@minutiamiscellanea18625 жыл бұрын
West Virginia is not closer to the South. It IS the South. It is below the Mason-Dixon line. It was an ante-bellum slave area (though it did not have many slaves). It was part of Virginia until it seceded from Virginia during the Civil War and became an independent state. It was a Border State for the entirety of its ante-bellum and Civil War existence, and delegates from western Virginia counties were seated in the Confederate Congress. It's culture is Appalachian, and it is most culturally like other members of the Upper South such as Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee. West Virginia is definitely the South. It is not the Deep South, and it never had a plantation culture, but is is most assuredly the South.
@theragingplatypus47435 жыл бұрын
West Virginia is quasi south. Although most of it lies below the Mason-Dixon line, that is more than trumped by the fact that it went with the union in the war. West Virginia really belongs to no region other than Appalachia. The northern part around Morgantown is closer tied to Pennsylvania than the south. The Ohio valley is tied to well, Ohio. The Eastern panhandle is a DC suburb and the very southern edge is tied to Virginia and Kentucky.
@minutiamiscellanea18625 жыл бұрын

@@theragingplatypus4743 With all due respect, I have a Ph.D. in Southern history from the University of South Carolina. My dissertation was on the history of sports in the South. The Upper South and the Deep South are definitely accurate terms. Do your research. Don't be ignorant. On that issue, you are flatly uneducated, wrong and misinformed. If we are talking about 21st century football only, then West Virginia is either an Upper Midwest state or a Southwestern state according to their two dominant schools: Marshall (MAC) & West Virginia (Big XII). Neither of these conferences truly reflects the State of West Virginia's geographical, historical or cultural heritage, which is where this conversation started before you tried to limit it to 21st century football post facto. Look at the original comment on this thread by Levi Knopp : 8 months ago "Bro Kansas and Iowa are not in the South(2:00).West Virginia is closer to the south than Iowa!" Also, I have lived in the state of Virginia, both in Richmond and in Alexandria, and I have experienced this debate first hand with a multitude of people from the region. Without exception they consider West Virginians to be part of the South. So do the vast majority of West Virginians. Again, do some research.

But upon further consideration it became a worse and worse deal for Boise State, especially after SDSU pulled out. Way outside the geographic footprint of the conference and no historical rivalries are just 2 of the negatives. There was a lawsuit, Boise State paid the AAC a buck to settle it. I don't see Boise State lagging behind Pac-12 schools like Oregon State or WAZZU in any significant way including research programs if that really means anything to admission of football programs, which it doesn't. It is part of the sales pitch, that is about all. BSU may have lagged those schools 40 years ago but not anymore. Pac-12 expansion is Boise's best shot to move up and not unrealistic long term. Here are some things on which I will bet my bottom dollar. 1.) The Big 10, SEC and (probably) the ACC will not be looking to add schools in their existing footprint OR two new schools in the same state. I see it over and over again on these message boards with people saying "OU and OSU to the SEC" or "Texas to the SEC" or "Kansas and K-State to the Big 10". Aside from other factors like academics, these conferences have networks. Meaning they make their money on subscriber fees. Thus, Texas fans with a sports package are already paying in-state subscriber fees for the SECN because A&M is already a member of the SEC. It's why the Big 10 added Rutgers and Maryland instead of Iowa State and Pitt. 2.) The private schools in the Big 12, TCU and Baylor, aren't going to another P5 league if the Big 12 dissolves. They aren't going to the SEC for the reason I outlined in my first point. They will end up in some Big 12/AAC hybrid. 3.) The PAC12, SEC, Big 10 and ACC will only expand if THEY WANT TO EXPAND. Just because one conference adds a school or two doesn't mean that the other are obligated to expand. Which leads me to this point.... 4.) Conferences will only choose to expand if the incremental revenue generated by the new members exceeds the share of revenue those schools would be paid by the conference. Translation: If a conference expands, its only because the members of that conference stand to make more money than they currently are. Adding new members is not something that conference administrators take lightly. 5.) We are not going to end up with four conferences of 16 teams. The P5 currently has one conference with 10, 12 and three with 14. The idea that they will all end up at 16 seems unlikely considering each one has its own geography, academic and athletic profiles.

