I think instead people being encouraged to find their passion in life, they should be encouraged to find their purpose in life. And then find the best job that will allow them to flourish in their purpose. Over time the purpose becomes a passion.

Exactly, reason why I chose a career in healthcare. My sister was born with a rare syndrome, her existence is an enigma. I feel like her,my life experience and covid19 was my calling. I want to cure others, I am good at helping people mentally and physicially. I was bullied when I was young due to my background and I believe I can inspire others. I love promoting mental health and health in general. So yes due to all those factors and more I believe this is my calling, I am becoming a nurse!

I majored in Fine Art. I didn't know what I really wanted to do but I knew I liked art so I went for that. I knew it wasn't going to be a money earner, so I cut the idea of an expensive art school right away. I went to community college and don't regret for a second what I learned there. The biggest thing about art is they don't tell you how much of it is going to be marketing yourself. That's more important than the art itself. But now I do want to go back to school to get a degree in something more substantial. At least now I'm older and more mature and have some idea of where I want to go.

Love the video! So often people will either say to find a job that pays well or to find a job you're passionate about, while few actually acknowledge that there's usually a middle ground and that different people have different hopes and goals for their lives. Two personal insights: - Sometimes passion can be a fickle thing; you don't always get to "find" your passion, you have to build it. Don't immediately give up on an option because you don't feel passionate about it right away. - If you have a few careers you're deciding between, choose the road that has more options. Unless you are certain that a specific job is what you want to do for the rest of your life, try to get into a career path that you can move around in so you don't get stuck in a job you don't like that you can never deviate from.

I wasn't sure what I wanted to do right out of high school. I went to college for chemistry, as I loved chemistry in high school. I did a couple of years, and found it wasn't my passion. So I quit, got a job in the oil patch, made good money, but it wasn't for me long term. This was in the early 80's. Then, I got my break, a community college hosted a programming class in our little town, and I found my passion, and something I could make a living at. Thanks to Ali Nemat - the teacher that gave me encouragement.!! To make a long story short, I went to work for a pipeline company, did quite a few different field positions, then took a job as a controller operating the lines, from there moved into control systems, and now install new control system software at a high salary! So, I kind of did what you describe, but the hard way! I never earned a degree, but took all the technical classes that I could that I found interesting. Now, at 63, I just finished a class on energy through the University of Illinois that I'll put to use somehow! Thanks for the great content.

When figuring out what salary is good enough you also should take COL into account. 70k is great in most places, but high paying jobs are more common in high COL areas, so 70k may not really be enough in those areas. It may be enough for one person, but if you know that a family depends on you, then it may not be enough :/ But otherwise, thank you for sharing this balanced approach. Realistically, I believe any major can be a good choice IF you don't pay an arm and a leg for it with student debt. Some can major in literature or liberal arts and pursue their passion without the need for a super high paying job granted that they don't have to spend a lifetime paying off mortgage level debt simply from College.

I need some advice please ! I live in Morocco where there is only one university based on the american system that offers degrees in IS/IR. I chose to study International Studies as a major in my Bachelor (my first semester is going to start this september) and I got a decent scholarship. But I am extremely worried about job opportunities in this field. I haven't even started studying yet and I already have anxiety. Initially, I chose to study International studies because it is broad and will give me the opportunity to know what subject interests me the most etc. But as you said, jobs are very limited in this field so I guess I will choose Business Administration as a minor. What do you think ? What do you advise me to chose as a minor and Master ? (My goal is to be able to work in International Trade or even do a Master in International Law for exemple. I'm open to all these possibilities). PS: I already speak 3 languages fluently (French, English, Arabic) and plan on learning two more (Spanish and Hebrew)

I like that he mentions, not even his research is perfect, take things with a grain of salt. His information and the way he presents it is helpful. He gives you at least the general background of what some resources say, which is exactly what anyone with common sense needs. Instead of pointing the finger at him, get a general groundwork of the information he is giving, research, and see what you want from there. He's a good career coach, he knows it's ultimately subjective, but information can be shared enough to give people an idea of a direction. I also don't think some of the sources are perfect but it gives a good framework, he does good with that

@maxstephenson76295 жыл бұрын
Hi Shane, I wanted to know your opinion on some of the career choices I'm considering. Here's my current situation: I am a senior in high school. I'm incredibly passionate about my instrument, the trumpet, and music in general. I generally have been pretty successful with music so far and and optimistic but still slightly doubtful about a career in music. I have the unique ability to go to a private 4 year tuition free. I also might have the opportunity to attend the Eastman School of Music if I get accepted after my auditions (which is one of the best music schools in the world but would cause me to go into pretty deep debt). I want to give music my best shot but also want something to fall back on if it doesn't work out. So, I'm considering a "Music with an outside field" program and studying either accounting or finance as my outside field. I could then consider getting a masters in that field if I really enjoyed it. I really enjoy learning about personal finance and investing so that's why I might wanna consider one of those fields. Does this sound like a safe plan? What's keeping me optimistic is the fact that I could risk getting the major in music without going into debt.
@ShaneHummus5 жыл бұрын
Accounting or finance are both good choices and are pretty solid. With regards to music, if it's for you then it's for you. You just have to be creative in planning so you can make money with it. Best of luck to you Max Stephenson

