But yesterday my excitement for the movie pushed me over the edge, so I walked over to the game store and got it. And now...thanks for the video! Fantastic video Crabbok. Been considering getting into the game, but due to budget issues I wasn't sure where to start. Always liked the look of the TIEs, so was a bit overwhelmed on how to get a good squad going. Anywho, have a sub and a handful of likes! Keep up the great videos!

Nice video, good info on those ships. I just started, I bought the core set, Slave I and the Falcon. Next I will probably buy another core set and then the TIE and X-Wing expansions. Oh, and a case (Plano tackle box).

a weird build with a bomber that worked pretty well for me was,.. bomber with jonus + determination =23points---- firespray with 3 skill pilot+ gunner+heavy laser cannon+ stealth device =48 points, interceptor with turr + veteran instincts + stealth device =29 points i would keep the firespray and jonus close to each other "range 1" so i could reroll up to 2 dice ,.. on laser shots from the firespray ,.if by chance i wiffed i got a second whole attack with the gunner,.. if they got within range 1 i still had primary attack with a 4 roll because of range modification,... i turned turr loose to sweep in wide flaking position in behind whoever tried to get behind the jonus firespray team,. starting him on the other side of the board from jonus and the firespray and kinda making them choose early who they wanted to try and hit. what it tended to end up in the 3 times i played this squad,was that if they went after the firesrpray it's guns plus turr did a number on em with all the rerolls the firespray got between jonus and gunner rerolls,.. if on the other hand they went after turr,.. he would use his manuverbilty and the stealth device to be hard to hit and keep out their arc most times and could lure them to range 2 or 3 at least for the firespray to get full use of it's stacked up bonuses,.. i found the stealth device made the firespray pretty defensible for first few turns, the last match they went after jonus in the bomber and i used the low pilot skill of the firespray piolt to plunk him down in their flight paths,.. this turned out to be a huge tactical advantage,.. usually of course value move last shoot first,..but in this build the huge base footprint of the firespray made a excellent roadblock for turr to know exactly where to be to be in firing position on the enemy. causing them to ram the firespray not be able to shoot it,.. shoot their shields off with turr or outright kill them, then mop up with the firespray shot, while circling jonus in the bomber on the opposite side of the traffic jam. though this is not my favorite squad to run ,.. it is a LOT of fun as an imp player to get so many rerolls on attack dice like Han in the falcon in certain situations,..and YES my gunner came into play in every match. p.s. without stealth devices i wouldn't play this build at all ,.. it really was the add card that made it all hold together long enough to get enough shots off to blow em away.

Interceptor and Lamba over Advanced? I have to disagree, Vader is a must have....(with both wings)

The Vader that comes on the Lambda gets way more use in tournaments than the TIE Advanced Vader. Not to say that I don't like the advanced, but for a NEW player - if they start out flying advanced's alot they are going to start out loosing the majority of their games. The Interceptor is easily one of the best ships in the game, and the upgrades that come with the Lambda are crucial.

Crabbok Too true. Advanced players are crying for a aces pack for them since they are garbage compared to the other ships in the line. Fine ships, at best, but fine isn't going to win games or provide the flexibility you would have.

RobotsGreatWar2 Yeah, I am looking forward to that. I have a ship pre-ordered. I hope the X-1 title really shakes up the meta. An Accuracy Corrector on an advanced sounds pretty cool to me. Guaranteed 2 hits per turn. Maybe Advanced Sensors would be good, but I think that the Accuracy Corrector is going to go underused. Pretty cool meta shift coming. Though, I don't get to play much.

First off, good video. I just bought the core set and haven't even played but like the X-Wing, E-Wing, Tie Fighter and Tie Interceptors. You said near the end that you got some Tie Advanced for $6. Where do you find these deals? I'd been following the price for a while at my local game stores and finally bit the bullet and bought the core set but if I can expand for cheaper, that's cool.

Matthew Tilleman coolstuffinc has the best prices in Orlando, and they ship. However, their daily sales are amazingly good. I check it every day and once in awhile an X-Wing ship will be on there for something like 6 or 7 bucks. Hasn't happened lately, but check them out. miniature market is another good one.

Thank you for this. I've been wanting to get started with X-Wing, but it's a a little overwhelming. Beyond getting the core set, I had no idea what to buy first. Your video is a huge help. Question, though. Now that the aces are coming out, would yous still recommend two core sets, or just one set and filling it out with the aces?

I'll probably always advocate for at least 2 core sets for multiple reasons. First thing is dice - you kinda need 6 dice of each type as you play more advanced games. I've rolled 6 attack dice with wedge before. Also it gives you extra templates for movement, an extra damage deck.... these things wear over time so that is important as well. Finally, the value for the 3 ships. It is cheaper to buy this as a 3-pack than to buy 3 individual ships. You are going to want multiple TIE fighters and X-Wings.

I'm a VERY late adopter, wanting to go Scum & Villainy (Slave 1, Y-wing, and Z95s to start, maybe eventually get Shadowcaster and some other cool fighters).

Mark Munson I've never done any missions. In fact, i don't know anyone who's done them. People in my local area simply do regular 100 point battles. There is so much variety in regular builds, that I don't think any of us really have had time to try missions.

Thanks for the video, going to check out the rest of the channel next. I have a couple questions though. Can this game be good without Slave 1 and the Falcon? Could those 2 ships be stored in their original packaging? My son is into this game, so I'm thinking of getting him the starter, a pair or so of add on ships, and the battlefoam tray that fits into the starter set box. It will hold a decent bit, but not the two larger ships mentioned. Thanks for the video!

