NOTIFICATION SQUAD: What would you rather have?! Vending machine pizza or Okonomiyaki?! These are the big everyday decisions that make life worth living. I can't believe it's taken 6 years to make a video on Hiroshima! If you're visiting Japan, I always recommend it along with Tokyo and Kyoto as one of the big three. Particularly Miyajima, which is a pleasant island escape from Japan's hectic urban surroundings. A huge thanks to Ellen for joining me today and on the next few episodes of Journey Across Japan - it should be good fun living vicariously through her reactions to Japan!

Hey Chris! Thanks to this video I added Hiroshima to my trip and now, having returned, it was one of the best places I've been. I had the best ramen and gyoza there, and Miyajima was stunning. Unfortunately they started renovations on the main attraction right after this video so the gate is all covered up, but the shrine itself and the surroundings are amazing. I can also recommend the "folklore" museum to anyone who visits, it's on a quiet street to the southwest. There's some interesting history in there and a great place to just sit and rest a while. Momijidani park is also stunning, although we were so tired that we only saw a bit of it. If/when I return to Japan next, I might need to go there again.

I had my first visit to Hiroshima last year and knew the Peace Museum was a must-visit, especially as an American. There's no way to properly explain the feeling I had as I went through the museum. I was expecting strong feelings, but I didn't expect to break down as soon as the second room. I was crushed. But I wouldn't ever take it back if I could - it's an essential teachable moment and something everyone in the world should experience once.

@@@grubbybum3614 The topic here is about the A bombings, that caused great human suffering. Not just for the victims but also for many future generations due to the radiation poisoning, What have they done to deserve this? why should the future generations pay? they are just like you and me, or your future children/grandchildren.. Yet I am not surprise to read you comment, I can tell you are an American . Because I have done enough research and read enough opinions on this topic and what I find is that most Americans justify this horrifying crime implying they (Japanese people) deserved it by bringing up other issues/topics. The other issues have place and time for discussion, but why ignore this one? And I haven't justified anything. Targeting civilian populations with nuclear weapons, for example in Nagasaki, where the bomb exploded above a school, is such an inhuman act. The intentional killing of civilians using nuclear weapons in truth is a war crime. The US also violated the Geneva protocol which prohibits the use of asphyxiating, poisons or other gases, materials or devices in wars. The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is a war crime, which the United States of America should have been tried for it. But then the winner writes the history. P.S I am neither a Japanese nor an American, Just someone who questions humanity.

I loved Miyajima! I was there in July 2019. Spent the night at a wonderful ryokan. After the daytrippers head back to Hiroshima, the place is fantastic. They illuminate the Torii until 11:00 pm and you can walk almost the whole way out to it. Gorgeous!

Only in Japan could you have a box of free pizza cutters pointed out and not have them all stolen or have that drawer pissed/pooped in.

Aaaaah I remember Miyajima before smartphones came along, its deer and oyster restaurants (there was one with oysters growing in a tank!) without tourists trying to get a selfie with an uninterested deer, all those yonks ago. Simpler and better times

Chris, thank you for introducing us to Okinomiyaki. We popped into Okinomimura and were.. overwhelmed. Nothing is more confusing than watching your food being piled high in front of you, and then being handed a spatula with no further explanation.. But it was delicious. So much so we returned the following day. Cheers man and keep up the good work!

I really recommend going to the Shukkeien Garden too, e.g. after visiting the Peace Museum. It is a stunning landscape garden within a short walking distance from Hiroshima castle. The castle itself has an interesting exhibition in English in case you are into Japanese history. In the shrine in front of the castle, you can buy English omikuji, which I didn't find in a lot of other places. On Miyajima, I actually saw a sign saying "take care of your passport, the deer eat paper"... They tried to eat my bag instead. Also, I can recommend going there at high as well as low tide. Both have their own magic. You can walk through and around the torii at low tide and see the size of it from close-up.

Hey Chris, I've watched every single one of your videos. Your content is super engaging, funny and informative. To me it just feels like I'm having a chat with a friend and he's telling me all of his adventures across Japan. In three months I'm travelling to Japan and I've been rewatching some of your Japan-tips videos and I just want to say: thank you it has saved me a shit ton of time doing research on google. Sometimes I think people just ask you for advice, but they don't really take the time to praise the effort you put in your videos, but I'm not going to be one of this kind. You are doing a great job, keep it up!

I went to Miyajima with my girlfriend a few weeks ago, it was an awesome time. Along with Hiroshima, we went during a big festival and there was so much to do! You have to take multiple days to see some of this stuff and the restaurants available. Good stuff, mate.

Yeah the deer on Miyajima don't mess around. Especially during rut. I had a buck mug me for my sandwich in the plaza by the ferry last week. Antlers hurt.

I've seen this video before, Chris, but I just happened to see it again today when I did a random search to see what content was available in/about Hiroshima. I just wanted to say a hearty "Thank you" for making something positive about the area. Your video is literally the only one on the entire first search page that isn't about the bombing. Hopefully there will be more! Edit: Oh, by the way -- I still haven't had the vending machine pizza but I'm swimming in okonomiyaki, so I would definitely like to give the pizza a try -- despite there being no place to sit or utensils to enjoy it with. haha!

I highly recommend staying one night in Miyajima. After the last ferry leaves, the islands gets super empty and it is really so much better. You can also wake up early to enjoy the island before the first ferry arrives. Great video btw!
