Thanks for the nice video, low-key and sincere. I’m learning Vietnamese now in preparation for my trip; it’s an interesting one isn’t it? It’s fun watching you get the tones as a tonal language speaker already. I knew some Chinese and thought that would help me with Vietnamese tones. I suppose it did as a concept…but pronounce Vietnamese with Chinese tones and watch people look back blankly. 😅 In the north there are 6 of them (5 in the South) and three also have a special “stop” in the throat. So much more “staccato” than Thai. I’ll look forward to more videos.

We just left Hanoi a few days ago before traveling to Cambodia. You captured the city exactly as we remember. One our favorite cafés was the Note cafe. Worth a visit.

Tip for foreigners traveling to Vietnam: Trust the taxi meter and don't deal with taxi drivers (cuz you probably end up frustrated or sus-ing them in the end); A more financial way to travel around is to use apps like Uber which in Vietnam, we use GRAB or GOJEK (you should download them prior arriving, as soon as you have the SIM card installed then register on the app), they will save you pretty amount of traveling fees.

cafe is a cultural thing for Vietnamese everywhere in VN and out of VN. Vietnamese are mostly friendly, but lately culture has changed a bit with more people visiting VN. I lose all stress instantly whenever I go back to VN. VN people are the best!

twas like 2019 before pandemic hits me and bf first time to travel out of the country is when we visit vietnam as well..The taxi driver ask for expensive fare when we hop in but the discussed fare was cheaper. He gets upset when the driver tries to get his hands on my bf's wallet.telling him he should give that amount.

I'm Vietnamese American. You can pronounce words beginning "Tr" or "Ch" like a "J" sound. Words beginning "G" or "R" are pronounced with a "Z" sound in the North and a "Y" sound in the South. There are only 5 tones in Vietnamese language, but the "?" And "~" sound very similar so don't worry about distinguishing between them. So, just high, low, heavy and wavy tone not including no tone. Hope that helps! Have fun!

Grab is very cheap, safe and reliable in Vietnam, but somehow they have difficulties operating at the airport that's why the fares increase significually ....so Grab is only good in the city, not the airport, for cheap transport take the bus to the airport

Sorry for troubles you got with taxi driver. I think it is about 100k more expensive than normal price. With two people, if you dont have many luggages you can catch the bus no 86 to go straight to the center. 35000 vnd for each ticket.

The money there can be confusing with all the 000000. They know that so often times they would use a big calculator that shows the amount while inside a store. The motorbikes are parked all over the sidewalk. People have to pay to park there too it's not free like street parking in a city like New York. One good thing you can walk through a sea of motorbikes and not get run over. Maybe you would have the courage to walk through motorbikes as they are coming down the street to cross to the other side of the street. It's still amazing for westerners to look at how people cross the street there surrounded by motorbikes. One time I saw a man crossing the street on W. 34 Street in Manhattan darting between taxis. He got run over. Next thing he was on the ground. An ambulance came to take him away. He was darting fast among the vehicles. In Vietnam the trick is to walk slowly to allow the motorbikes to go around you.
