No boop joke here, just some important information: While 20 decibels in sound reduction doesn't *seem* like a lot, especially given that gunfire is in the 160ish decibel range. It does need to be mentioned that the decibel scale is logarithmic, not linear. While I'm not super sharp on the math, this basically means that a decrease of 20 decibels from 160 to 140 isn't a 12.5% reduction in the amount of energy delivered to the ear drums, it's a one hundred fold reduction.

Exactly. Even surefire filtered plugs are better than nothing. In the filtered mode (not full plug), it won't completely stop hearing loss, but damn it delays it by a shit ton because logarithmic scale. These are light enough to wear all day under any K pots. If you're going to the Q range, put in that blocker tip. When you're out the wire, keep the filters open because bullets ruin you faster than tinnitus. Not that you're likely to shoot out the wire these days especially if you're not in some direct action unit. PKFs can go their entire tour without taking enemy fire.

Buy once, cry once should definitely be considered more for hearing protection. When your hearing is gone it’s gone and you can’t put a price on that.

Until you understand how sound works. Its not the sound itself that causes hearing damage. Its the violent disturbance of molecules. The energy you perceive as sound is still traveling through your body and bypassing all ear protection. Thats why you still hear your weapon very loudly, just not as sharp, but still damaging nonetheless. If you want to save your hearing, stop trying to act like a Tier 1 movie Operator. You're a civilian. The military doesnt live on the shooting ranges. Its counter productive.
@Ashetypebeat
@Ashetypebeat 3 жыл бұрын
@@Murderface666 that’s outright wrong. When you wear a helmet the energy of an impact also doesn’t go away, it still goes into you. That doesn’t mean helmets don’t work, it’s how it’s dispersed that makes the difference. Same with ear pro. If you don’t believe me, well gunshots aren’t the only thing that make loud noises, there’s study after study proving beyond any doubt that, for example, airport workers, lose hearing pretty damn fast without ear pro.

@@EggEnjoyer All helmets arent equal. The average helmet people LARP with it has no audible benefit. If you want real protection, you would take the soft part of a CVC helmet (the original bump helmet) and use that. It will reduce the sound of a 25mm cannon on the Bradley to soften thump. Why? Because the helmet was designed for heavy vehicles, especially track vehicles like 88s, Bradleys, 113s, Abrams, etc.

Bit of a late reply, but there's a specific exercise you can do, by placing your hands over the back of your head, with your palms over your ears, and flicking your index fingers against your head, which can relieve tinnitus. You can find videos online demonstrating. Lots of people don't know about it, but it can be amazingly effective.

I feel like the amount of damage a gunshot can do to someone's ears is often times incredibly overlooked, especially legally. Yes, big boom-boom noises alone can save you and/or your family's life in a pinch in a home invasion situation, but if you can't hear what the police are telling you afterwards, then that's a bit of a problem, isn't it? ATF didn't quite think that one through...

I am fortunate enough to have my ear pro provided to me by the Air National Guard, so I have both the Howard Lights, and a set of Peltors (don’t know what gen) Because I use my Peltors for my Air National Guard job I try not to take them home for fear of forgetting them for drill weekend. However, the few times I did have them at home and I used them for shooting they’re absolutely amazing! The Howard Lights I never use for my job so I brought them home and they’re what I typically use for shooting. Definitely a huge step down from the Peltors, but they get the job done. I’ll probably upgrade from the foam cups to the gel cups sometime in the future!

I wear the Howard Leigh’s impact pro (NRR 30) over Mack’s maximum protection foam earplugs (NRR 33). Make sure you use the earplugs correctly reading the instructions, pulling up and back on the ears while inserting a rolled, narrow plug in and holding for 40 seconds. The plugs should be fully inserted and flush with the ears when in correctly. Shot several hours on an indoor range yesterday with only pistols, and they worked great. Not sure the noise amplification was enough to hear conversation well honestly… as the Mack plugs when used correctly are very very effective towards protecting against loud sound. Hearing pro is so important I think it’s often overlooked in the firearms/shooting environment. Just ‘any ear pro’ is not sufficient it has to be good enough for the shooting environment, especially indoors.

I'm running with some Walker Razers, Being that i've always used the orange ear inserts for the first 20 or so years of my life, these walkers work wonderfully and i am glad to own them. I've used them in rain once or twice and never had an issue with them, the audio is okay and good enough to speak to the person next to you while guns are shooting. I will say that the battery life leaves a bit to be desired but they do their job wonderfully even when the battery is dead so i can't really complain. Works much better than ear inserts falling out and not realizing for 20 minutes.

I know it's been a hot minute since this went up, however I couldn't help but contribute to the conversation a bit. Excellent video As always, off the rip. I wanted to say that I've been using my Earmor M31s for about a year and a half now and they've been pretty alright, so long as you're using some good gell inserts and using a cementing agent on the cups. I've retired them to my airsoft kit in recent months and mounted them on an abs bump helmet. I was getting about 23ish db reduction put of them which was pretty decent for the price. I've since moved on to a Retevis EHK007 with integrated boom mic, 7.1mm jack, and a ptt to use with my uv5r. This rig is beautiful for the price. As advertised it took 2x AAs right out the box and performed perfectly. Supposedly they provide up to 28db reduction, but I'd say it's closer to 25-26, making subsonic 22 through a can a hollywood whisper. Paired with fully articulated arc mounted arms, they are a dream to work with. Coming in under $100 USD, they kinda rule. They're also comtac ii/iii patterned, for more universal fits. Keep up the informative and fun content (loved the new AK cleaning video)!

100dB of sound reduction is quite literally impossible. Because of bone vibration conduction the maximum possible noise reduction (doubling up with foam earplugs and industrial earmuffs) is somewhere in the 35-40dB range.

