/7, with unbearable pains, the result of strong pain killer's side effect that caused me constipation. Quite strange as i am vegetarian non smoker and had regular bowl movement and have been drinking 2 lt of water daily.

You might want to insure that you are getting lots of fiber in your diet. Diverticulitis is healed with a whole food plant based diet. Cheese is an offender as well as meat and refined foods.

@@isabellezablocki7447 in OPs case it's just caused by opioid use which can greatly slow gut motility. That's what triggered my issue after years of taking them. I still eat red meat, cheese etc but I do generally only eat one meal a day or do periods of extended fasting and 3 years later, hasn't come back yet... got rid of my leg swelling too from leaky blood vessels.

I am seventy and have never had any problem with it? I have been cutting down on meat in the last year and eating only fish and salad. I am now wondering if a total vegetarian diet for a least six months will give my intestine time to recuperate? Do you have any other information that you could share?

I am very happy to read all these well thought out comments. It is really nice to know "others have suffered" as much as I have in 5hr emergency room visit, from all sorts of tests, pokes proddeds scans, etc and it came back with Diverticulitis. Anyone else felt like death itself? it seems so. I can see now, that severe dehydration, and largefiber intake with medicine taking for spine injury with minimal water intake, turned to Severe feaver and pulsing an pounding headache, unable to stop sweating, barfing (both ends, constantly) turns out.. was a stomach virus/ irritation> in my 40's and reading these.. maybe I feel pain more than other people but I swear it was the worst ever, and i've had tattoo's broken bones surgeries etc.. Also, its hard to research stuff when you are sick or ill, there is so much similar out there... I mean, I may or may not take medicine for pinworms after i run my course of antibiotics, just in case.. it seems this isn't something that is given in America as often, or discussed, and several symptoms are similar... can't hurt, right? I mean, barefoot a lot a lot. who knows? I just wanna feel better i can hardly function this bloat, this pain over all and Liquid diet.... we will see in a few days i'll try to check in.... Really glad i read all these comments. I can put down water and medicine without it coming up, so far so good.

I'm alive! :) Even ate some solid food yesterday had first meat in long while been on chicken soup and tuna fish, bananas lots of water and juice. still its achy, some days are better but colonoscopy in a month (had to wait for antibiotics?) so maybe good, maybe bad but this heat wave isn't helping. im alive! thx man.

I'm with you on this one, 38yrs old I do smoke but stay very active. Maybe not the best diet but not horrible. Recently spent an afternoon in ER due to extreme pain and was diagnosed as diverticulitis. The pain from this is no joke. I was at work sweating and on the verge of bein sick when i left for the ER. A week later with antibiotics and a light diet and doin better.

Kefir. Yogurt. Fasting with lots of water helps. It doesn't run in my family but does on my poor son's side of his. I got better after NO more antibiotics. (I had many antibiotics while pregnant due to unknown kidney problems.) Stress also triggers it. My son has had several bouts of it, and shops for the organic kefir anywhere he can.😊It keeps his bowels clear and is great on his stomach. Coincidentally, I lived on Kefir smoothies while pregnant with him. 👶 Good luck to all, and will pray for a cure someday. Yes. It is very painful. 💔

