My eye doctor hit on my when I was 17, he was in his forties. He actually called my home and asked me on a date, then held my vision prescription hostage until I agreed to meet with him. I placed a report against him and was told I was in a long line of girls to have done the same. They also told me that he was required by law to give me my prescription. It was confusing and creepy time for me, but I felt empowered by at least making a report. This was in the late 70's.

When my little one was being wheeled in for surgery, she was almost knocked out, but right before she told the very handsome Australian surgeon, how much she loved him. She was about 5, and the wonderful surgeon held her hand and told her he loved her too. He wasn't a perv. Just the kindest dr. I'd ever seen.

As an RN for 30 years, I witnessed a “physician” inappropriately address a patient. I redirected, asking the physician a question- either about the diagnosis to better understand… anything appropriate at that time & saying it in a cordial way. I worked on the MBU at that time in the hospital, and reported my observations, facts and witnessed communication as well as the discussion redirect and concern. I appreciate that the Director of Woman’s Services followed up. I will Never witness inappropriate or threatening situations without ethical follow up. Thank you for being a physician that’s trustworthy & ethical.

When I was a youngish nurse and pregnant working in the OR there was a urologist who used to periodically come up behind me before he scrubbed in and put his hands on my uterus over my scrubs and feel for the fundal height. I've had a specialist take me into a private room and thought that he was examining me further. His PA walked in & he jumped back from me. That's when I realized he was going up my shirt for other reasons. I was in such shock & disbelief. A year or so down the road, I reported it to the College of Physicians (In Canada). The burden of proof would have been on me & it would have been a long drawn out traumatic process for me, only to maybe have him watched if I could prove it at all. We also have Dr.'s up here who have been charged with not only sexually abusing their patients but also being incredibly cruel to them. They still have their licenses & are still practicing. The way I see it, is that they should be in jail. There's almost no justice. Sorry it happened to you too. Years ago, I also had a chiropractor being very inappropriate. I wish I would have spoken up, but again I was in shock & frozen. His wife was even the receptionist there at the time. There needs to be more accountability & consequences to actions. Patients need to be believed.

If you have had a doctor or nurse do something inappropriate, what do you think of announcing it in the waiting room as you leave? I'm an older woman who doesn't want to put up with stuff like that (and I'm frumpy and overweight so I don't think anyone would hit on me), so there's a chance I would speak up. I heard a story this summer of a married couple who were both sick with a cough or similar respiratory illness and went to see the same doctor. Hubby went first, then the wife. The nurse told her to undress and put on the paper gown, which was puzzling. The doctor comes in and checks her over and does a breast exam too. When she gets out in the waiting room she asked her husband if he had to take his clothes off, and he said no. Cue her becoming livid. When she saw the doctor at the front counter, she yelled at him and called him out on that and said his face got very red. That might do as much or more than trying to get him in trouble with the medical board or something. This kind of thing is just a very sore point with me.

Seems like a good idea, but sadly it isn't because, here in the UK at least, the receptionist will call security who will handcuff you, physically restrain you and have you arrested, and as soon as you have been taken away the receptionist will mutter to the other patients that you are "mentally ill" and "getting taken to the mental hospital". I get abused by doctors a lot since becoming severely disabled - I have long learned to keep very quiet about the abuse if I don't want to get locked up for the rest of my life either in prison or a mental institution.

When I was in my early 20's, I went to a highly recommended doctor. I had a very sore throat and laryngitis, which seemed to be getting worse. He was a middle-aged man, who struck me as having a quiet, almost bland personality. I described my symptoms and got the typical, "mm-hmm." I was sitting fully dressed on the exam table, as he had directed me to sit there. Next, he told me to please undress completely to my waist. He hadn't even looked at my throat yet! I felt a little uncomfortable, but did as I was told. He proceeded to give me the longest-lasting , most thorough breast exam I had ever had. I think he listened to my heart after he finished that. He did take a quick look at my throat too, finally, and remarked that it "looked pretty angry." He gave me a prescription for it. He said I should call him again if I didn't get relief in a few days. (I was thinking, "Not a chance, Dr. HANDS!!"). I wanted to say something to him about how his "exam" made me feel; but, I was too embarrassed. I wonder how many other patients got a similar experience Today, I would definitely speak up ! After a minute-and-a-half, or thereabouts, I would ask if he found anything concerning and told him That I felt like bread dough! He should have been uncomfortable, and I should have been MAD.

I definitely do the clothes thing. I always wear a racer back tank when I go see my PMR docs for trigger point injections. It did kind of bother me when one of them lifted up my shirt once but I guess he freaked out when I told him a hot water bottle popped on me; he was worried I burned myself. But it was weird instead of asking to check to see if I had any burns he just lifted my shirt up. Also saw a chiropractor who lifts my shirt without asking and there is no reason to do it because I wore a racer back and the spot on my back was exposed. It also made me feel really uncomfortable when he was adjusting my neck and his hand was really far down on my chest. My old PCP would do the occasional hug but it never bothered me. I was really sick and I think he didn’t think I was going to live. On good days when I was doing well he would be really happy and give me a hug. On particularly bad days he would also give me a hug. I gave one of my surgeons a hug at the end of my surgery because I had been suffering so long and gaslit so long that I was so happy that she helped and it was over; I did ask if I could give her a hug. I have had both male and female nurses hug me.

