The point about HR going up during the taper is important. People don't account for that and start thinking things are going wrong, when they are where they should be.

I ran a marathon race yesterday. I did 3 three-week taper by reducing the volume. In the last week, I wondered about the resting heart rate and heart rate variability. I thought there was a flu coming on. Fortunately, everything went well and in the race I got a new PR from 3:32 to 3:29 in windy weather. I didn't even look at my heart rate in the race. Hill running as a lesson from this video. Good luck in Dublin. Thanks for the video!

Thanks I’m on Day 8 out from my marathon! Goal is to sub 3 at the age of 41 😜 I have an excellent coach but was worried because I’ve always had a 3 or 2 week taper and this time I never decreased intensity, but I decreased volume at 7 days out. This made me feel so much better!!! I was thinking omg I’m going to be exhausted at the line!! Good luck to you!

Your advice on muscle tension is quality! I was sick with Covid in the last 3rd and 2nd week before Chicago. With not having ran for two weeks muscle was soft so on race week I took a dip in the ocean on the Monday and Thursday to create tension. Race day went amazing and legs felt perfect! If it wasn't for your masterclass I wouldn't of known any of that 👍

Great video great insight got a 50 mile race coming up soon but I forgot about it almost and cause I had a free entry kind of snuck up on me so it’s like I got a total of like five weeks of training and I don’t know if I am training long enough that I need to taper but lotta really good insight appreciate it

Great advice. I'm two weeks from Cork 2024 marathon. Training hasn't gone to plan as I had 5 weeks off with pneumonia but have recovered well and I picked up the training again three weeks ago. I thought I would drop out but have done some long runs now and feel ready to give it a go. Good advice to try and keep the muscles taught and don't "go to sleep"!

I just ran my first marathon 13 days ago! I got a bad respiratory virus right at the start of my taper so didn’t do much. Ended up doing 4 short runs with a little bit of marathon pace. I did finish my marathon and was happy about that but definitely think I didn’t get enough speed work during the taper and felt like it slowed me down on race day BUT when you’re sick there’s not much else you can do!

Nico Roche commented about the TdF once, he always kept pushing on the rest days. A body in motion must stay in motion, once you stop you would need to push hard to get going again.

This was really helpful. Thank you! Another thing Ive learned (the hard way): don't do a bunch of running on grass the week before the race (unless that is already part of your regular training). I thought it would be nice to run on a soft surface, but it was more challenging in a new way and it didn't help give that 'snappy' feeling come race day either. Rooting for you Stephen!

Good luck on Sunday, Stephen. I have my 8th marathon in 3 weeks in Maspalomas. Do you have any tips or video for controlling race day nerves/excitement. I always feel confident going into the race but as soon as it starts my heart rate shoots up and the 1st few miles feel like a struggle. My race day heart rate is always way higher than in training.

I started doing what Renato Canova does to his athletes. He never let’s them drop below 90% of goal race pace during taper week because it keeps the muscle tension, tendon strength and other factors sharp. It is easier to go from 90% to 100% of goal race pace than 65% to 100% of goal race pace. A sample session during taper week would be 30-45 minutesp @ 90% of goal race pace. I believe the last long run session for the marathon is 35k @ 95-97% of goal race pace 3-4 weeks out. He only allows his athletes to do long runs once every two weeks but they aren’t long easy runs but long fast runs of a minimum of 90% of goal MP.

@enduraman1

The mistake people make he says is they lower the intensity during a taper when they should only lower the volume. Thus, a correct taper you run less frequency and fewer miles. However, you want to continue high intensity intervals.

Ahhhh, was wondering why my resting heart rate raises a bit on tapers. Thought I was losing fitness. I credit you for my awesome first marathon...most of the people say slow long runs, and sure i did most slowish, towards the end i added in some harder effort long runs. Like you i felt like I needed to know what a marathon effort felt like and it paid dividends. Now to get sub 3 hour by April/May.
