I almost didn't watch this because I can't bear to watch beautiful old dishes destroyed for modern decor, and that includes putting them outside as decorations and bird feeders. Thank you for respecting the past and the lives of these beautiful dishes.

The vintage flour sacks came from a yard sale about 10 years ago across town. A sweet white haired lady had these perfect flour sacks washed and folded in a milk crate. SO MANY FLOUR SACKS. When I asked her how much she wanted for them, she said, "oh $3, it's just old flour sacks." I told her they were beautiful and worth more than $3, but she said she was just getting rid of things. Because I felt like a robber for the crate of fabric, I paid her $15 for a plastic table that wasn't worth $15. I wish I had asked her the history of the flour sacks! I use them sparingly but enjoy any project they are part of. 😃 ❤️

I used to sell vintage dishes such as the ones in this video when i had a booth. I still have boxes of them stored away. Nobody wants them anymore because you can't use them in the microwave and dishwasher. Plus some have lead in the clay they used and really aren't safe for everyday use, I am told. They often sit unsold on the shelves at thrift stores, and employees say old dishes and glassware get thrown out if they don't sell quickly now. It's kind of sad that the ones leftover from my booth will probably go in the landfill when I am gone. So I actually did think of using them for bird feeders and garden accents. At least someone could be enjoying the bright pretty floral patterns right now😊. ❤

I love all of the ideas! I have an obsession with plates and platters myself. They are so easy to decorate with! Another idea for you (and I have a video showing this, its called tea party garden) is to line a flower bed with them. I just dug a little trench around the edge of a flower bed that circles an old oak tree, and just stand the plates up all around the tree. I just looked for colors that would stand out from a distance. After making my video I had several people having fits because apparently some of the plates I used were very expensive so I decided to replace those with less expensive ones 😂I also collect state plates and have them hanging all over my guest bedroom wall. I only need about 9 states to have them all. My mom collects the dog figurines too. They are so adorable!

You could use pieces of foam board or any stiff cardboard and either paint or cover with fabric behind each shelf. It could all be the same or different for each shelf. You could change it out for each season too!

Jill, my china cabinet has fabric as a background, and I do switch it out seasonally. In my older Duncan Phyfe china cabinet, my shelves do come out, so I used an upholstery stapler to attach the fabric. I also used that method in my larger china cabinet for the Buffalo plaid Christmas fabric (it's a tablecloth from Walmart). But then I realized the entire back of my larger china cabinet is made of a thin Luan board that comes off easily. So I took that back panel off, covered it with fabric, and put it back on. This was a lot easier than putting it on from the front. Depending on how your cabinet is made, you could do this OR as Deann has suggested, insert painted/wallpapered/upholstered panels from the front side 😊

Colleen, here's my secret: I love old things, I love visual abundance, and I love to switch decor seasonally. So by the time it's dusty, it's time to rotate the vignettes to a new look 😃 I appreciate a minimal decor style in other people's homes, but I love my "Cracker Barrel wanna be" style ♥️ 😆
