These strategies are the ways that I was able to increase my grad funding before my first year was over! Funding your PhD can be extremely stressful, hopefully these grad funding strategies can help you if you find yourself getting accepted into a grad program with NO Financial support!

What if you’ve already accepted the offer… can you negotiate after you start your graduate program

Hi! you still have the ability to negotiate but it may not have as much as an impact. For me I accidently negotiated because I honestly thought I wouldnt be able to go if I didn't get funding. So in a way I kind of suggested that I would take away my acceptance. I wouldn't suggest bluffing or sounding rude, but after a month or two of classes I was given about 11k for the year. This averaged to about 1k a month which was not very helpful in the long run hahahah but it is still possible. I have a whole funding playlist that may be helpful to you too! Just leave! No financials is a huge sign of no commitment from the department to your success. Of course, you can complete the degree as a self-funded student, if you just want a PhD title. However, most of the perks of a PhD are by recommendations or nominations made by your mentors and department. No funding is a clear signal of the lack of those most important components of a PhD.

I actually totally agree! This has been very aligned with my experience lol ... Though some people may have support outside of the people making the financial decision and may need to build their community. (Which is kind of my experience) I had a lot of success and won awards and what not from other departments/programs/initiatives so I still got the mentorship and "status" but it wasn't really from my department. Which was hard at first. UCLA was the only school I got accepted to, and I just assumed all PhDs are funded... until I found out I was wrong lol. But I do think if you have options or the patience it is best to pick a school that funds and supports you! It makes the whole process much more rewarding.