Once again, great video Shane, this really helped me and I'm sure it helped the people you are referring to. Personally, I had been thinking about my current situation in majoring in English and figured out a way to I guess, make the best out of the situation. I was thinking of going into Technical Writing (the pay and job growth looks well) but it involves having Technical skills. Back in High School, I had a brief history with coding so I figured to go into Programming and decided to take CS courses in the future. I also currently suggested myself to probably get a minor in Computer Science so it can complement the major (a lot of companies in Tech Writing positions want people with STEM degrees, not English) so this can help and if I can cannot go into Technical Writing, my next plan is that with my minor it can help me to easily transition into Web Development and possibly find a way to do Technical Writing online like freelancing just to make extra cash. My only concern is whether or not making this choice will increase my chances of receiving student loan debt or my time being on campus (I hate the whole Academia setting. I love to learn but hated School all my life.). I also intend on getting at least one internship while enrolled on campus and maybe one more after graduation for experience. If I cannot get the minor or afford it my next plan is to probably get certifications in Technical Writing and probably Web Development (I heard certifications are useful in both fields) and also get an AAS in CIS or something related to Programming online to transition to Web Development if Technical Writing does not work out. In the meantime, I'll be doing what I have always wanted to do, write stories to entertain and possibly educate and influence people in some way. Great video. Seeing this motivated me to execute my plans but I'll have to scope everything out more clearly and what I should do later. Thank you for your content on this subject. Students and Adults really need to see this.

Technical Writing. Journalism is on a major decline right now but if you are interested in just plain writing, Technical Writing is your best option. A lot of writing jobs are on decline right now but Technical Writing is fine since it is Tech based. See if the campus you are enrolling into has courses, certifications, or minors in Technical Writing (also known as Technical Communications). I would also suggest searching the field and having some type of knowledge in tech which is up to you (Programming, Engineering, Medical, Banking). Also, don't be afraid of Math. When I was younger I was actually discouraged to pursue Math based subjects due to my slow learning ability on the subject. However, I had realized that if I just pay more attention and place effort into the subject, I realized that I did Bette than I thought. I was able to get am A in Geometry and Algebra ii in High School and looking back on that made me realize that point. So, don't be intimidated by the subject, just teach yourself and believe me, you'll love the subject and realize why didn't you major in this subject instead.

Good to know that you are passionate in history. Literature and history have similarities, too. Anyway, great video, now I am thinking about entering in technology or technopreneurship. PS you're so cute, I can't help it! Sorry!

Hey Shane, great channel. Best of luck. Hope your passion will pay out soon and you will share your success path video when u reach mln subs and all the perks that comes with it. Starting a channel in English soon. Would be happy to connect with you. My passion is in hr. But I got demotivated once the pandemic started. Seeing that high profile top managers don't care for employees health expecting them to clock in at 9-5. I have a little kid who was at home for 5 months when daycares were close, and my colleagues were proud to do everything faster than me and doing more work than me, while I basically had a baby on my shoulder hanging the whole day. Had to choose what is the priority to me and happy I left the stupid office world. Eye openning era. 🤞

I'm only in highschool but I'm thinking about pursuing a master's degree in business. Is that a good idea and if so what jobs should I go for?
@LegoMonkeycat5 жыл бұрын
From what I know, the most common graduate business degree is a Master's in Business Administration (MBA). To get an MBA, you'll almost certainly need a Bachelor's degree first. Your Bachelor's doesn't necessarily have to be in business. It might even be a good idea to gain some additional non-business skills by studying something else in undergrad. I have heard that it is important to keep up your math skills, both for the GMAT (the standardized test you take to get into MBA programs), and for math courses in an MBA program. As to whether it's a good idea or which jobs you should pursue, I think that's a question you'll need to answer yourself by thinking about what interests you and why, and perhaps how you could make that into a career. Please take everything I've said here with a grain of salt. I'm just a high school senior and certainly no expert on MBA programs. Best of luck in high school and in thinking about your future!

@TMartins3795 жыл бұрын
Worthless. There is nothing in the criminal justice field that requires a degree. Police, correction officer or detention counselors. None require a degree. May be probation officers, but pay is extremely shitty.

If it's not specialized, then no. If it is (i.e. Biotechnology or Biopharm) it's worth it if you have good connections and live in a good area. Get an Emphasis to show you actually specialize in a specific field rather than knowing little bits of all of Bio. Biotechnology is better because it specializes in Technology applied towards health. Usually you work with Electrical Engineers to get all the circuitry right in R and D. General Bio is not worth it unless you're doing it to prepare for the masters in health professions (PA or PT) where you knock out all the prerequisite classes.
