I rarely get calls for standard services like ceiling fan installations, it's always custom repair and work so I never got a chance to really try to find the market price for a ceiling fan. However,I have a minimum charge of $250 (I'm in CT) that I disclose to the client beforehand and that covers about 2 hours of work (which I don't tell the client so they don't assume that I charge $125/h). With set up and clean up, small talks and so on, I'd be around 1 hour to replace a fan. I offer to do some other services around the house and give examples. Sometimes they do have some, sometimes they don't. Installing a fan might be "easy" but you are on a ladder, you have to carry it above your shoulder, it has an electrical liability and it has a lot of mechanical liability to it too. So charge according to this instead of the time you spend on the job. When you buy a $20 pizza, you don't pay this price according to the cost to make it (about $1-4) or the time they spend to do so (a few min), you pay for it for the quality of the end product, the difficulty to reproduce at home (best pizzas cook at 900-1000F) and other aspects.

So what would two ceiling fans? Double it? You wouldn't add driving time and what ever else twice?
@handymanjourney
@handymanjourney 11 ай бұрын
Not if you are doing both ceiling fans at the same location, the only thing I would add is more disposal if we are hauling it off

@@handymanjourney Alan, I respect you and frequently watch your videos. You are an honest person, based on your apparent character. Incidentally, if l were to charge $50-$60 hourly, l would lose most of my clients. Instead, l charge just $25 per hour. I'm poor, but l am usually kept busy.

I would push back a little, Do you think you may loose some of your current clients but do you think you will gain higher end clients with a higher rate? Thanks for your support!

If you have 4 jobs today and each job takes an hour, do you charge 1 hour each? I find myself changing at least 1.5 hours because of travel time.
@handymanjourney
@handymanjourney 11 ай бұрын
You definitely need to account for travel time and fuel, we do this by including a mileage charge on jobs, if it's an hour job we typically will charge an hour but we try to be more efficient

I agree 100% I base all my estimates @ 95/hr with a minimum of $150 for an T&M job. Fans come in so many shapes, sizes and difficulty. So with that being said I would probably go with $150 for the 1st fan and 95/hr after that. You can still make decent money and guarantee not hurting yourself.

BTW, i live in a relatively modest income area where most people like to hire the 20/hr guy off Craigslist. I do no advertising other than my truck wrap, business cards word of mout and repeat customers. If someone tells you so and so will do it for X, tell them to call that guy. You and you alone are the only one who can create and set your worth!!!

What are the regulations in the US? In Canada you would have to be a licensed electrician to do any electrical work Handyman cannot do electrical work in Canada unless They are also also a licensed electrician

I do a minimum 4 hours charge @40/hr. $160/4hrs Doing a ceiling fan may take 1 hour but to take the time out of your day to go do it you need to make more than $40. I wouldnt do ANY job for under $100. Also, lots can go wromg with a ceiling fan replacement if the house is older, has bad wiring, no junction box, high ceilings, fan wobbble, etc.. You are gonna need time to deal woth UNFORSEEN ISSUES. No one can see everything thats gonna be unexpected before the job starts so keep that in mind. Most people act like it should be easy but they domt take into account the unexpected.. like a trip to the store which generally takes 1 hour round trip. Charge for a block of time that allows for the unforseen to happen and give youraelf enough time to troubleshoot whatever arises.

My concern with your billing is that if I'm your client, I have you for 3 more hour so keep doing work. I still have you for 3 more hours. It happened to me once. I never use the word "hour". Price starts at a 200 for a fan.

Easiest way to price most jobs is to simply call around and get prices from other people in the area. Then get an average and either charge that or match what others charge. Simple homie.

But is that enough to pay all your expenses and make a profit, you need to know this or you won't be in business very long

@@handymanjourney Ofcourse, that's simple business 101. My handyman jobs are priced by the job and level of skill. 1 hour of roofing work is not the same as replacing a ceiling fan for an hour. The reason hourly works for you is because of the nazi regulations you have to follow in CA just to make a living.

Only the most basic ceiling fans can be installed in 30 minutes. I have had installs that take as little as 20 minutes to as much as 5 hours. The 5 hour jobs usually include setup and cleanup. Thankyou for mentioning all those other things that go in to the time. Thanks, Russ, Electrician from Oregon.

I don’t think there’s anywhere that should be charging less than $80 an hour as a legit licensed business. A ceiling fan takes longer than a toilet for me with the the parts you have to throw together.