Definitely not "just as good" but it's okay for the price. I wish I knew about that $100 headset you mentioned before buying the above setup a few years back. Very good info, when i was inside we didn't use hearing protection and i really missed it; specially indoors, inside ships, working with the cavalry, with the grenades or the LAW-72. The best that i could get was two 9mm empty cases and wasn't enough, we had a lot of 'piiiiiiii' time, so much that we communicated by hand signals by several minutes. I think that the money spent on good quality hearing protection it's a good expense, in your health and protection.

I got a bit of tinnitus after my foamies weren't absolutely perfectly squared away and I put a few rounds through a Saiga-12. Great news: The new gas regulator worked perfectly. Bad news: Welp that's definitely some hearing loss I just suffered and my ear felt absolutely Wrong for three days afterwards. It really feels the margin of error with foam plugs is unforgiving, and I even knew to roll 'em up a little bit before sticking them in so they'd expand in the ear canal. Nowadays I'm firmly on the Comtac train. There's just no going back.

That said the batteries are a hassle to change and the QC isn’t what it should be. A few weeks after initial purchase they where crackling and cutting out. I sent them back to the distributor to fix who ended up sending them back to the factory. Since then I’ve had no more issues although my coworker has a pair that faced similar issues. Over all disappointing considering the cost but they are sorted now (fingers crossed!).

I run both liberators and sordins (libs on my helmet, sordins off helmet) and my biggest gripe is the comms upgrade kit being an additional 250. It's good if you're working with a restrictive monthly budget and have to upgrade later. But super lame in terms of accessibility out of the box and realistically saves you no money long term over comtacs. However, the comfort and sound fidelity are incredible, the buttons are simple and tactile, and I haven't had a negative experience with them in extensive use over the past year outside of the comms capability. Take it for what it's worth, I'm just a range and airsoft larper such as most of you.

Hey, great video! Comtac Vs are AAA battery not AA, though. Re: Sordins. Used Sordins and Comtacs for the better part of my adult life, short version is if you do not need comms capability or helmet mounting they are pretty good ear protectors. There are single comm and dual comm Sordins out there, especially secondhand, but typically their price was similar to Comtac 3s so I think there was not much of a market for it. I have a single comm version; it works, but it is not modulsr and swappable like Comtacs. FWIW, they rate lower sound protection wise because they are lower profile than Comtacs and a little easier to shoulder a rifle with. They also have some foam ear seals stock, not gel like some nicer model Comtacs; in my experience gel seals like Noisefighters help the sound attenuation a fair bit. But the last gen SWATCOM / TCI Liberators were Sordin bodies with different guts, so they're really not that bad; also think they are not so fragile. Durability wise I think they are fine, the battery compartment is metal and the attachment points for the headband is a thick gauge steel wire. Headband is a little oddly designed, definitely not as comfortable as the Comtac style. But overall you would be hard pressed to break them by dropping them or kicking them around in a truck bed / gear chest. Contrast that with Earmor M32s, I have accidentally broken the battery compartment with finger strength. And they have a proprietary PTT anyway. Given they are $90-ish I would save a little more for $150-180 secondhand Sordins and the Code Red Signal 21s for an improvised comms headset personally. The main weakness is converting them to helmet mount. The attaching method is not modular and if you use Unity MARKs you lose vertical adjustment for earcups. Mine are currently mounted on AMP arms with AXL RAC Links and work pretty well. For $200 they are good as purely ear defenders, but secondhand Comtac 3s are best value in my book still.

So for the Sordin Supreme, from my research actually is the opposite of what you found. According to the chart on their site (Labeled Certificate - Sordin Supreme MIL CC when scrolling all the way down on the Supreme page), the Noise Reduction Rating is only 17 at 500hz, and gunshots primarily are in the range of 800hz and higher. At that point they have 25db of Noise Reduction and higher, up to potentially 37 for some frequencies. Theyre pretty solid overall I'd say, though the other two problems of the battery compartment being annouing to get them out of and durability I don't know about.

Interesting topic that doesn't get talked about too much. When I go to the range I usually double up by wearing ear plugs and earmuffs on top of that no matter what I'm shooting. It could be a 22 long rifle or 5.56. my friend though doesn't take it as seriously. Once he shot 500 rounds of 9 mm without ear protection because he forgot it at home.

I wound up auto generating a transcript so I could ctrl+F the info. It would be so helpful if you added even just a list of the items you named, if not even your whole review of each.

Okay OSHA says anything over 120 dB can cause immediate hearing damage. Here is what I don't get, an AR-15 is 165 dB so you use those 23 dB Peltors Contact 5's which means 165 - 23 = 142 dB which is way over the 120 dB that OSHA says can lead to immediate hearing damage. So is your hearing damaged?

She's right fellers. Once my pops tried to show me how to russian roulette is played. He started loading the gun and I was like... Dude... This is a bad idea, plus I already know how this effed up game is played. But he wanted to show off anyways... Boomers lol. Moron effed up and fired the gun off by accident in the kitchen. Shot a hole through the cabinet, and into the side of the stove. Luckily it didn't go through the stove and into his Camaro in the garage the next room over lololol. That would have been... also bad. More bad lol. It was a 357. The second the gun went off was the same second I was screaming at my dad. I remember yelling WTF DID YOU DO YOU???? .... Then I saw him talking back at me but I couldn't hear anything other than a big fat EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE sort of ringing in my ears. I couldn't even hear the words I was saying. Such a weird feeling lol. Didn't fade away for like 10 mins lol. So yeah fellers. Protect ur eyes. Had a 5 year old in my shop screaming earlier and that was bad enough lol. Don't try to be a big tough guy and act like loud noises don't phase you in any way what so ever. Being able to hear is uhh... Nice lol. Trust me.