You certainly don't NEED the larger ships at all. There are even more smaller ships out now that weren't covered in my video. I'd go so far as to say the majority of games played do NOT involve the large ships.

Thanks. I'm thinking we'll get the starter, along with possibly a tie and x wing add on. Others I've looked at are the headhunter or e wing for rebels, and tie advanced or interceptor for imperials. The starter with 2-4 add on ships and the battle foam insert tray are where I'm thinking we'll start. The add on x wing and tie fighter have some upgrade cards and such that aren't in the starter box right?

Isaiah Furrow Right. Especially the pilots. If you are going with a TIE fighter expansion, keep in mind that you'll need more imperial ships to fill out a list. Look into the newer Wave 4 stuff, like the Defender or Phantom, or the classics like the Interceptor, or also look at Imperial Aces.

watched some more reviews this morning and a few showed what came in the expansions. I'm thinking a TIE, an Advanced, and an Interceptor. For rebels, another X-Wing, and then I'm not sure, have to look into that further. I think just to have the model, I'll get the Falcon, but not until later, for my birthday. Which is better when building a rebel force: Purchasing the A- and B-Wing expansions or purchasing the Rebel Aces set? And likewise for building an Imperial force, is it better to purchase two Interceptor expansions or the Imperial Aces set?

In the case of Rebels I'd say Rebel Aces - the best B-Wing pilot is there. A-Wings have great pilots in either set but Keyan Farlander in his B-Wing is FAR better than any other B-Wing pilot so he tips the scales. In the case of the Empire however, I can argue that going with individual interceptors are the better choice. For starters, you get the cheap 18 point Alpha Squadron pilot there which DOESN'T come in Imperial Aces... plus you get Soontir Fel, one of the best pilots ever. You DO want to still eventually get Imperial Aces for the Interceptor title, which will work towards making Soontir Fel even better... plus it has some great pilots of it's own... but if you are on a budget that's what I suggest for starters.

Everything's expensive down here. (Oz) We'd never get a ship for $6 even on special. I have most of the "first choice" buys. I don't have a Slave 1. Might be next. I think I'll get a second base pack. Be good to have enough to pit squadrons against each other. Nice video though.

CoolstuffInc has them on daily sale every once in awhile. I believe that minature market sometimes has them for very cheap as well. I check miniaturemarket and coolstuffinc.com for daily sales all the time, they sometimes have X-Wing stuff for super cheap. There are squad builders out there too, if you google "X-Wing Squad builder" you'll find a few, that can help you design a build. I'm also working on a more up-to-date version of the What to Buy Next video, which will include all the newer releases.

granMEXICO Someday perhaps. There simply isn't enough product at the moment to do a whole video based on scum. The best I can tell you is that IG-88s are popular, and the Starviper is almost never used. The M3A Interceptor is also fairly good, but it is something of a swarm ship so it is tempting to get 3 or more.

+Brandon Rodgers It has a fair amount of red, but it also has a 1 hard turn, which is pretty rare for the rebels. And considering multiple B-Wing pilots actually benefit from stress, those red manuevers aren't all that bad.

I'm not a fan of the falcon - just gets stuck and shot to bits by multiple TIEs - It's a nice model but if I was on a tight budget I'd give it a miss. Apologies to the Kyle Katarn fans out there but the HWK is a total waste of space - maybe just about ok for thematic play but not competitive and a pretty shitty model to boot - unless you feel compelled to collect the full set, spend your money elsewhere. A-wings are one of the most fun ships in the rebel fleet - but not very competitive for the points cost. Y-wings can be fun - especially with Dutch and Ion turrets - but other ships give a slightly better bang for buck. X-wings and B-wings are by far the best investment. If you shop around you could get 2 base sets, an x-wing expansion, a B-wing and the soon-to-be-released Rebel Aces set for not a lot more than $100, giving you 3 x-wings, 2 B-wings and an A-wing - add a Y wing and you're looking at $110 - $120 ....ish You can build some pretty fun, flexible, and competitive squads with that (B-wings with Adv Sensors are unstoppable and relatively cheap) - not to mention the fact that you'd have 4 TIEs left over that you could potentially trade for more rebel ships or sell on eBay to get some cash back. if you want extra cards, there are x-wing wiki style sites which give the details of additional upgrade cards so you can make your own proxies - which are usually fine anywhere except official tournaments

Saying "It just get's stuck" suggests that you have not been flying it well. Additionally, you criticize the HWK for competitive play - which is fine, but Falcons see a TON of competitive play. Just because a ship can be defeated by a TIE Swarm doesn't make it a bad ship - EVERY ship gets defeated by a TIE Swarm : TIE Swarms are universally the best builds in the game.

Crabbok I'm looking at this from the perspective that someone new to the game with limited funds might have. Think about it - if you only had about $25-$30 to spend after buying a copy (or two) of the base game, would that be better spent buying one Falcon, or a combination of two smaller ships? For my money I reckon that - despite the awesomeness of the Falcon - I'd have more fun to begin with, by getting say, a B-wing and an A-Wing - and save the Falcon for next payday.

I disagree. For one, I think a new player would really like the LOOK of the Falcon - it is one of the best looking models in the game and really makes a game FEEL like Star Wars - and additionally, if you ONLY have a core set you can field a full 100 point squad with just one X-Wing and the Falcon - AND it is competitive! It is probably the cheapest tournament-quality build, and also easy enough to only focus on 2 ships for a beginner. You have a point in that it might be more diverse to get 2 other ships, but I think the Falcon is extremely friendly to beginners due to it's volume of supporting cards and the turret.