^^^^^ BEST. ANALYSYS. OF. THIS. SITUATION.
@johnwatsoniv3845 жыл бұрын
Thank you, you're largely right although you missed the recruiting aspect of expansion. For the Big Ten at least, recruiting is a major factor. Recruiting had arguably as much to do with the decision to add Maryland and Rutgers as did media markets and the mid tier programs of the conference have already begun to see improvements in their recruiting classes due to the addition of those two schools and the increasing nationalization of recruiting from Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State (which opens up more recruits from Ohio and Pennsylvania traditionally taken by those programs to other Big Ten programs like Wisconsin, Iowa, and msu). The TV money also helps recruiting because most members are becoming able to massively upgrade their facilities and hire better coaches and assistants than they could before. Better results on the field leads to more money. All that is why Delaney is the King of realignment.

Well thought out, and agreed. If there is expansion, I would guess they do it in pairs or replace teams, i.e. Get Notre Dame remove rutgers. I could see the big 10 adding Notre Dame: A) if Notre Dame wanted to Join a conference or B)if the playoff committee deemed conference affiliated teams are eligible. You know like the big 12 added the title game after they got left out of the playoffs because they did not have a title game. Also the criticism Alabama got for not playing in a conference title game or being a conference champ all of which applies to notre dame every year. This will crop up when a 11-1 Notre Dame vs say a 12-1 Ohio state gets the last pick but OSU loses in the big 10 title game. Notre Dame's free pass might not cut the mustard in this situation and the power 5 teams might want to add insurance that their teams get preference over teams that stayed home. The power 5 conference teams vote that only conference teams are eligible. Who do the group of 5 want to get the bowl money? one of their members ? or Notre Dame who doesnt split their money with the conference? back to Notre Dame joining, I wonder if the Big 10 then removes a team to keep it even. I don't see a team that would fit in with them. Plus adding teams means splitting up money more ways. Rutgers gone? I do not see the pac 12 Expanding either unless they add OU and/or Texas, then I could see them expanding. Then I bet it is Texas and OSU or a team like Fresno State going to the pac 12. I guess OU splits from Texas for the same reason A&M left. Boise outside of Football brings nothing. Same with the SEC on OU. The SEC would take OU in a nano second and I believe they would add west Va as the other team to even the conference. I don't see Texas coming to the SEC anymore because A&M is already there as you mentioned. Also Mizzou got the invite last time because OU did not want to leave the big 12, but they were interested. ACC passed on WV as did the big 10 when they grabbed Maryland. Now I do think there might be some power 5 raiding like what happened with the Big 10 and Maryland in the future. UNC is one I could see being sought after by the big 10 and SEC. The big 10 would be crazy big time adding ND and UNC. The SEC would kill to add OU and UNC. people still think of conferences as a regional thing but the future will be based on TV viewing and markets. I could see a UNC or NC State going to the SEC to increase TV money only for the ACC to pluck Auburn to grab the Alabama market. both conferences gain new markets and can demand more TV money and entice teams to leave. Those teams would still schedule their rivalry games i.e UF/FSU UGA/Ga Tech USC/Clemson The Big 12 will probably become the new AAC out west. I think that is the time for the group of 5 to create their own 4 team playoffs and national title.

Right now the Big Ten adds schools because they are great schools with tradition (Nebraska, Penn St) or because it will add TV revenue via the Big Ten Network. That's why they added Rutgers (NYC #1 market) and Maryland (Washington DC #6 market, and Baltimore #26 market). Right now the B1G is in 16 or 17 of the top 50 markets in the country. I'm not sure if the University of Illinois gives them St. Louis. Let's say it doesn't. So let's say they are in 16 of the top 50. The 16 they are in are: #1 NYC, #3 Chicago, #4 Philly, #6 DC, #14 Detroit, #15 Minneapolis- St. Paul, #19 Cleveland, #24 Pittsburgh, #26 Baltimore, #28 Indy, #33 Kansas City, #34 Columbus, #35 Cincy, #36 Milwaukee, #43 Grand Rapids, and #45 Harrisburg, PA. So obviously they are going to try and add teams that would give them the biggest markets they are not yet in, or schools with great traditions. Notre Dame is the school they want the most for obvious reasons. It wouldn't give them a new TV market but the Irish are the team they want the most. Now lets get into TV markets... #2 is LA and there's no possibility there for the B1G. #5 is Dallas, and #7 is Houston, #31 is San Antonio, and #39 is Austin. University of Texas would give the conference all those markets, which is why Texas is the school the B1G wants 2nd most behind ND. The University of Houston and TCU would give the B1G Dallas and Houston. #8 is the Bay Area, but there is no realistic option there for the B1G. #9 is Atlanta, and I believe Georgia Tech would be an option for the B1G. #10 is Boston and I believe Boston College is also an option for the B1G. So I actually think BC and GT will be the next 2 teams in the B1G. If I'm wrong we can keep going down the list to the next possibilities which would be Denver at #17. Obviously that's Colorado, and St. Louis at #21 which would mean Mizzou. Going further we have Charlotte at #23 and the Raleigh Durham area at #25. UNC would give them both those markets plus Greensboro- Winston Salem at #48. Then at #41 is Oklahoma City, which would obviously mean OU and Oklahoma State. If the Big Ten really wanted to be proactive they could expand to 20 teams by adding TCU, Houston, OU, Oklahoma State, Boston College, and Georgia Tech. That would bring in a great mix of very good teams and huge media markets. The B1G would obviously split into 2 10 team divisions with no crossovers during the regular season, just the conference championship game. East would be: Georgia Tech, Rutgers, Boston College, Maryland, Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Indiana, Purdue. West: Illinois, Northwestern, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, Houston.

