Things you need to be a car salesman; a great people person; an unbelievable work ethic and hustle; the will to keep pushing and selling no matter how many cars you have sold. I will never be satisfied with a number, not 30, not 40, not 100 car sold per month I will never be satisfied, always pushing more out! Also need to be a very smooth charismatic person. Do this; he will make $10,000 and more per month

that's true if you're selling regular cars. If you're in the luxury car business, less work, but more time spent with the same client, more commissions, and a crap load of extra cash with accessories. Your clients become friends basically, unlike with regular cars. With luxury cars you do activities with your clients, like rides with hotels and dinners, etc. Way more fun.

I'm terrible at sales, as well as any form of social interaction in general. That said, I've realized that sales is a massive part of overall success in every aspect of life. I am an aspiring entrepreneur, and need money in order to pursue my plan, so my goal is much larger than simply working a job in sales. As much as I will hate it, I absolutely have to improve myself, especially regarding my ability to sell something. I'm stepping out of my comfort zone that I have otherwise stayed inside of for the last five years. Wish me luck.

I was in service. It's very fun if you work sales from the service in same dealership as you already have customer base and volume and have other advisors give you referrals. Also it helps because you can go to finance and insurance selling warranties and other products. I haven't had much luck as I was an advisor at other brands and dealers but the organization and productivity of a service advisor can be very good to use as a car salesman.

Hey guys, I didn’t realize I had so many replies. I’m actually working at a GMC/Buick/Chevrolet/Cadillac dealership now. I currently wholesale parts, and 100% commissioned based. I’m actually not a car salesman, but getting into the dealership world is a big leap and I 100% recommend it if you can. Not all dealerships are going to be the same, but finding that right one might be the kicker, but I promise once your in a good space, the dealership world is definitely a big step and the way to go financially. There are so many open doors, rather that be in sales or service. It has been one of my best life decisions yet. And again I highly, highly recommend it. I get to talk to salesman/woman all day and help there customers with accessories or car part needs, and getting to learn service part of things by working beside awesome service writers. Again I just turned 24yr old this year. And I’m super excited to see what’s next. If you are willing to put in the work and time to learn. I believe anyone can do it. I believe in everyone reading this right now and is one the border to making that next life leap. Just do it, don’t wait. You got this!!! Be used to being comfortable in the most uncomfortable. One year later and i can say I’m probably the happiest I have ever been. Im a father to a 4 year old daughter and “work in progress” Husband.

Most pre owned dealers need time to build this reputation and if not done correctly they can establish a negative reputation to the public

Hello! Been taking an interest in sales recently and took an interest in car sales. What sort of experience do you need to get a job in this Industry, Or is it more of a character thing?

well the 12 hour shifts do not happen often it is just basaed on the amount of appointments you have and how busy the store is. I mean if you have clients who want to come in for appointments you might as well stay and work. If you have no appointments then you can go home

I know that I would have to ask the sales manager at any particular dealership specifically but generally speaking, do you think some dealerships would be okay with me taking every other Saturday off or maybe just working a shorter Saturday and again only every other Saturday because those are the weekends with my kid? It's very important to me and even more so because I'm not able to see him during the week because of distance. But again it would only be every other Saturday and if I needed to go in there for 2 hours to close a deal I could do that.

Maybe but Saturdays are the busiest days once you realize it you might want to change your schedule

thanks for watching zach, for those of us who on commission we would appreciate a salary. however I feel a salary wage demotivates some sales staff. They dont try as hard because they have guaranteed income. and as far as the second comment what do you mean like the first customer of the day? and last customer of the day? I dont think it matters its basically a numbers game the more customers to you see the more you will close

I did Car sales for 1.5 year about 20 years ago, before going back to a more stable Salary and Life, but just something to try. I found new car sales horrible, Used sales much better, cause there's not 5 dealers with the same vehicle, Plus it was more lax. But I did it, and some say I was successful, but I would not want to rely on it with financial responsibilities. I prefer a normal life, normal hours ect, utilizing a trade skill for income, much more steady . Being in car sales, I think has gotten worse and worse imo, maybe 50 years ago, it was great, but the industry continuously takes away more and more perks and ease to make money. Lets say the company cuts the minimum commission 50% , this is something that can and does happen. So yeah this guy says you have to totally commit, its your entire life is pretty much the way it is. Anytime you want to know how good a job is , just look at the turn over rate, in car sales its very frequent.

You forgot to mention being in the hole. Meaning if you don't sell you end up owing money to the dealership. If you owe too much, every car you sell will go to the dealership and not to your bank account.

Gone are the days when you would see 3-4 sale people if not more standing around outside waiting for someone to show up. I am sure they would rock paper and scissors on who would want the next customer,, hard as hell when there are no cars on the lot. I can never sell cars, I dont like jacking with people and would just be way to honest.
