One word of warning tourists. This video contains scenes of people in short sleeves, drinking under the stars in the evening. Please note that temperatures you, as a tourist may regard as winter are considered high summer in Northern Ireland and it is not uncommon for us locals to have barbecues on cloudy days with temperatures barely reaching 15 celcius. I am not kidding. That's why the Romans called this little island Hibernia, as in hibernate. So bring a coat and you'll be fine.

For all the patriotic yahoos BTL: the NYT is trying to make it easy for American tourists to 'do' Ireland and, yes, Belfast is in Ireland (the island, that is). So, if they had 'Belfast, UK' many viewers would immediately start thinking.....London....Manchester....Edinburgh.

Presumably geography isn't the New York Times' strongest subject. Whether you personally feel that Belfast is a part of Ireland, or Eire, or the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, or just Northern Ireland... it's poor to see a main newspaper call it Belfast, Ireland. By any defination (UN, WTO, EU etc.) .. Belfast isn't in Ireland. It really isn't rocket science.
@celticdemon23
@celticdemon23 8 жыл бұрын
+neil What is the name of the island on which Belfast is situated ?
@carlislecarlisle
@carlislecarlisle 8 жыл бұрын
+celticdemon23 You could say it is situated in the British Isles, you could say it's located on the Island of Ireland, some people would say Eire. It is obviously a very contentious point to a lot of people.. with a name like celticdemon and a free gaza avatar I'm pretty sure how you would define it. It is poor for a main paper to say Belfast, Ireland. It will be construed by most that Belfast is in the Republic of Ireland, which of course it isn't. Many in the US don't realise that Ireland was never a united country, apart from under British rule. Belfast (Béal Feirste) was a part of the Kingdom of Ulster. Most Americans also don't realise that most people in Belfast are British and wish to remain part of the United Kingdom. I've had many great times in Belfast with both sides of the community. I love the place. Belfast, Ireland though is poor and lazy to see from a major publication.
@celticdemon23
@celticdemon23 8 жыл бұрын
A pretty fair point although to say Ireland was never united except under British Rule is Totally erroneous, Ireland was united UNTIL British Rule. Also The assertion that the majority of people in Belfast are British is also wrong. Last census results show that, Majority is split between identifying as Irish or Northern Irish, it was quite a low percentage who identified as British. Also Belfast City Hall now has a nationalist majority. Im born and raised in Belfast, I'v an Irish Passport. Belfast Is in the north East of Ireland. Politics and semantics wont change that fact. Belfast is no more British than any of the other British Colonised towns and cities across a third of the globe were.

+celticdemon23 stop denying reality its a British city because like it or lump it is in part of the United Kingdom , i dont care is you have a dutch passport , fact is if you are born in Northern Ireland legally from a nationality stand point you are British in terms of citizenship and dont tell me am wrong i worked in the civil service and i know am right, the option is there for anyone born on the island of Ireland to have a Irish passport,but legally up until you claim an Irish passport if born in Northern Ireland as part of the UK you are British in citizenship terms

Most people that are not from there say "Ireland", they don't want to be rude but just lump it together because it is on the island of "Ireland" (which most people know is divided because of war and conflict). However I can imagine a tourist video does not want to remind people of all the conflict and it sounds friendlier with just "Ireland". Even a teacher I know who should know correctly that is traveling to the north just said Ireland. No disrespect, I love all the people regardless of heritage in the North and wish only peace and prosperity to them! Deserve it after all those horrible decades and loss of life.

Trust me, you won't regret it. Or head South, where the nice parts of Ireland reside. Belfast is the home to our Assembly, lead by a man, who is trying to pass into law the right for businesses to discriminate against Gay people on religious grounds. Belfast, where racism and homophobia are never out of fashion.