Big 10 expansion has always been about market recently by adding either national brands (nebraska) or schools in large markets (rutgers-New York, Maryland- DC). Since they cut the biggest checks they would go after Texas and Oklahoma. Might fail but that's their pattern of behavior and big 10 schools get the biggest conference checks. If that failed maybe Houston(because of market) and another school to make the number even.
@lazerdunnigan89226 жыл бұрын
WVU won't join the BIG 10, but its not because of academics like everyone says. Academics is just a cop out that these conferences use to justify their decision. The reason WVU won't get an invite to the BIG 10 is all about the market they are in. Even though WVU has a great fan base, the TV market is poor. The state only has 1.9 million people, and while Pittsburgh is close, there is competition with Pitt and honestly, a lot of Penn St alumni are in Pittsburgh. Remember, its all about money. WVU probably should be in the ACC, but in my humble (and not important) opinion, I think they would fit best in the SEC East.

WV really could fit several conferences. They are close to the ACC and have rivalries with Pitt and VT. They're also close to and have rivalries Penn State and Maryland...Big 10. They'd work in the SEC but realky have no history and are more tied to the Mid Atlantic region. The Big 12 realky doesn't make sense. Their closest game is in Iowa at 800 miles away. And WV has a top ten medical and top ten law school.
@johnwatsoniv3845 жыл бұрын
@@theragingplatypus4743 no AAU, no invite to the Big Ten unless you're Notre Dame. If any Big 12 program (besides Texas and Oklahoma of course) deserves to find its way to a new P5 home when the Big 12 dies though, it's WVU. They'd fit the SEC and ACC just fine if either is interested.

I'm sure Rutgers and Maryland are fine schools academically , but they have absolutely, positively no business being in the Big Ten. The Big Ten is a MIDWEST CONFERENCE, always has been always will be. When they added Penn State in 1990, that was a stretch, but its worked out okay. When they added Nebraska a few years back, Missouri wanted in badly, in fact, if they would have made an offer to all of those Big 12 North schools, I think the Big Ten could have had their 16 teams and been done with realignment. Just think what it could have looked like: Big Ten West: Kansas, Kansas State, Nebraska, Missouri, Iowa, Iowa State, Wisconsin, Minnesota. Big Ten East: Indiana, Purdue, Illinois, Northwestern, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State. ALL GEOGRAPHICAL, would have made a lot more sense. All of those Big 12 schools would have jumped at the chance to be in the Big Ten. Honestly Rutgers needs to go back to the Big East, and as a charter member of the ACC, Maryland needs to go back there, it would probably be better for them now that the ACC has their own network where they didn't have when they left.

- B1G: One thing I would change is putting WVU in the ACC (geography, academics), and instead put Syracuse in the B1G along with ND, instead. - ACC: UCONN or Cincy could replace Syracuse in the ACC. - PAC-12: BSU and SDSU would be the most likely outside of UT/TT/OU/OSU. Football only for BSU would make sense due to academics, as BSU is only #231-300 in the country. - Big XII: I like your choices. - SEC: Nothing to change. Virginia Tech and NCState often rumored to be interested, but NCState has the same board as the other NC schools so I don't see it happening. - AAC: Refill from best available CUSA. - MWC: Keep it as you have it. - CUSA: Refill from best available Sunbelt. - MAC: Keep it as you have it. - Sunbelt: Refill from best available southern FCS schools.

