I had 5 tears in my right eye which caused more then half of my retina to detach. After the surgery there was no pain. They used Nitrous Oxide gas to hold the retina in place while it healed. I’m currently on my 2nd month and the gas bubble is nearly gone and my eye is doing Much better than they thought.

How does the silicone oil affect visual acuity before it is removed? Will vision be sharp/clear, blurry, near sighted, far sighted, dimmer, will objects be smaller? Will any of this change after the silicone is removed?

Hello dr thank you for nice explain I was under surgeries for retinal tear and detachment as we called rahkmatogenes the doctor did vitrectomy with lazer and silicon injection now 15 days post op. I have blurred vision i cant read by affected eye and the picture appeare smaller sice first day after op. Until now is that normal because silicon or should there is improvment in vission even with silicon Please doctor answer me thank you ❤

When oil is in the eye you should be able to see normally with a +5 D glass. If that's not happening something may be wrong with the retina

You've covered everything I had , including the macular hole and gas bubble. . He hasn't disused much as me including after surgery permanent vision change. I had retina and gas with buckle 2yrs ago; and no problems. About 6 months ago I was digging up roots in the yard and the next day my eye was bleeding; so much there was a big blood spot on my pillow. I went to ER at eye center and they said it was bleeding via an old incision and they didn’t know why. I was told not to over work and take it easy. The bleeding stopped on it own. What do you think about it? Two days later my eye was clear and no more problems.

Hi Dr. I have a RD on my left eye and the Dr. I saw started treating it with laser first. She says prognosis is reserved if I were to undergo surgery. I've now gone to two different Dr.'s that have suggested I get surgery. I'm worried that it may be too late to get surgery. They said the laser kept it from progressing though. This was do to diabetic retinopathy which I also have on my right eye. Should I still proceed with surgery and can laser and eye injections like avastin help my right from developing any future retinal detachment?

Now the thing is some kind pf tissue are generated around . doctor says, now we have to inject 5000 cs silicon oil for 1.5 years , so is my vision gonna stable after that? , also another eye will be affect ? 1. You probably have a bad detachment. That’s why you need the high density oil.

I did cataract surgery on the 7th of July. My vision started to become dark after a week and it was found that my retina is detached.I did another surgery on the 7th of last month which retinal detachement surgery .The report says I had a funnel detachment and they used silicone oil. My vision is blurry but this video gave me hope that I might regain my sight Although it won’t be 20/20

If you have blurred vision it might be due to the oil. Your doctor will know the condition of the retina.

I know this thread is older but I just had cataract surgery June 11th on left and June 18th for right. Paid 5k for multifocal lenses. Now this past Thursday, July 18th..we were driving to camp and all of a sudden the vision in my right eye was blurry and I seen a million tiny black dots along with flashing and a huge dark black floater. I called my eye dr immediately and she told me to come in the next morning. I went in and was told I had a bad retinal tear and they sent me right over to the retinal dr. He looked at my eye and said..u are in a very dangerous situation. It was so fast. I didn't know what was happening. Next thing I know I was holding onto these grips..a large thing placed in my eye to keep me from blinking and a PA or someone pushing on my head to hold me completely still. Then he started with this laser surgery. It was the most painful thing I've ever been thru. When he was done..I saw nothing..complete blackness. I sat there and bawled my eyes out, shaking and in shock while my 19 yr old tried to calm me down. Didn't get many instructions. No papers for aftercare.. nothing. Just said to do absolutely nothing for 6 weeks. No bending, no lifting, no housework..not even sweep a floor. Just stay completely still with only short walks to the bathroom. And sent me out the door. It was a whirlwind...like a bad dream. Now it's been 3 days and idk of im doing anything right. Literally staring at a wall all day cux I'm terrified to move. I feel like not only is this scary and my vision compromised, but I also just wasted 5k for nothing. Never had any problems like this until I had the cataract surgery. And they surely didn't tell me this was a side effect or a possibility. That's wrong. We should be given all the facts before a decision like that. I'm so upset and so angry 😭

@tracym3 Sorry to hear about your experience. We in India treat retinal tears very differently. If your vision is compromised it cannot be just a tear, you may have had a bleed as well, or even a retinal detachment. I prefer to operate someone immediately if he’s had a large retinal tear with a bleed because whatever you do more tears can develop in a case of acute PVD. Yes, vitreous changes can happen after cataract surgery.

VItrectomy is advised only if the floaters are so much that they block vision. In high myopes vitrectomy has a much higher risk than in normal eyes. You could see another retina specialist for a second opinion to rule out retinal holes and tears.

I very rarely prescribe a face down position as its very difficult for the patient. The position of your head depends upon so many factors like position of retinal break, macular hole etc.

If the retina is well attached there is no need for the doctor to replace it with anything. The irrigating fluid used in the surgery fills the vitreous cavity.

When gas is injected in the eye the eye pressure may go up, causing pain. Please show your retina specialist. Vision will be dark till the gas bubble disappears

You should ideally not see flashes and floaters after retina surgery if the vitreous is removed completely. You need a retina examination to rule out any peripheral vitreous traction

Vision is still not cleared after 5 days, + doctor told me to drink 5-6 litre water per day for next few days, is it normal? Hello madame, Im 39 years old, I had big myopia (-10 D). I had retinal detachement a year ago, with a vitrectomy a week after that, treated with normal gas but soon I had a bleeding inside the eye and doctors had to put oil ( without another detachement). After a month the oil was removed (there were a lot of oil floaters ). After putting the oil at the same moment I saw that I dont see anything in the central vision, it was improving day after day but not completely. my sight didnt recover till now. I have metamorphopsies like in AMD, also few tiny central points of no vision. Neither on microscope examination nor in OCT test there are no abnormalities but still I dont see normally. I think that the vision deformacies a little improved this year but still its not good enought to read. Please tell me if there is a chance I would regain my vision and if there is something I can do about it.