AGREED! And the fasting didn't do anything for me, I fasted for 3 days before the kefir and probiotics and the flareup continued. This condition is caused by gut dysbiosis (bad bacteria overtaking your colon and infecting the diverticula). Get some kefir made preferably from grass fed cows with billions of probiotics, such as Maple Hill kefir (I get mine from Publix). And get a chewable acidophilis probiotic supplement and another one I use is by Mason that includes acidophilus and bifidus with a prebiotic (food for the cultures). Also take 3 or 4 teaspoons of ORGANIC extra virgin olive oil per day (I take morning, noon and night). It destroys h. pylori and other bad bacteria in the gut without destroying the good ones like antibiotics do. This (the olive oil) needs to be done for about 2-4 weeks at least. I'd keep doing the probiotics indefinately. Maybe taper off to just 1 capsule and 1 serving of kefir per day after you are fully healed. Since I started doing the things listed above, my diverticulitus symptoms stopped completely. I got a huge, noticeable improvement after the very first day of drinking the kefir. I drink about 1/4th a cup in the morning and 1/2 cup at night before bed. Try it. It worked wonders for me!! I couldn't even drink water without a flare up before I started this regimen. My flare up went on for 6 weeks with no signs of stopping until I got the kefir, probiotics and organic extra virgin olive oil. After 2 weeks of doing that, I was and am eating whatever I want again. So I'm some kind of exception mostly. I was 43 when I had to go to emergency and found out I had diverticulitis. Ate little red meat. Was getting plenty of exercise. Didn't have a high BMI...back then. Drank plenty of water and milk and coffee..that's not the best I know. I like peas and you know other legumes plus bread that has all the stuff. Was not constipated...it was the other. Most of my adult life I've had that crap. Imodium is my friend haha. Ugh. But I did smoke and I did drink. Are polyps the same as diverticulosis? Pouches? I have to go back for my 3rd full colonoscopy and I always have polyps removed. I'm having alot of trouble, also have to have an endoscopy every time. My Mom just passed from colon cancer, among other things. Pretty scared now. Thanks for the vid🙏🤔

While some of the risk factors mentioned in the video are somewhat accurate, as in most physical manifestations as they relate to a particular disorder or disease are subjective and a “one size fits all” does nothing to explain the symptoms of many of these diseases. What is most conspicuously absent as a major cause or certainly a major contributing factor in diverticula presentations in a patient, is stress. Stress, anxiety and the resulting production of cortisol in the body, specifically in the bowel/colon, wreaks absolute havoc on the digestive system in addition to almost every other major functioning organ of the body. An incredible omission from this informative video to be sure.

So true, I agree. I have these diverticular problems for the past 2,5 yrs, and 15 days ago I ended up in a hospital for the first time-severe diverticulitis flare up. Ma weight is normal, I eat more vegetables and fruits, I walk a lot and clime on mountains...but still got this severe attack. So I fugured out-it's the stress I've been going through couple of yrs, specailly this year.

I’ve had Crohns Disease 35 years, Hypothyroidism for 25, Diverticulitis for 2 and Diabetes for 18 months. Food is complicated! What’s good for one, the other ones hate. I eat very little red meat and not much meat, in general. I don’t smoke. I’m not over weight. I can hardly leave my house because of diarrhea. I’m at my wits end with all of it!

My last "attack" was recent, and I was in incredible pain for 8 days! I usually have attacks every 2 or 3 months ... the biggest contributors for me are stress, bad diet NO SEEDS OR NUTS! Strawberries are almost a guarantee! I also have heart issues that conflict with the foods I "should" be eating for diverticulitis.... Brocolli and most "green" vegatables are rich in vitamin K. Vitamin K thickens your blood, and directly affects blood pressure, and stroke probability. I usually tough it out, I don't have good enough insurance to pay for surgery, or even treatment. I'm trying now with diet, more water, reduced smoking, never drink, and reduce stress. Thank you very much for this post, it has helped me a great deal! I once had "Beaver Fever" and since I've had diverticulitis.... Coincidence? Just curious. I'm also a recovering alcoholic so I don't drink, but, I firmly believe my long term drinking of hard liquor over the years is the culprit. Again, thank you, and God bless!

Hello Keith, don't be so hard on yourself - it appears that you are trying hard to understand ways of controlling your diet. I have suffered with severe diverticular disease since 2009 and every morning I have the most dreadful cramps which usually last for about four hours. I respect that doctors and specialists do their best to help but as I often say, they learn about this disease from studying the problem but unless they suffer with it, they have no idea ! Like you Keith - we have to listen to what our bodies are telling us and act accordingly. Best of luck to you.

Hi Keith, i had a conversation with a fellow worker today today at work whose mother was diagnosed of diverticulitis and he shared what the doctors notes advised. The problem with the life in west is we dont take enough fiber in our diet, the wheat that we rely on to make a part of our daily fiber intake is highly genetically modified. Try Milled Flax seeds and Chia seeds with probiotics. You can make a smoothie and add Kefir and some Probiotic supplements and add Honey to speed and sooth the stomach lining. I am not a doctor but i try to master my own well being with research, repair the Gut first and you will see the difference. Remember Hypocrites quotes, " All disease begins in the gut".

