What To Do With A Horse That Crowds At Feed Time

If your horse has a habit of crowding you constantly when feeding, it could end up leading to some bad behaviors. For example, if left unchecked, it can lead to aggressiveness towards humans and/or other horses. The goal of this simple exercise is to get to where all you have to do is walk towards the feed bucket and your horse walks away giving you room to pour food and walk away. To start off, you may need to use a flag, but make sure it’s a last resort tool. You don’t want to have to always rely on a flag for them to move away.

Thank you! I will be doing this with my horses. I have one that we had to bottle feed 20 plus years ago and he is not scared of anything or anyone. He is pushy and very disrespectful. Always crowds the other horses out and is pushy with humans as well.

Thank you so much. What a great demonstration. This technique has helped greatly at feeding time. Our horses know to stay on the other side of their stall when we drop feed. A wait until we say it’s okay to proceed to their food. 🐴

Thank You Mr. James. I had to let go of a good horse who was starting a fight every feeding time. Wish I had known this. If you pls, do one with the horse that does not want to pick up back feet and kicks out. Much respect.

I have a separate feeding bucket for the 2 horses I have. The 4 year old comes running and the 21 year old my husband and I feed them at the same time about 40 feet apart but when I get close to the younger horse he pins his ears and when I tell him to back up ,he does not do it until I get a little more serious with my voice and arm movement, but then he runs to the old horse and pushes the old horse away from her food 😅what should I do?