Here's what I think will happen. After the Big XII is starting to lose relevancy, Texas and other mid-south teams like Baylor, Texas Tech, and TCU, convince the College Football Committee to create their own conference only for southwestern collegiate teams, thus the Southwestern Conference is reborn. They snatch Texas A&M and Arkansas from the SEC to make it 6 members, and then they kept on growing and expanding with the additions of Houston, Memphis, Rice, and SMU to the conference. The more northern teams of the Big XII, Like Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, And Oklahoma State merged with the Big Ten to create the Big Ten East and West conferences. While the Big Ten East goes back to it's original 10 teams from the conference's founding in 1896 to 2010, the Big Ten West on the other hand needed more teams to match up with their eastern counterparts, so the Big Ten headquarters called back the former teams from the Big 8, which is Colorado, Missouri, and Nebraska, to join the Big Ten West. Now The Big Ten West has 8 teams, but they needed 2 more teams to match up with the Big Ten East, so they get BYU from the independents and North Dakota State from the Missouri Valley Conference. The ACC added both Notre Dame and South Carolina to the mix, but Miami, Virginia Tech, and Louisville leave for the SEC. Big East Football Returns, and it's teams are, Boston College, Cincinnati, James Madison, Maryland, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Syracuse, Temple, and West Virginia. The Pac-12 becomes the Pac-13 after the additions of Boise State, San Diego State, and Fresno State. Colorado and Utah left for both the Midwest-10 and the Mountain West respectfully. Now for the smaller conferences, Idaho leaves the FBS for the FCS conference, The Big Sky. New Mexico State becomes and independent football team. The Sun Belt gets Sam Houston State and Wofford from the FCS. The C-USA adds Butler, Liberty, Texas State, and Villanova to their conference. The American Athletic Get Delaware and W&M from the CAA, but the ACC snatches UConn. Wichita State brings back football but it's not for the conference their currently playing in, instead, it becomes an associate member for the Mountain West. Gonzaga and Pacific also bring back football, but it's also for the Mountain West. And to top off this crazy realignment, the Ivy League Switches from FCS action to FBS action. I hope you liked this prediction. Leave a like and a reply down below this comment.

UT isn't going ANYWHERE....better chance is OU and OSU leave killing the big 12 and both have shown interest in the SEC but SEC doesn't want both of them just OU so it would take that to kill the big 12

I don't see OU and or OSU going anywhere, Why should they when the Big 12 is making a lot of money and OU showed last year that the conference winner can get into the playoff
@MCG55SS6 жыл бұрын
Big 12 though makes money it is still behind per school of the B1G and the SEC Also OU and OSU leaving the Big 12 would kill the conference and almost guarantee the playoff between the power 4 champ every year so they wouldn't run the risk of being left out if they won their conference
@MichaelKiriazis5 жыл бұрын
The most fun would be West Virginia and Pitt to the B1G, creating 4-way annual rivalries with Ohio State & Penn State. Then add Oklahoma (renew Nebraska rivalry) to the west and maybe Texas (or else Rutgers would have to go to even it out, which no one would care too much). Plus all new additions are good/great at basketball too.

Good video. I'm interested in seeing what's going to happen with the Missouri Valley Conference. I think more than Illinois State are going to bolt. The football schools won't want to be in a basketball conference forever.

Cole Hinson they suck and wouldn't be worth it.

jonnybaze Lol 13-0 you SEC fanboy, and Orlando is the 18th biggest market in the US. So shut up. We're better than any team you root for.
@jonnybaze6 жыл бұрын
Cole Hinson first sec is my least favorite conference. I'm a Notre Dame fan. 13-0 vs average - bad teams at best, not very hard. Almost every p5 school and ND would easily be 13-0 with the same schedule. Who cares about the market size if the team sucks and draws little fans.
@colehinson62776 жыл бұрын
jonnybaze Lol how many teams beat Auburn? Probably not your school.
@jonnybaze6 жыл бұрын
Cole Hinson ok so I guess you don't disagree with my statements. Lol a lot of teams beat auburn, 4. No Notre Dame didn't play auburn but we did beat lsu, who beat auburn. Notre Dame of course played the hardest schedule.

Bro...the Pac-12 would never take San Diego St. Not because they are no good, but they have lesser academic standards than USC, UCLA and Arizona.
@michaelmedina45716 жыл бұрын
The Leap Fitness and Health SDSU is already academically superior to Washington St. and Oregon St. and they arent too far behind Oregon, and both the Arizona schools. SDSU is also the 6th most applied to school in the nation and has an acceptance rate lower than most of the PAC 12 schools. I don't see why SDSU is not academically ready.
@JoeBurke3046 жыл бұрын
The Leap Fitness and Health lower academic standards? I laugh. SDSU is harder to get into than Arizona or ASU's "rolling application" haha.