As a heavy smoker and meat lover/keto, I opted to do a 4 day fast just out of curiosity. Cleared this up and my ankle swelling. 3 years later neither issue has returned. A relative of mine has stage IV heart failure and they did random bits of one meal a day and extended fasting. Heart function went from 12% to nearly 50% in a year as we had come to find out with a recent hospital visit. A team of 9 different doctors ran multiple tests multiple times and all agreed they've never witnessed that much of an increase in their careers. The heart in particular prefers to run on the fuel(BHB) the body makes during extended fasts. I imagine fasting would greatly help too as it would give the gut time to heal instead of constantly breaking food down. It helps with water retention after a few days too. It's insane how much you'll pee at the end of day 2. Worth checking out!

Yes I think this is a general overview , a lot of people can not take to much fibre, older people loose stomach acid and cannot break down the fibre, the fibre ends up in the bowl and causes the problems, but doctors still keep telling patients to eat more fibre

Yup, my health issues including diverticulitis cleared up just doing crappy keto and fasting. Just cut out the sugar and wheat. Last I checked, we're not herbivores either. In fact some of the healthiest groups and tribes studied around the world ate a ridiculous amount of meat and very little vegetation. They also had stronger, whiter and more straight teeth. Folks like the Inuut. A person can actually survive and thrive on what's considered coma level blood sugar levels when they abstain from all the crappy processed carbs and sugar. More fiber is akin to taking a medication for a diet that's ultimately killing us.

Eating corn gave me so much pain, by day 3, I ended up having to go to the E.R. drink lots of water. Because a clear fluid diet for 10 days isn't exciting..

I live in fear of another diverticulitis flare after decades of chronic constipation. My magic for the past 5 yrs. has flax and chia seeds and drinking more water. I have been grinding the seeds together and consuming about 2 tbsps. daily by adding them to cereal, cottage cheese, pancakes and other foods which keeps me regular. After the attack I had (intense pain in lower left side, fever and abscess formed) I was on strong antibiotics and liquid diet, i didn’t need surgery. THANK GOD! I do eat higher fiber, fruits and veggies and go easier on red meat.

I just turned 40, I have had abdominal pains on and off for a year or more. Lately it has been excruciating. Been taking a special anti inflammatory to help and drinking lots of water. Also completely cut out gluten and I don’t eat red meat anyway. I hope this is gone soon it’s so Lucy an uncomfortable feeling and has completely destroyed me lately

Have you tried fasting for several days? It was a lifesaver for me. Haven't had an episode in 3 years after a 4 day fast. It's very safe unless you're a T1 diabetic. Can literally cure T2 diabetes and restore heart function too. Skipping a few meals, saving money on those meals, less medications and all for free, minus the electrolytes a person should take during fasting periods. There's basically no downside, just a bit of effort. Worst case, you'll just loose several lbs and with enough extended fasts, tighter skin too! Check out Jason Fung MD. The science is legitimate. 😁

An adult needs 35 milligrams of fiber a day. Psyllium husk, organic apple cider, 4 oz water and 4 oz inner organic aloe Vera juice add honey or stevia for taste drink with a straw. Do this early morning on an empty stomach. Avoid red meat. Chase with 8 oz water and a bag of green tea. Also do another 8 oz with fresh brewed peppermint tea. Drink warm as you can stand. This helped me. Super charge with 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper. Chase with almond milk. Don’t look down with pepper on tongue. Yes, cardio exercise does help melt the stools to come out etc.

I am 59 and just diagnosed with diverticulitis . I have ptsd , with chronic pain from fibromyalgia and neuropathy. Medical marijuanna would work for all my conditions . Unfortunately I live in a illegal state and suffer on a daily basis . 🙄 As a recovering narcotic addict, of 8 plus years , I refuse to take any narcotics . My diet has changed to fish 🐟 and chicken 🐔 and veggies NO RED MEAT OR PORK.

