We collect our Cocker puppy in a few weeks. When we went to see the litter, we went with no preconceptions (well our little boy was insisting on having a male because bits are better than girls….). We ended up choosing the smallest girl just because we liked her; her colouring was nice. We saw the litter again last night because they’re local and they’ve changed an awful lot in a week.

Your description of more likely behavior of (young) female/male dogs was funny to me because my parents‘ current male Labrador is (trying to be) the sneakiest dog I’ve ever met and my first dog as a child (female English Springer Spaniel) was really straight forward 😄

As a first time owner, I’m looking at buying a lab as a family companion. I have heard people claim there are differences in temperament between the different coloured labs. Can anyone help to clarify this point, please?

Lovely video again! I find people’s preference for a boy or girl interesting. I’ve had boys and girls from different breeds as a kid and now have two lab mixes, boy (4 years) and girl (7 month). So far, the main differences I notice seem to be depending on the breed and background, not because of their sex. Also, I very much agree with letting puppy’s go at 10 weeks instead of 8! Where I live 8 weeks is the norm and some of the pups we encounter at that age don’t seem to adjust so easily. I’m curious how you introduce your dogs to water and swimming and at what age. Love to see a video about that!

My GSD, now 5 years old, was the runt of the litter. She was small and a bit antisocial among her very large and rambunctious brothers. The breeder and his family were amazed that I chose her. Although they say that the dog should be at least 8 weeks old, I took her home at 7 1/2 weeks and I wish it was sooner, in fact soon after weaning. This is mainly because she was, in her mind, the breeder's dog. He was a Black man, and for at least a year when she saw any Black man, even at a distance, she went crazy trying to meet up with him. For me, she had her nose up... as far as she was concerned, I could not compare. I was not hers and she was not mine. Even now, although she is affectionate, gentle, and well-behaved, I think she would prefer a male owner, especially if he was Black, and especially if he was her original love.

To me (and I might be completely wrong!), it sounds more like you took her away too early and she suffered from it. There’s weaning and weaning. It’s not just about not drinking milk but also being ready to part (the puppy and the mum) - which they are not at 8 weeks although they can endure it. Most countries allow you to take them at 8 weeks but in my opinion, a good breeder should keep them until they’re 10+ weeks old

@@meerespelikan I disagree. She was old enough to imprint on the breeder, and there was the problem. In my opinion, the pup should smell and become acquainted with the humans and animals of her/his permanent home immediately after weaning, and thereby socialize. This is particularly true if all her litter mates are much bigger and heavier. The 8-week or older rule is best reserved for people who work outside the home all day or have rough children.

@@lindaabraham8715 I don’t really understand how you come to that conclusion when vets around the world all collectively explain why you should never separate them before week 8. It’s even illegal in most western countries to give them away before then and it’s recommended (depending on the size of the breed) to adopt them from week 9-12 (smaller breeds grow up faster, larger breeds need a little more time). But we also seem to have different understandings of how imprinting works, what socializing is and when dogs wean (which according to most vets juuust starts at week 7 but isn’t done until week 10), so I don’t think we’ll agree anyways. Thanks for staying nice though :)

Love this video! What’s your opinion on people with a 9-5 leaving their dog at home in the day? Currently me and my girlfriend have an 11 year old spaniel who sleeps a solid 18hours a day. But if we purchased a lab or another spaniel pup would 1h-1.5h exercise and mental stimulation a day be sufficient? Happy to contribute £ for an answer as I’m sure your a busy man :)