SDSU arent good? The past 2 years have beaten Stanford, a top 5 PAC-12 team and have had 2 amazing RBs. Donnell Pumphries is statistically the best RB in CFB history.

It gets weird when you look at Indiana because Indiana is just a tad bit more east than Purdue. It could make some sense to move Indiana to the west.

Norte Dame has a contractual agreement that if they decide to join a conference they have to join the ACC.

Notre Dame is already somewhat in the Big Ten with their hockey program in the Big Ten already. They could easily fit along with West Virginia in the Big Ten.

There is no doubt that both NDSU and Illinois State would be great additions to the FBS level, but South Dakota State managed to beat both of them in conference play, so you might want to take a look at those guys.
@williamlee99215 жыл бұрын
If NDSU wants to move up to FBS, then i think there should be a new conference that will be centered around the Mountain and Great Plains region which would go from G5 to G6. It would include Idaho, New Mexico State, North Dakota State, and maybe a few other FCS & FBS teams as well. I think within 10 years SDSU will inevitably move up since their academics out of the California State Univeristy System is one of the best (Graduation Rate, Admissions Rate, GPA). Their PHD programs are still growing year after year. Overall, good video! Also What about UMass? They're still looking for a conference after their fallout with the MAC. AAC makes a lot of sense geographically. EDIT: If WVU can't join Big 10, they'll most likely join the ACC to which would have been the 16th full member. Viewership and revenue is lower than the Big 12, but the ACC had only two full members leave. Also, it's very likely that BYU will become the Notre Dame of the west so they'll be independent for a while.
@PerspectiveSports5 жыл бұрын
William Lee It was hard to find a place for UMass, although they’ll likely be on the move during the realignment. Also who would make up the conference with NDSU?
@williamlee99215 жыл бұрын
Idaho since they still want to be in FBS, New Mexico State could join in the new conference since MW closed the door on them (as well as Idaho), EWU (they've been consistently getting their records over 50% for several years), those are the only ones I know could possibly move up but it'll take years for that to ever happen. Basically the top teams from Big Sky to MVFC if only they can draw more financial support from somewhere as well as one or two FBS members looking to get out of their current conferences. I'm interested to see what'll happen next though. Also, Liberty is moving up to FBS and will play as an independent for this year, but they can't play in the bowl games until next year. Wonder what's gonna happen next for them because they're a very conservative school.

I don’t think it would be completely out of reason for Iowa State to join the Big 10 IF THE BIG 12 DISSOLVES. In terms of travel they are near all the other teams and can recruit well also. As a team on the rise I don’t think the Big 10 would dislike it and in terms of academics they could definitely fit. This also means that the Iowa, Iowa State rilvalry is a Big 10 exclusive and as I said with Iowa State being on the rise could get some national attention. The Big 10 would need another team to balance out the conferences, and that’s where I’m not so sure. West Virginia does not have good enough academics to get in. I think Notre Dame could make the move due to the success of the Big 10 conference in hockey, (which Notre Dame is a part of). I don’t think that the Big 10 wants 16 teams, so if these moves were to happen I think that the 2 teams that drop out would be Illinois, (dropping out of power 5...maybe), as well as Rutgers, (who would probably move to the ACC). The big ten would then look like this West: Wisconsin, Purdue, Iowa, Iowa State, Northwestern, Minnesota, Nebraska East: Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Indiana, Maryland, Penn State I haven’t thought about it too much, but my initial thoughts are giving me positive outcomes.
@buckeyefan38945 жыл бұрын
The Iowa State add seems possible, idk if Notre Dame will ever give up their independent status. Personally I have a hard time seeing them dropping teams though. I don’t think the big ten is as concerned with the current success of their programs athletics as long as they have top teams every year. Think about it, they brought Rutgers in just 4 years ago knowing they were bad, but they wanted to expand their market to New York and Rutgers has the academics and history in sports. Illinois is in a downturn but I can’t see the Big Ten kicking out one of its inaugural teams who co founded the conference back in 1895. In conclusion, I feel like the big ten is the most stable of all of the conference do to its wide variety of markets and leading success in academics and the traditional programs it has like Ohio state and Michigan for football and Purdue and Wisconsin for basketball.

Could you do a video on the explosive growth of college hockey. Tons of players getting into the NHL in the last decade plus. What would it take to see a major college hockey expansion be possible! They was s major NCAA Hockey shake in their conference Alignment a few years! Potential growth in conferences like the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (8 Teams), the creation of the Big 10 (7 Teams) are big examples of this. It would be great to see who could be next like Penn State and Arizona State who made their NCAA D1 Hockey Debut in the last few years.