Idk who is going to see this but I had got diagnosed with diverticulitis about 6 months ago after two cat scans and terrible pain.. I went to Jesus and believed in God for my healing had my church family and my family praying for me, had to focus on Godw word when it comes to healing and cast down every evil thought, so long story short I end up having a colonosxopy and the doctor was shocked!! He found nothing wrong, iam healed and jesus was the reason, the doctor was talking about having to cut out a peace of my colon, i hope this encourages someone to get your healing from Jesus, he is very real!!

I eat mostly healthy. Lots of salads, fermented vegetables, Apple cider vinegar, lots of water, supplements. The 2 or 3 times I get diviticulitis, is right after eating prime rib or grilled steak. It’s probably the fat that I eat that’s triggering it. I keep a food journal when I get these very painful, can barely walk flare ups. I can eat low fat hamburger and brautwerst sausage no problem. But that good tasting steak and prime rib is now off limits. To recover, lots of aloe juice, boiled garlic, boiled white potato diet, very bland food, chicken broth with rice. No gluten at all! Heredity gave me diverticulitis as a preteen. At 36, the ER misdiagnosed my diverticulitis as appendicitis after my urging that I had diverticulitis. Doctors said "I was too young & that it wasn't hereditary". My mother, her sisters, my siblings, my newphews (at 11 yrs old) all have this condition. Surgery ended up doing exploratory which showed my condition. My last colonoscopy showed I had over 200 diverticuli. One photo showed 10 pockets in one inch. Even though they say to eat whatever I want, I have avoided all seeds and nuts to avoid a bout of this painful condition. Thank you for you added information.

Get some kefir made preferably from grass fed cows with billions of probiotics, such as Maple Hill kefir (I get mine from Publix). And get a chewable acidophilis probiotic supplement and another one I use is by Mason that includes acidophilus and bifidus with a prebiotic (food for the cultures). Also take 3 or 4 teaspoons of ORGANIC extra virgin olive oil per day (I take morning, noon and night). It destroys h. pylori and other bad bacteria in the gut without destroying the good ones like antibiotics do. This (the olive oil) needs to be done for about 2-4 weeks at least. I was diagnosed with severe diverticulitis over 25years ago. I was 50 years old. The consultant said that he had not seen many much worse than I had.. I have never smoked, didn't and do not eat red meat, my weight was 7.5 stone and have always been skinny form. I have and still eat fresh veg and fruit and

i just hit 41, and last month my doc diagnosed me with diverticulitis which i first thought was food poisoning, but after a ct scan and blood work, it turned out diverticulitis. its been almost a full month and still trying recover. started on a diet with more fiber then normal.

I was the same way, diagnosed in the ER after a CT scan with diverticulosis. What have you Changed in your diet? Have you had diarrhea or constipation ? I’ve been dealing with diarrhea/loose stools for about two weeks now. Doctors said you can either have one of the other. This really sucks, I have to stop eating red meat and over all change my diet. Are you taking any fiber? Have you talked to your doctor, if so what was her advice?

I got diagnosed after making changes to my diet wich was increase of granola pistachios and yogurt also had a habit of big plates for dinner lol I'm only 21 BTW so be careful it sucks!! These Small sacrifices is way better then going threw that again

I was diagnosed with diverticulosis in 2018 along with Gerd. Diet is paramount with the Monash diet being important. While fiber is important, going too strong on fiber with give you diverticulitis. Caffeine, red meat and the Cruciferous vegetables are culprits.

I want to spread the word as someone who has had intensely bad flare ups of diverticulitis. My advice to anyone, no matter your diet. The most important change I’ve made to avoid flare ups is to drink a glass of water before anything first thing in the morning. The water aids digestion, stops blockages, encourages bowel movement. Obviously, drinking water after ever meal would also be ideal, but if you’re too busy just make sure the first thing you put to your lips when you wake up is water. Touchwood I haven’t had any flare ups.

According to Ayurveda, best to wait one hour after a meal before drinking water, this will aid digestion. Otherwise digestion will be impaired if you drink immediately after a meal.

After an attack of diverticulitis from eating blackberries in yoghurt I had to go to A&E . I went all day with no food and just water and I felt much better. I will be careful in future to avoid any seeds.