At my first followup after having a 12 brain surgery to remove a tumor, I asked my surgeon if I could give him a hug--to express my gratefulness for his work and the outcome. Has anyone else been given a “breast exam”, when they’re not there for that reason?? 2 different doctors used the same kind of m.o- “since you’re in your forties now (I was just turning 40) and since you’re here, I’ll do a breast exam” even if I tell them I know how to do the breast exams myself, I do them regularly and have my first mammogram scheduled. and I’ve never felt anything that gave me pause- I told both doctors this, like my opinion didn’t matter!! I’ve had 2 doctors do this to me. Each time I had to get completely undressed, those paper smocks make you feel revealed and uncomfortable! I was at one of my first of many appointments for my liver disease.

Of all doctors!!!!! My OBGYN Dr. did something on me that was so inappropriate. I'm embarrassed to say what it was. I was beyond shocked and I moved that body part away from him. He got the hint BUT when he left the office I was in he slammed the door!!!! He's so very lucky that I did not report him and the only reason I did not is because even though he did what he did I don't want to ruin anyone's life. The time, money, what you have to give up in your life to become a DR I took into consideration and the path I took was just not to go back to him. Dr's are human and I'm sure they become attracted to patients BUT wait until there is a time when you can discharge them or transfer them to a colleague and wait a period of time before you call them or approach them with your feelings.

This was in the early 1970"s, I was 20 and very innocent, inexperienced and naive. I got a spider bite just to the right of my pubic bone. I was having a significant localized allergic reaction. My own family physician was on vacation, and I saw his replacement, a rather young fellow. I had to pulI my pants down and pull my underwear to the side. I was laying on the exam table, with my legs hanging over the end. I had my eyes closed (because I was embarrassed) when I felt pressure on my hip. The physician was slowly grinding his groin area against me. I was paralyzed with shock and confusion. I did nothing. I was afraid. It wasn't until later that I realized I'd actually been assaulted. I never filed a complaint against him, I felt like too much time had passed and I couldn't remember his name, and who would believe me?

Here in Mexico, I wear a comfy, oversized "exam tank top" under my blouse, or wear a long skirt for ob-gyn exams, stretch waisted pants if I know I'm getting a shot in bum. Mexican medicine is usually very affirming of personal dignity in the exam room, and has been for years. Not having paper gowns keeps costs down for them and keeps dignity for the patient, as much as possible.

An important topic. I worked with a doctor that was head of a residency program that was sexually assaulting female residents. He did it one time in front of me. He was later reported to BOMEX and fired. He is a predator and not even an adequate physician but a Yale grad. He now holds an appointed position making decisions for the healthcare policy for the state. My best friend with PTSD had her life ruined after an assault by a physician. Betrayal of trust happened on a bigger scale the last few years. That former rheumatologist and administrator that hadn't seen a patient in years we all know that guy is a Saint. MD stands for minor deity.

I don't get hit on, but I get a lot of abuse from doctors - especially since I became severely disabled. Horrific abuse, and I get an operation that would cure me denied, all other medical help denied, told to just go into a nursing home, told to just take tranquilizers etc. I'm a young woman by the way, nowhere near nursing home age. Before I became disabled I also got abuse but it was nowhere near as bad - and I could walk out of the room then. Now I get not just verbally abused but also physically and I cannot get away from the situation, being on a stretcher and totally helpless.

There is perhaps a reverse flirting. A friend suffered pneumonia and was unable to shower before an ER visit and he was hospitalized for a week. Needless to say, he was a bit ripe and was a larger fellow. The doctor essentially stood across room, discussed weight in a highly offensive manner and appeared disgusted by the hospitalized patient. This doc should have ordered showering or whatever and not made offensive comments. I witnessed this and could feel how this made patient feel. Proper health related comments fine but at this person’s low the doctor made him feel like a homeless person just off months of living under a tree. A reverse flirt I call this. That’s why my mother always told us to bathe before going to hospital!

Before our nursing class started psych rotations at a state hospital, we received a "lecture" on not getting involved with patients (in this case patients who have committed a crime of some sort a maximum security state hospital). We all laughed and she said seriously nursing students have been involved and ended up being together or marrying after the patient was released.

Please do another video of patients flirting with medical staff. I've had a few nurses that I clicked with and they were someone I'd love to date, but I never got weird or even asked them on a date out of respect and to keep things professional. I don't have much interaction with people in my everyday life, so it's nice to meet someone kind and caring. Is there an appropriate way to politely ask if they would like to see me out side of the office?

