Going to the range should be an intentional act of understanding what we need to do to improve our shooting, the execution of necessary exercises, and accurate evaluation so that we may continually refine our skills. Make sure that you are properly prepared and equipped for a safe and successful day at the range. This video outlines what I believe are some of the essentials.

Note to newbies, laws about transporting loaded magazines vary widely by state, and rules about whether or not you can draw from (or even wear) holsters will frequently vary significantly from range to range as well. Take the active step to look up how your local laws might differ from Tacticool GF's range trips and cover your butt legally.

TBH if you never intend to engage with the sport there is still good information to learn if you want. Ian from Forgotten Weapons has a great video on how to 'make safe' the five most common rifles in the world without ever needing to know how to use them. Also, look into emergency trauma treatments. Not only are there tons of videos but FEMA and the US Military have both made that information freely available to the public.

You should start. When it was heavily in our water during the 70s and early 80s... It really messed a lot of people up! Brain damage! Death! And worst of all... Hair loss!!! Jk lol. But that whole death thing I mentioned earlier is a pretty big deal... So yeah... Don't let the extreme lead levels into your body : ) Not only bad for your body but magneto might screw you over too...

Massad Ayoob was the first teacher I had who really stressed lead abatement, and a lot of other instructors made fun of him for it. Nice to see his wisdom has been proven out. That's one area where I will probably keep wearing a mask even after things get back to normal. If you wear a respirator around other metal shavings and dust, why not around a bad actor like lead? That scary, scary sweet taste in the air....

Love the practical advice here. "Take everything you need. Don't take anything you don't need. Don't take anything that will get you hurt. Lead will hurt you. Go there knowing what you're going to do and how you plan to do it." Never thought about the cones. Clever. They are also useful for dealing with unsafe shooters. "Sorry, but you have to wear the Cone of Shame." Since you asked about other things we take to the range.... A couple appropriately-sized wooden dowels and a small mallet. We've had cases expand or otherwise get stuck. Being able to tap them out is helpful. Cleaning kit. A couple of tough plastic lawn debris bags, some smaller bags, and change of clothes. Sometimes we're at places where it's practical to change. Lead-contaminated clothes go into a bag which gets tied off and don't contaminate the car. Wipes go into a small bag along with used masks. Brass goes into a small bags. The small bags and the used targets to into large bags. Range trash goes into another bag. Too many yahoos leave trash out when they shoot, so we bring extra to clean up after them. Depending on just how far out in the sticks we are - a folding shovel and extra wipes. Not the most couth part of the program, but it's best to be prepared. One thing we don't always bring is a holster. That may sound strange, but we teach a lot of beginners and want to minimize the opportunities for getting shot. Handguns on the bench or mat, actions/cylinders open when not in use is just common sense under those circumstances.

Hi there TCG! Love the video. I am totally recommending your channel to all of the covid newbies who have recently purchased their new firearms. It's great that you are breaking this all down into the basics. A couple of things I have been bringing lately are a brass catcher and a tarp. The brass catcher fits over the ejection port of my AR and is a great way to save your brass for reloading plus it keeps all of your spent brass from rolling all over the deck. Nothing like a slip and fall followed by an accidental discharge to make it necessary to use the IFAC. Also it keeps the environment more clean. I place a cloth tarp on the ground where my brass is falling. I like cloth because a plastic tarp will bounce the shells and it sometimes gets melted where the hot brass lands on it. Then when you are done at your shooting position you just fold it up and funnel the spent brass into a suitable container. One last thing I always bring with me is a toilet kit. Mine is pretty simple. It consists of a roll of toilet paper some baby wipes and a small folding shovel. It makes an emergency situation in the woods slightly more comfortable, plus it decreases your chances of having to wipe your heiney with potentially poisonous leaves. Have a great day! Namaste.

Another well thought out and well presented video, great job TGF! Ok, atta-girls aside, I bring a trash bag with me. Obvious reason is I like shooting at a clean range, and while some people are irresponsible pigs who leave their garbage behind, I try to leave it better than I found it. I've talked several other shooters into doing the same thing, and wonder of wonders, our usual range has gotten less trashy over time. While I've never seen someone shoot a microwave, I did watch a couple guys shoot up an old laptop. Afterward, I asked if they were going to pick up the mess they had made... "We would, but we didnt bring anything to put it in." I politely reached into my range bag and pulled out a trash bag, and told them that now they could clean up after themselves. Keep up the good work, it is appreciated!

Fun comment about ways to improve your training. I've had a Mantis X for what feels like a million generations. They are so much more advanced now. It's like a gryoscope sensor that mounts to a rail on a firearm. It detects the bang of your gun and can provide really good coaching on how your are handling things (wrists, trigger squeeze etc) based on muzzle movement. It also works with dry fire training. Slick little things.