I haven’t had a bad attack of diverticulitis in years, not eating gluten has helped me. If I do eat the wrong food, and feel bloated or uncomfortable, I use Iberogast 20 drops in a little water, it really helps settled my stomach.

Thank you sir I have gone onto a high fiber diet and now drink two pints of water a day and much of the pain has gone also much more regular loo activity. Having water with a meal is a good idea.

The smallest can ofTree Top Apple juice. 100% apple. It helps constipated remove easier. I keep forget drinking water. Apple juice just in case if you need it. Drink it and wait over night. It helps to soft or dissolve it. Hope it helps.

Fruit juices aren’t the best way to go...better to FAST and or add ground flax seed in food and take epsom salt bath or take a teaspoon dissolved in some warm water to clean out bowels (takes about an hour so stay near bathroom)

Drinking Prune Juice is an old remedy that works better than other juices ... I guarantee it. It will clear out your intestines. It will also reduce or even eliminate the pain, depending on the severity of your condition.

As long as I eat plenty of greens, and drink plenty of water, I don’t have issues with red meat. Smoked meat (such as BBQ) bothers me the most…but again, if I’ve not been eating plenty of greens, and am not well hydrated, then it bothers me.

If you're prone to NSAID induced diverticular bleeding you need to be on the lookout for blood thinners and anti-platelet drugs such as Plavix (Clopidogrel). Many cardiologists routinely put their patients on a regimen of Plavix+Aspirin. This combination is more powerful than just either one by itself and can definitely be the culprit behind diverticular bleeding.

This is what happened to me. I took only 2 Advil a few days apart. Then took naproxen sodium to stop a migraine. Then had pain on my lower left quadrant. Went to dr. and put me on antibiotics and got a cat scan.

I am 69 and have a partial blockage of the intestine due to a long-ago-near-death-causing bout of complicated diverticulitis (with abcess or perforation, accompanied by septic shock and no medical treatment, due to having no health insurance at the time.) I had $$ to pay for treatment, when I first found myself getting sick from this, and had been diagnosed with diverticulosis during a colonoscopy a few years before. Explained to several private family physicians that I could pay for treatment, but no insurance, no go. So I almost died at home, BUT at least didn't have unnecessary surgery that I would've had if I'd gone to ER. Meanwhile, have insurance now, many years later, and haven't had much problem with any further diverticulitis attacks, perhaps had only a few mild ones in the last 7 or so years. Went for routine colonoscopy last year, only to find they couldn't complete it due to partial blockage, which meant I had to go for virtual colonoscopy. Then to surgeon who wanted to do surgery, but couldn't tell me what benefit I'd get from it, other than it might prevent a full blockage later on. Did my own research, and found out that surgical "reconnections" actually have a slightly higher risk of developing blockages than your own body's natural healing (if resulting in only partial blockages) so I'll take my chances. (Not having issues with bowel movements, constipation, etc.) Recently had a moderate bout of diverticulitis again. Cramps were awful, but didn't go to doctor, and each day got incrementally less severe. Now recovered. IMO, I have to wonder if stress and anxiety, plus age, plus a possible genetic component, might help bring on these attacks. Just my own experience.

Common Sense, start taking a tablespoon of mineral oil every night before bed. Blockages won't ever cure themselves; they're almost always old scar tissue. But the lubrication will help from day to day.

LOL, I went carnivore and "cured" my diverticulitis for over a year zero flare ups no pain what so ever - also have amazing blood tests - went off and ate veggies again and a more normal diet and in two weeks back to lower gut pain and all the symptoms i use to suffer. Went back to carnivore and wow no pain at all and feel amazing ! Red meat is not the boggie man !

