Had an SMLE. Bought the surplus ammo ,the shop I worked at, had. It was POF (Pakistan Ordnance Factory) and was from the early 1950's. Bought a new (unopened) case of it. First round: "CLICK". Hiiiiiissssssssssssh BOOM! Took it back to our gunsmith and we pulled a projectile. No powder. They used sticks of nitrocellulose...'gun cotton". That shit was obsolete when the French invented smokeless powder in 1884!

Yes. I have seen it happen with a 20ga: gun goes click. Shooter turns around swinging the muzzle our way. People raise their voices about the muzzle swing "STOP!". Then the gun went off pointed up into the air. Second instance: guy shooting an SKS without eye pro. Gun goes click. He cracks the action, sees there is a cartridge, I instructed him to close the bolt, he does, and the then thr rifle fired. Hang fires are a thing.

I've never had a malfunction with my hand gun, but I have a Glock. :) You covered quite a few malfunction remedies, but my favorite jam clearing sequence is still the same one I learned in Ft. Benning 30 years ago. SPORTS. It stands for SLAP the magazine hard into the mag well. PULL back the charging handle. OBSERVE what flies out of the ejection port and look inside the chamber for obvious obstructions. RELEASE the charging handle. TAP the forward assist and finally SHOOT. Just an old grunt aneurysm I learned many moons ago when I was just a wee mud soldier. The worst malfunction I ever had was when the spent shell casing got jammed under the gas tube inside the upper receiver of my M16. It required a full disassembly which is a tedious process because the bolt carrier was stuck halfway inside the buffer tube. Then I had to use my swiss army knife to pry the shell out from under the gas tube. I have never been able to recreate this malfunction but I guess it is common albeit rare occurrence. Anyway, loved this video. A pretty girl with a calming voice speaking over soothing music on a pleasant back ground talking about clearing jammed guns. It's my new form of Zen. Namaste.

yeah.. we literally had ... "misfunctioning pew pews" for the AK and it didnt care. on the AR side we switches springs and buffer tubes and the whole system broke, or we screwed in the BT a single revolution to little and it wont work.. when it works, its nice but in my / our experiences we had much more issues with the AR platform. may have been us, may have been the ARs, may have been bad luck in general... who knows. i think you failure might be something similar to the magic AK failure that Karl from InRange had, where a bullet landed behind the assembly in his AK, however that works... magic i suppose..

@@AkiSan0 I worked for the company that imported the Norinco's. They were good guns. Never cleaned mine and it worked just fine. But I got it before I joined the army. And even after the army I was more of a Mini 14 fan boy than an AR guy. Those old AK's were great. You could get them for $75 apiece if you bought them by the palate full.

Fantastic video! Note on slam-fire, when a firing pin or striker locks in the firing position, it does not become a fully automatic gun, it will fire every round in the magazine whether you are pressing the trigger or not. This is potentially very dangerous. It happened to a friend of mine at a indoor range once. She was able to keep anything bad happening by simply having a good and firm grip. People's thoughts on how often to clean vary quite a bit, but I find it best to clean and inspect my firearm after every trip to the range. This keeps gun failures to the lowest minimum possible.

Of all the factors that have resulted in failures of my firearms, currently it's the tears flowing from my eyes every time I fire and realize that it just cost me $0.80 for a 9mm $1.15 for a 5.56 and $1.25 for a 300 BLK. I feel lump in my throat, and a tear welling up in my eye just thinking about it.

Hang fires, misfires, and squib loads have become very rare with modern manufacturing and quality control, but they still exist. More frightening is the double charge.

I do want to say that hammer follow is where the hammer "follows" the bolt carrier home but does not set off the next round it just gives a dead trigger. The type of malfunction that you were describing is actually a run away firearm and is more predominant in full autos but yes it can happen in semi autos as well.

My understanding is that while it's generally safe to re-use the round, you're taking a chance reusing it. A lot of these issues arise with older ammo that may have somewhat unstable primers. Regardless, reloading it and mechanically cycling it could introduce variables that could lead to the primer (which already has a head-start with the first light strike) to get dinged again by something else when you don't necessarily want it to, thereby potentially creating an out of battery failure. The chances are very slim, but still, I'd rather not gamble with it.

If you have a forward assist, remember SPORTS: Slap the magazine to ensure it is properly seated, Pull back the charging handle, Observe the chamber to look for obstructions, Release the charging handle if/when obstructions are cleared, Tap the forward assist, Squeeze the trigger. If you don't have a forward assist, this acronym is still great for the innuendo.

For double feeds stripping the mag first can work and save time. If you can’t strip the mag you may need to lock the bolt to the rear first, then strip mag, rack the bolt (finger mag well if necessary lol). For bolt override (brass over bolt) you can also aggressively strip mag, angle rifle downwards, hold bolt catch with support hand thumb, then aggressively and rapidly cycle the charging handle with your strong hand.