Yes, sometimes just going to the range to let someone try out a cool gun or to blast the shit out of a figurative microwave can be fun. But doing that all the time will hardly make you a better shooter. So some "serious" practice is also a good idea.

One thing to keep in mind if you go to an indoor range is the ammo. Most ranges don't allow you to bring steel core ammo for liability reasons. If you don't know if your ammo has a steel core press it against a magnet and if it sticks then you likely won't be able to use that ammo.
@viralshark

And if you are renting a gun, they probably don't want you shooting your own ammo out of it due to liability issues.

Steel core is different from steel jacket. It's just better not to for an indoor range however, because steel on steel can spark a fire with unburnt powder.

Couple of other things I keep in my range bag: Bug spray/aerosol sun screen. Never know what kinda nonsense mother nature might throw at you 3m Adhesive spray. I like to staple my backers to my stands, but for the paper targets, spray adhesive is much faster and leaves less staples lying around. Probably not as environmentally friendly, however. Contractor Bags. Always leave the range cleaner than when you arrived. WATER. Hydrate yoself. Spare Ear/Eye pro. Cuz you never know. Extra markers. For doodling on the targets while your buddy loads/downloads mags between drills.

"The Skeletool is *just* fine" Them are fightin' words ma'am XD (Team Skeletool is best tool! :P) Also, completely agree on the .50 BMG ammo cans. I use one for my ammo transport as well. I've gotten a few strange looks at the range when rolling up with it (granted, German gun culture is *very* different from US gun culture XD), but it's super handy. And I can load it up whenever is convenient (like the evening before heading out to the range in the morning) and just throw it into the ammo cabinet (ammo has to be locked up here in Germany, although a simple sheet metal cabinet is sufficient) to grab it pre-packed when heading out.

Great advice as always. When I was young I could just go out in the Colorado hills and shoot. We were always strict about muzzle awareness but trigger control wasn’t such an issue. These days I find myself in a more urban environment and shoot at a range/ ranges. I’m still getting used to range etiquette. Safety is always my uppermost priority but each range has its own little quirks and it’s not difficult to get on the wrong side of some of them.

I scored 98% to your list and I took 2% off because while I always have a full first aid kit in my car, I do not take it to the benches. My Bad and that will change effective immediately. As to other differences in my list, I do take a field repair kit with small springs, small pins, trigger and hammer pins, batteries, punches, small cleaning kit, a small brass hammer, small 2sq ft white work cloth for disassembly and weighted part tray with a lid. Also, a good note from experience, only shoot targets that are rated for the firearm you're shooting. A buddy of mine caught a 9mm ricochet from a 2x2 metal pistol target (not rated for rifles) that someone decided to shoot with, you guessed it, a rifle from up the hill (for the record there are three AR500 metal targets to shoot). He was about 10 yards from it, fired, round hit a perfect dent in the plate that a rifle round made, did a 180 and popped him right in the stomach. Broke the skin and scared the absolute shit out of him, but didn't go any further than that, thankfully. It was at a private range where the owner also does CWP classes, and he said straight up out of the thousands of people he's taught he's never had an injury like that. Wasn't even during a class, just a random range day. So, be kind, be careful, have fun.

Those handy lead wipes that Tacticool GF is sharing are great for cleaning up when you don't have access to running water. I learned many years ago at the NRA's Handgun/Pistol Safety Course that you should always wash your hands IMMEDIATELY with COLD WATER after shooting. Do NOT use warm/hot water, because that opens up your pores, making it even easier for lead to get into your system.

I'll only bring 3 mags and a speed loader. I only use paper targets to zero my rifle and pistol. Otherwise I bring 2 steel silhouettes and my rubber dummy. The rubber dummy has been by far my best investment in targets. My main re-occuring cost is white spray paint. I bring 2 range bags as I shoot on state land, which is an hour away and I hate gun ranges as I don't care for other people around me and the feeling that I need to be supervised. I have everything I could need for repair, targets, extra parts, cleaning kit, wet wipes, med kit, flash light, sunscreen, mosquito spray, and safety gear like glasses and ear plugs. Normally when I go out, I'm out for 4-8 hrs, so I normally would bring my AR and pistol, then a bolt action to practice long range skills. Gotta make the most out each visit since I only go about once a month and an hour drive.

Can't tell you how many times another shooter will have something go wrong that would have ended their range day if I hadn't been there asking "what do you need?" There's a cheap screwdriver and bit set made by Pachmayr available on Amazon for less than $30. Prolly not the best for serious gunsmithing, but if you need to tighten an optic or take down a firearm, it works great.