Hello... I’m sorry I have this, got diagnosed a couple of years ago, but I’ve got no gallbladder..had to have this out because I was told by a specialist Dr if I didn’t have this out in the next two years... I would have died of cancer as it showed my gallbladder had nobualls if untreated I wouldn’t be here today. My weight was a big problem, at that time I weighed 22 and a half stone, I am also diabetic on Insulin 3 times a day, I have many many health problems, but by myself I’ve managed to lose 7 stone in weight, no groups of any dietary requirements,no slimming world, no weight watchers, no keto dieting...trust me over the years believe me I’ve tried them all..no magic soups etc the list goes on,!!! I’ve done it all over the last 5 years...I’ve got stuck at 16 stone for the last year or so... I Just can’t get under that, and if I do go down or up a few pounds... I’m still happy with that...because my mind won’t let me go back to the way I was...🥰🐾🦊🇬🇧🤛

It keeps coming up with increasing with age however the more I research this horrible disease, the more young people have it. Im 41 and just diagnosed with complicated diver. Water intake is good but on a flare up retention of eater is very hard due to swelling pressing on my bladder.

To help soften stools when having hard (Goat ) poops, I was advised to mix a teaspoon full of Maxilax to a drink. It also sells under the name: Polyethylene glycol, or Normalax. The stuf softens your stool by adding liquid to it, thus helping it to leave your intestines. I just monitor my body, and add it when needed to a drink. It is tasteless and does not cause diarrhea or cramps once you find the right amount to take.

This is pretty much what I have now. A poor diet and lack of exercise during this pandemic might have something to do with it. It went from slight burning to pain over the past day or two. I'm seeing a doctor tomorrow.

No need for surgery just self discipline...why did people not exercise during Covd I don’t get that...I stayed in shape throughout and even did yoga with broken leg and crushed hand using one hand and took my own recovery and health into my own hands as surgeon dropped the ball not having me do free range motion exercises, physical and occupational therapy So I took my fifth boot cast off and started going barefoot up and down our stairs etc.

Before just recently winding up in the hospital I never had Diverticulitis. I was so mad when I wound up with this. Then I was trying with my diet if I didn't need to eat to keep my strengh I wouldn't hardly eat at all. Then I couldn't because the diarrhea got out of control. I'm on antibiotics now I hope they do the trick and get rid of this. I have been afraid to eat for the fear of the diarrhea returning.

I was first diagnosed with diverticulitis at age 39 and have a strong family history. I lived with excruciating and debilitating pain for 19 years and was prescribed high doses of antibiotics. My flare ups were sporadic for the first 10 years then afterwords increased to about 2 to 5 per year. Once was hospitalized as the antibiotics were not working sufficiently. Finally after 19 years, on March 2021, I decided to have surgery and a portion of my sigmoid colon was removed. For the first time I was free from diverticulosis, or so I thought, until just recently in January 2022 I had another small flare up. I’ve done everything over the years to improve and modify my diet. Gluten, corn and constipation seem to trigger the flare ups. Occasional red meat eater, but mostly chicken. Decided to share my story so folks are aware that it can happen at any age. I believe I was able to live with it for so long because I was very careful with my diet and obviously the antibiotics did help. However, I have never been great at exercising, so if I would’ve known better I would have done abdominal exercises when I was much younger. Was also a smoker from ages 18-28. Thanks Vivianne...I too have diverticulitis was diagnosed 14 years ago I'm 49 now..I've had 3 hospital stays in this last year!!..just like you I've dealt with it.. hoping it would just go away with medication and better diet..my smoking doesn't help either.. Ok now waiting on surgeon to give me date to have resection..I'm scared to have surgery but I know it's for the best!!..I can't live with constant pain and or whether or not this will be the bad attack!!!...But your story sounds very similar to mine..so at least there is light at the end of this...I hope!!!..thanks again Craig..

@@craigmusco7240 Hi Craig, Thank you for sharing your story with me. I would like to give you an update of my health since my surgery a year and a half ago. As mentioned, I had one flareup a couple of months after the surgery. The symptoms were fever and pain but dissipated after a day or two. Phew! That was the extent of it and only occasion. I periodically get a little bit of pain in that general area of the abdomen when I am slightly constipated. Bowel movements are regular and I can pretty much eat what I like without any problems. Do not have any more fevers and have not had any antibiotics whatsoever since the surgery. However I do avoid certain foods, just in case… I hope this helps you as you move forward with your surgery. I was diagnosed with diverticulosis when I was 13. Back then I was thin, active, always running around (no video games in the 60's) and I was obviously not over 60 then. I can't remember my diet that well although we didn't have a lot of meat but plenty of peas and beans. I certainly didn't smoke, in fact have never. If you ask me, diverticulosis is a genetic condition that just happens. Sure these risk factors increase the risk of diverticulitis, but the underlying pathology is already there. I wonder just how many people have had their guts studied from birth through to at least say 30 to prove that diverticulosis progressed from zero. If it's not genetic, then I suggest gaseous bloating from early childhood (colic?) is way more likely than these proposed causes.