So I found this odd. I went to the ENT a few weeks ago. Last time I had gone was when I was in my early 20s and it was regarding surgery and I had my mom come in. This time I was also having my mom come just because we all had a good relationship being in the room together before so why not? Well the nurse bringing me back said my m9m wasn't allowed to come and there is not enough room... the room was quite large and had 2 chairs plus the patient chair and the rolling chair for the doctor. I never felt uncomfortable with the doctor and he even asked about my mom and I said she was in the waiting room and he said aww she should have come in with you to say hello. I didn't tell him the nurse denied me. But I know as a patient I have the right to have someone come into an appt with me if I want. It has just kinda bothered me.

What can I do DR about a Physician Assistant asking me to have intercouse with him and telling me not to tell anyone. This happened at the Veterans Affairs. I filed a complaint with the patient advocate and filed a police report with the VA police. However they won't convey what disciplinary action they took and I've been searching for a lawyer but most won't take it because they don't know how to navigate a case that's federal. I need a little help finding a lawyer that deals with the government. I've made probably over 30 calls to different lawyers

There is no excuse for a physician (man or woman) who by the nature of what they do is in a position of trust/power, to try to take advantage of a patient. That said, I think one of the major issues that leads to improper relationships be it patient/physician or among married healthcare professionals is the complete lack of work/life balance. As a physician, I have seen marriages implode from adulterous behavior because of the long hours spent working. I believe this leads to physicians being flirtatious with patients because they do not spend time with those that these attentions should be directed to. This doesn’t excuse this behavior at all but rather explains why at times it may occur and the importance of having the right priorities in life. As a side note, any healthcare professional who engages in this behavior should be severely reprimanded up to and including loss of licensure. Physicians are held to a higher standard because of what we are entrusted to do, much like those in other professions such as law enforcement where if they have lied on reports, they become reportable to their state by their hiring agency and may lose their certification because of the importance of their word in court.

Don’t require my cardiologist, rheumatologist, dermatologist, pulmonologist,…to have my same issues. Men can be obgyns. I think this issue is certainly more complex than what can be broken down in a KZbin video, but I prefer to go with a universal human standard of care which for me has always followed 4 rules regardless of if you're a patient, doctor, laws or any real or perceived power imbalance. It is not profession or even professional relationship specific. This applies to anyone at any time. 1. If someone's behavior is making you uncomfortable, even as a joke, you have a right to ask them to refrain from that behavior around you. 2. If they dont stop or in cases where the behavior is egregious you don't have to explain yourself, debate, or argue you can just leave. Stand up. Grab your belongings and leave. 3. You can not always regulate your emotions, and emotions can be super crazy intense. You CAN regulate your behavior. If you believe your emotions are so overwhelmingly strong they will interfere with your ability to control your behavior, it is best to end the relationship. Just be honest and say "I dont think I'm capable of using my best judgment around you and I dont want either of us to feel compromised or uncomfortable. I think it's better if we don't see each other anymore." 4. Being a human is messy and imperfect. When possible be proactive and try to discuss things before hand. If you do make a mistake just know that the best thing you can do is not to keep making it thinking, well Ive already messed up, but rather to say, this is/was a mistake and I want to ensure it doesnt happen again.

I love when the conversation and knowledge is just flying, a bit of repartee develops between myself and providers. I find it motivating to do my best in following thru. My medical oncologist is that way. Dermatologists, aya they dont want to talk i hate when they prescribe and don't say what it is for. Pre google you didnt particularly know what it was. The rx didnt specify, the PI was not approachable. I think I am pretty good about figuring stuff out. Nevertheless, there i was with directions to use as needed on several rx. I had a couple steroids, an antibiotic, an a cleanser. She did ease my anxiety about not being perfectly shaved everywhere. No small thing.

I think this can be a good thing as it is usually obvious it is being done for the patient and not because the dr is actually a perverted letch. If the dr Is being serious in his flirting.. run. run the other way and find a same sex dr with decent reviews. Always read the reviews. Always.

In a situation of Power differential in favor of the doctor, there isn't really much to do other than not acting on it. As the Doctor, They are in control of the situation from the start. As a patient, they may have fawning responses to danger and the flirting might be a result of their nerves. If the patient is persistent and it makes the doctor uncomfortable, they can always refer them to a different doctor, or a even psychiatrist or psychologist if it appears to be a symptom of a psychiatric or personality disorder. Munchausen's Syndrome comes to mind here.

I had to see an ENT and he was probably in his late 70s. He put the tube down my nose to check my vocal cords but instead of sitting up like you're supposed to he laid the table down and during the exam he kept telling me you're a very attractive woman started petting my head. What was I supposed to do I couldn't get up had a tube down my nose. When he took the tube out he told me look at me and he had his face almost pressed against mine and I knew what he was going to do I was afraid he would kiss me he said look at me and I elbowed him really hard and I got up and got my coat he tried to put my coat on and I kept pulling away from him. When I was ready to leave he said do you have a boyfriend what do you like to do would you like to go out to dinner with me. If he wasn't so old and I'm not exactly a young woman but I would have threw him up against the wall LOL it was so disgusting I was traumatized. Because not only that he hit on me but he was old. I reported him to the hospital and I even reported him to his office that he worked in and asked the girls about him. They didn't say a word nobody did anything about it.