@@acidtreat101 Yeah, cheap luggage locks provide zero security, even the TSA approved ones. If you have to fly and want you stuff secure, best tip I ever got was from Deviant Ollam (who's a supporter of this channel and a super cool guy) who suggested flying with a cheap unassembled lower in your checked bag, that way, by law (since a lower counts as a firearm) it must be declared, and in a hardshell case and you can use your own GOOD locks... I've done it twice. I don't like flying (because of the TSA) so if I have to fly it's for work, which means I'm traveling with tools, gadgets, etc with me that I'd REALLY like actually making it to my destination with me. Note on this one, of you do this, plan ahead, arrive early, expect a lot of questions and confusion from the TSA line workers...

Regarding holsters: If you're using an indoor range, some of them do not allow drawing from a holster for a variety of reasons from local ordinances, strict insurance policies to being run by fudds. I suspect sooner or later supply might be a bit more restricted as more is exported to the US, but I buy in bulk and always keep plenty stocked up, so I'm good :)

@@shanek6582 Yeah just like Biggie said. We generally don't keep guns for self-protection so there was no run on the guns and ammo for that reason. Ammo prices haven't changed but obviously guns and ammo from the US are harder to get. I hear reloading components are harder hit though, especially primers.

The fogging issue with masks can easily be fixed by using either medical tape or a bandaid over the top of the mask, it redirects the humid breath away from the glasses.

I've found that FFP2 masks work great for me. They sit tight enough that fogging isn't much of an issue. And come to think of it, it would probably be a good idea to keep wearing them even after that whole pandemic is over. At least at those questionably ventilated indoor ranges. You know, the ones that make your snot afterwards look like you just came out of a coal mine :X

Last time I went to an indoor range, they made me unload all my mags to check and make sure I didn't try to sneak in any tracers or armor piercing ammo. Generally, this range is pretty cool, they let you shoot steel cased ammo, you can practice drawing from a holster and they don't care about rapid fire. But that bullshit ruined my whole fucking day. I was pissed. Won't be going back there any time soon.

Being new to pistol shooting, I honestly never even considered worrying about lead exposure or contamination. If one is firing FMJ, Fully jacketed ammo at the indoor range,.. is this REALLY an issue? I understand that there could be plenty of gun powder residue on ones clothing & face after shooting a couple hundred rounds, but is Lead Contamination really going to be an issue with FMJ and not shooting steel?
@TacticoolGirlfriend
@TacticoolGirlfriend 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, mostly because of primer vapors and there's still lead residue left behind from the exposed rear of the round.

I've been trying to convince myself to get an IFAK, despite only shooting once every several months thanks to me not owning my own guns lol. This'll tip me in the right direction I think. Idk if you'll see this comment, but would you have any recommendations for pre-prepared IFAKs or should I just prep one myself?
@TacticoolGirlfriend
@TacticoolGirlfriend 3 жыл бұрын
I always recommend folks prepare one for themselves. Unless you're getting an IFAK to specifically have it used by a trained professional on YOU, then you are likely planning on using it yourself on someone else or yourself if you had to. That being said if that's the case, only carry what you are properly trained to use.

Do not wear low cut tops or tank tops. Hot brass can burn. If you get hot brass down your shirt, just shake your top. Don't do the funky chicken. If you are taking a class, try to take a spare handgun in the same caliber. If your handgun goes down, if will be difficult to participate in class. Hydrate before going to the range. if you are not peeing by 10 AM, you are dehydrated. And again, wash your hands before eating or going home.

Definitely look for local stop the bleed classes. Most major cities have them for free, although that may be a bit different under the circumstances of our current pandemic.

The Red Cross offers free/very chesp first aid courses, at least they do here in Germany. Those don't exactly focus on treating gun shot wounds, but typical injuries like car accidents etc. A lot of the stuff is transferrable though (how to stop a bleeding, how to properly use pressure bandages etc.) and depending on your area and the type/amount of gun crime there, they may even cover some gun shot specific stuff as well. Or the trainers (who are usually active or former EMTs) at least can provide some additional information when asking about it. There are of course also dedicated "tactical" medical courses, but they can be quite expensive and less generally applicable. I mean, what is more likely? That you will have to patch up someone while under fire and with an injury yourself (bonus points for having to return fire at the same time XD), or that you come across a car acident while on your way to the range or someone with a Serpa holster that gave themselves Glock leg at the range?
@davidmayer-sommer6539
@davidmayer-sommer6539 3 жыл бұрын
You are vastly more likely to come across a car accident than need to deal with a bullet wound. I took a class from Dark Angel Medical and found it very helpful. Haven't needed to use any of the skills yet and hope I never do but its good to know then.

When you think about it a good first aid course, a good kit, and trauma supplies are going to be useful to you more often over your life than extra guns and extra gun training. Being at least as well prepared for medical emergencies as for gunfights is playing the odds intelligently.