Some of the information that you provide in these videos about diverticulitis are great, but you are leaving out some very relevant information. I don't know if that's because you don't know, so I will advise you on what I have learnt. A huge risk factor for the encompassed conditions is that of a vegan/vegetarian diet, or other very high fibre intake, as high fibre intake can, and usually does, cause low intestinal motility.... especially with non-organic foods, and doubly so with a high fruit intake. A lot of people that have been plant based for an extended period find this out the hard way. Other increased health risks from plant heavy, and processed diets, are a large range of cancers, insulin resistance and IBS. Also you might want to include as risk factors; abdominal impact injuries and core surgery that limit core/abdominal mobility, such as spinal fusion and venous ligation. These factors have caused and worsened mine. I also had other risk factors compounding my experience, I was obviously administered high doses of antibiotics at the time of surgery that destroyed my gut biome, and then I was put on NSAIDS (for far too long apparently, another risk factor, as you noted), because they wouldn't consider giving me opioid pain relief to stop the muscular "guarding".... Not that I knew anything about it at the time, nor asked for it, and I just trusted what was advised to do. As an aside; use of high CBD cannabis removes the need for these medications, as it is both an anti-inflammatory and helps with pain management (although it is not a "pain-killer"). I keep coming across the misinformation that you mention, espousing that red meat is bad for you, this is patently untrue. A carnivore diet has helped manage the symptoms of my diverticulitis (grass fed red meat, with mineral salt, ie: pink Himalayan or Celtic Sea salt, accompanied with a high water intake; distilled or filtered water is highly advised for this). Fruit juice (especially from concentrate), sugary and/or energy type drinks and too much coffee are to be avoided, but milk seems to be fine. Obviously vigorous exercise remains a must, as I found out after being assaulted multiple times by my ex partner, suffering more abdominal injury, putting me in a wheelchair part time, and having to start the healing process from scratch again (with no medical insurance). There are two reasons why vigorous exercise, including abdominal flexion, is a must; increased blood flow - throughout the body, and the flexing of the abdominal muscles helps with gut motility. Without these behaviours observed in conjunction however, constipation is more than likely, so your advice, regarding red meat, is true in that respect. Also this type of lifestyle change will help with obesity and lengthen overall quality of life, and life expectancy.

im 32 and was diganosed last year i ate very bad from the age of 22 because i moved out of parents house i just had takeaways and frozen pizza very rare i had vegtables or healthy foods no i wish i had the flare ups are really bad now i eat more fiber food like beans and bread more vegatables chicken and broths it helps a lot.

I had 18 inches taken out but apparently my whole large intestine is riddled with diver so I’m forever stuck with this unless I get my whole large intestine taken out. I was diagnosed at 23 years old and I feel it’s from extended use of pain medicine for multiple back surgeries. Still have episodes often but have been living with this for 24 years.

This condition is caused by gut dysbiosis (bad bacteria overtaking your colon and infecting the diverticula). Get some kefir made preferably from grass fed cows with billions of probiotics, such as Maple Hill kefir (I get mine from Publix). And get a chewable acidophilis probiotic supplement and another one I use is by Mason that includes acidophilus and bifidus with a prebiotic (food for the cultures). Also take 3 or 4 teaspoons of ORGANIC extra virgin olive oil per day (I take morning, noon and night). It destroys h. pylori and other bad bacteria in the gut without destroying the good ones like antibiotics do. This (the olive oil) needs to be done for about 2-4 weeks at least. I'd keep doing the probiotics indefinately. Maybe taper off to just 1 capsule and 1 serving of kefir per day after you are fully healed. Since I started doing the things listed above, my diverticulitus symptoms stopped completely. I got a huge, noticeable improvement after the very first day of drinking the kefir. I drink about 1/4th a cup in the morning and 1/2 cup at night before bed. Try it. It worked wonders for me!! I couldn't even drink water without a flare up before I started this regimen. My flare up went on for 6 weeks with no signs of stopping until I got the kefir, probiotics and organic extra virgin olive oil. After 2 weeks of doing that, I was and am eating whatever I want again. It's very important to keep fully hydrated with good clean water. I drink my body weight in lbs, convert to ounces and drink that amount in water with a pinch of Himalayan pink salt or sea salt per litre. Do your own math on that one and do your body a favour.