Another primer problem can be when when they back out or rupture when fired, either from a bad batch or ammo loaded too hot. Happened to me with my Single Action Army. Clearing a revolver jam when the cylinder is seized from a primer being wedged against the frame, you can't knock the case out, and there's still live ammo in the next chamber is... exciting. 😬 Also damn that's a smooth catch on that ejected snap cap, A+

One exception to the AK users, Yugoslav/Serbian guns are designed so as you can eject the round with the safety on, you can even eject the round with a mag in and it will not feed a new cartridge. its a useful feature if you are hiking out and about, was probably good to reduce AD's in service use to

@@danielaramburo7648 You cannot ship ammo by mail, per the USPS. UPS or FedEx will allow ammo to be shipped as ORM-D Small Arm, Cartridges. They have a few rules, but it's pretty simple. UPS has a nice article on their site about it, when you can get from google with the terms "UPS shipping-ammunition.page"

Best training I got in weapons failure was LFI-1. It was simple, large-muscle movements that clear up even ridiculously complicated ones. I've used it under stress during a competiton when I had a failure to eject AND a stovepipe at the same time. I finished the stage on time.

Another excellent video. When I was training with my Tavor, our instructors made sure more than a few of our mags had a round in backwards. Fun times when you got one those. It caused a, uh -clusterfuck. Good for learning how to clear your weapon under pressure.

Haven't seen that personally with a live round, but I have seen it happen with a dummy cartridge while doing handling drills. The lighter weight of the dummy may have made it more likely, but I don't see why it couldn't also happen with a live round. Dimensionally they are identical at least.

Yeah, and you also want to consider the bullet grain, or weight. Firearms tend to have a range (eg, my m1a likes anything from 150-170). If you dip too low, the bullet will probably fire and the action will cycle, but you will notice a difference in your groupings. That's fine if you just want to pewpew, but I wouldn't do that if you're trying to zero a scope.

Additional note on pistol failure to feed short stroking, make sure you have the correct ammunition for your gun! .380ACP can chamber and fire in a 9mm handgun, but won’t cycle the action all the way. I’ve seen more than one newcomer at the range be totally befuddled only to find out they had the entirely wrong ammunition!

2:19 Just want to point out that while the firearm is known to be safe by the owner, it is not visually safe to anyone who might enter the area or room. The safest a firearm can be to someone else, is field stripped, and barring that, a bright colored chamber flag is visibly protruding from the chamber. This was meant for newbs.

Wait until you get a lever action and the round decides to drop on the other side of the block mechanism. That's e really fun malfunction to clear. Almost as fun as a california compliant AR 15 obstruction. Great information on the rest of common (general) malfunctions. Useful for both season and new shooters.

Just a different option to do things, and not at all criticizing the way you do it, cause it obviously works for you. But, I always start with the eject mag, open bolt, observe and clear. Especially when it comes to newer shooters, since I'm pretty terrified of someone firing with a round stuck in the chamber and a second loaded behind it.

did we talk about how practical the leatherman skeletool is? i forget but its my favorite multi tool. i think ive had 5 and still have 3...ya boi be losin shit. the juice was also very good. the squirt is handy. victorinox cadet on the keychain with a nod to nutnfancy paired with any of them can serve you well. my boomer uncle talked shit about mattel barbie ar-15s all my life and swore by the sks because it would slam fire and was milled. those stories were the best then i remember tec-9's and street sweepers being grail guns being a late 80's all 90's kid. those trash ass guns were the rage now im looking at dumping 2 grand into making one of these sweet new modern lever actions or buying that 9mm mini gatling gun from tipmann armory that takes glock mags for 5 grand. one time i bought a keltec. i had an iver johnson tp-22 that didnt have an extractor and didnt think to buy a parts kit off ebay. i owned an amt 380 back up and a colt .25 auto ENOUGH OF MY WEAPON FAILS

it is interesting how in other countries it is much less (or more, depending on your stand) cautious. i personally just drop the mag and rack the slide once to empty and then open to inspect. well, if it is not a lock open variant. else i just drop the mag and go directly into checking mag well and barrel. also i dont care if i point my own gun at myself as long as i checked it before and it is in a safe state (i.e. no mag and locked open). same with others. just dont point it at my chest or face without me saying you can. (i.e. for cam shots or barrel inspections). so far nothing happened and in my opinion a decisive or conscious bad action is better than automated good actions (since you could accidentally do something stupid, just because the action itself had become a habit). one example i use is going down stairs. yes i could have my hand on the handles all the time, doesnt mean it will always prevent me from falling. going down conscious on the other hand forces you to watch you step and be ready. ofc it always depends on the circumstances and your surroundings. i.e. doing something on the range with other people around or doing it in your shed by yourself. TLDR: know what your are doing and do it knowingly. :)