Sugar seems to start my pain up. Like pancake syrup...oh my gosh!!! But it's always different..sometimes anything with tomato in it or black pepper or jalepeno. And then other times they don't bother me so idk. but black Pepper always does!!! I take Famotidine ( prescribed) and a Pepto-Bismol tablet usually takes the pain away in about 10-15 minutes

Not meaning to interfere, and I am not a troll. Just concerned, and wanted to let you know Pepto Bismol has an aspirin like med in it, so can cause severe irritation to bowels. I have bad problem with nsaids, and have to read all labels to prevent inadvertently taking nsaid with Diverticulosis.

Thanks for the information, but, about the red meat consumption: big difference between the red meat eaten from the super markets and the meat from the GRASSFED animals (whole animal foods) are very high in nutrients: no comparisons with grain fed animals which cause health problems.

I agree 1000%. In the media past and present, red meat has often been vilified. However, the articles that do so ALWAYS lump all kinds of red meat together. They do not differentiate the dangers of "conventional" grain-fed from the health benefits of organic, "grass-fed" meats. This same type of "garbage journalism" is done with a host of other food types as well. And it just irritates the daylights out of me!

The only difference is the husbandry and the ethics and that's for another time / place. You're not eating broccoli when you're eating grass-fed beef, you know! Grassfeed animals are definitely better for your gut than grain feed meat, but meat is meat. There are literally thousands of studies published now that link meat and red meat consumption with cancers, several kinds of gut deceases, high blood pressure, diabetes etc etc.

Very informative! It's surprising how little fiber most of us get. I switched to whole wheat/whole grains and eat vegetables and nuts everyday. Of course with fiber, you'll need lots of fluids otherwise it can cause constipation.

I had five attacks in 2 years. Was in the hospital 5 days each time. Finally had to have 6" of my bowels removed. Luckily no bag! I've had a few attacks since, but no hospital care needed. It's a nasty condition. The surgery is brutal. Do your best to avoid it in the first place.

Yes..I agree... Drs need to learn about natural healing but big pharma won't allow it to happen..too much money being made with medications...so insurance companies will never pay for natural healing. Earthing/ grounding ( do research) helps with body pain and daily shot of wheat grass grass helped my tummy episodes happen fewer and farther between.

Pancake syrup is the worst thing ever, I think because it’s corn sweeter. I used a little bit of sugar instead of syrup and it made a big difference. Bad for allergic reaction to anything with corn also.

There are many other risk factors, including pregnancy, when you might become more constipated, and abdominal surgery, which can cause adhesions/scar tissue. So don’t always blame the ‘normal’ causes. I do not absolutely agree with all that is said in this video. Vigorous exercise, indeed!!!! Especially when you’re 85!!! I think every 85 year old should be running 20 kilometres, per day! Nice vigorous exercise!

At 78 I have had bouts of diverticulitis for the last 50 years. I have a bmi of 25, just barely borderline over weight also have a lot of dizziness when standing which limits what exercise I can do. I have had 35 surgeries, 18 for adhesions and 3 for perforated intestines.

Just want everyone to know that since I started taking Tongkat Ali, I haven’t had any symptoms at all. Not sure why it works but it doesn’t turn to diverticulitis which is amazing. I can eat normal now and not have to worry about

I take one teaspoon of psyllium husks mixed in liquid (for me a smoothie) once a day. I eat whatever I want and haven't had an attack in ten years. I had three in a twelve month period before that.
